Congressional conservatives yesterday held an hour-long memorial for the late Rev. Jerry Falwell on the floor of the House of Representatives, extolling the “incredible and remarkable” religious right leader.
Senior conservative leaders joined the “special order” session, including Minority Whip Roy Blunt (R-MO), the #2 Republican in the House, and Chief Deputy Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA). Also speaking was Rep. Virgil Goode (R-VA), who notoriously warned “American citizens” to “wake up” or “there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office.”
To many Americans, Falwell is best known for his infamous remarks claiming the 9/11 terrorist attacks were God’s punishment on the United States, or that the anti-Christ is alive today and “of course he’ll be Jewish.”
But on the floor of Congress yesterday, Falwell was heralded as a “great leader of America’s conservative movement” whose “strong set of values” and “unshakable moral compass” had made America “a better place.” “More than we all realize,” one member of Congress said, “we are very blessed the he came our way.”
Transcript:

…and even MORE blessed he’s gone…
May 23rd, 2007 at 5:28 pmLOL. According to my Congressional Directory, Eric Cantor is Jewish. Perhaps Mr. Cantor is the Anti-Christ the late Mr. Falwell warned all about. Too funny — I wonder if the rednecks in Cantor’s Virginia district realize they elected a Hebrew to the Congress.
May 23rd, 2007 at 5:29 pmThis post sickens me. I want my tax dollars back for the time they spent on this.
May 23rd, 2007 at 5:29 pmOhhhh, were there snakes? Other than the politicians present….?
May 23rd, 2007 at 5:29 pmThey all seem to love bigots that blame Americans for the events of 9-11
May 23rd, 2007 at 5:30 pmJerry Falwell is dead but his political legacy of hate and discrimination lives on among the fundamentalists. As the face of the original, now-defunct Moral Majority, Falwell built this political action committee by exploiting fear and ignorance. Anti-gay, anti-woman and anti-science, Falwell — along with his friends in the Republican party — spread anger, bigotry and intolerance all the while hiding behind God and a twisted interpretation of “family values.”
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/kirk-snyder/falwells-gay-legacy-hat_b_48562.html?p=2
Some legacy to celebrate – racism, bigotry, hypocrisy, hatred, anti-anybody that wasn’t a white Christian male, ‘moral’ values…
Worthy of tribute in Congress? I don’t think so. How frightening our government has become.
May 23rd, 2007 at 5:31 pmWhy weren’t any of them at Falwell’s funeral if they admire him so much?
May 23rd, 2007 at 5:31 pmGives new meaning to the phrase “Jerry’s kids”
May 23rd, 2007 at 5:32 pm(and don’t forget to include the Liberty U freshman arrested yesterday, who was going to use fire(works) to make sure the funeral wasn’t disrupted.)
I dunno, but it seems like half a dozen incendiary devices going off would have been somewhat disruptive…
I rise tonight to pay homage to Dr. Jerry Falwell. There are few fake Christians that have spread more hate and fear than this minion of the devil.
He was a great leader in America’s conservative movement. Who will do our hate speech and demonization of minorities and gays for us now that this oversized small-man of Republican thought has passed?
I can only hope that other fake Christians will rise to fill this oversized man’s shoes.
May 23rd, 2007 at 5:32 pmMay he RIH!
May 23rd, 2007 at 5:33 pmJerry lived his life guided by a strong set of values (fear and brimstone) and an unshakable moral compass (that unfortunately always pointed to hell).

May 23rd, 2007 at 5:56 pmHere is a comment that I cannot refute…
Americans have officially been living under a dictatorship since at least 1933
Now that Bush authorized the National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive on May 7th
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2007/05/20070509-12.html
in the event of a national emergency under new provisions that will effectively nullify the U.S. constitution. This happens to be additional legislation to all the Presidential that already exist. Nothing has changed since WW2 started.
Go on and debate that info.

