ABC News: Bush Authorizes New Covert Action Against Iran»

This evening, ABC’s World News Tonight reported that the “United States has opened a new front in its showdown with Iran.” According to the report, President Bush has directed the CIA to carry out covert operations both inside and outside Iran “aimed directly at weakening the Iranian regime.”

ABC’s investigative correspondent Brian Ross said the CIA’s “non-lethal” program had received “secret presidential approval.” Officials told ABC the CIA plan “takes the place of proposed U.S. military action against Iran, reportedly advocated by Vice President Cheney.” Watch it:

The Blotter has more coverage:

The sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the subject, say President Bush has signed a “nonlethal presidential finding” that puts into motion a CIA plan that reportedly includes a coordinated campaign of propaganda, disinformation and manipulation of Iran’s currency and international financial transactions.

[…]

“Vice President Cheney helped to lead the side favoring a military strike,” said former CIA official Riedel, “but I think they have come to the conclusion that a military strike has more downsides than upsides.”

The covert action plan comes as U.S. officials have confirmed Iran had dramatically increased its ability to produce nuclear weapons material, at a pace that experts said would give them the ability to build a nuclear bomb in two years.

Vali Nasr, an Iran expert at the Council on Foreign Relations, said “I think everybody in the region knows that there is a proxy war already afoot with the United States supporting anti-Iranian elements in the region as well as opposition groups within Iran. And this covert action is now being escalated by the new U.S. directive, and that can very quickly lead to Iranian retaliation and a cycle of escalation can follow.”

Digg It!

You see, Tobey Tall, I told you that UK Guardian article was a plant. Propaganda for the “secret” war that Bush was planning. Although what kind of nimrod announces to the world a new “covert” action against Iran. What kind of lunacy is that?

I should also point out that this violates the UN Charter.

Gotta get more troops into Iraq by the end of the year and get the CIA on the ball so that Bush and Cheney can attack Iraq sometime next summer.

The US is done folks. Forget about salvaging it, it’s a done deal. I’m in the process of selling my home so I can move to Europe, before it’s too late. I suggest that you guys do the same. This country is finished.

So much for ’secret’ approval. I wonder whose b***s will be chopped off for leaking that?

This administration just flexed its muscle again but not against the Iranians, but rather against the lame Democrats who cowtowed to Bush by possibly giving him the bill he wanted regarding war funding.

The Democrats blinked and missed that one!!! LMAO

So fed up with this F’k'd up government. What a fricking JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. heyzeus Says:

    That’s a new Rovism we haven’t heard before…
    “a non-lethal presidential finding”

  10. unbelievable Says:

I’d really like to question the veracity of this report, but it’s far to logically sound for me to even feign such a dissection.

The Bush Regime is delusional and needs to be impeached. Now.

This must be Brian Ross’s little “pay back scoop” in return for dumping the DC madams list in the trash can.

A journalist with an inside source, who wants to leak this information because they are against it. That’s how it works. You don’t just regurgitate what Tony Snow says in his debriefings.

Given a blank check, Bush is off to starting another war. Nice Show Dems, I’m sure you’ll fund that one too. Now how about some tax cuts so we can all afford $ 5 gas to commute to work so we can have 50% of our income taxes pay for wars we were against.

  22. LandSurveyor Says:

unbelievable your words, are, unbelieveable. I’m not a terrorist. And if you really think that our government is terrorists it’s traitorous for you to verbalize it. And if it’s TRUE that our government is doing terrorist activities it’s traitorous for you to verbalize it.
This is a messed up world. And you’re one of these idiots who wants to give Israel back to the Palestininas, correct? Well let me tell you something. 30% of AMERICAN muslims think suicide attacks on Americans are justified. 40% of American Muslims don’t even believe 911 was commited by Arabs, even though Osama and Zawahiri have publiclly bragged about it.
These are the people you want to give the world to and you should be ashamed.

  23. Republicans are the Fear and Smear Party Says:

This leak is obviously Clinton’s fault. Or maybe Pelosi’s.

  24. Chris Says:

Jez can’t our media leave anything alone. So what if we are? There is such a rush by the media in this country to find the next scope that it’s damaging our counter-terrosim efforts.

