Feingold: ‘This Is No Time To Back Off’»

Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI) responded today to congressional war critics who dropped the Iraq timeline because they feared that “White House attacks” would be “politically threatening“: “Tell that to the families who lose their loved ones in the next few months while we’re dillying and dallying.”

Speaking on MSNBC, Feingold took aim at the “toothless supplemental” currently working its way through Congress. Calling the bill “weak” and “a step backward,” Feingold said, “This is no time to back off. We have ratcheted-up the pressure successfully in the last few months.”

He warned lawmakers seeking to delay action on Bush’s Iraq strategy until September that the White House will use the opportunity to prolong the war even further:

You know what’s going to happen in September? They’ll bring General Petraeus back and he’ll say, Just give me until the end of year. I think things are turning around. And then we’ll be out of session, come back in late January, February, and the fact is a thousand more troops will lose their lives in a situation that doesn’t make any sense and it is hurting our military, hurting our country. This should not wait till September.

Watch it:

Feingold’s skepticism is well-placed. Gen. Petraeus recently said he will not have “anything definitive” to say about the war in his September review, leaving open the possibility that the administration will ask for more time. Meanwhile, the White House is making plans to increase the occupation’s presence in Iraq to over 200,000 troops by the end of the year.

UPDATE: Feingold will join Sens. Chris Dodd (D-CT), John Kerry (D-MA), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), and Patrick Leahy (D-VT) in voting against the new Iraq supplemental.

Digg It!

Transcript:

FEINGOLD: This is George Bush’s war. I’m taking aim at those in Congress who have caved in to the idea that somehow George Bush should be able to continue the war indefinitely without any plan to end it. So I believe there were many other options, including coming back once again with a proposal for a timeline or, even better, a timeline enforced by using the power of the purse to end this war.

This is no time to back off. We have ratcheted-up the pressure successfully in the last few months, under the great leadership of Senator Harry Reid, our majority leader. This is a step backward and we need to get back on track to end this war because the American people want that and it’s the best thing for our national security.

ROBACH: It’s interesting you said, This is a step backward, because we heard from Senator Harry Reid yesterday saying that this bill is still a big first step and more than the president ever expected he’d have to agree to. Well, obviously, he’s acknowledging that the language is weak.

I mean, is that a fair assessment?

FEINGOLD: You know, I don’t think it does much.

I think it’s weak. I think it’s sad that when Senator Reid and I joined together last week on a vote, we actually got 29 votes, but we needed all the Democrats and some Republicans to come together to vote for a timeline to end the war by the end of next March and to cut off the funding after the troops have been safely redeployed.

So the problem is is that this does not move us in that direction in a serious way. We will have more Americans killed, more Americans maimed, more Americans kidnapped in a situation that doesn’t make sense. And this bill is not up to that issue. It is not up to that tragedy that needs to end.

ROBACH: And yet we’re hearing from Democrats that, you know, Hold on, in the fall we can revisit this. There will be another debate. They believe that events on the ground will continue to deteriorate and that they’re going to be able to get some Republican support to actually get something to the president that fits more what you were hoping for in the first place.

Do you think that’s a real possibility?

FEINGOLD: Tell that to the families who lose their loved ones in the next few months while we’re dillying and dallying on this thing.

This should not wait til September.

Keep talking this up, Russ. Get others on board. It’s what the people want.

  3. TripMaster Monkey Says:

Amen, Feingold. They shouldn’t wait another damned day.

It’s a shame Feingold isn’t running for President, but Kucinich would be a good choice as well…of course, that’s assuming we have another election, and it isn’t already fixed.

  4. AboveTheClouds Says:

Bush and Petraeus have only one “plan” for Iraq: hold on until January 2009, hand the keys to the new Democratic President and say, “It’s you probelm, now.” As long as Bush can stay in Iraq, he can’t say he “lost” the war, even though he has yet to convince even half of America to give a shit about Iraq, let alone make any sacrifice for it.

  5. DM Says:

#1 ~ He’s using the stick he’s got. He’s not the Majority Leader, he’s a Senator from Wisconsin. And he’s got more courage than the rest of Congress combined.