Leo – You mean the arthritic Jackass which has come to aptly symbolize the Democrat Party??? Dems will lose next year because they are perceived to be weak on National Defense. The only Dem who can cross over and appeal to moderate Repubs and middle of the road Americans (and thus WIN) is Bill Richardson – unfortunatly, he’s not “progressive” enough to appeal to the extreme left of the Party who are so entrenched in the politics of the Party.

May 23rd, 2007 at 6:27 pmYou have to admire Christopher Hitchens – he HATED Bill Clinton for being a liar who sold out poor people. He hates conservative people who believe in God. He IS an equal opportunity hater……
The sad thing is – Jerry Falwell based his opinion on his religious beliefs – beliefs many on the Left do not tolerate. His beliefs did not include hating ANYONE. He despised immoral behaviour – but always left the door open if someone felt contrite for past immorality and move forward with their lives. I disagreed with Falwell on several issues, but always admired the fact he wasn’t a fawning sycophant. Of course, the intolerance of the Left has no room for various opinions. And you think Elmer Gantry is confined to religion? Look in the mirror……

One of the reasons the Democrats took both Houses last year is because voters saw the road religious fanaticism was taking us down and decided they didn’t want to go there. Keep it up, repukes, please!
May 23rd, 2007 at 6:43 pm#39 – Of course it was – you better have a tune-up on your sense of humour!
May 23rd, 2007 at 6:45 pm“His beliefs did not include hating ANYONE. He despised immoral behaviour ”
That’s the same as saying Bush didn’t say Iraq had anything to do with 911. Bush didn’t say it but he implied it over and over again. Same as Falwell. He didn’t say he hated gays (and other groups of people) but he wasn’t showing them any love.
Bottom line is that Falwell was good at being a snake oil salesman.

With all due respect I find you and yours predisposed to absurd world views and offensive “senses of humor”
That aside I will agree with you that Dems struggle with the “toughness” factor. Luckily the nation is moving away from that weird “we validate ourselves through anger” posture and are coming around to a more realistic and modern understanding of our place on the world stage. Thus I think you are wrong. The next president will not be the allegeded American cowboy manifest destinier but the globalist world diplomat. Your side fails to understand the concept and will suffer the consequences of this lack of comprehension
Jane – I couldn’t imagine you in hell….You seem to be a compassionate person who’s adored by her husband, respected by her community and is kind to animals. Hopefully, I won’t be there either!

