When GSA administrator Lurita Doan appeared before the House oversight committee in March, she could remember there were “cookies on the table” during one of her meetings, and that she was seated next to a “young perky looking” woman. And that was about it.
She repeatedly claimed ignorance about the partisan PowerPoint presentation that was delivered to her agency’s employees, and her statement afterwards asking fellow GSA officials how they could “help ‘our candidates‘ in the next elections.”
Now she has to explain herself again. In a letter today, oversight chairman Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) called on Doan to testify on June 7 about a new Office of Special Counsel (OSC) report stating that her partisan activities violated federal law.
Waxman specifically wants to know why, during interviews with the OSC, Doan tried to tar the GSA officials who spoke out about her partisan activities. Doan told investigators:
[T]here’s not a single one of those who did not have somewhere in between a poor to totally inferior performance … . [S]ome of the most vocal proponents or the most articulate speaking out against me are also the people who are people I’ve either moved on or they are, I don’t want to say permanently demoted but they’re kind of, until extensive rehabilitation of their performance occurs, they will not be getting promoted and they will not be getting bonuses or special awards or anything of that nature.’
But according to the OSC investigation, the performance reviews of all these employees were positive. Waxman now wants question Doan about whether she is retaliating against these people for cooperating with the investigation. Waxman writes:
Your allegations are also a matter of grave concern to me. Government employees who cooperate with congressional and federal investigations perform a vital service to the nation. It would be a serious abuse if your statements were part of an effort to retaliate against these witnesses for cooperating with the Oversight Committee’s investigation.

If you good witness, we’ll give you COOKIES!!!
If you “can’t recall,” no cookies.

May 24th, 2007 at 6:32 pmGOP lined with efforts to Silence discussion about illegal activity
No longer can the GOP claim that SES personnel in the GSA are “unrelated” to the GOP: They are one in the same. All illegal activity by SES personnel in any branch of government can be presumed to be official GOP political policy, not merely a management problem.
This deserves some attention: “Government employees who cooperate with congressional and federal investigations perform a vital service to the nation.” Let’s consider the broader implications, and lessons of what we are learning from GSA, and the WH political connection to official policy. However, let’s not isolate ourselves to funding, and facilities under GSA, but let’s look at the broader implications of the quote.
“Government employees who cooperate with congressional and federal investigations perform a vital service to the nation.”
1. What evidence does the Congress have that current and former US government counsel and employees have attempted to dissuade public discussion or testimony by former US government employees on issues related to larger GOP abuses of power;
2. Is there evidence that the Committee has that specific legal counsel associated with the White House, GOP, and other US government entities and contracting intermediaries have attempted to use subpoenas to identify, silence, and dissuade cooperating witnesses from providing evidence of war crimes to the Congress?
3. What information does the Congress have that former White House counsel assigned to litigation over the NSA issue may have used their official positions while in the White House to hide evidence of Geneva war crimes; but have not — as required — fully cooperated with Congressional subpoenas related to the RNC e-mails?
4. How have outside counsel, NSA intermediaries, and other contractors working for DOJ to process the NSLs issued gag orders, or required contractors to sign confidentiality agreements over issues that are illegal, unlawful violations of FISA

Call her back for so she can lie some more.

The Republican/conservative model for women, even successful women, has always been dubious. Nancy Reagan was a venal, superstitious little hag whose sole contribution was gazing worshipfully at Ronnie, yet she’s still held up as a Republican icon. I think she learned that trick from Pat Nixon, but it’s possible she came to it naturally.
And then you’ve got that whole schizo Phyllis Schlafly “women should be in the kitchen even though I’m running around the country organizing” conundrum. It’s no wonder they’re nuts.

a tad stalinist … no?
just wait for the re-education camps…
May 24th, 2007 at 6:42 pmIf this wasn’t so stupid it would be funny. Just like in the “Stepford Wives,” republican women are perky and know how to bake perfect cookies…oh, and Lurita… Easy-Off saves time.
May 24th, 2007 at 6:45 pmHow many soldiers died in Iraq today?
Ah, screw that humanitarian stuff. So, this Lurita Doan, doesn’t she have like the worst hairdo EVER! I mean, whoever lets her out of the house with that mop needs to be slapped.
By the way, what goes best with red herring, chablis or rose?
May 24th, 2007 at 6:47 pmJust more Democratic criminalization of politics.
Or is it Republicans politicizing crime?
May 24th, 2007 at 6:47 pmI grew up surrounded by Republican ladies - the whole flippin’ town. They only pretend to not understand - underneath they are hard as nails (and not in a good way.) They defer to the rich white men they marry and/or are related to, but everybody else is dirt under their Faragamos, and they will sell you out in a heartbeat (if they had one.)
The problem is the Congress is primarily composed of rich white men, so when Lurita and Monica show up, they are reminded of Mom or the wife and they KNOW the kind of damage these ”ladies” can do.
May 24th, 2007 at 6:54 pmThat’s a good plan Ms. Dorito Head — use an excuse that gets you in even more legal trouble.
I’m sure she has already been described somewhere as dumber than a box of rocks. Sadly, the GSA would be better off with that box of rocks as the administrator.
May 24th, 2007 at 6:55 pmShe’s more doable than Doolittle.

Yeah, that about covers it… oh, were the, um, cookies chocolate chip? and was the woman married?
May 24th, 2007 at 7:01 pmLurita is good for comic relief. Now my question is, if the report states she broke law, what are the consequences, aside from another trip to committee?
Oh, apparently the President decides, because she is his appointee. Never mind.

1. Don’t worry, there are plenty of morons of our gender, too (cough, Dubya.)
2. Those of us men who were raised right by our mamas appreciate strong, intelligent women. Not coincidentally, we were also raised to respect the rights of others and to be compassionate. We are, in other words, “liberals.”

May 24th, 2007 at 7:48 pmQuick poll:
1. She’s unbelievably arrogant.
2. She’s so incredibly stupid as to not grasp the fundamentals of STFU.
I vote for #2.
May 24th, 2007 at 7:57 pmRelive this snoozer again?? Slow news day, huh? ZZZZZzzzzzzz
May 24th, 2007 at 8:22 pmThe good news - at least the saps in Henry Waxman’s district can surmise with reasonable certainty that Henry is in DC and showing up to the office….
Tranny, new info came out. Is that so hard to understand. Your behaviour (yeah, British spelling) is pathetic.

May 30th, 2007 at 10:19 amThe twit needs to bring her own drinking water next time so they don’t finger print her glass like she said they might do. She is one neuron short of having a fractional part of an operating brain. Total incompetence just like every other Bush appointee.
I am looking forward to her testimony. She’s as dumb as a republican rock. They have to send a car for her otherwise she’d never find her way to the Capital. Has someone taken many hours to explain to this rock that she can go to jail for lying before Congress?