Why the hell can’t we elect this guy President???

  6. profmarcus Says:

i agree it’s no time to back off, but i have no faith whatsoever that, no matter how energetic our efforts are in pushing our congressmen, we are not going to see any results… i think we are past that and any real efforts at change must entail mass action… as long as most of us are sitting around, going about our daily lives, watching the american idol finals, or, like a lot of us here, blogging our little hearts out, nothing is going to happen… if russ would like to step up and issue a call for that kind of action, i would be more than happy to bestir my own butt in response… we desperately need someone to be a public, highly visible, credible catalyst… is that you, russ…?

And, yes, I DO take it personally

  7. Karp's Disciple Says:

Feingold is the man who should be our next president. It says a lot about this nation when he doesn’t stand a chance.

  10. stopthecons Says:

    Exactly, Mr Feingold.

This war must not go on indefinitely, and I don’t want another dime of MY income spent on killing innocent people in iraq. Well, the politicians tell us that only the “bad guys” are killed.

We need more people to stand on morals and demand an end to this war. period.

War doesn’t bring peace. This should be quite obvious by now.

  18. Larry from C Says:

Yesterday Dennis Kucinich spent an HOUR on the House floor explaining in excruciating detail that Bush will not leave Iraq until they pass the Hydrocarbon law.

That is the only BENCHMARK Bush truly wants to achieve.

The Hydrocarbon law will give 70% of the profits from Iraq’s untapped oil to Exxon, BP Chevron etc. The estimate is $220 TRILLION in untapped oil in the Iraq ground. 70% of that is approx. $180 TRILLION.

Bush threatened Iraq by telling them that we will not deliver billions in reconstruction aid UNLESS Iraq agrees to the Hydrocarbon law. In my world this is called a BRIBE. This is outrageous considering we knocked down most of the buildings that need to be reconstructed.

Thank GOD for Dennis Kucinich, a man with a spine and a conscience. The media once again blacked him out. Even Keith Olbermann failed to mention Dennis in his commentary yesterday. Dennis is LEADING while Hillary and Barack are whimpering.

  19. JesusChrist_GodOfWar Says:

The Dems caved. This is NOT what the people voted for during the last election.

So… everyone… how do you like the look and feel of Empire? It appears there is no one left in politics who will do the will of the people.

Hey, Patty, why don’t you define the term “Islamo Fascism” for us?

And this time, if you must cut-n-paste directly from Wikipedia, at least have the common decency to properly attribute your source.

  21. dogjudge Says:

    How about ONE benchmark.

If the Iraqi parliament goes on vacation in July and August, they lose something.

It’s a shame that you don’t hate all religious extremism as much as you hate rationality.

  24. marlow Says:

Shame that after the deaths of three thousand Americans, George Bush doesn’t hate bin Laden enough to track him down and kill him.

  25. Jaded Prole Says:

Kucinich and Feingold are the only consistently principled opposition in Congress. The rest of the Dims aren’t worth spit. The Dims need to hear that if Kucinich is not their candidate, we will either boycott the selection or run an alternative candidate (maybe Kucinich or Nader).

  26. Fed the Fcuk Up! Says:

    #17,
Feingold hates “American facism” more than “Islamo scare tactics”. You would be able to see that if you weren’t always wasting time changing your underwear for each time you wet yourself in fear of gnats.

It is time to march upon Washington to regain control of this country from the corrupt cowards (both Republican and Democrats) and pathetic apologists. The luxury of time is gone and the moment is now.

  27. KRank Says:

Feingold is a true hero where few others exist.

  28. mikeandjeffsmom Says:

    I still can’t believe they caved…

  29. Sharon Says:

It’s time for the one’s of us that want Feingold and Kuchenich to write them and push for them to run as independent’s…On a ticket together perhap’s, start a campaign and work to that end…It’s more than clear to me we need to totaly clean out the swamp that the bush ciminal’s and dem. enabeler’s are swimming in…UGH!….Blessings….

