White House Quietly Planning ‘Second Surge’ To Double Escalation In Iraq By Christmas»

bush1.jpgProviding further proof that President Bush’s escalation is hardly a short-term surge, Hearst Newspapers reports today that President Bush is quietly implementing a second Iraq troop surge that would “nearly double the number of combat troops in Iraq this year.”

According to the analysis of Pentagon redeployment numbers:

This “second surge” of troops in Iraq, which is being executed by extending tours for brigades already there and by deploying more units, could boost the number of combat troops to as many as 98,000 (from 52,500) by the end of this year. When support troops are included, the total number of U.S. troops in Iraq could increase from 162,000 now to more than 200,000 — the most ever — by the end of the year.

This escalation would bring the total number of brigades in Iraq to 28 by winter. In the current escalation, Bush ordered five brigades to accompany the 15 already stationed in Iraq.

While Bush proudly trumpeted the first escalation in January with a nationally televised address, he is reportedly keeping this one under wraps, not addressing it in any major public medium. “It doesn’t surprise me that they’re not talking about it. I think they would be very happy not to have any more attention paid to this,” said retired Army Maj. Gen. William Nash.

  1. Katie Says:

Exactly where is he going to get these troops. He’s having a hard time finding the troops for this escalation. What is he going to do, tell everyone in Iraq that they are never going home until he says so.

We may just be witness to our first outright rebellion by the military. There is no way the “Generals on the ground” are going to support this. They will see no sense in sending more cannon fodder into Iraq. At least I sure hope they won’t see it as making sense.

We have a mad man as our President and we need to do something about it NOW, not in 2008.

  3. Badmoodman Says:

When does BushCo start conscription and send about 5 million troops there? The way Iraqis are fleeing the country we could soon have one soldier per Iraqi. Hey, why not just annex them as the 51st state? Solves that pesky immigration issue too and gets us back to $2/gal gasoline.

and the war goes on and on and on, and on……and on.

    and on.

The reality is quite simple - no matter what they do, no matter how many people they kill, this foreign policy of aggression will not give the results that the politicians have promised us.

The only thing that can be guaranteed is quite simple - more people dead will mean more people will hate us - and thus, our safety will be reduced even more…

Reid, Pelosi, etc were all beggin the President to increase troop numbers in Iraq.

I even asked him to do this. I personally called him and asked him to do this.

I guess since he now agrees with us, we must be against this plan.

The money now secured by the Congress, after an empty threats, noise and series of non-binding resolutions, Bush will start massing another bigger escaltion by end of the year and then comes for more money in the billions of dollars to the same Congress.
Then, this Congress will make another noise…but nothing with teeth to bite…until Bush finally handles the keys of this war to a successor…assuming no other war with Iran is in the making.

  14. COMMENT BY JIM Says:

My oh my, what happened to the Democrat controlled congress ending the war? I thought Nancy Pelosi was going “do the people’s will” and cut funding to the war budget, or AT LEAST receive a “pull out of Iraq” date from the White House. My oh my…… What will happen next?

  15. Earthside Says:

Hey, apparently it is okay for Bush to lie his head off.

The Democrats in Congress are going to give him a ‘blank check‘ for this surge and the next surge … war without end. Amen

I gotta agree with you, profmarcus. Every time I see circumstances lining up against him and what he wants to to do and I figure “he’s got to see reality now”, he takes his delusion up another notch and pushes onward into his imaginary Mary Poppins landscape as if it were real.

I KNOW that this can’t be sustained, and that the further he pushes, the worse his ultimate collapse will be, but the problem is, he’s dragging the rest of us along for the ride.

