Pelosi: ‘I’m Not Likely To Vote For Something That Doesn’t Have A Timetable’

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) confirmed at a press conference late this afternoon that she does not intend to vote for the Iraq deal reached today by the White House and Congress. “I’m not likely to vote for something that doesn’t have a timetable or a goal,” she said, while still praising the deal as “a recognition by the administration that a new direction was called for by the American people.”

Later, House Appropriations Chairman David Obey (D-WI) insisted that “we intend to continue that fight” for an Iraq timeline “on every vehicle available to us,” adding that the “first two vehicles that we expect to join the issue on are the defense appropriations bill in July and the defense supplemental appropriations bill in September.”

Watch it:

Also during the press conference, Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL) called the deal “the beginning of the end of the president’s policy in Iraq,” citing the 18 benchmarks and two required ‘progress reports’ laid out in the legislation. Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC), the House Majority Whip, pointed out that the bill will allow for passage of the first minimum wage increase in a decade, and for more than $6 billion to be delivered to victims of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma.

Crooks and Liars has more.

Digg It!

This is not a surprise people. We all know Democrats love this war because it gives them something to attack the President over. They could careless about our dying troops. They hate the troops.

  8. Mike Silva says:

No, Rahm. Sending the same bill back would end the blank check. This is pure DLC caving.

Let Bush veto, and leave our troops there with no funding if he thinks that’s best. He’ll pay the price.

Make a stand on this bill, not end endless stream of subsequent bills.

The time to end this war is now. Not when the Democrats, or the republicans or the Iraqis – or any politicians tell us it should be over

Aggressive war is murder. The founders recognized this, and so do many American people.

We need to end this war now, and some politicians need to stand up and have the courage to take that position.

So, to try and make this noxious bill even the least bit palatable, the claim is that money that was already allocated for Katrina relief is now allocated for Katrina relief

Bravo, well played, fiendishly clever how you Dems wheedled money out of W that he already should have earmarked for the Katrina victims

And all you had to do in return was roll over and give a politically weak and overwhelmingly unpopular President as big a blank check as the GOP did in all it’s W-enabling years

Yep, giving W what he wants, that’ll sure change his Iraq debacle for the better, no doubt about it

  27. frybread says:

Here’s the catch: What is to stop Bush from returning to Congress in September, saying the war is showing “progress,” and bullying the Congress for more money? You know the Dems will roll over and give him the money.

I think we can all expect Bush to bully the weak Dems and get his way until ‘08, when another President in elected.

I am writing snail mail, I am sending email, and I will spend tomorrow morning calling Democrat who dares to answer the phone. If they will not respond appropriately, vigorously, opppositionally, then I am eager to seek, recruit, and support anti-war candidates. Let these spineless know-nots continue to ignore the will of the people, go to their receptions, and eat canapes and drink wine. They will find themselves employed come January 2009, just like their buddy Dumbya. I am livid, seething with anger, and justifiably perturbed. Who do they think put them where they are? Who do they think pays their salaries? Who do they think makes us the populace of this country? If they don’t know, they’ll soon find out!

  36. david says:

Well, the question will be What does the World look like in Sept? If Krugman is right, it will look like Hell and the Republicans are the ones who are still giving this rogue President the power to ignore Congress.

What would happen if Congress didn’t fund the Troops? Really?? George Washington pursued the Revolution without funds from the Continental Congress. Chits & IOUs were issued. The Troops went without and suffered for it. And it nearly brought disaster on the young republic.

Oh, yes, eventually George would have to wind the war down. But how many would needlessly die. And would the public blame the right person? It’s funny how domestic disputes go all wrong. You think it’s obvious who has the sympathy and then the tide shifts.

The problem is what everyone knew was the real reason why Pappy Bush didn’t overthrow Saddam. A democratic Iraq would be Iran’s ally. And the two would be the great power in the Middle East. This is why Bush is threatening Iran, although it’s obvious America hasn’t the power to attack Iran. Bush is hoping something will go right.

But it won’t. Everything will go wrong. Invading Iraq was like getting married while drunk. So easy to do, so messy to undo. The Iraq Study Group was like meeting the lawyers and being told the law and what has to happen. And Bush can’t face that reality. He can drag Iraq to a marriage counsellor and try to “make nice”, but it ain’t gonna work. And the more mulish he sounds and threatening, the better Iran will look to the Shi’ite Iraqis who just want the Americans to go home.