  30. Oversight is a Bitch. Says:

Feingold makes us all proud to be Democrats.
**Bush, on the other hand, seems to work hard to keep Osama bin Laden free and happy.**

  31. Patrick1 Says:

If 75% are against the battle against Islamo Fascism then where are indeed the protests the phone callse etc…could it be the polls to jive with what the moonbats are hearing when they go home?

  32. marlow Says:

The far right in charge of their party are cowards and traitors. They hate and fear freedom and this wretched war is the excuse they need to destroy it. Watch them hiding behind the troops and screaming about safety and freedom…

  33. kaes Says:

Here is more on longterm policy
This strategy would sidestep controversies over bomber aircraft and overflight rights over other Middle East nations and could be expected to trigger a sufficient Iranian counter-strike against US forces in the Gulf — which just became significantly larger — as to compel Bush to forgo the diplomatic track that the administration realists are advocating and engage in another war.

There are many other components of the complex game plan that this Cheney official has been kicking around Washington. The official has offered this commentary to senior staff at AEI and in lunch and dinner gatherings which were to be considered strictly off-the-record, but there can be little doubt that the official actually hopes that hawkish conservatives and neoconservatives share this information and then rally to this point of view. This official is beating the brush and doing what Joshua Muravchik has previously suggested — which is to help establish the policy and political pathway to bombing Iran.

The zinger of this information is the admission by this Cheney aide that Cheney himself is frustrated with President Bush and believes, much like Richard Perle, that Bush is making a disastrous mistake by aligning himself with the policy course that Condoleezza Rice, Bob Gates, Michael Hayden and McConnell have sculpted.

According to this official, Cheney believes that Bush can not be counted on to make the “right decision” when it comes to dealing with Iran and thus Cheney believes that he must tie the President’s hands

  34. Larry from C Says:

Lets consider why the Dems might have caved:

    (1) They were physically threatened or their family
    (2) They’re afraid of being mailed anthrax
    (3) They’re afraid of have a plane “accident” like Paul Wellstone
    (4) They took a sh*tload of money from Big Oil/MIC
    (5) They’re afraid of being attacked for not supporting troops

    So which reason was it?

  38. Patrick1 Says:

#35 The correct answer is they want no responsibility for the war against Islamo Fascism. They would rather worry about tuna plants in Somoa.

  39. trippin Says:

Well, if you really feel that way, Russ: FILIBUSTER THE SPENDING BILL — don’t allow it to get to a vote.

  40. Larry from C Says:

When the Iraq Funding Bill passes tomorrow we’ll officially be a Fascist Country. This will no longer be debatable.

The will of Big Oil and the Military Industrial Complex will have won out over the will of the people (70%). Government and Big Business have now merged to become one.

It is now impossible to determine where our Government begins and the Big Oil/MIC ends.

  41. Not Canadian Yet Says:

    #39,

The “islamo-fascism” is most effectively fought with intelligence, surveillance, security, and police (CIA, FBI).

#32 ~ You are saying dumb things again.

3 out of 4 Americans think the war is going badly.

Since 3 out of 4 Americans - most of whom don’t like spending any tax money at all (much less a half-trillion dollars on foreign projects) supported the war to begin, I think it’s a safe bet that this has nothing to do with being Islamic, and has a whole lot to do with your President being a complete f*ck up.

The only people supporting this “war” are those profiting from it.

I guaran-G*ddamned-tee you, anyone invested in ANY part of the Military-Industrial Complex and/or the Energy Sector is lighting their cigars with hundred dollar bills everytime Shrub ups the ante (see: Dick Cheney)

Senator Feingold, you’re voice is one which must continue to be heard. You have been ahead of the curve on the issue of Iraq before any other of the 99 senators. Please continue to speak out. You really oughta consider running for president. Gore - Feingold 08 has a reall good ring to it!

