U.S. is using ‘fear to distract from rights abuses.’

The United States is “the leading country using fear to justify the unjustifiable. The U.S. used to be in a position to speak out effectively against torture and military tribunals. We can’t do that now because we are carrying out some of the same practices,” said Larry Cox, the head of Amnesty International, which just issued its annual assessment of rights worldwide.

Bush Regime loves to promote Fear. It makes them warm inside their ice cold hearts > LOL.

  2. Katie says:

This is 100% correct. If the Iraqi’s are torturing the soldiers they have in their custody, what can we say about it? We no longer have any kind of moral authority from which to speak. That was the danger in ignoring the Geneva Conventions. If we torture, then other nations will feel free to torture our people.

How 30% of this country can still support George Bush is beyond me. Don’t they care about this country and our military? George Bush is destroying this once great country and doesn’t give a fig about our military.

  4. Jay Randal says:

Some press reports out of Iraq claim the bodies of 2 missing American soldiers were found with signs of torture and their heads smashed in. If this ends up true, then Bush Regime caused their deaths and the deaths of other soldiers who were forced to go looking for them.

  5. TripMaster Monkey says:

Damned straight. When we started torturing people, we lost the moral high ground, pure and simple.

And for what? Torture has never been a reliable means of extracting intelligence. Why, then would this administration voluntarily give up this nation’s position of moral leader?

Because torture is a very effective means of instilling terror, that’s why. This corrupt and criminal administration traded respect for fear…fear from both the citizens of the rest of the world, and from its own citizens.

This administration is a rabid dog that wears the foam of its disease proudly upon its muzzle. It’s made it perfectly clear that it will bite anyone, at anytime, just for the hell of it, and there’s nothing anyone can do to stop it.

The message is clear: stay the hell out of my way, and I might spare you.

This is what our government has become under the Chimpy junta. And as things progress, the rabid dog will get only more irrational and vicious.

The U.S. is losing and in many countries has already lost all credibility. History will prove that the Bush administration sped up the decline of the ‘American Empire’. The U.S. appears so desperate in its attempt at remaining a superpower, it is embarrassing. Political corruption, moral degeneration (primarily caused by those advocating the legislation of morals yet the worst offenders of moral corruption), an unjust, illegal war, an over-reaching near totalitarian leader… it all looks so desperate.

And, desperation is so unbecoming. Good luck.

  29. Saywho says:

This is not a “new” thing at all. This isn’t even a “Bush Thing” or “party thing”. What we are watching is a developing global population cull. The average person will not kill another equal unless his own mortality comes into question.

To kill in mass requires an enemy. This enemy does not have to be alive to be an enemy (like the war on drugs). Once we locate a suitable villain we then demonize him. This demonization changes this other person of flesh and blood into an animal that is much simpler to kill.

Regardless, the USA has always used torture, collusion, war and demonization to acheve its goals around the world while controlling the masses back at home with propaganda and FUD.

    http://drawn.ca/wordpress/wp-content/images/punchbelow.jpg
    http://drawn.ca/wordpress/wp-content/images/spotajap.jpg

Out in the open the military is showing us what “WE” will be expected to do with “TERRORISTS” in a short while when the time comes. Our animal instincts of fight or flight are being tapped or harnessed so that we will KILL the TERRORISTS or DIE.

Most people are so fed up with everything going crazy now, that deep down they wish they could go medieval on a demon or two before they perish. While our government appears to look like elected officials and the like; behind that lies the “MILITARY” and since the industrial revolution started the “MILITARY” has been running the entire show. We are just “SUBJECTS” of an enormous power that manipulates our basic instincts.

Ike alluded to the “Military Industrial Complex” and said we should, “Beware” of it. This was one of the boldest deceptions ever. This deception was the equivalent of the Devil convincing us that he didn’t even exist. We should set up a vigil and when the Military comes we will see it and stop it but the “MILITARY” was already in control.

Read some history books and see for yourself how this same situation has existed since at least WW1 till today. The same struggle by man for fleeting resources ending in massive population culls plays over and over like a skipping record. It is true that if we go back in time to other cultures and civilizations we will find that all wars are fought out over “RESOURCES”. WW1 started over OIL found in Mesopotamia and that location today is known as Iraq.

  30. Ken Wells says:

The United States was at one time the leader of the world in human rights. We liked to call ourselves the greatest nation in the world.