May 23rd, 2007 at 7:26 pm#34,
Valiant Venus,
You wrote, “The sad thing is – Jerry Falwell based his opinion on his religious beliefs – beliefs many on the Left do not tolerate. His beliefs did not include hating ANYONE. He despised immoral behaviour – but always left the door open if someone felt contrite for past immorality and move forward with their lives.”
Has it ever occurred to you that tolerance, like any other virtue, has its limits? That without such limits, tolerance slides into acceptance of any conduct or value whatsoever, no matter how good or evil? There are many philosophical works on the nature and limits of tolerance, such as Susan Mendus’s Liberalism and the Limits of Tolerance or, even more pertinently, J.S. Mill’s On Liberty. Try reading these works sometime; you might learn something about the concepts you so unthinkingly use to irritate people on this site.
You’re also somewhat confused about what the issue is. It’s not whether “the left” or “liberals” are against Falwell’s expression of his opinions. He had the Constitutional right to express his opinions, just as the KKK does. The issue is whether those opinions merit any acceptance in a civilized community. That is the issue, and his didn’t, which is why so many people criticized him for them. You’re engaging in your usual straw-man tactics.
Moreover, you seem to think it’s undeniably true that we know which behavior is moral and which is immoral. This is just a conceit on the part of faith-based moral absolutists like yourself. The best human minds have sought the true morality for well over 25 centuries, and no one’s found it yet. (If you think otherwise, try taking a course in moral philosophy sometime. You’re welcome to attend mine.) The only people who think they have the true morality are those who derive their ethics from their religion, which, of course, they refuse to submit to any rational test since that would mean they would have to acknowledge that they might be wrong.
“The left”–a mythical, monolithic construct of your own imagination–is no more intrinsically opposed to religious beliefs than “the right”–another mythical, monolithic construct–is intrinsically in favor of them. What any civilized person should judge to be intolerable in Falwell’s public pronouncements was the rampant demonization of homosexuals, atheists, feminists, pagans, the ACLU, and others that he so often engaged in (especially right after 9/11). Instead of distorting the issue to suit your own ideology, why don’t you try being fair to your intellectual opponents and articulate your disagreement with them in an honest way? Are you afraid? Do you know what fairness is? Intellectual honesty?
“Of course, the intolerance of the Left has no room for various opinions.”
This is an ignorant comment. Hasn’t it ever occurred to you that not all opinions are true, valid or correct? That some opinions–for example, that females are intellectually innately inferior to males (as Aristotle thought)–are incompatible with a civilized community? How about the opinion that all lawyers are corrupt–particularly woman lawyers like yourself? Surely that opinion isn’t true, valid or correct. Don’t confuse tolerance of Falwell’s odious views with indifference to them or a lack of criticism of them. Tolerance is entirely compatible with criticism.
May 23rd, 2007 at 7:30 pmIt is a great day to celebrate the death of Jerry Falwell. Anytime these hatemongering Christians kick the can is a great day. Vile Virus, when you kick the can I will drink one in your honor.
The Christians are the one group propping up Bush and supporting his Crusade, they are the 28%ers that are responsible for the deaths and manglings going on in Iraq. You choose to support Bush at the cost of our finest, I have no respect for you pious pukes.
And in honor of the late Jerry, I will let the kids burn a few pages from the bible tonight. The fire has such a glow when the pages torch, especially the pictures. I guess that’s one good thing you Christians have brought us, paper to start a fire.
Hallelujah!!!
May 23rd, 2007 at 7:32 pm#55
Yes, this is the same Eric Cantor who has trouble answering questions when his incredible hypocrisy is exposed. Being a NoVA resident, we also know how ignorant you downstaters are and wish for the day when you righfully merge with West Virginia.

May 23rd, 2007 at 7:46 pmIt’s amazing that some idiots think that republicans are fiscally conservative. Under Ronald Reagan the deficit went over one trillion dollars for the first time in our history, and that was so he could give tax breaks to the rich. Clinton left office with a trillion dollar surplus. Now the deficit is over 8 trillion dollars, again so that rich people can have more tax breaks, and republicans pat themselves on the back for being fiscally responsible. At least voters are starting to disregard the BS and wake up to the facts.
May 23rd, 2007 at 7:48 pmDid Falwell really say the anti-Christ was coming and that he’d be Jewish?! In view of how many Jewish Neoconservatives were the brains behind the Rape of Iraq and the murder of some 700,000 or so innocent civilians and soldiers, perhaps there was something to that old huckster and fraud…
BTW did anybody see the TINY ONE SENTENCE Reuters news item from May 11th?
20,000 Homes Slated for Jews in Capital — Jerusalem–Israeli officials announced plans yesterday to build 20,000 homes for Jews in three neighborhoods in east Jerusalem, angering Palestinians who want the land for a future state. Reuters.
And then exactly one week later we are seeing a full military assault on the impoverished Palestinians in Gaza and Lebanon…now a religious person might be tempted to say this was the work of some kind of demon.
May 23rd, 2007 at 8:10 pmugh. that video made me throw up a little in my mouth.
sickening.
May 23rd, 2007 at 8:14 pmProf. Colby – So nice of you to come and share you intellectual pronouncements with the great unwashed.
No offense, Professor, but according to YOU (and other members of your political persuasion), “The issue is whether those opinions merit any acceptance in a civilized community. That is the issue, and his didn’t, which is why so many people criticized him for them.” According to you (and like-minded individuals) Falwell’s opinions merit no acceptance. Fine – opinions are NOT fact. “Civilized” people disagree with your take on morality – shocking, I know….Some civilized people regard homosexual behaviour as barbarian a behaviour as beastiality. Once again, you couch “your OPINIONS – to which you are entitled – in lengthy philosophical discourse – but opinions nonetheless.
(FYI, IF I ever need an “EXPERT” witness in Philosophy, that’s when your opinion will be regarded as worth it’s weight in gold.)
You might be surprised to find that many decent people disagree with homosexual behaviours, the “right” to abortion, adultery, extra-marital sex, the communist influence of the ACLU, etc.
(I’m certain “civilized communities” disagree with such conservative morality – so what?)
“The leftâ€â€“a mythical, monolithic construct of your own imagination–is no more intrinsically opposed to religious beliefs than “the rightâ€â€“another mythical, monolithic construct–is intrinsically in favor of them. ”
Tell that to Ellen Johnson of American Atheists, George Soros, “Progressive Insurance” magnate Peter Lewis, et al. The beauty of this country is the freedom to practice whatever religion an individual wishes. Atheists enjoy the freedom to not worship anything. Agnostics should cherish their right NOT to make up their mind.
Your Smugness, you make grand and sweeping pronouncements about my “imagination” – funny, your hyperbole and hypocrisy are never more evident than when you pre-suppose to KNOW anything about political opponents. (Funny, I don’t recall you ever taking on the liberal conspiracy wacks of 9/11 or their flights of fantasy…) The only aspect of feminism any of my consevative female friends disagree with is the “right” to abort. We want equal pay for equal work – but we LIKE men to be…men. We aren’t looking for a substitute “girlfriend”. We have enough of those.
“Hasn’t it ever occurred to you that not all opinions are true, valid or correct?” Of course. You ask the question – but I wonder if your question applies to YOU?
I’m certain you know your educational discipline inside and out….but you do not seem to foster much in the way of dissent of your OPINIONS. Hopefully, I’m jumping to conclusions, (as I’m certain you NEVER would,) and you are the most engaging and interesting professor young minds could have inform them…..
FYI – some lawyers are corrupt, some are ambulance chasers extraordinaire – it matters not whether they are male or female; integrity is the KEY…..Many are honest and caring……some wield their knowledge like a club…..many help the voiceless……