So, Bush has to go back Sept for more money. The Iraqis have a petition calling for a timeline for withdrawal before their parliament. The UN mandate, giving Bush the right to occupy Iraq, expires at the end of Dec. Bush is playing high stakes poker. The rest of us would all like to call it a night, but he’s dealing and he’s put too much of our money in the pot. What to do?

Well then, there you go. The lives of hundreds of our military are to be sacrificed for a raise in the minimum wage and hurricane aid.

I am so angry and disappointed in the Democrats. They have proved themselves to be spineless wimps. They, along with the enabling Republics will be responsible for the loss of many more of our young men and women. If any of them have a conscience (which I doubt), they will have a hard time sleeping at night.

It’s time for a third party. The Progressive Party. And we should recruit Russ Feingold as the stand bearer.

  42. criticalthinker says:

    Why are people surprised?

Pelosi showed she is incompetent by not having started impeachment proceedings already.

Bush already admitted on national TV that he broke the FISA law and a Federal judge has heard the case agreed that he broke the FISA law, so what more does she need?

Since no court has declared the FISA law unconstitutional, Bush MUST be indicted and argue his case in court.

If the law is NOT declared unconstitutional, he should go to jail just like as if you or I violated that law.

Why should NOT Pelosi be impeached?

Do you also believe that the police captian who ignores a police officer’s unlawful act should not be thrown out?

Please remember that Bush admitted to breaking the FISA law on national TV and a Federal judge ruled that Bush broke that law!

Therefore is it NOT her job to start impeachment hearings, so that the president can be indicted, and be given the oppourtunity to test his opinion that the FISA law is unconstitutional in court?

If she does not want to do her constitutional duty, why should the rest of the Congress not impeach her first, in order to get a Speaker who will do their duty?

It may be true that Pelosi may need to go. We’ll know soon enough if she actually has a plan. Then I have no problem with pitching her ass out of office. However, if we act too quickly on this, we may be cutting off our nose to spite our face. I would give it time — not too much more time — but a little more.

  65. Fools on the Hill says:

Pelosi needed to step down as soon as she took impeachment off the table. She has taken an oath to defend the Constitution and that includes impeachment when it is called for. She surrendered before she was even sworn into office.

She may respect Bush as a person but, I find him not worthy of any respect and he deserves to be sent to the Hague for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

One has to understand who you are battling. You do not give the likes of Bush and Cheney an eighth of an inch because they were already stealing a mile. So while Pelosi and Reid are playing with non-binding nonsense, Bush is sending the CIA into Iran for more regime change and planning to double the surge.

  66. DutchHenry says:

Get it folks;it’s all one big club that you and I pay for them to do their job of screwing us.none of their sons & daughters are dying in Iraq it’s the ordinary folks like you and I.
The Dem leadership just like the Repuke are just as corrupt.Look at what the DLC has done to the party of middle class folks,Was Clinton’s Nafta and Gatt trade agreement not intended to stem the flow of illegals.Well,It shipped our jobs out and now the illegals are here taking our jobs.
The far away the Dem Party gets from the Clintons the better for ordinary folks.

  67. Exley says:

“why should the rest of the Congress not impeach her first, in order to get a Speaker who will do their duty?”

Members of Congress cannot be impeached. Under the terms of the Constitution, they are not “civil officers of the United States.”

The punishment for wrongdoing by members of Congress is expulsion, censure, reprimand, or some lesser punishment pursuant to Article I, Section 5 of the Constitution, which provides that “Each House shall be the Judge of the Elections, Returns, and Qualifications of its own members . . . . Each House . . . . may punish its members for disorderly Behavior, and with the Concurrence of two thirds, expel a member.”

  68. JPark says:

Beefeater is a sexist pig? Whoda thunk.

  69. JPark says:

Um, on what grounds would you impeach Pelosi? A recall election I can see but impeachment? Are you high?

  70. JPark says:

Fools on the Hill, Pelosi took impeachment off the table before she was reelected. There was no huge push to send her to the political netherworld.

  71. Moderation says:

Impeachment must be put on the table publicly my Speaker Pelosi, loudly, and for a very specific reason:

President Bush, and the White House in general, refuse to negotiate in good faith. Treat this like a business deal. When you receive an offer, you counter with an offer that compromises in good faith. If, in turn, the opponent responds with a counteroffer that not only offers zero compromise, but in fact tells you your counteroffer needs follow exactly what they told you in the first place, you either rescind all offers and leave them high and dry, or you make the next counteroffer worse for them.

In this context, that means every single bill passed needs to be tougher, and have less compromise, until the administration is willing to negotiate.

In business, negotiators using tactics that this Congress is using would have been fired almost immediately.