Iran’s secret plan for summer offensive to force US out of Iraq

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/ frontpage/ story/ 0,,2085195,00.html

Iran is secretly forging ties with al-Qaida elements and Sunni Arab militias in Iraq in preparation for a summer showdown with coalition forces intended to tip a wavering US Congress into voting for full military withdrawal, US officials say.
“Iran is fighting a proxy war in Iraq and it’s a very dangerous course for them to be following. They are already committing daily acts of war against US and British forces,” a senior US official in Baghdad warned. “They [Iran] are behind a lot of high-profile attacks meant to undermine US will and British will, such as the rocket attacks on Basra palace and the Green Zone [in Baghdad]. The attacks are directed by the Revolutionary Guard who are connected right to the top [of the Iranian government].”

    ________

I’ll say it again, this is unacceptable! Putting a minimum wage increase in the bill will do nothing to placate me, or many other Democrats that worked so hard to help you win in Nov.

“said Rep. Joe Baca, ‘But we realize too we have a responsibility to fund our troops and make sure they have the right equipment.’” You honored your responsibility by funding the troops in the bill bush vetoed. It is not for the Dems to take on the burden of someone else’s disregard for doing what is right.

The most honorable move right now is to send back the same bill bush vetoed, over and over again until he realizes (along with the intellectually dead American public) that it will be BUSH withholding the funds from our troops.

It is becoming all too clear that you are kicking the ball down the field to use the Iraq war for political gain. THIS WILL NOT WORK! You will lose the support of the people who put you there! Stop playing games and honor your commitment, get us OUT OF IRAQ!

This happened with the last bill.

Some staffers put out the story that the Democrats had folded, much wailing and rending of garments among anti-war Democrats in and out of Congress ensued, the leadership renounced the theoretical bill, and ended up passing one that Bush found so offensive that he vetoed it.

  62. Woobot Says:

The strategy is to build up the number of troops until the end of this year. After the first of the year and until the election, we are going to endlessly hear how much better things are in Iraq and that they are beginning to bring the troops home. With fewer troops and less exposure, the deaths will decrease. By the election, we will be back down to the number of trrops in Iraq that existed before the “surge.” But they can claim that they are “withdrawing.”

  63. Buck Fush Says:

I get alot of my news from them too, but it is the SENIOR US OFFICAL with no name attached that makes it suspect, who said it and is it credible.
And I do understand your concern on this, as does everyone that is paying attention to it.

  64. joe Says:

Billshit, Tobey. It’s 2007, and you still believe everything you read.

Iran is not working with al Qaeda. Iran and al Qaeda are mortal enemies. Al Qaeda stages terrorist attacks against Iranian, and Shiite, interests. The blew up Shiite mosques in Pakistan and Iraq. Taliban and al Qaeda fighters slaughtered the Iranian embassy staff when they took Kabul in the 1990s. Al Qaeda considers Shiites to be heretics. The only al Qaeda-linked group in Iraq prior to this war, Ansar al-Islam, operated out of Kurdish territory, and launched attacks on Iran.

Do you remember the discredited theories about Saddam and al Qaeda working together, that made the rounds back in 2002? This is even dumber.

You can’t just conclude that, because they’re Muslims and bad guys, they must be bestest buddies. It doesn’t work like that. The fact that you people make a point of not learning lessons about the actual threat we face is why the public has turned to the Democrats to lead the fight against al Qaeda.

  65. joe Says:

Oops, sorry, Tobey, I seem to have misread your meaning.

That’s not a credible story. They’re just trying to link al Qaeda to their latest enemy du jour, like they did with Saddam.

There doesnt need to be a draft to add more troops and there wont be. We are adding “troops” on a daily basis. The only hitch is they are privatized “contractors” in the form of blackwater et all.

When is the world going to take notice that a new private commercial miltary force is taking shape.

A force that is not held back to the constraints of the geneva convention, or other checks and balances accords and agreements.

A force that currently numbers nearly the same size as the US military force numbers.

A Military force bought and paid for by the US taxpayers and other coalition funds but with no Allegiance, accountability or indebtedness to the Peoples goals or service.

Better equipped less restrained and completely privatized.

A force capable in the wrong hands of even Militarily enforcing regime change in our own United States let alone other countries and regimes.

