I grew up surrounded by Republican ladies – the whole flippin’ town. They only pretend to not understand – underneath they are hard as nails (and not in a good way.) They defer to the rich white men they marry and/or are related to, but everybody else is dirt under their Faragamos, and they will sell you out in a heartbeat (if they had one.)

The problem is the Congress is primarily composed of rich white men, so when Lurita and Monica show up, they are reminded of Mom or the wife and they KNOW the kind of damage these ”ladies” can do.

The Republican/conservative model for women, even successful women, has always been dubious. Nancy Reagan was a venal, superstitious little hag whose sole contribution was gazing worshipfully at Ronnie, yet she’s still held up as a Republican icon. I think she learned that trick from Pat Nixon, but it’s possible she came to it naturally.

And then you’ve got that whole schizo Phyllis Schlafly “women should be in the kitchen even though I’m running around the country organizing” conundrum. It’s no wonder they’re nuts.