May 23rd, 2007 at 8:59 pmIt’s time to start a new religion. It will probably begin by hating Republics and all the lies that they stand for… it will then move onto Jesus being a Liberal and that the Conservative Pharasees put him to death because Jesus exposed these liars and told the common folks how these liars were stealing money from them…oops… didn’t Jerry Falwell coax poor people to send him money to support his lies and hate?
Too bad Jerry Falwell didn’t hang around for the Rapture. Guess he died instead of being “raptured to heaven” along with the rest of these idiots. Jerry must have been human after all. The good news is that boy Bush will join him someday among the burning coals of hell.

That same *morality* says that you shouldn’t speak in public, lest you be stoned. Yet there we have it, good old Falwell, is just *adored* by you for his bigotry, and the same *bible* that says you’re a st*pid c*nt for speaking out is your *excuse* for defending him.
What a st*pid little piece of sh*t you are – no wonder you love a hatemonger like falwell…
See st*pid c*nt, we don’t care if you have your idealic sense of *marriage*, and *childbirth*, and we’re not telling you that you *have* to divorce or have an abortion. Yet, here you are, trying to subject your narrow minded vision of taliban repression on others, and excusing yourself with a *morality* defense. How Valiant Ben Laden of you!

Well, when you can *prove* that your religion is in fact correct, then you might have a right to inflict that *opinion* on others. Until then, Valiant Ben Laden, you are no different than the Virtue and Vice police of Islam. If anything, you’re worse, because you actually recognize there is danger in religious fanaticism, while not admitting *you* also represent that danger!

May 23rd, 2007 at 10:13 pmUranus – I NEVER condone violence against liberals, Progressives, homosexuals, abortion seekers or providers, adulterers, etc. As you know, I am anti-death penalty. To compare my standards with bin Ladins BEHAVIOUR is ONE of the more ignorant statements you’ve made. Why am I not surprised????
Tooodles, ignoramus……..

