While President Bush has been busy politically demagoging funding for the troops, CBS Evening News highlighted a disturbing report tonight that the administration waited over a year before acting on a “priority 1 urgent” request to send blast-resistant vehicles to Iraq, the so-called Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles.
Calling it “an outrageous delay,” CBS noted, “The Marines in the field asked for 1,200 MRAPs in February 2005 — but so far, they’ve received less than 100.” The report also noted that the problem is widespread and systemic:
A Marine Corps document obtained by the Associated Press says that of 100 requests for critical gear sent in last year, less than 10 have been filled. It blames red tape and the failure of bureaucrats to take risks.
“Unnecessary delays cause … deaths and injuries,” the document says — and nowhere is it more true than with MRAP.
Watch it:
For American troops in Iraq, the heavy-duty armored vehicle has proven to be a life-saver. As a testament to MRAP’s effectiveness, top Marine commander Gen. James Conway said recently, “We have yet to have a Marine killed in the al Anbar Province who is riding inside an MRAP.” He added, “How do you not see it as a moral imperative to get as many of those vehicles to theater as rapidly as you can?”
As AmericaBlog noted, the Marine Corps lied about why it had failed to fulfill the urgent request for the priority equipment, claiming it was not “a budgetary decision” when internal documents prove that it was.
In an open letter to President Bush, Sen. Joseph Biden (D-DE) urged the administration to publicly make MRAP production a national priority. He wrote, “How is it possible that with our nation at war, with more than 130,000 Americans in danger, with roadside bombs destroying a growing number of lives and limbs, we were so slow to act to protect our troops? … We need to know how and why this happened so that it does not happen again.”
At least 1,419 U.S. soldiers have been killed by roadside bombs in Iraq.

There’s ALWAYS a certain amount of collateral damage…
…especially in a Walmart War…
May 25th, 2007 at 8:31 pmAs I remarked earlier, given the military’s actual role in Iraq (sacrificial lambs), this expenditure is unnecessary.
Chimpy doesn’t give a damn about the troops. In fact, from all appearances, it looks like he’s doing his best to render our armed forces permanently dysfunctional. Given the additional fact that Blackwater, a mercenary outfit that answers only to whoever signs their paychecks, is waiting in the wings, this is troubling indeed.
May 25th, 2007 at 8:34 pmso much for supporting the troops mr. decider guy.
it is just so demoralizing to know that no one is ever going to arrest mr. decider guy for treason!

May 25th, 2007 at 8:53 pm” […] top Marine commander Gen. James Conway said recently, “We have yet to have a Marine killed in the al Anbar Province who is riding inside an MRAP.â€
And therein lies the dog, buried. He says nothing about those who rode inside the MRAPs and were *injured*, perhaps maimed for life.
Whereas the cost of a dead Marine is a one time expediture of: pinebox, flag and a flight home, the cost of a badly injured one is years and years of hospital and psychiatric care. And our Repubes are Conservatives. Fiscal conservatives in particular. Especially when the money could be better spent on lining one’s own pockets with bribe money from special interests (like military contractors), why waste it on post-op care?

hey trollscum why aren’t you claiming that it’s cbs’ fault because they’re hurting troop morale by telling them that bush doesn’t care about them.
May 25th, 2007 at 8:58 pmHey! You go to war with the army you have not the army you wish you had or the army you might have at a later time. Ho Ho Ho!
Now I’m off ordering a few more B-2 “Golden Bomber”, a few F-22 “Anti-Far-Future-Chinese-Ownage-Machines” and a couple of those new-generation SSNs, can’t be too careful…
May 25th, 2007 at 9:00 pm.5% pay raise and armored vehicles are reasonable requests for soldiers in the middle of a civil war that are being blown to pieces by improvised explosives.
May 25th, 2007 at 9:00 pmBush’s had a rubber-stamp Republican Congress which gave Him every thing He asked for. Now He’s got a Rubber-stamp Democratic Congress doing the same thing.
But the bottom line is, if you serve in the armed forces out of a sense of patriotism and love of country, you are expendable, and not worth a great deal to the President, except as political fodder.
If, on the other hand, you go to Iraq because of a love of money and work as a mercenary under a cost-plus no-bid contract, then the more that is spent, the more the Corporation profits.
Our troops, our women and men in uniform, are nothing more than a blood sacrifice so that Corporations can enjoy a bountiful harvest.