  72. JPark says:

I wondered about that Exley. Again, maybe a recall election but I doubt that would work. She is pretty popular in her district.

  73. trueblue says:

    JPark,

That was the aim of my post #57.

Could’ve been clouded by a bit of anger, though.

    ;)

  74. Buck Fush says:

These politicans are a krafty lot, none of us knows what the inside goings on are like, we can guess and speculate, but none of us know. She can be making many side deals to sink the GOP or now and well into the future….I will for the moment give her a break and know that something else is going on on the inside.

Hating the corrupt Repukian Mafia daily, and hoping that the Dems break the back of Repukians for the next 30 years

Try some wine, true. It’s a frickin’ miracle worker.

  76. JPark says:

I know one thing Buck Fush, this is definitely keeping the Iraq occupation on the front pages.

  77. trueblue says:

    Nah.

    It’s 11:40pm here.

    I need sleep.

  78. ?W says:

Call me naive, call me hopefull; but, it just occured to me that maybe this could be a ruse?
Can it be possible that a bill that gives Bush a blank check, a bill that doesn’t change policy or hold Bush accountable- is it possible that a bill like that wouldn’t pass, in one or both, the House and Senate?
So, by design, it would submarine what Bush wants and move the debate closer to changing policy?
    Am I reaching?

  79. trueblue says:

    Plus,

Don’t like the taste of wine. Never have.

    :((

    A margarita, though………….

  80. JPark says:

Trueblue, it is so true. I would like to get rid of people like that scumbag Patrick McHenry but the people in his district like mouthbreathers. I am kind of embarassed that every time a story comes out liberals start eating their own.

  81. JPark says:

    Pass the sugar true.

  82. Zooey says:

    A margarita, though………….
    Comment by trueblue

I would probably kill for a margarita right about now. :)

  83. JPark says:

Speaking of liberals eating their own, earlier I saw somebody throwing Feingold under the bus. It is silly.

but dude… in the business world mcdonald’s in 2′nd rate service

in respect to service to the people

mcdonald’s by far provides far superior service to it’s customer than
congress provides to serve the people

congress ain’t serving we the people at all

not only would congress be fired in the real business world

THE real business world DOES NOT HAVE DRACULA

the real business world don’t have a blank check to put us into debt

the real business world ain’t holding the highest laws of the land,
the votes contigent on being held open for friggin 5 hours in the
wee wee hours of the morning

the real business world don’t pick up trusty telephone to solicit bribes
nor hideaways or $100,000 per plate bribes

it ain’t i scratch you and you scratch me with the highest laws of the

as i stated, every single one of this high class criminal class of the highest
house in the land, senate, congress, and every single crony

should be thrown in the friggin slammer.

now referring to hoodlums, of course i’m being humorous, but literally
that’s about the quality of service we are getting

IT’S SO DOG GONE CORRUPTED IN THIS CESSPOOL OF POLITICAL

  86. JPark says:

I’ve got it. Let’s get rid of all the progressives and jump on the old neaderthal Ron Paul’s bandwagon. Get a grip, folks.

  87. trueblue says:

    …with a really good tequila…………

    oooohhh!

Thanks for your comments, JPark. You rock.

    Good night.

Sandman is beating me over the head…..

  88. Exley says:

    #71 JPark,

Federal elected officials cannot be recalled. There were some proposals calling for recall elections during the ratification of the Constitution, but they were never adopted. Eighteen states permit the recall of state officials, but there is no provision for recall of federal officials.

  89. JPark says:

Somebody was trashing Feingold saying he has to go unless he somehow (they didn’t mention how one Senator could do it) he filibustered this bill. I didn’t know one vote was good enough for a filibuster.

  90. Eargy Earp says:

A different tack must be taken now. Since the Democrats (predictedly) do not have the fortitude to do waht is right and risk being seen as causing a shortage for our troops (whether true or folklore).

The new direction should be to start introducing bills that propose to PAY FOR this endless war. If they vote to extend the war, then they need to figure out how to pay for it. This could be embarassing for the Repubs since they have no practical thought of doing this. Raise taxes to pay for this obscene war and the people will see the folly. (Of course most already have seen through this farce.)

Add this cost say to gas tax and the fictitiously high gas prices that exist and the % against the surge will soar.

By the way, the gas price increase are just to increase profitability. If there were a true shortage, there would be some stations running out of gas. It is not happening. THe plants that are down for maintenance this summer are down PURPOSELY. THere was no emergency maintenance that the refineries needed to be down. The Oil companies have learned the Enron tricks on crating an artificial shortage, inflating prices and selling for ridiculous prices. THe prices will mysteriously fall and plants come back on line magically, just in time to stem windfall profit or regulatory legistation. YOU CAN BANK ON IT!!!