Couple that with a prison system operating outside the Rule of Law run by the same Commercial interests.

The seizure of resources , both natural and monetary. and the establishment of entrenchments, fortresses and strategically located geographical seizures and you now have a non-geographically centered sovereign state operating at a scale much larger than most of the worlds superpowers.

When is the world going to wake up to the fact that we are at the endgame of a 35 year old coup and the target isn’t the middle east its a land war in china.

Missing is what I’d like to see - besides going back in time and having GWB NOT invade.

A massive escalation, 3-500,000 troops, and free press (actually interested in research)

We owe the Iraqis, and the region, stability to the best of our abilities. GWB isn’t capable of doing the right thing, if the Democrats want my support they need to do the right thing which is to undo to the best of our ability the damage GWB has done. Not leave them in the vacuum we created and watch from Kurdistan. Give them stability and dignity and help building an economy.

And you yet drivel spills forth with no credibility or merit. You can understand why any subsequent assertion or opinion is deemed comedy right?

  87. Your Conscience Says:

#81 We owe the Iraqis, and the region, stability to the best of our abilities. GWB isn’t capable of doing the right thing, if the Democrats want my support they need to do the right thing which is to undo to the best of our ability the damage GWB has done.

Ignorance is bliss sitting from your cushy lazyboy isn’t it? So ignorant so devoid of objective facts.

Here are some cold stark truths

    1. They do not want us there
    2. They do not want your assistance
    3. They despise you and loathe your occupation
    4. Nothing can be done to ‘fix it’

  88. jd Says:

Of course it’s an illegal and unethical meatgrinder.
Of course they do not want us there and loathe our occupation.
    Who said I’m not going?

Got any more strawmen to knock down gents?

Iraq is a disaster, a criminal war. What the US has done is criminal. The Iraqis are justified in hating us and wanting us to leave. They have no reason to believe the US can do anything to help them and that our continued presence there will only make things worse. More killed, more tortured, stolen, burned, humiliated and degraded. There is no law beside the law of the dollar and the gun in Iraq, we have infected their country with chaos, death and dishonor.

So we should just leave now? Seriously? And say what, “sorry, that was the Republicans, GWB and his cronies, not us, good luck with the crap we left”

  89. jd Says:

Or should we tell them, “Well, we never really declared war, we think it’s illegal anyway, so we can’t really justify being here” or how about “GWB tried for years and he couldn’t get it right, what makes you think we can?”

We could blame them, “Polls show you don’t want us here, so we’re leaving”
or we could blame us “Polls show we don’t want to be there so we’re leaving”

  90. bogtrotters Says:

I’ve never, EVER prayed for someone to die and I abhor violence. But please, Lord, just two well-placed lightning bolts would do the trick…

Impeachment is still the best solution–we can’t let these clowns set a precedent for future administrations…

  91. frybread Says:

If we weren’t living in such a civilized (or is it apathetic?) time Bush would be facing an organized rebellion for this shit.

  92. N A Gribble Says:

I think that the only responsible thing for Bush and Cheney to do is to each lead one of these future combat brigades into battle in Iraq. Afterall, they are responsible for the deaths of more than three and a half thousand brave Americans to date, a category I would not place either of them in!

  93. Kid Clu Says:

If at first you don’t succeed….Surge, Surge Again.

Dems, please tell me WHY you seem to be unwilling to stop this madman. Even looking at this picture is a big fat clue that there is something wrong with him. What normal, sane adult male would dress up like an astronut(sic) to get his picture made ?

Enough is enough Dems. We gave you power, now use it !!!

  94. chimpy 3000 Says:

He could only be colluding with some foreign country to take us over. This would leave the “homeland” defenses compromised and the armed forces stretched way too thin.

  95. nulllynne Says:

WHY DOES OUR PRESIDENT ALWAYS WEAR CLOTHING WITH THE PRESIDENTIAL EMBLEM ON THEM ? iS IS SO HE CAN REMEMBER WHO HE IS ?
