NYT poll: Opposition to war at all-time high.»

“Americans now view the war in Iraq more negatively than at any time since the war began, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll. Six in 10 Americans surveyed say the United States should have stayed out of Iraq, and more than three in four say that things are going badly there — including nearly half who say things are going very badly, the poll found.”

A large majority of the public — 76 percent, including a majority of Republicans — say that the additional American troops sent to Iraq this year by Mr. Bush have either had no impact or are making things worse there. Twenty percent think the troop increase is improving the situation in Iraq.

A majority of Americans continue to support a timetable for withdrawal. Sixty-three percent say the United States should set a date for withdrawing troops from Iraq sometime in 2008.

Digg It!

And love for congress is at an all time low.

  2. squegeebooo Says:

Well sure, it’s a NYT poll, it’s obviously skewed. I hear the same poll came out in favor of mandatory abortions.

  3. Patrick1 Says:

If that were true then why these kind of moonbat stunts?

The Democrats using the war supplemental to push the minimum wage bill and, in the process, exempt American Samoa from the minimum wage.

So, as this thing drags out, maybe Delmonte should be held responsible for our troops running out of funding. It seems, yet again, the Speaker is trying to exempt American Samoa from the minimum wage to benefit Delmonte’s Starkist subsidiary.

What in the name of God Almight does the minimum wage in American Samoa have to do with funding our troops?

  4. Candyce Says:

Now that a poll is out, maybe Hillary and Obama will be able to figure out what they think about the Iraq Blank Check Bill.

  5. theswan Says:

Then, you might think that it was time to get out. The Democrats need to stick to their previous plans and force our departure.

  6. Not Canadian Yet Says:

The only one’s still supporting it are the 28% kool-aid drinkers and the media.

Well, looks like we got a majority, and if Congress isn’t up to the job, WELL DO IT FOR THEM.

  7. stopthecons Says:

of course! this war is illegal, immoral, and completely ruinous for this country.

the time to end it is now! We need to stop this “foreign policy” of aggression and war - it only creates more hatred for this country and ensures attacks on us in the future.

Maybe we should follow this advice?

“Peace, commerce and honest friendship with all nations — entangling alliances with none.”
    - Thomas Jefferson

We need a new foreign policy - like the founders envisioned for us.

  8. Aaron G. Stock Says:

    Democrats’ choices:

    Keep soldiers there:
More US soldiers will die with no actions that have thus far led to a decrease in rates.

    vs.

    Get them the hell out:
Continue to suffer the derision of Patrick1, Exley, valiant_____, right-wing pundits, “centrists”….

I think I know what I’m willing to endure. I’m calling Bob Casey today.

  9. Patrick1 Says:

Then I guess they can pass a surrender bill without the pork. The moonbats are waiting Mr Reid and Mr. Pelosi.

  10. Fed the Fcuk Up! Says:

And yet those in congress, including all the usual democrats, are telling us that by escalating the hostilities and continuing to fund the “war” (at levels above those requested) that they are doing the peoples bidding.

If you haven’t contacted your reps and told them that they either cut off funding or revoke the AUMF (which, is doable with just a majority vote and cannot be vetoed) or that you will PHYSICALLY remove them from office, then you might as well be pulling the trigger yourself and blowing the head off that American soldier or Iraqi child.

  11. Aaron G. Stock Says:

Everybody: I want to hear MORE whining from Patrick1, etc.

I’m serious. Get out there and use your voices and bodies to end this Iraq Use of Military Force. Your US soldiers will thank you.

    MORE WHINING! MORE DERISION!

  12. iraq war must end Says:

Update on the Iraq Spending Bill (i.e. Bush’s new blank check)

In the bill is an increase to the minimum wage-largest in history.

That is not a bad thing if we had an immigration bill, but since we do not…

This increase in minimum wage will add over 20 million new illegal aliens in the US.

This will also drive the lower class into complete poverty.

Tell your conservative and liberal friends how treasonous this bill is.

Excuses congressmen are using to justify a yes vote:

“Better security” - this is a lie. 16 intelligence agencies agree our continued presence is lowering our security. Also Seymor Hersh revealed that a percentage of every dollr appropriated goes to al-qaeda to establish bases near Iran, in Tripoli (supposedly to fight Hamas), and other areas in the world. So with no oversight and restrictions this money will go to Al-Qaeda.

“I want to show I support the troops” - nothing could be farther from the truth for 2 reasons-first the best way to support the troops is by getting them out of harm’s way for no reason.” second-by not having oversight on Bush this money will never get to the troops it will be used for covert activity to overthrow Hamas and Iran. Also Bush has just created another surge to up our force to 200,000.

Also no oversight allows contractors to entice our border patrols into going to iraq for $150K a year plus $25k bonus.