May 23rd, 2007 at 10:44 pmBehaviour, tranny? You really aren’t very bright, are you? You have been apprised of your transgressions against American English and yet you still spell like the English/Aussies/Canadians. San Diego, huh?
May 23rd, 2007 at 10:59 pmValley girl:
Lots of o’s in tooodles there girlfriend. Although I respect your clear handle on information, your context is clearly based on hatred, anger, and fear. If you were to apply your intellect even fractionally on the polar opposites of that which appears to drive you, you could effect real change and benefit upon this world. I encourage you to do so. Something pains you, let it go. The rewards will be immeasurable and the pain will cease to consume you.
Ooops who was I talking to again?
May 24th, 2007 at 12:14 amThis post sickens me. I want my tax dollars back for the time they spent on this.

While you’re at it, get your tax dollars back from Pelosi’s stupid trip to Greenland.

Anyone who doubts that the Left is overrun by intolerant and hate-filled miscreants need only to look at the message boards on any topic here at TP. Conservatives and the Right are served up like fresh meat to piranhas multiple times a day. We’re accused of bigotry and intolerance. We’re called hate-filled and immoral, but what do we find here—examples of moral superiority—decent and honorable behavior? Surely not! If the Left is so much better than the Right, why don’t they show us what that looks like? Give us the shining examples of tolerance, morality and intellectual superiority that supposedly are in your possession. Show us your upstanding character and your better way. Sadly, you are only reflections of your leaders—pessimistic, narrow-minded, and devoid of anything constructive. You love your ideals more than life itself and policy more than humanity. You’ve shown us that time and again by the way you disagree.
May 24th, 2007 at 10:34 amFac,
Project much? Let’s take a look at some of your public leaders, not little people talking on a blog:
“I do know that it’s true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could, if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down.” –Bill Bennett, former Education Secretary and author of “The Book of Virtues,” Sept. 28, 2005
“You know, I don’t know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we’re trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it. It’s a whole lot cheaper than starting a war.” –Pat Robertson, calling for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, Aug. 22, 2005
“If Al Qaeda comes in here and blows you up, we’re not going to do anything about it. We’re going to say, look, every other place in America is off limits to you, except San Francisco. You want to blow up the Coit Tower? Go ahead.’” –FOX News Channel’s Bill O’Reilly, after San Francisco voted to ban military recruiters from city schools, Nov. 8, 2005
God’s pattern is for men to be the leaders, both in the church and in the family… “Women should listen and learn quietly and submissively. I do not let women teach men or have authority over them.”
– Pat Robertson, reciting a passage from I Timothy in his book, Bring It On, quoted from Nicholas D Kristof, “Peter, Paul, Mary … and God” (The New York Times: February 28, 2004) †â€
JERRY FALWELL: And, I know that I’ll hear from them for this. But, throwing God out successfully with the help of the federal court system, throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools. The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say ‘you helped this happen’.
May 24th, 2007 at 11:41 amOh, and have you ever visted the comments section at lGF or Free Republic? Have you ever wondered why the vast majority of conservative blogs don’t even allow comments, while almost all liberal ones do?
Oh, sorry. Forgot that logic doesn’t work with people like you.
May 24th, 2007 at 11:45 amYour Smugness, you make grand and sweeping pronouncements about my “imagination†– funny, your hyperbole and hypocrisy are never more evident than when you pre-suppose to KNOW anything about political opponents. The only aspect of feminism any of my consevative female friends disagree with is the “right†to abort. We want equal pay for equal work – but we LIKE men to be…men. We aren’t looking for a substitute “girlfriendâ€. We have enough of those.
Gosh Zooey – I took your suggestion to take a look in the mirror and burst into song, “I Feel Prettyâ€â€¦..Thanks!

And I suppose you don’t make sweeping generalizations about progs/liberals–including calling us all “Birkenstock wearers,” as if that is some major sin. I, BTW, don’t own any Birkenstocks but do have, like Condi Rice, some Ferragamos. I also suppose Mary Cheney likes “men to be men” rather than having a girlfriend. Give up your silly cliches, if you want to have anything but a negative impact here.
May 24th, 2007 at 5:44 pmBTW, if you look in a mirror and start singing “I Feel Pretty,” perhaps it’s time to get a new pair of contacts, dearie.
