Pregnancy discrimination on the rise.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission reports that it is seeing an “increase in pregnancy discrimination charge filings and lawsuits.” Such charges jumped 19 percent from 1997 to 2006, and lawsuits “increased about threefold from six or fewer per year in the early to late 1990s, to 16 or more per year since 2001.” ThinkProgress has reported on troubling instances of discrimination here and here.

Duh – businesses knew that the white male Republican congress and and the Bushies wouldn’t bother to do anything. In the ’70’s insurance covered hair plugs, but not pregnancy.

When I was pregnant with my son in 1983 my company announced that with the new insurance enrollment pregnancy and birth would be covered at 80% instead of 100%. I marched my 8 months pregnant self down to HR and pointed out that they were changing the rules after the fact – they ignored me. Other very pregnant women did the same – they got nervous. One pregnant woman was married to a lawyer – they put a 6 month extension on 100% coverage. I went on maternity leave, but at the end there were ‘no jobs available’ in my class and rate. In a company of 2500+ people. Hah!

Oregon just passed a law to force insurance companies to cover birth control if they cover prescription drugs. Of course, they’ve always covered Viagra.