  25. LandSurveyor Says:

The leak is by a concerned Republican I’m sure. Nothing wrong with that. Real checks and balances are guaranteed by technocrats, after all.

  26. mr. mario Says:

So the US already supports Pakistani militant groups that have carried out attacks on Iranian soldiers…?

Does that mean that the US is sponsoring terrorism? Those Iranian soldiers didnt do anything and were inside Iran; and, there is no War between the US and Iran so that makes them innocent right?

  27. Bluedahlia Says:

Why do all the 28%ers have to show up here? God, they are stupid. Idiots starving for negative attention……that’s all they can hope for.

  28. JPark Says:

Is this satire, LandSurveyor? Or did you just get back from a John Birch Society function? That is one the craziest paragraphs I have ever read…not to mention it goes against everything American democracy stands for.

  29. TripMaster Monkey Says:

    Hey, LandSurveyor:

Dissent does not equal treason. The Founding Fathers knew firsthand what happens in a society that holds dissent equal to treason, and they were very specific in their definition of treason in Article III, Section 3 of the Constitution as a result.

Look it up…it you were a little better informed about the highest law of this country, you might not embarrass yourself quite so much here.

  34. oldtree Says:

it has worked so well to destabilize all the formerly communist countries into currently communist or dictatorial regimes, why not try it again? Even the CIA knows that destabilizing a government was a temporary solution that has backfired on them ever since.
brilliant knowing the idiot has a plan. a cunning plan.

  35. Lily Says:

And if it’s TRUE that our government is doing terrorist activities it’s traitorous for you to verbalize it.

No, it would be traitorous not to say something.

  36. Buck Fush Says:

Oh great, more massive stupidity from the White house and the traitorous war criminals that occupy it.

    Hating the Repukian Mafia daily

  37. Chris L Says:

    Land Surveyor,

Is it your contention that we are at war against Islam?

  38. JMiller Says:

No no, this is really Iranian propaganda fed to the media to incite liberals and pacifists against President Bush… because clearly they think that Bush isn’t capable of inciting liberals and pacifists against himself well enough on his own. Too bad that Iranians made one fatal mistake in this propaganda — they failed to realize that Bush lacks any understanding of subtlety, thus the notion that this might be a “covert” operation is preposterous!

Now if ABC said that we went and nuked Iran, eh, that’s more what we’d expect from Bush at this point.

  39. Lily Says:

they out do themselves with super stupider.

    Comment by Buck Fush — May 22, 2007 @ 7:30 pm

    Also know as stupiderer.

  40. david Says:

LandSurveyor, you are one sick puppy. I think most people are resigned to the Two State solution for Israel/Palestine. The trouble is that the Occupied Territories remain “occupied”. The Six Day War has never ended and that’s what all this fighting is about. It’s not about giving Israel back to the Palestinians –only I’m pleased you acknowledge it was Palestinian land in the first place. The Palestinians will have to give up the Right of Return, but that will have to happen with compensation.

The Bush White House does sponsor terrorism. Just as Reagan sponsored it as proved during the Iran/Contra affair. The American public may be ignorant of this terrorism, but the Muslims in the Middle East and Asia are not. They’re the ones being arrested, tortured, and murdered. If their relatives want revenge, is it so strange? Isn’t it what you wanted after 9/11? And so the vicious cycle goes on and on.

  41. DM Says:

Ok, fine. I give up. Go die in some stupid war.

Nice job by ABC in juxtaposing the images of a beheading and a bus bombing while narrating that the US is supporting terrorists against the government of Iran. We need more of that to get the point across. 28%ers, your gubmint is sponsoring terrorists.

    America is a rogue nation.

Iran had a parlimentary democracy until the USA went meddling. You are meddling still.

But, if America is a democracy, and if its populace knows that, in a small and ever-shrinking world, it will be held accountable for wars that its government initiates in its name…then maybe there is a chance that the generals and the people themselves will stop treating other countries in a way that America itself would never countenance being treated.

  60. LandSurveyor Says:

It’s past time for a 2 state solution. This is a lie that delusional people tell themselves. Israel and the west will always be superior powers and Muslim communities will always have the rebel who throws the first stone or crosses the picket line and brings the rockets reigning down again from Israel. Get real. What an absurd lie that there will be 2 states.