  50. Posture Says:

All those screaming for Russ Feingold to run for president: think about it. Obviously, he fills a much more valuable role as one of the most vocal watchdogs of the senate, and as one of the only truly liberal leaders, actively watching out for his constiuents. And he has been for … what, 15 years now? He is so much more important doing what he is doing - imagine the senate without a Russ. Who would be publicly taking the democratic leadership to task right now, were he not to win because of a quixotic failed attempt to be president? Pardon my cynicism, I love the guy, have voted for him three times now, and ocnsider him a heroic man of our times. But he’s a scrapper, and scrappers aren’t presidents, they need to be in the ring.

  51. Prince Myshkin Says:

    35,

The Democrats presumably caved for political expediency, occupying the centre ground to try and win the presidency rather than pursuing the best course for the nation.

Interestingly the Economist the other day said that Clinton is the best bet for the Democrats as she is the only candidate that has the support of the blue collar base; the others are seen as rich and out-of-touch. I was wondering what people on here thought of that?

This bill will allow Bush to increase covert activity in Iran and Lebenon under the pretense of freeing the people, but it will effectively bring Israel into a war with all Arab countries. Bush is already considering giving $300 million to Hamas to defend against al-qaeda in Tripoli that was financed by bush’s unchecked spending. When was al-qaeda ever in Tripoli???

This blank check bill is the greatest threat to Israeli security in 30 years.

Any American traitor in congress that votes for this bill not only votes for 20 million more illegal immigrants but is also an anti-semite that is using the middle east as a pretext to WWIII.

The military industrial complex is going to make a killing (in blood and money).

If this bill is not fililbustered it will be the greatest threat to our country, the Arab people, Israel, and the world.

  60. Patrick1 Says:

MORE BAD REVIEWS FOR THE NEW CONGRESS:

Barely six months after their November triumph, Democrats have backed away from their top two policy priorities, leaving House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., foundering on the key issues of Iraq and congressional corruption.

After challenging the White House with a pork-stuffed emergency supplemental funding bill that would have required U.S. military forces to begin pulling out of Iraq by a certain date, Democrats watched President Bush veto that measure, then dithered as he stood like a stone wall daring them to do it again. This week, the Democratic leadership caved, approving emergency legislation that includes 18 benchmarks, but no withdrawal — i.e., surrender — date. That outcome was a given once Bush decided to hold firm because the longer funding was delayed, the more Democrats became exposed to charges they were abandoning U.S. troops in the field. . . .

Similarly, the Democrats’ vow to end the “culture of corruption” in Congress has proven to be empty campaign rhetoric. Only two Democrats joined 187 Republicans on Wednesday in supporting an unsuccessful motion to discipline Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., for violating an ethics rules approved by the House in January. Murtha crossed the line when he threatened to bar spending sought by two Republicans who questioned earmarks in his home district.

The same day, House Appropriations Chairman David Obey, D-Wis., disclosed that earmarks will be inserted into bills only after they’ve been approved by the House and sent to conference committees with the Senate. Under this newly rigged process, there won’t be any of those pesky amendments against things like the Bridge to Nowhere. In fact, House members will only be voting on conference committee reports, not on the thousands of earmarks that will be inserted into the bills covered by those reports. In other words, after some tentative moves in the right direction earlier this year, Democrats are now putting the corrupt system disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff called the congressional “favor factory” back behind closed doors.

Who will be the Democrats’ Abramoff? Because someone will be.

You seem to forget the fact that groups, such as the one Shaha Riza was encamped in were designed to bring freedom and democracy to Iraq and liberate these islamo fascists, as you say. Stop trying to blame the liberals for your slobberings.

This debacle is the bastard child of a decades worth Platonic neo-conservative reactionist orgies, fed by swamp fever.

The democrats adopted this illegitimate child when they agreed to the UN/US resolution authorizing the use of force.

George, with the help of the GOP and the Democrats have basically purchased this blackhole on earth.

Of course, when one is as disastrous and incompetent a military leader as W is, perhaps that cowardice on the trolls part becomes somewhat more understandable

Praise W, sure, no problems there, but actually putting their lives in W’s hands regarding his military leadership, well, that’s just plain nutty, even for the trolls

Do you mean Bush’s cocaine mule Mohammed Atta?