So he will increase the militia force from 50k to 100k

He is doing this because he believes 300k bodies will win the war, this shows his increasing detatchment from reality.

The troops he is sending are felons, out of shape, questionable psychological evaluations, and mercenaries.

pass it on before this treasonous bill gets approved.

  14. Aaron G. Stock Says:

More pork on the table of minimum wage earners is something I can’t believe you wouldn’t support.

There’s only one mouth on a CEO.

  15. Patrick1 Says:

Why does Pelosi support Big Tuna over our troops?

  16. beefeater Says:

Do you suppose that the Democrat leadership is just treating you guys at TP and KOS and DUmmieland or Huffpo and MoveOver etc. like a crazy sibling in the attic?

    Reid: Who are these nuts?
Pelosi: Oh them, just the nutroots, nobody important.
    Reid: Do they vote?
Kennedy: Not enough of them to make a difference.
Clinton: Do they have any money?
Pelosi: Don’t think so, my staff reads their stuff, but all they seem to do is bitch.
Reid: Can we shut them up?
    Kennedy: Like Mary Jo?
Reid: No, I meant like that sister you had.
Kennedy: Rosemary? Ya, Dad had her fixed, I’ll look into it.

  17. Crump's Brother Says:

We need primary opponents for anyone that votes for this bill. It’s that simple. Then we need to push to get rid of Pelosi and Reid as leaders. They are obviously ineffective if they cannot carry out the will of 76% of the country, when going up against a Pres with a 30% approval rating. Let’s not forget freaking Rahm Emanuel. He must go.

    Never fear Patty1,

As a condition of our “surrender”, we’ll let the Iraqi’s (is that who we’re surrendering too?) move in with you and your mom to keep you from getting so scared when you’re alone.

Maybe you can finally join their “cause” and stop fearing that they’ll “git ya” cause you’ll be a fully converted Muslim! Oh darn, they do sometimes kill their own, don’t they?

    Oh well, FEAR-ON, little buddy!

I just sent off an email to my Senators and Congressman asking them (begging them?) to vote against the Iraq War Supplemental bill. And I told them that I am disgusted that the Democratic leadership (ooh - oxymoron!) that is sending this bill for a vote.

  23. Patrick1 Says:

Then why can’t the moonbats pass a surrender bill?

  24. Katie Says:

And the Democrats were afraid of political fallout if they continued to demand timelines. They were afraid of the fallout from the 30% who think that Iraq is a good idea. Why are they afraid of 30% of the people in this country, most of whom have an IQ of 70?

I am sick at heart at what our government has become, and this includes the Democrats.

Many of the pro-Israel congressmen already realize that unchecked spending has allowed Bush to fund al-qaeda in tripoli and are voting no.

You can get the numbers of the congressmen online via moveon.org.

Call them and the interns will escalate issues like increased immigration, moving the low class to poverty through the loophole in the minimum wage clause, and the HUGE THREAT TO ISRAEL’S EXISTENCE. Bush is even thinking of selling 300 million in arms to Lebenon to fight the al-qaeda in tripoli that he funded!

  28. Aaron G. Stock Says:

Keep it up, Patrick1, you’re doing great. Don’t ever back down. War on left-wing commenters forever!

And there is the bulk of your problem. An e-mail? E-mail? How many e-mail a day do you delete? If you want to end war and stuff you have to sing louder! (Alice)
Are Mike and Jeff out marching in the streets? If they were subject to a draft they would be. How about an online petition? That’ll show them. How about a post to a moonbat website, now that’s activism.

  31. rightard syndrome Says:

76% of the country are moonbats

  32. rightard syndrome Says:

10-20 rightards per day go out of their way to post multiple times at a worthless leftwing moonbat site. None of the 100’s of progressive left posters even think about going to a reichwing site to post or read.

  33. rightard syndrome Says:

democracy spreading rightards think 20 something % is a majority and communicating with ones elected representatives is a waste of time

  35. President Bush Says:

    Patrick1,

“If the poll is correct then the moonbats should be able to pass a surrender bill but admitted yesterday they couldn’t. Why?”

Because unfortunately, nearly 100% of elected Republicans, seem to be ignoring the will of their constituents, you moron.

  36. President Bush Says:

Which is exactly the way I like it. Hell I vetoed the stem cell research bill when 80% percent of the country likes that.

  37. RUCerious Says:

I wonder if certain pols aren’t wondering about their election probablity in 08. If they aren’t they should be.

  38. Aaron G. Stock Says:

    beefeater,

I largely agree with what you suggest, except the marching in the streets; that’s not particularly useful right now (big media won’t report it, Bush wouldn’t give a damn if 10 million people marched in Washington, etc.).

But at least mikeandjeffsmom is communicating with her (?) representatives. I don’t see much point in mocking an email.

