Mary Cheney’s baby is born.
Vice President Cheney’s daughter Mary gave birth today to Samuel David Cheney. (There’s a digital baby shower HERE.)
Under Virginia law, Mary’s partner of 15 years, Heather Poe, “will have no legal relationship with her child. She can’t adopt as a second parent. She won’t have her name on the birth certificate.” President Bush will still not say whether or not he supports gay adoption.

If she loves another woman, then isn’t she rejecting the role of bearer of children, since the one she loves cannot provide that? I am really confused as to the roles these two women are playing. ONe wants the traditional role of motherhood so badly she is willing to have a baby with a father from whence and from who is unknown and might even be jeapardising the health of that baby in the future, but on the other hand, she simply cannot lie with a man in order to fulfill that very womanly desire. Cut the crap! The child does not carry Dick’s ‘Y’ chromosome. His entire cellular structure comes from Lynn as monopodial DNA is derived from the mother of the mother. Of the nuclear base chromosomes, Samuel has – on average – 6 from Lynn and 6 from Dick and positively 12 from the donor, plus the ‘Y’.

I know that, but then, if that is the case, why is the father of this baby unknown and if they do know (I am assuming there was a medical transfer of sperm from some sperm bank and not the act of coitus) why is the father kept a secret? When I first heard that Poe and Cheney were expecting a child, and not knowing which one was actually pregnant, I guessed that it had to be Mary Cheney.
With all those millions in deferred Halliburton money just waiting to be inherited and a sister who apparently doesn’t use birth control (5 children in the last ten years), what are the chances that Dick and Lynn would leave anything to a child who is, 1) not genetically related to them, and, 2) not guaranteed to be a part of their daughter’s life, should she break up with Poe and Poe decided not to allow Cheney to see the child?
What does any of this say for Heather Poe, presumably a republican who is supportive of the Bush-Cheney administration, and Mary Cheney, a rabid supporter of Bush-Cheney who, along with her sister, have been operatives in the administration and the Bush-Cheney campaigns?
What kind of people are these, who think so little of themselves, that they would allow themselves to be treated by the laws of their government so insignificantly?
How patriotic can they be, how sincerely can they believe in the idea that is American democracy, “all people created equal” and rule of law?
And how real is their love and commitment to each other when they work for the very special interest group (Republicans) that stays up nights working overtime trying to think up ways to deny basic rights and protections, not only for themselves, but for their ‘other,’ the person that they’ve chosen as their partner through life?
On a lighter and more speculative note, before this baby came into the picture, I thought that a great deal of money had to have been deposited into an offshore account in Heather Poe’s name in order for her to forget about the basic protections and recognition that any married person wants and expects.
Now (since the baby), I think there has to be some understanding between her and the Cheneys: If she and Mary break-up, should she be cut out of the child’s life, she will publish a tell-all book about the whole damned lot of them.

May 25th, 2007 at 9:29 pmQuite honestly, I feel sorry for the baby. I don’t know the mother, and I’m not sure whether she is like her father or not. If she is, then the baby is likely to be brought up like a heartless uncaring bastard from hell, which is not his fault– it is the fault of the parents. If she isn’t like her father, then the baby should grow up without overmuch corrupting influence and should also be relatively tolerant of others(remember– lesbian parents).

Given the men’s dormitory / frathouse ambiance of this administration and political wolf pac, potential donors are legion.
Grampa Cheney could easily have talked Dubya into yet another circle jerk and secured his place near the Bush throne in the New Feudal World Order of our newest American Century (invitations to the coronation will be released after NSPD-51/HSPD-20 has been invoked).
I cannot picture Karl Rove being the donor (thank God for my stunted imaginative powers). I can, however, easily picture Wolfowitz pulling off the old switcheroo in front of Mary and Heather’s fridge, substituting his own contribution while the trusting couple are distracted elsewhere in the flat.
Given the way Grampa Cheney gave up Libby like some dime-a-dozen Lee Harvey Oswald, it seems unlikely that patsy would be in the running.
As for Rumsfeld, I guess if Zsa Zsa’s husband could entertain us with his claims to Danielyn’s paternity, the flannel mouthed field marshall could do the same.
Seems to me like Maury, Entertainment Tonight and the National Enquirer are letting us down on this one.

Actually, my wife and I did this, as have dozens of other lesbian couples. The court has to handle each case individually, but we were able to sue each other to establish dual maternity before our kids were born. That way we both got onto the birth certificates on day one.
People who hate gays should be the ones most into gay marriage — until we filed the birth certificate I had no legal rights — or responsibilities — to my own genetic kids. My wife could have gone on welfare or I could have run off to join the circus and never paid a nickel in child support.