  91. Zooey says:

    ‘night, true.

  92. JPark says:

Wow, no kidding, Exley? Is there any way for a district to get rid of a representative?

  93. zxz says:

do you know there is a GOOD chance, BOTH
congress and prez are simply serving the bankers
so they can continue giving the central bankers loans
    and both parties are happy.
and we the people get shafterd for owning and owing that
    debt for eternity
    CORRUPT I SAY

    FRIGGIN
    CORRUPT
    Comment by Jimbo DUDE — May 22, 2007 @ 10:17 pm

Now you’re getting it. They are all POLITICIANS and most of them are there for themselves, not for the will of the people.

  94. Moderation says:

Speaker Pelosi does need to put impeachment back on the table very soon, very loudly, and very publicly. She needs to make it quite clear that it was taken off the table as a symbol of good faith in the negotiation process. Since the White House has shown only bad faith in all respects since the 110th began it’s session, from Iraq, to the US Attorney scandal, to plans towards Iran, such a symbol of good faith must now be destroyed utterly, and never taken off the table again during this administration’s end-run.

The Democrats in Congress should then proceed to treat their job like a business negotiator or legal negotiator would. Congress is the one negotiating from a position of strength (they have the support of the majority of the American people). Therefore, their opposition (in this case, the White House) needs to be the first to concede some of their issues in the negotiation. The Democrats should have started out as though they WERE the ones in a position of strength. They should have begun the negotiations with the introduction of a very strict bill, one with clearly defined timelines, no pork unrelated to the Iraq debacle, an incredibly tight and finite budget with no supplementals allowed, and the immediate outlawing of and removal of all mercenaries in Iraq. Let the White House offer the first olive branch, or face such a bill going to vote over and over and over, again, reducing the money and decreasing the deployment times each and every time the WH scoffs and implies they will not negotiate.

By not doing so, the White House was shown a Congress with a weak stance. Now, the WH thinks they are the ones with the stronger stance. The voting public is feeling betrayed. The only way for Pelosi to reverse this perception is to continue to hammer through tougher and tougher bills, not softer bills.

Negotiate from a position of strength, Madame Speaker. STRENGTH!!!

  95. Zooey says:

    #88 — JPark

    Oy….

The last thing we need is a feeding frenzy of our own.

  96. Exley says:

#91 Not to my knowledge, JPark, other than voting them out in the next election, pressuring him or her to resign, or trying to get the entire House to vote to expel the member.

  97. JPark says:

“Now you’re getting it. They are all POLITICIANS and most of them are there for themselves, not for the will of the people.”

Coming from a guy who eats Republican talking points for breakfast this means absolutely nothing.

  98. Jake says:

    Exley:

The President is a “federal elected official” — what are you talking about? Pelosi would no doubt argue that she is not a “civil officer” but keep in mind that one Senator, William Blount, was indeed impeached back in 1798.

That being said, more power to those who think Nancy is no better than the criminals in the White House ; )

  99. m12 says:

    ROFL!!!!!

They’re still back to the minimum wage? I guess the Dimocrats forgot about it the last 4 months.

    Cut, run, and surrender!

  100. JPark says:

Jake, you can’t recall a president. He is right.

  101. JPark says:

Here is m12/13, right on time to spout his elitist attitudes.

  102. Damian says:

A silver lining to assuage your outrage – the “progress” reports. Those should be some real doozies full of bullsh!t rich, thick and bold. PatreusOnTheGround will start it out, followed by the Chimp, reaching a crescendo of crap by DirtySnow.

That’s gonna be some Oscar-winning bullsh!t. Set your recorders now.

  103. JPark says:

See liberals? This is exactly what the right wing wants. They want you to abandon your elected officials. Just look at m12 (paid troll).

  104. Jake says:

Sorry, Exley, I thought you were talking about impeaching Pelosi. I think it would be a good idea.

  105. m12 says:

    What elitist attitude?