Amazing how Elizabeth, outstanding representative of conservative values, can crush Rosie without stepping down into the gutter with Rosie. Rosie, who is fat, foul-mouthed and disgusting, was side-by-side with a beautiful, pregnant, heterosexual woman, so Rosie could not win that fight of opposing images.

May 25th, 2007 at 9:30 pmNot to mention the MRAPS were already funded, yet, there’s no product. For that matter, How many B-2’s or F-22’s have been seen at once? How many are combat ready? How many are paper airplanes? And how much paper armor?
Could this be the result of imaginative bookkeeping? Could they be stranded in the limbo that has swallowed untold billions of “missing” dollars? Or, equally disturbing, have we lost the will, and capability, to produce things in a hurry?
May 25th, 2007 at 9:32 pmtotaly there, man, like, far out….
May 25th, 2007 at 9:32 pmAnd the Bush Administration supports our troops. The Democrats caved because they were afraid the Republics would paint them as no supporting the troops. But, with ammunition like this, Walter Reed, and many other scandals regarding the troops, I really don’t know why the Democrats were worried. With the poll numbers the way they are, all the Democrats needed to do was to say consistently, “we support the troops, we are going to bring them home to safety”.
There is no reason for our men and women to die to occupy a country that doesn’t want us there. I’m almost wanting the Iraqi Parliament to sign the darn oil giveaway so that we can get our people out of there. That’s the only reason why we are still there. The day the oil bill is signed in the US’ oil companies favor, the draw-down of our troops will start. I think that this bill is immoral and that we have no right to steal Iraq’s oil. But if the Iraqi’s sign it and we can bring our people home, the Iraqi’s can then nationalize the oil fields and kick out the foreigners. Then they will get what they want and we will get what we want.

the excuse is always “support the troops”. which of us, with any ability to reason, doesn’t understand that it is impossible for the best and most highly funded military in the entire world to abandon the troops? americans would crawl and swim to bring back the troops if necessary.
just how much more arrogant and insulting can the US occupation government in washington be? the very worst thing though, is that, chimpylips’ puppetmaster karl “heil ME” rove is getting away with this!

There’s a good reason our armed forces don’t have MRAPs.
They cost money.
A lot of money.
Money that Blackwater and other “security contractors” are getting, because of their salaries, which are 4 and 5 times what US servicemen earn.
Money that Blackwater etc. gets for being hunkered down in the Green Zone, protecting politicians, generals, and bureaucrats.
The mercenaries don’t go out on patrols.
And besides what the MRAPS cost, they still get blown up and destroyed.
May 25th, 2007 at 9:44 pmThe men inside may survive with their lives, and only “nominal injuries”, but the MRAP is toast.
The bureaucrats and the Pentagon brass don’t want to send brand new toys over to be immediately destroyed.
Rumsfeld went to war with the old, obsolete, and barely roadworthy armaments and transportation.
With the express purpose of burning it up and blowing it out.
So that he could put in an order for all new stuff.
This insurgency was not part of his plan.

Rosie is just starting to learn, and like a little kid wants to tell the world. What’s so funny is that most 9/11 truthers are not liberal. They are conservatives, hell one is running for president…Ron Paul. You idiots went after him and it back fired didn’t it. He is more prominent and getting more airtime then he even ever imagined. Now he’s getting big money backers as well. What Rosie said is mild compared to what conservatives Jerome Corsey, Jack McLamb, hell the Birchers came out with much more condemnation, then Rosie even understands. Slam Rosie all you want and try and frame the movement as a “Liberal Thing”, because there’s where you will fail. The Libertarians, Idependents, constitutionalist, conservatives, blue dog democrats, republicans see this more then 9/11. They see the push to make this free country a dictatorship. What you fail to understand is that people are not buying the lies anymore. When someone says something they actually are going out and researching the facts. May 25th, 2007 at 10:05 pmComment by Jason M. Hendler — Here’s somemore Hendliar:
Ron Paul Fears Controlling Cabal Will Use Staged Terror Attacks
Warning America About The New World Order
When Ron Paul told a packed TV studio and the watching world that “They attack us because we attack them over there” he was making an extremely cogent and informed point about US foreign policy on more than one level.
Though it is clear Ron Paul was undermining the fallacy the American people have been sold in the shape of the “war on terror”, Paul was also repeating an assertion he has made many times before that the agenda of those in the White House now is a systematic continuation of aggression abroad as well as an exploitation of its fallout in order to push for total authoritarian global control.
While the media has attempted to spin his words and acuse him of saying Americans are to blame for being hated, Paul was actually making it clear that it is the policy of the US government that is to blame and that has continued to stimulate hatred, sometimes even for its own gain.
In his famed Neoconned speech a few years ago for example, Paul outlined the fact that the self-proclaimed neo-conservatives are not conservative and there is nothing new about the disgraceful philosophy to which they adhere. Their philosophy of endless war and big government really finds its roots in Machiavelli’s obsession with the “greatness of the state†along with Trotsky’s belief in “permanent revolution.â€
Paul has warned of a new world order based on this philosophy many times.