Also, touché at #35, “President Bush”!

  39. gorn by any other name Says:

I like this term “moonbat”. It seems to have no meaning at all, a word not found in dictionaries but apparently invented by Robert Heinlein to describe the third stage of a multi-stage rocket. It appears to be an attempt at witty insult, but fails miserably as the root words “moon” and “bat” are not offensive, although the similar words “lunatic” and “batty” might have been effectively conjoined as “lunibatty” or “battylune”, this seems to have been beyond the intellectual tool chest of the crazed right wing zealots who have embraced the term.

Unfortunately for their cause, all the brilliant conjoined insults have already been appropriated for use against them. One of many examples is the well-known “f*cktard”, based on the root words of “f*cking” and “retard”, each of which perfectly describes the target audience, rendering the combination doubly accurate.

  40. CaptainMantastic Says:

A majority of Americans continue to support a timetable for withdrawal. Sixty-three percent say the United States should set a date for withdrawing troops from Iraq sometime in 2008.

Representatives in Congress, with more information about the conflict, disagree.

Patty, the Dem congress is not much better than the Repub one. They are all controlled by corporate interests. Jeez.

  43. Gene Glickman Says:

It’s all very well to come down heavy on the DEMOCRATS. They certainly deserve it. But we won’t make a ny progress until we apply our minds to figuring out WHY they’re so chicken.

They know the public sentiment. They don’t need a poll to tell them. Yet they always back down when the pressure’s on. WHY?

Could it have something to do with ties to the oil industry? Could it have something to do with ties to capitalism?

  44. Bluedog49 Says:

Gene: “But we won’t make a ny progress until we apply our minds to figuring out WHY they’re so chicken.”

There have been stories which indicate that Lieberman has threatened to turn Republican if Dems go too hard on the war. If Lieberman turned Republican, they would have the majority in the Senate, and all investigations would be shut down.

Here ya go! One guy protesting and it makes news at a moonbat website! You just know the SS won’t let Bush see this.

  46. alan benfield Says:

The democrats really dropped the ball on the Iraq war spending bill sent to the president. At the very least they could have bargined for a retraction of the tax bill that would have recindid the tax cuts for the top 2% of wage earners. They will never learn.

Comment by gorn by any other name — May 24, 2007 @ 3:18 pm

I like that term too. I use it to describe lefties for the very reason that it is meaningless. I find that when a person has to resort to foul language or sexual innuendo it many times indicates an intellectual deficiency. Like McCain. He showed himself to be nothing but an angry old man with his outburst.

  48. gorn by any other name Says:

“I use it to describe lefties for the very reason that it is meaningless.” - beefeater

It seems you find at least some meaning in what lefties say and do if you are going to all the bother to read and post on TP and to propagate terminology picked especially for them.

I therefore deduce that your rationalization for using the word is admirably inventive, but bogus.

The corollary is that if you really find no meaning to TP, the above should have been your final post here, because surely nobody with wisdom would waste their time posting on a site that is meaningless.

  49. Leftside Annie Says:

It’s really sad that a blithering buffoon like Lieberman can hold us all hostage.

However, there’s a downside for him: if he flips, he immediately loses all his seniority and goes to being the junior GOP senator from CT.

And frankly, I don’t think he’d be willing to give up all the goodies just to become a Republican.

  50. KEVIN SCHMIDT, STERLING VA Says:

There is only one way to end the war, now that the Dems have proven themselves to be no different than the enabling Republicans.

It is time for WE THE PEOPLE to exercise our Constitutional rights to assemble in Washington, D.C. and in particular in front of and around the White House, Congressional buildings, the Supreme Court and the Pentagon.

We have the right to indefinitely occupy our government buildings, shut them down, and order our representatives in the government and the military to end the illegal occupation in Iraq.

If we do not march on D.C. soon, then WE THE PEOPLE will own the war too!

This holiday weekend looks like a very good time to start our peaceful assembly and occupation to show them that they are not the boss of us, we are the boss of them!

  53. Martin J. Leahy, Ph.D. Says:

I just unsubscribed from the Deomcratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s e-mail distribution list. They sent a lipstick on a pig spin on today’s votes to fund Bush and about how the Democrats are at work on ending the war. Sure…

  54. Realist Says:

I attempted to read this poll in the original, and it seems that the Times has decided that it now links to a poll on the proposed immigration law. You guys might want to correct this.

  55. Doctor Zorba Says:

I wrote my Democratic senators, Stabinow and Levin, about their support for the occupation of Iraq and Bush’s plans to convert that nation into a permanent American military base.

The Iraq invasion and occupation gives aid and comfort to America’s enemies and has spawned world-wide hatred of our country. The consequences have been terrible, but likely, worse is to come.