  106. Jimbo DUDE says:

    #92

i was just about to emphasise that point again, but thanks :)

that’s only a theory though, but after kennedy, that national
debt sure soared with that hoodlum reagan, (again just kidding
regarding that, maybe i refer to hoodlum = corruption)

anyhow… we have seen the debt of something like 10 billion
or 100 billion whatever it was EXPLODE to 8 friggin trillion no,
9 trillion…. i certainly refer to that as high class hoodlum activity.

that got a pure blank check and no way our these trusty fast,
smooth talking parasites serving the people at all, i’ll bet we
don’t get one friggin penny of service for each friggin dollar we pay
for all the wonderful services we all friggin desperately need.
YOU FRIGGIN CAN”T GET THE SERVICE.
Look at what bush did…… raided the lockbox stating it’s a bunch
of empty iou’s, then runs his motorcade to sell out ss# right to the
bankers….. as i clearly state far superior service at mcdonald’s and
obviously we are dealing with CORRUPTION that has gone on for
100 years, but lately dracula became a bunch of wee wee hour
arm twisting YACHTS, or has it always been that way

impeach that criminal, off the table, pelosi not getting involved it’s
friggin disgusting, a complete disgrace and a continuation of do nothing

EVEN WORSE….. you do me a favor and guess what :)
    i’ll be friggin do’in you a favor :) ….
that’s right, dracula comes in and the deal is cut… everyone’s
    happy -

    prez
    congress/senate
    central bankers
and the nice big fat government contracts

and what do we friggin get ?

    SC**R*W*E** !!!!!!!

  107. Exley says:

    Jake,

Blount was indeed impeached, but he argued at his Senate trial that members of Congress are not “civil officers of the United States,” and that the Senate had no jurisdiction to try his impeachment. The Senate, by a 14-11 vote, accepted that interpretation.

Blount was acquitted, and no Representative or Senator has ever been impeached since then. The only persons impeached in the 204 years since that case have been two presidents, one cabinet member, and 13 federal judges.

And with that, I bid you all a good night. Time for bed.

  108. m12 says:

See liberals? This is exactly what the right wing wants. They want you to abandon your elected officials. Just look at m12 (paid troll).

You’ve already abandoned our Commander in Chief and the soldiers he commands.

Go ahead and abandon Miss Lame Duck Speaker as well.

  109. Jake says:

    “SC**R*W*E**”?

  110. Jake says:

    Good night, Exley.

  111. Ruby says:

Democrats need to get a spine and stop these lunatics. Dems act like it’s no big deal, while our country is being destroyed! What is wrong with them!!!

  112. JPark says:

m12, your elitist attitude comes through in your hatred for the working poor.

By the way, I supported Bush attacking Afghanistan. And then he pulled out. He abandoned the American people by attacking a country he didn’t need to attack. In the immortal words of Pat Tillman…”it is f^cking illegal”. Sorry, moron12, I am loyal to those that deserve it.

  113. Fools on the Hill says:

Anyone notice the Dems went into hiding the past couple of weeks on the various talk shows? And then we get this ugly immigration bill that is supposed to distract us from this blank check deal.

I was pleased to see Murtha and Murphy were not giggling with Pelosi and those cave ins at this press conference. Murtha was likely at Walter Reed crying and saying he will continue the fight.

  114. Jake says:

SPARROWLESS (new Pirates movie opens everywhere Friday)?

  115. Jimbo DUDE says:

#108 somebody has to pay off what amounts to what i understand
is really not 9 trillion dollars national debt but really something like
    50 – 60 trillions

who do you think is going to pay that?

again only theory, but one thing for sure is there is no such thing
as inflation nor interest, i mean there is, but lets just say

it’s all bought out and totally corrupted dude

far superior service at mcdonalds and mcdonalds doesn’t
expect or demand you leave a extra $100 or 1000 when you
    leave

but our nice, rock solid integrity trusty servants don’t give it
    a 2′nd that to the tune of something like $50 – 100,000

we don’t even know dude….. all those books are totally cooked
so all that will be left of this country will be a bunch of ashes that
will blow away….. how’s that for service to the people dude :)

  116. Jake says:

    Ruby:

    IMPEACH PELOSI!!!!

  117. m12 says:

    #111

How exactly do I hate the working poor?

  118. m12 says:

somebody has to pay off what amounts to what i understand
is really not 9 trillion dollars national debt but really something like
    50 – 60 trillions

That $50-60 trillion is future Medicare/Social Security Liabilities, created by your heroes FDR and Lyndon Johnson.

  119. Jimbo DUDE says:

now i may be exagerrating this, but what accountability is there?
I remember reagan babbling on about the sealed lock box and
what does he do? Nixon was a outright criminal, Bush consistently
challenging the constitution, the dept of justice is so dog gone rigged,
wolfowitz, look at the disaster of the 109th.