Or the other 18 scapegoats that were trained on US military bases and living with undercover FBI agents as part of project ABLE DANGER?

Please oh Valiant One, share with us which Al Qaeda you are referring to? The pre 9/11 Able Danger Al Qaeda or the new and improved Tripoli Al Qaeda created by the missing $9 Billion in cash that Bush sent in the middle of a warzone.

Care to answer that one with your extraordinary powers of observation?

UPDATE FROM CONGRESS: the bill is NOT printed yet and many interns are not even aware the vote is today.

This will be a midnight vote!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Many will abstain as if that shows they care about the American people.

They need to be there and vote NO!!!!!!

The abstaining will allow fewer congressmen to approve this bill, and give excuses for the ones who abstain.

This is a complete farce. They need to vote NO or explain to the American people that congress is just theater and really has nothing to do with the founding fathers intentions outlined in the constitution!

  78. Tobey Tall Says:

what the democrats should have done is to add one line to the money Bill

” Iraqs Oil belongs 100% to the Iraqi people and only the Iraqi people”

  79. Larry from C Says:

#74 Iraq War Must End…When I called Rahm Emanuel’s office yesterday the lady answering the phone was very standoffish. Rahm Emanuel is one of the most arrogant men in politics and his office reflects his personality. He thinks he’s outsmarting all of us by trying to set up a Republican-Lite Democratic Party. As if we all can’t see through his transparent dreams.

I told her that I’d publish his office number all over the internet and flood her office with calls. I pray this is happening.

  80. Larry from C Says:

I wouldn’t be suprised by a midnight vote. They stole the 2004 election at 2am. They passed the Medicare spening bill at 2am.

  81. Krazny Says:

I think a Feingold/Gore candidacy would be great!!!

    Comment by valiant venus — May 24, 2007 @ 3:21 pm

Given the overall state of the republican nominies, and the severe disarray rightards like you find yourself in, you shouldn’t wish for a Gore/Feingold ticket. They would have a far better chance to win, then say Hillary or Edwards.

  82. valiant venus Says:

Larry - Your paranoia seems well-placed!! Rahm Emmanuel IS arrogant…..but you can blame yourselves for that….Your jubilation in November confirmed his suspicions that you loved and appreciated his efforts on behalf of the Democrat Party. In short - He thinks he was responsible for the November takeover…..deal with it…..or call Dr. Bloom’s office ASAP…..

  83. Publicus Says:

Feingold is a great guy…but he alone doesn’t have the power to do the job. And the Democratic leadership has failed. Time to take to the streets…only the people can end the war now.

    Dear (me),

One of the most important goals of the Committee for a Democratic Majority is to create on online community that can work together to build on our victories last November.

I also wanted the Committee to give you — the Democratic Majority across our country — an opportunity to speak out on the issues that you believe are the most important.

I want to make sure we’re doing all we can to achieve our shared goals. To do so, it would also be very helpful to know a little more about you.

Will you let us know what you think we should be doing, and a little more about yourself?

    http://www.democraticmajority.com/survey

The Committee for a Democratic Majority should not just represent my views — but the views of millions of Americans who stood up last year and insisted that our country change direction. From fighting to end the war to reforming our broken student loan system, I think we’ve made a good start, but I know we can do more.

This survey is meant to help us learn who you are and what you want us to do as we move closer to the 2008 election cycle. I need your frank views as you answer these questions. The more accurate the results are, the better we will be able to focus our efforts.

Please take a minute to answer the Committee for a Democratic Majority survey:

    http://www.democraticmajority.com/survey

Thank you for your help in putting America back on track. I look forward very much to your responses.

    Sincerely,

    Senator Edward M. Kennedy

  87. valiant venus Says:

Krazny - My prediction - Fred Thompson for the Repubs….and he would trounce any Dem you put up with the possible exception of Bill Richardson. Richardson has broad appeal for moderate Repubs and the latino community vote would be a no-brainer. His problem? He is a tax cutter who knows the importance of flourishing business.