Oh, it’s true we stumbled along the way but we always moved ahead in a positive direction. We haven’t always lived up to the fullness of what our Constitution and Bill of Rights calls us, so there were bumps and sometimes giant ruts along our shared histories path that brought great trials and sometimes costs many lives. But America grew brick by brick laid by the tough hands of our forefathers and foremothers whose lifeblood flows throughout the heart of our land. History is full of the tales of their labored lives, hardships, troubles, and accomplishments. The dust of their bones will be desecrated if we take a wrecking ball to the foundation they set.

Now, because of a desire for power, secrecy and control among those in the Bush administration our nation has embraced a cancer of cruel suppression of the dignity of humanity. A sheepish fear among their followers, has allowed them to become mesmerized by a calculating group masquerading as trustworthy, giving the neoconservatives approval to disregard, as if it didn’t exist, the law and ethics of our nation. Acting as all cancers do if not removed it will grow and bring death to our democratic republic.

We our now facing our giant rut along the path, will we dishonor the legacy of those who stood so bravely on this land before us?

I think maybe you read the first line and stopped, thinking maybe I was a troll. Personally I felt I was guilty of stating the obvious to a progressive crowd. But I was misunderstood and that is my fault. All I was trying to say is that we have never lived up to what our constitution and Bill of Rights calls us but we, thanks to the liberals in our nation have slowly been making positive strides. It’s been a hard and difficult fight like struggling across a giant rut in the path. But thanks to progressives we have managed to move forward a little bit at a time.

But now because of 9/11 and fear of the boogie man from the Middle East we are willing to throw it all away and follow behind neocon fascists in order to make ourselves feel secure. All the gains our ancestors have made throughout the twentieth century in labor and human rights and the growth of the peace movement are being thrown away.

The conservatives and the squishy middle seem to just want to jump off the lemming’s cliff into totalitarianism.

  36. Ken Wells says:

this is what I think about these guys
    To the Red 25 – 30 percent

It seems your reluctance to “stand up” for freedom and righteousness within your own country and its policies is based on fear.
    .
The fear is understandable; to willing stand up against power, when all you want is security. As long as you can have your lifestyle and be comfortable in your homes and feel nice and safe until you die you’re willing to have ‘Big Brother’ take care of you from ‘cradle to grave’. ‘From cradle to grave’ your willing to sell out your children’s and grandchildren’s future liberty, national assets and climate in order ‘to keep things just the way they are’, to feel secure in your finances and lifestyle.
    .
You’re willing to give up freely what others, who came before you worked, suffered and died for. Why, because you’re afraid of the boogie man from the Middle East who has the strange religion and frightening ways. You’re willing to throw it all away because of fear mixed with a healthy dose of ignorance and a smattering of hate. No amount of evidence can convince you seriously misguided adherents of anything Bush that you are willing victims of propaganda and lies.
    .
You don’t realize you have foolishly surrendered your loyalty to a man. You’re too blind to see you are denying your faithfulness to what you so proudly proclaim as God and country. You are swept up by the passion of conflict and follow along aimlessly, duped into following because of your own voluntary ignorance and fear of going against what seems popular with your peers causing you to halt any questions you may have floating around in your conscience.
    .
Fear of the legitimate threat of terrorism is allowing you to be weak on protecting our most cherished gifts we possess as Americans; our freedoms as set forth in our constitution and its amendments. You’re allowing yourselves to be taken advantage of by those who would desire to see your freedoms lessened for their own lustful purposes.

Woe to those whose spirit compels them to speak against the flood of popular vengeance. The desire to strike back against a foe is so strong anyone trying to quell the rising tsunami of violence is flooded with anger, revulsion and distrust. The courage it takes to express legitimate descent is ignored as is their deep felt loyalty and patriotism. Throughout history their lot has been plagued with torture, exile and death.
    .
Everyone who interferes is perceived as being less than loyal and you’re willing to destroy them to keep yourselves feeling safe and secure. You call yourselves good and them bad. You use your abundance of possessions comfortable lifestyle versus their lack of anything, in the third world, as proof that you are most beloved by God; proof that you are doing everything God’s way; proof that God is on your side.
    .
You’re asking a small group of others to bare the burden of making you feel safe and secure. Your only contribution is to feign support by flying the flag in front of your home or placing the yellow ribbon on your car. When I see it there I wonder what’s truly in your head and whether you are only flying it because you have been possessed by extreme right wing nonsense willingly voiding your brain of any idea of what the flag really stands for. Our fathers and grandfathers fought under this flag in WWII defeating fascism in Europe. They were truly supported by sacrifices from everyone at home; industry included.
    .
This same flag is now being dirtied because it is being used as a banner for creeping fascism in our own country. They do not embrace Hitler’s, Mussolini’s, Franco’s, or anyone else’s version of fascism. They are playing with their own Neoconservative version. Future historians and political scientist may develop a better name but, for us, for now, fascism is accurate enough. It has been disaster in every country it has existed in and ours would be no exception. You people who have welcomed this filthy ideology have disgraced our flag, our forefather’s sacrifices and the very dust of their bones.
    .
You good Republicans need to develop the courage to see the truth because these monsters are destroying you from within and along with you they’re dragging the whole nation into disgrace. These are not your fathers Republicans they’re essentially fascists and devastation is their mistress.
    .
If you love your country, ‘Speak truth to power!’