  61. Gerald Gibson Jr Says:

No, it would be traitorous not to say something.

    Comment by Lily

Well I hope the story is not true. Because if so then what I saw in that video was a bus blown up that was full of people…. which is exactly like that crap you see in Israel and the Palestinian areas. Are we going to participtate in this way of acting simply because it is ok over in the middle east to do that to peope?

  71. Quizmos Says:

Bush calls his brand of state sponsored terrorism “covert action”, but is certain to put your name and mine on it while his henchmen suffer from the “I don’t recall” syndrome. 87. Reagansbrain Says:

Hasn’t the CIA been trying to knock down hostile governments for years?… Aint that kind of their reson d’etre?… Their track record in Iran is dismal, though.

A quick reminder. Ahmadinejad did not maneuver his way through the meritocracy of Iranian politics simply to throw his country into a nuclear armegeddon. Despite what some Americans believe, Iranians do not choose their President by holding a “Who’s the biggest suicidal loon?” contest.

  88. RUCerious Says:

  92. HOPELESS Says:

We don’t stand a chance with these idiotic tactics. We actually launched the poorly conceived “war on terror” as new offsensive strategy in the battle with Russia for control of Iran and Iran’s sphere of influence. And anyone with brains could have figured that it would backfire. How a few loonies were able to hijack the decision making of U.S. foreign policy and steer it in this direction is beyond me. In terms of good geopolitic strategy, Iran is the most important country to have in your court, and it seems like the loonies have permanently pushed Iran into the Russian court.

  93. Ytterbius Says:

Hmm, some kind of “bad cop, worse cop” it seems. Cheney, of course, wants us to go in militarily. He’s worse. GW, realizing that “a military strike has more downsides than upsides,” takes a, ehem, measured approach by entering a sneaky war, with possible military consequences. He’s bad.

Hmm, on thinking about it, it might serve a purpose to make such a thing up, and leak it to the press. It would keep the Iranians on edge, and that’s not a bad thing. I don’t tend to believe that GW ever does something that serves any purpose that I can imagine, though. He’s failed me too many times.

  94. Ira Says:

GOOD! Now it can be done without bloodshed. The people of Iran HATE the mullahs regime which has brutally and savagely crushed their freedoms at every level, persecuted women, workers, ethnic minorities, students, and all democratic voices. Iran can be a great democracy, and example and pattern for the rest of the middle east to follow. No one deserves and is better suited for it than Iranian people who have shown their steadfastness, intelligence, and culture throughout history. The Theocracy of Tehran is just a tiny dot in history, and will soon be obliterated from the face of the earth. But Iran will flourish afterwards. Just wait and see it happen.

  95. AskMeAboutMyDickCheneySexTape Says:

GOOD! Now it can be done without bloodshed.

    Comment by Ira

But it won’t be bloodless. Yes there is strong feeling against the mullahs but by giving it direct support we basically legitimize the crack down the government is sure to launch against it as well as undermining anyone who expresses these feelings in the eyes of other Iranians. It enables the the regime to brand any supporter of democratic reform as a US agent and turn the general population against them. The result is not on the Iranian regime killing and torturing people, but also strife between various Iranian political factions possibly leading to civil war. Although Civil war is unlikely because the US actions will probably have the effect of uniting Iranians behind their governement. Thats what forigen agression does to a country. You see it in Iraq, you saw it in the US when we were attacked on 9/11 and you see it all throughout history.

Democracy has to grow from the grass roots, and it is in Iran, although as I understand it, to a lesser extent since the War on Terror was launched.

Iran can be a great democracy, and example and pattern for the rest of the middle east to follow.

Thats what Iraq was supposed to be.

  96. Hydroman Says:

I feel bad for all the americans in Iran now… Might not be a good time to be an american in Iran. Cant believe that ABC would put our own soldiers at risk. However, I can believe that we would send in CIA to help the overthrow of a foreign gov’nt all without the american public knowing. I know CIA probobly wont cancel this operation now, It’s just going to be harder now and cost more american lives… Thank you goes out to this “unknown source”. And good luck trying to stay alive now.