Thompson doesn’t have to re-make his positions or personality (**Note** to Romney and Hillary…). The Dems are doing a far better job casting themselves as the Party of Defeat (or as the “surrender specialists” like to say, the Party of D’feet…). When you have moron Dems asking, “since when have Al Qeada been in Tripoli” it is easy to understand the well-deserved “dove” reputation of the Dem Party.

Foolishly, Dems thought polling data indicating dissatisfaction with the way things are to mean specifically, “Disgust with President Bush”. They conveniently forgot to take into account people’s dissatisfaction with: gluttonous (Repub) Congressional spending, high gas prices thanks to no new domestic refineries, porous border, etc. But too many politicos suffer from the same thing - if they stand too close to a painting they can’t see the entire landscape.

The origins of the Great War of 2007 - and how it could have been prevented

Are we living through the origins of the next world war? Certainly, it is easy to imagine how a future historian might deal with the next phase of events in the Middle East:

With every passing year after the turn of the century, the instability of the Gulf region grew. By the beginning of 2006, nearly all the combustible ingredients for a conflict - far bigger in its scale and scope than the wars of 1991 or 2003 - were in place.

  93. Sharon Says:

Larry from C, it’s being done, the question is will they do what they should and promised or continue to cave and stay rep. lite…We will see very soon and then we will do what ever we must to save our country and the world…Blessings

I used no filthy language in my previous reply to you but I guess the censors are “on edge” today.

Gore/Feingold would be excellent examples to the American people of “dovish” leadership. They illustrate clearly for the American people why Dems do NOT enjoy a good reputation in the arena of National Defense.

The arrogant mistake Dem pollsters have been making for months is the “contemporary dissatisfaction” index. Dems foolishly assumed that people were simply fed up with the President and the WAR - PERIOD. Granted there is a high degree of dissatisfaction with the way the war is currently going, but Dems never figured in the following factors:
a.) complete dissatifaction with the porous borders and illegal alien problem.
b.) consumers upset by high gas prices
c.) runaway spending by the Repub Congress.

There are several Repub candidates I like well enough, but I am backing Fred Thompson. The best part, the guy knows who he is and doesn’t need to adopt a new personality (ahem…Hillary) or change positions (note ** to Romney).

As opposed to your *wingnut* candidates that think they live in a fictional television world where *torture* works, and attacking the wrong country is being “hawkish” and protecting the country? Maybe that’s why the majority of Americans now say the lean democratic, and don’t want us in Iraq. But as usual, you’re *out-of-touch* with American values - st*pid c*nt.

Show the polls that demonstrate how America is dissatisfied with this. Are you perhaps projecting your 28% attitude on the greater America again - st*pid c*nt? You do realize that the *majority* of Americans oppose the *fence* and expulsions of illegals - right - st*pid c*nt?

b.) consumers upset by high gas prices Comment by valiant venus — May 24, 2007 @ 5:34 pm

c.) runaway spending by the Repub Congress. Comment by valiant venus — May 24, 2007 @ 5:34 pm

You mean runaway *corruption* by Republicans in Congress! See, America doesn’t mind spending, if they get something from it! But when you wingnuts are in charge, you are so greedy and st*pid, you think only *your* cronies should benefit! St*pid c*nt - another baseless claim, coming from your 28% mentally deranged perspective!

There are several Repub candidates I like well enough, but I am backing Fred Thompson. Comment by valiant venus — May 24, 2007 @ 5:34 pm

Except that that article is bull. Everything indicates that Iran is in no situation to have a deliverable fully functional nuclear warhead by August. Except if it buys from Pakistan.

They’re terrified of WE THE PEOPLE. That’s why they must lie to us constantly and try to pacify us with nonsensical entertainment pseudo-news. They realize that once we’ve figured out their lying cowardly ways we’ll run them out of town. Remember, they’re more scared of us then us of them.

  111. Larry from C Says:

Communities tend to be guided less than individuals by conscience and a sense of responsibility. How much misery does this fact cause mankind! It is the source of wars and every kind of oppression, which fill the earth with pain, sighs and bitterness.