Much clearer. And, I don’t disagree with your comments regarding fear being the primary motive of some who are willing to relinquish liberties for a ’sense’ of security and forcing their fear and policies on others.

A questionable comment is “All the gains our ancestors have made throughout the twentieth century in labor and human rights and the growth of the peace movement are being thrown away.” I think they have been progressively tossed since the end of WWII and the beginning of the Cold War.

I just question the strength of the strides we have made in labor, human rights and the growth of the peace movement. There were after all 5 major wars or ‘conflicts’ not to mention ‘peacekeeping’ missions, coup d’etats initiated by the CIA/U.S. (Guatemala 1980s, Chile 1970s, Panama 1980, to name only a very few) all which involved thousands of casualties at the hands of the U.S. Our peace movement has only been at the grass roots level and has never been endorsed by the U.S. government and has on several occasions been violently opposed by the U.S. government (read military and militarized police) (Kent State, Democratic National Convention, only to name a very very few). For the U.S. government and Republicans, War=Peace. Remember, you cannot simultaneous prepare for war and peace. But the U.S. believes that is how you arrive at peace.

    As for Labor:
    http://www.answers.com/topic/labor-union

There was more decline in support of labor by our government and by the public (working class) primarily beginning in the 1980s.

there are a couple of things that I feel the need to go over.

Fascism is an authoritarian political ideology (generally tied to a mass movement) that considers individual and other societal interests inferior to the needs of the state, and seeks to forge a type of national unity, usually based on ethnic, religious, cultural, or racial attributes. Various scholars attribute different characteristics to fascism, but the following elements are usually seen as its integral parts: nationalism, authoritarianism, militarism, corporatism, collectivism, totalitarianism, anti-communism, and opposition to economic and political liberalism.[1][2][3]

Liberals despise the Individual . the put the State ahead of the Individual because they believe that Government makes this country great not the Individual.
You have no use for God in Public , yet you try to Unite all under the banner of your Religion , Liberalism and its Culture .

Nazi The first thing that the Nazis did was take over the Media and Nationalize industry . who is it that wants to Nationalize the Healthcare industry ? who is it that runs ABC , NBC , CBS , MSNBC , CNN , Headline News , The New York Times ect. ect. that have a strong liberal tilt ? Who is it that shuts down any Conservative Speaker on a College Campus ,calling what they do Freedom of Speach ? Liberals. Who is it that wants to shut down Conservative Talk Radio ? Liberals because they cannot compete in a Fair and open market , remember AIRAMERICA ? They Tried .
So the next time that you find yourself looking in a mirror call yourself a Fascist and a Nazi and remember if Conservatives were Nazis You Liberals would be Soap and Lampshades.

You want to speak truth to power correct? What truth is it that you believe?

Creation? Evolution? The chicken or the egg?

Don’t you realize that under all of the garb fight or flight determines everything. Your premise is that individuality leads to freedom however in practice it only leads to anarchy and extinction. Groups are stronger than individuals and like prehistoric man we will lay down our individuality and ideals since individuality relies on ample resources.

We are nothing more than animals preying on a meal never knowing what meal is our last. During cull periods group-think and violence become tools to thin the herds. Frankly, being all bunched up with millions of other people turns me off. Many of you smell!

  47. Ken Wells says:

Every morning on CSPAN the continuing mantra of ‘we have to fight them there so we don’t have to fight them here’ is constantly echoed.
Just exactly who do they believe ‘them’ to be? They would respond, “The enemy”. Which would beg the question, “Who is the enemy?” At this point the adherents of anything Bush get off-beat strange.

From the most ignorant and frightening ‘the only good Muslim is a dead Muslim crowd’ you would get an answer of Arab or Muslim because ‘they hate our way of life and freedom’. From another group just as ignorant but a little less hateful you would get an essentially correct response of terrorists although many of these people would fit nicely into the previous group.