Democratic treachery (re: Iraq Supplental Funding) will also have consequences, I hope. In Michigan, we need to start a netroots pledge drive to attract and fund our own Ned LaMont who will rid us of Levin in next year’s primary. For Stabenow, why not a recall? It worked in California.

  56. hterrya Says:

I sent the following message to Gov. Dean and the Democratic National Committee:

Imagine you are the Chair of the Rebublican National Committee (RNC) (DON’T ROLL YOUR EYES; DO IT!):

Now, imagine a major vote comes up in U.S. House of Representatives, and the Republican Majority Leader, the Chair of the Repulican Congressional Campaign Committee, and 84 additional Republicans vote with the Democratic minority, causing the Republicans to LOSE the vote,in SPITE of the fact that a large majority of the American citizens AGREED with the Republican side of the issue!

You can’t imagine it, can you?

    Unbelievable, isn’t it?

    NO IT’S NOT!

    IT JUST HAPPENED!

However, YOU are the Chair of the DEMOCRATIC National Committee!

The MAJOR vote was on H.R. 2206 and 86 DEMOCRATIC members of the House did what you couldn’t IMAGINE the Republicans doing! They VOTED WITH THE REPUBLICANS and APPROVED the Supplemental that keeps the occupation, the troop and non-combatant Iraqi deaths and casualties, and the destruction of Iraq GOING until September 30, 2007!

The Senate was WORSE! Only 14 Senators voted against H.R. 2206. THREE of them were REPUBLICANS, and ONE was an Independent who votes with the Democrats! The Democratic Majority Leader JOINED the Republicans!

NOW, what would the Chair of the RNC do to the offending Representatives and Senators of the Republican Party?

GO YE THEREFORE AND DO YE LIKEWISE!

    NOW!!

Here is WHO to do IT to:

    HOUSE

Democratic Representatives Altmire, Andrews, Baca, Baird, Barrow, Bean, Berkley, Berry, Bishop (GA), Boren, Boswell, Boucher, Boyd (FL), Boyda (KS), Butterfield, Cardoza, Carney, Chandler, Clyburn, Cooper, Costa, Cramer, Cuellar, Davis (CA), Lincoln Davis, Dicks, Dingell, Donnelly, Edwards, Ellsworth, Emanuel (Chair, DCCC), Etheridge, Giffords, Gillibrand, Gonzalez, Gordon, Gene Green, Herseth Sandlin, Hill, Hinojosa, Holden, Hoyer (Majority Leader!), Kagen, Kanjorski, Kildee, Kind, Lampson (The Hammer’s replacement, *gag*), Larsen (WA), Levin, Lipinski, Mahoney (FL), Marshall, Matheson, McIntyre, Meek (FL), Melancon, Mitchell, Mollohan, Moore (KS), Murtha, Ortiz, Peterson (MN), Pomeroy, Rahall, Reyes, Rodriguez, Ross, Ruppersberger, Salazar, Schwartz, Scott (GA), Sestak, Shuler, Skelton, Snyder, Space, Spratt, Stupak, Tanner, Taylor, Thompson (MS), Udall (CO), Visclosky, Walz (MN), Wasserman Schultz, and last, but not least, Wilson (OH).

    SENATE

Just thank Democratic Sens. Boxer*, Clinton, Dodd, Feingold*, Kennedy*, Kerry, Leahy*, Obama**, Whitehouse, and Wyden*. Then do to the REST of the Democratic Senators what you do to the Democratic Representative turncoats!

NOTE: You might want to thank Senator Sanders***, and the three Republicans****, too!

Of course, you don’t have to thank Sen. LIEberman for ANYTHING! {:-)

IF YOU GUYS AREN’T ANGRY ABOUT THE WAY THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY IS CARRYING OUT ITS RESPONSIBILITY TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, YOU MUST BE DEAD!!

    * These FIVE of the 14 voted AGAINST the invasion of Iraq.

** Senator Obama is on record OPPOSING the vote to invade, though not in the Senate at the time.

*** Sen. Sanders voted AGAINST the invasion while a member of the House.

**** If you think ANY of the Republicans opposed the invasion of Iraq, think again!

Gregory: You are completely, thorough LYING through your teeth, you ignorant troll!

Dennis Kucinich has been, “against the war since day zero….”, and UNLIKE Ron Paul, he has ALSO been steadfastly CORRECT on all the other issues important to Progressives!

UNDER THE BRIDGE, IGNORANT, NASTY TROLL!

  58. Talldave Says:

Yeah, I’m sure Americans are just begging to hand Iraq over to Al Qaeda. I guess that little nuance somehow didn’t make it into the poll question.

Of course we’d like to leave as soon as possible. We wanted to get out of every war as quickly as possible. The question is under what circumstances.