Absolutely…. what kind of accountability are we getting, most
accountable congress ever, and pelosi doesn’t get involved
and favors for the prez and prez will do some scractching back too.

as i stated……… FAR FAR superior service at mcdonald’s, literally
a third rate restraunt identity and it’s like a palace of accountibility
dude compared to the grease pits if you know what i mean :)

and yes, i guess what’s left of this country will blow away in the
wind :) …. or at the rate it’s going somebody may be found after
the glaciers decimate all land under water :)

as i stated…. far better service at mcdonalds and WE get the grease pits

  121. JTitor says:

With regards to Beefeater’s question? Should NOT? …Shouldn’t Pelosi be impeached? Pelosi will be judge at election time. It’s the peoples job to get involved and change what we don’t like about the system now. If we don’t like it, then change it. I spend at least an hour night writing emails to those people that would change thier vote if enough pressure was put on them. I’m hoping I’m making a difference. If TP were true to the progressive movement they would send this blog to Leon Pinetta. It would reach the right people.

    Oy, not so much.

I’m heading off to bed. You can take the next shift. :)

  124. Moderation says:

#118, J-DUDE, That will never happen without certain criteria (the accountability thing):

    1) Separation of Money and State. This is the single most important reform this country could hope to see in it’s modern history. Like the Separation of Church and State, this protects all but those who wish to game the system, and pervert it. Political capital should be measured in the number of voters you or your lobby represents, period. No money, no favors, no special dinners or trips or parties. Such a separation includes within it campaign finance reform, the Fairness Doctrine and other important works this country desperately needs to function as the Founding Fathers intended. The penalties for accepting such bribes (and they shall be called BRIBES, for crying out loud, for that is what they are!) would be severe, with removal from office as the most common punishment in the case of elected officials, and firing the most common punishment for non-elected officials. Foreign interests can go through the diplomatic routes, since they don’t have any political capital in such a model.

    2) A reversal of the current power of observation. That is to say, rather than our government being allowed to spy on us, We the People should be allowed to “spy” on our government. If you are anywhere in a public building that doesn’t requite security clearance, you are on camera, and on audio, and the entire public can see and hear everything you do. If your job requires security clearance, while in are in such areas, everyone else with that same or better clearance can watch you, as can watchdog groups of private citizens with security clearance. The moment an e-mail is sent through non-secure channels, it is public domain. The first thing done to a new piece of paperwork, be it an official document or an internal document, it is scanned into the database and put in the public domain. You don’t like it, don’t take a government job. (Please note: This does not mean that agencies like the CIA and the like cannot do their job, since their entire organization has security clearance the rules are a bit different. But in those cases, they need their own sets of internal checks and balances). Whistleblower protections need to be very powerful to go hand-in-hand with this.

Without those two things, our Republic will continue to be vulnerable to a slew of differing levels of corruption. Nothing will stamp out corruption, but limiting money’s corrupting influence and drastically stepping up the level of transparency, Rome will fall again.

  125. Moderation says:

Grr, that last sentence should say:

    “…but without limiting money’s corrupting influence…”

  126. JPark says:

Crap, Captain Video, realism…thanks. We could always vote for Ron Paul and fix everything. You know, he is the next messiah, right?

  127. Moderation says:

CaptainVideo, giving Bush the precise, clean bill he wants (hell, he can have the White House write it, even!), then voting it down is a viable option. Giving Bush what he wants and voting it in, ON PURPOSE, by a tiny margin, sends a horrible message to the voters and the White House alike. Bush must be made to understand that he answers to two other branches of government, and We the People, not to his little group of the “have and the have-mores”. Vote down what he wants every week for the next 6 months, until he finally negotiates up to what We the People want, not He the Petulant wants.

  128. IdahoMoe says:

Why are the Democrats afraid of a president with 30% approval rating?
    SOMETHING IS FISHY!!!

  129. JPark says:

I hope something is fishy IdahoMoe. It is almost impossible for Dems to pull a black op because of the political knowledge of their followers. Reps can do it left and right because their people will swallow whatever they are told.

  130. Fools on the Hill says:

The Dems are afraid of Bush because he will get on his bully pulpit and tell Americans that bin Laden is determined to kill their children. In other words Boo! And the American people will say please do whatever is necessary to save us, Mr. AWOL and Mr. Five Deferment Cheney. The great almighty bin Laden is going to destroy us all with his washing machine parts and a 55 gallon drum of chlorine.

Iran, Iraq coordinating in OPEC to control price of oil: Iraqi minister

    Tehran Times Political Desk
TEHRAN – There is continuous coordination between Iran and Iraq in OPEC to control the price of oil, Iraqi Oil Minister Hussein Shahristani said in an interview with the Mehr News Agency on Tuesday.