In the case of Iraq a response of terrorism means all the people fighting placed under one umbrella. Sadly terror is a tactical choice employed by all the varying factions but there seems to be a complete disconnect when it comes to understanding the varying factions and their motivations.
    .
    What is a terrorist
    http://www.peacetakescourage.com/terrorist.html
    .
Al Qaeda is responsible for their share of the violence but it’s a relatively small percentage of the overall violence. The great enemy in Iraq is the power lust of the few (Kurd, Sunni, Shiite and the battles within each of those varying factions), along with the hate driven desire for revenge carrying fear and ignorance as its allies. So many people are suffering an incredibly insidious hell of a tortuous death. It’s shocking how exceedingly cruel people can be once they see the others as less than human. The hate that exists is growing even stronger in an environment where fear and revenge has become the master.

All sides want us out; they believe its okay to kill our men and women and they are all going after us with great relish. Our troops are stuck in the middle of a brutal civil war where all sides are shooting at them and the enemy can not be easily discerned, if at all. They do not belong in the middle of this and it’s a illicit misuse of the military to expect them to.

War crimes were committed. Bush policies of rendition, torture, indiscriminate use of weapons improper among civilian populations, seriously overused troops in a deadly supercharged environment, profiteering, and negligent planning wrapped up in a refusal to admit any mistakes have made Bush Neoconservative’s opponents of peace toward the US and Iraq and the people of the region if the instability spreads. Those in charge are to blame for this mess because they’re the ones that put the horror in motion. Neocon policies have become the best recruiting tools for Al Qaeda and like-minded groups. Money has been wasted, misused and stolen causing us to rely on China and other nations to finance our illegitimate occupation while keeping the lifestyles of the powerful undisturbed. They’ve left the brunt of domestic sacrifice for this war of lies to be carried by the military families with little support from the Republican chicken hawks who so frequently love to envelop themselves with flags, yellow ribbons and military paraphernalia.

They also screwed the Afghanistan people and our troops who were fighting the terrorists who really did attack our country on 9/11 by running away from the ‘war on terror’ hijacking it for neoconservative desires. The Taliban is regaining strength in Afghanistan. Osama Bin Laden is still free and in charge of Al Qaeda which is gaining strength and free reign in western Pakistan and throughout northern and western Africa. We can’t do anything to curtail their growth because we are bogged down in Iraq while seriously running down the morale and readiness of our military.

Our continuing occupation of Iraq is harming us while allowing Al Qaeda to grow in organization, strength and territory.

If our presence in Iraq is futile or more destructive to them and us than our absence then we must leave.

  48. Saywho says:

Define harm based on the bigger picture being extinction. In other words killing for oil is no different than killing for land or killing for passage. None of this is new. Don’t you realize that our survival depends on fight or flight? Since there is no place to escape to then all that is left is to kill them before they kill you! Simple!

“If we are going to commit American troops, we must be certain they have a clear mission, an achievable goal and an exit strategy.”
Karen Hughes, speaking for candidate George W. Bush

“You think Vietnam was bad? Vietnam is nothing next to Kosovo.”
    Tony Snow

“You can support the troops but not the president”
    Representative Tom Delay

“Bombing a sovereign nation for ill-defined reasons with vague objectives undermines the American stature in the world. The international respect and trust for America has diminished every time we casually let the bombs fly.”
    Representative Tom Delay

“I cannot support a failed foreign policy. History teaches us that it is often easier to make war than peace. This administration is just learning that lesson right now. The President began this mission with very vague objectives and lots of unanswered questions. A month later, these questions are still unanswered. There are no clarifiedrules of engagement. There is no timetable. There is no legitimate definition of victory. There is no contingency plan for mission creep. There is no clear funding program. There is no agenda to bolster our overextended military. There is no explanation defining what vital national interests are at stake. There was no strategic plan for war when the President started this thing, and there still is no plan today”
    Representative Tom Delay

“My job as majority leader is be supportive of our troops, try to have input as decisions are made and to look at those decisions after they’re made … not to march in lock step with everything the president decides to do.”
    Senator Trent Lott

“Explain to the mothers and fathers of American servicemen that may come home in body bags why their son or daughter have to give up their life?”
    Sean Hannity

“No goal, no objective, not until we have those things and a compelling case is made, then I say, back out of it, because innocent people are going to die for nothing. That’s why I’m against it.”
    Sean Hannity

“Explain to the mothers and fathers of American servicemen that may come home in body bags why their son or daughter have to give up their life?”
    Sean Hannity

“These international war criminals were led by Gen. Wesley Clark …who clicked his shiny heels for the commander-in-grief, Bill Clinton.”