There is a satisfactory level of cooperation in the field of oil between the neighboring Muslim countries of Iran and Iraq, both of which enjoy rich petroleum reserves, Shahristani added.

“Iranians are interested in importing Iraqi petroleum for the Abadan petroleum refinery, and they have also asked us to supply the Kermanshah refinery,” he noted.

  133. Jay Randal says:

So Nancy Pelosi wants to bake a cake and eat it too. She cuts a deal with Bush on Iraq, selling out Democrats nationwide, but then walks away saying she will not vote for it personally. She intends to do nothing to stop Blue Dog Democrats voting for it, so reeks of hypocrisy.

  134. Publicus says:

Nancy, not voting for it isn’t enough. Remember the 70% of the people who are tired of seeing young soldiers return in coffins? We want the war ended. That means NO SPENDING BILL without withdrawal.

  135. Publicus says:

NOW Iraq WILL become Vietnam. Look for upwards of a quarter of a million troops sent into perhaps a decade of senseless slaughter. Incumbents of BOTH parties are protected by gerrymandering—WE the PEOPLE are stuck with people.

We need to END GERRYMANDERING so we can VOTE OUT OFFICIALS who DEFY THE CONSTITUTION AND THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE.

Here’s an idea…perhaps for moveon.org to promote: WE THE PEOPLE withhold a total of $120 billion from our taxes…because WE didn’t authorize this spending bill. In fact, we voted out the Democrats to end the war. They failed. We won’t go along. Let the politicians send THEIR CHILDREN to DEATH and PAY FOR IT with THEIR MONEY.

  136. Professor Smartass says:

Pelosi and Obey can’t spin their way out of this.

It was bad enough that their timetable was toothless in the first place.

Now they have given up even the pretense of trying to end the war.

Their public statements mean nothing if they aren’t backed up by actions.

It is time to GO TO your reps LOCAL OFFICES and start asking uncomfortable questions.

Don’t make an appointment or dress up, just show up and ask a couple of questions:

When will you end the war? When will you impeach Bush?
You don’t have to yell or argue, but when the staffer finishes handing you a hatful of bullshit, simply say, “Do you believe that yourself?”

Our system is profoundly broken when we have to scream and stamp our feet to get our elected representatives to actually represent us. Before we can fix it, we need to make these steaming sacks of shit in neckties fear us more than Wall Street or the corporations whose boards they hope to sit on when they leave Congress.

    Find their office and go.

    FIND YOUR REPRESENTATIVE

    FIND YOUR SENATOR

If NOT, we can pull out with the knowledge we gave the Iraqis every opportunity to improve their situation and they were unable to do so. If so, their religious and cultural differences failed to advance into the 21st century.

  138. Krashkopf says:

Democratic Presidential Candidates take heed. There are A LOT of rank and file party members – like me – who WILL NOT vote for ANYONE who votes FOR, or supports, this watered down piece of crap legislation.

The Democratic Party was swept into power in 2006 by PEOPLE LIKE ME for the sole purpose of STANDING UP to Bush. If we had wanted another “rubber stamp” Congress, we would have left the GOP in charge.

Its time to KICK Bush’s ass, not kiss it.

  139. valiant venus says:

Dear Krash – Better wake up – the Dem Party has been neutered……the goal was NOT ending the war (with the exception of Feingold, Murtha, etc.) — The goal was the attainment of POWER…..

  140. dd516 says:

Nancy Pelosi is too busy getting her husband Paul the 25 million dollars from her latest bill that was voted on in the middle of the night. Next a nice vacation Europe while things calm down.

  141. m12 says:

    #120

I’m not derailing anything. The minimum wage is part of the bill, so it is up for discussion.

It’s been 5 months. Why haven’t the Dims passed the minimum wage hike to help the working poor?

  142. Karim says:

    nice…good for her.

  143. trippin says:

VOTING “NO” IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH
    BECAUSE VOTING NO ENSURES PASSAGE

LET THE REPUBLICRATS KNOW WE’VE HAD IT WITH THEIR ANTICS

    FILIBUSTER THE IRAQ SPENDING BILL

ALL IT TAKES IS ONE BRAVE SENATOR

(sorry for screaming but I can’t believe I’m watching the Democrats cave, in grand fashion, to a President with a 28% approval rating.)

  144. valiant venus says:

Prof – SmartA$$ – I loved your poem!!! The only literary problem I detect is the lack of realism – - Harry Reid – a “Colonel”?? Puhleeeze…….Keeping the powder dry??? Anti-war Dems are famous for protecting themselves at all costs. They would sell “grandma” to avoid sometimes necessary confrontation. Dems have been weak and spineless in terms of security and surveillance ….. No need to apologize – - National Security has never been the strong suit of Progs and Dems….(since JFK).

  145. trippin says:

Hillary, if you filibuster this bill, I’ll even vote for you.

  146. Ken Wells says:

My wife and I are vets. We are both disabled with MS and are living on a fixed income. We are struggling to raise three children at home in poverty. Illness has brought us low. They took away my medical care so I can’t see a doctor any longer or take the meds I need for MS and high blood pressure.

NONE OF THIS, none of my problems are as important as ending the Iraq occupation, restoring constitutional order, having impeachment on the table and stopping war with Iran.

Don’t continue the occupation just to try and get some domestic policy victory. Don’t sacrifice one for the other.

  147. Happy Guy says:

    So what is she saying?

I voted for the Iraq spending bill, before I voted against it”

    ROTFL, Ah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha

My God this is the worst congress ever.

  148. Funky P says:

I just sent this brief email to Pelosi.
    Madam Speaker;
Count me among the many (and growing rapidly) voting taxpaying american citizens that are pissed off at the constant caving in to the executive branch. We are tired of watching you all bend over and take it. I guess such bending is easy without a spine. This is not what the election of ‘06 was meant to convey. The war is illegal. The perpetrators are war criminals. And the democrats are aiding and abetting a criminal act. How do you sleep at night?
No more illegal war, and impeach the criminals running our government. It is your constitutional duty. When the Attorney General commits perjury and is not impeached, when the president ADMITS to breaking the law (FISA unauthorized wiretaps) and boasts that he will continue to do so??? Is that not grounds enough for impeachment? What will it take? Oral sex from an intern?
    We deserve better!
    An angry Floridian

At least I feel better, but really, does she give a shit?

In a word – - “NO” – Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid could care less about your concern – POWER is the name of the game – and they got that…..

  150. TimeWitch says:

DO NOT EMAIL THEM-instead create recall petitions & strike while the iron is hot! Do not take to the streets, do what works & hold special recall elections-now! Arnie. gov. of CA did this & Gray Davis was thrown out of office, do this for the good of the people instead of what Arnie did, nothing less will change course.

  151. faith says:

Rahm Emanuel, et al, are just full of it ! Untrustworthy, double speaking hypocrites. And, Speaker Pelosi is sitting right there on the edge. She should have forcefully stated that she did not support the removal of the timetable for withdrawal in the Bill. Feingold and John Edwards seem to be today’s sole heros.

  152. Robert Burns says:

I finally found this link to Speaker Pelosi’s incredulous doubletalk on the Iraq Bill which I heard flabbergasted this morning on Air America. Speaker Pelosi stumbles — inarticulately at times — through her comments and then reverses direction midstream starting with her disinclination to vote for an Iraq Bill without timelines, going on to praise the brilliance of this ploy, and then giving herself good cause to vote for it. I feel violated. It’s beginning to look like Democrats missed the magic opportunity to turn things around and are well on their way back to the trough of corruption from whence Newt Gingrich, et al., extricated them in 1994.

It’s time to follow Senator Mike Gravel’s lead with legislation to declare an end to the Iraq conflict, not micromanage through funding. It’s also time to start impeachment proceedings against select persons amongst the many people in the executive branch guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors. Look, if we have to suffer our wealth, security, and future for Congress’ ratification of the ruination of this country and world, we might as well try to cut our losses by running you folks out of office. Or leave.

    What liars and whores.

  153. David Wright says:

As the descent of America to a second rate nation continues, once again we are disappointed by the leadership who promised to make a significant difference. The spin and the illusions once again take precedence over substance. The Democrats again fail to understand what true leadership is and back down to the sick and maniacal Bush. The majority of leaders in Congress are simply spineless.

  154. Cole... says:

Are these, s called Representatives cave-in artists at work or ‘Pug-light wannabes?
In any case the tune is lousy and the footwork is no better, this Pelosi/Reid two step show is a crash. Better to cancel it now: Recall/Reelect/force them to resign–whatever it takes to get them gone.

Better to have 10 true Reps than 100 “betrayers”.

With a Congress that responds to the ‘will of the people’ the vocal acknowledgement of the illegal/immorality of this administration in domestic as well as foreign affairs would be made and Impeachment would be ‘on the table, under the table or on the floor’-not in the lock box with the filibuster.