Neocons and their cohorts are fascists
“See, in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda.”
    George W. Bush

Through clever and constant application of propaganda, people can be made to see paradise as hell, and also the other way around to consider the most wretched sort of life as paradise. ”
    Adolp HItler

“Fascism should more appropriately be called Corporatism because it is a merger of State and corporate power.”
    Benito Mussolini

“We stand for the maintenance of private property… We shall protect free enterprise as the most expedient, or rather the sole possible economic order.”
    Adolph Hitler

“The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to the point where it becomes stronger than the democratic state itself. That in its essence is fascism – ownership of government by an individual, by a group or any controlling private power. ”
    President Franklin Delano Roosevelt

    They are fascist.

From the very beginning of the Bush administration they began to marry corporate goals with administration goals. It started with the secretive energy meetings conducted by Cheney. The Bush administration accommodates their needs over that of America in most every instance. They place cronies, many of whom are unqualified, into positions of importance who end up catering to corporate interests over that of the American people. The no bid Halliburton contracts are a prime example. Neocons desire to rid the country of responsible government regulation of business and urgently needed social programs that they feel might interfere with their conservative vision of the way they would like to see business conducted. They believe those programs they are willing to let survive should be placed into private hands (the ownership society). They don’t just want to unravel everything positive that FDR did for our nation they want to destroy progressive advancements back to the time of Teddy Roosevelt.

Propaganda assails us all day long. The AM radio is dominated by extreme right wing viewpoints spewing pro-administration talking points and distortions across the dial twenty four hours a day. They also have the Fox news network along with many local stations affiliated with all the other networks, The Mooney owned Washington Times along with many other newspapers and publications. Multiple media outlets are owned in each city thanks to FCC deregulation. The other television network outlets are under the ownership of large profit centered corporations who have generated timid news crews. Courageous, independent and honest media sources are becoming harder to find in this country and those that do exist are constantly assailed.

Dissenting voices are considered wrong, portrayed as un-American, traitorous, or evil. Anyone who is not like them is not to be respected or trusted and they are routinely attacked, ridiculed and dehumanized. They advance hate for Muslims, liberals, the United Nations, any country that criticizes the neoconservative agenda and all those who fall outside their twisted moral view of society. Orwellian double speak, lies, half-truths, and distortions are their tools of choice. Anyone or group who disagrees with or contradicts the administration or its allies and benefactors are trashed mercilessly.

The neoconservatives are gifted at what I call ‘misdirection’. Just like what magicians do to distract an audience’s attention. It’s used most often when there is news or some other event they would like to draw our attention away from. Most often the device they chose is terror alerts or some threat of terrorism. They bring out some old report and present it as new, give partial information presented in the most threatening manner or completely fabricate the threat. The lapdog corporate media dutifully covers the administration tale ignoring what it was meant to hide. Sometimes the misdirection is as simple as an attack on a political enemy or policy such as gay marriage or some other conservative hot button issue.

Political rallies where only people who sign a loyalty oath are allowed to attend. The people run a gauntlet of security to make sure no dissenters of any kind manage to slip inside to see who are supposed to be the leaders of everyone in the country. If you’re curious or just want to see your president or other top administration officials and hear them speak; you’re not getting in without the right papers. Many other rallies are attended only by the military on their turf, listening to a civilian president decked out in military garb. These events are highly orchestrated to sway the emotions while presenting an attractive stage for television news going about the business of providing colorful sound bites for a gullible public. Their propaganda is meant to control opinion in their favor by distorting and hiding the truth. It’s in their interests the Neoconservative Bush administration is operating, not the United States.

People, including US citizens, can be locked up without charge, only suspicion is necessary, indefinitely with no access to counsel, the Red Cross or human rights groups. Anyone who looks Middle Eastern is targeted as a possible terrorist and deserves intense scrutiny and possible indefinite detention. Immigrants to our country including children can be held indefinitely without charge.

Habeas corpus, posse comitatus and personal privacy have been thrown on the ash heap. Our homes, mail, medical records, the books we borrow from the library, the web sites we visit, and the groups we associate with are all subject to secret FBI or Homeland Security snooping without legitimate judicial review.

Elections have become guarded events with suspicious activities such as purging voting rolls or having too few polling places forcing lines many hours long in predominately black districts or intimating a threat of arrest. Why, because they most often vote democratic.

We’re allowing ourselves to be taken advantage of by those who would desire to see our freedoms lessened for their own lustful purposes. They believe they are allowed, they have good reasons, and that domestic or international law does not apply to them.