“But if the Iraqi’s sign it and we can bring our people home, the Iraqi’s can then nationalize the oil fields and kick out the foreigners. Then they will get what they want and we will get what we want.”
Hi Kate,
While I agree with your sentiments and frustrations, this part of your post is simply wrong in my view. Your thought that oil alone is the reason for our troops being in Iraq is way too simple. It really involves the PNAC vision of the neo-cons to control all of the Middle East. If BushCo had succeeded in Iraq we would now be fighting in Iran. It is about the neo-con domino theory that one nation after the other would start collapsing after we secured a “peaceful and content, democratic ” Iraq. They called it the “Arc Of Instability.”
The goal was and still is (also known as Plan A) to control the whole Middle East and the vast energy resourses there. With this control the US would control and dominate the whole world while being omnipotent. And this is why Condi said that Plan B is to make Plan A work. (Or words to that effect.)
If you start with their goal in mind, everything that appears to us as stupid, callous, extravagant, short sighted, arrogant or any other explanation you choose, all fit neatly into their ideology. That ideology is that “The ends justifies the means.” Do anything to achieve Empire, no matter the cost even if it looks, or is, stupid or arrogant etc. etc.
Take our soldiers dying for instance. They are dying for “the cause” and their lives are therefore not being “wasted” (as we think). Their sacrifice is for PAX Americana and more than worth the loss. Simply a neo-con form of “collateral damage” to reaching the Empire they believe in. That the soldiers (”the means”) are coming home in body bags and wheelchairs is minor to the goal of Empire, so that’s the way it goes. No problem for them. Death and suffering? Hey, it’s just part of the price you pay…
May 25th, 2007 at 10:21 pmNO need for the vehicle if the Iraq Fiasco War is ended and the troops returned home to America. It’s time for Senators like Biden to get his lazy butt over to Iraq to fight or shut up.

May 25th, 2007 at 10:46 pmMerlin, great post. I agree.
Having military bases near Iran is threat to China, OTAN wanting to establish bases in Ukraine is a threat to Russia. It is a plan to control the resources of that part of the world, which is really dumb if you are a truly Empire visionary cuz oil wont last more than 80 years at this consumption rate and then you will have to depend on coal, which US has a lot. Russia has the largest Natural Gas reservoirs in the world, followed by Iran and former Soviet Countries, but I dont think they plan to attack Russia…come on, we all know US strikes the little ones.

Katie’s premise is bogus and a big part of the problem - ‘nothing is more important to the american people (than) protecting our troops.’
That might be true if they cancelled American Idol but I doubt the American people really have the time to care about them with all the TV they need to get through in a day.
May 26th, 2007 at 11:28 amDespite having the advantage of overwhelming support from the American people for their ideas and “efforts” to end this war, the Democrats are about to lose all of their momentum and, despite facing off against nine mongoloids and one mildly rational Libertarian, may just lose the election. Why? I think the reason is well illustrated in this comment thread. Many of you, just like your counterparts in government, have allowed an incoherent blow-hard and a fervent bigot shape the direction of this discussion.
There is absolutely no defense, especially considering that we’ve opened an unlimited line of credit for this war with the 1st Bank of China, for not immediately retooling as many auto plants as necessary to shoot out as many MRAP vehicles as our military has requested within 120 days at the most. Then, or preferably simultaneously, we should also be producing tens of thousands of batches of interceptor body armor, and whatever other life-saving equipment our military is requesting. These soldiers are being forced into harm’s way for no reason whatsoever. With that in mind, there is no excuse for not giving the soldiers every single thing they need to execute this ridiculous military plan so that they can, hopefully, come home in one piece. Now, I’m not saying we should get rid of all this antiquated, non-armored equipment. Heck, Bush, Cheney and McCain need something in which to be transported when they make their surprise visits to Baghdad…
So, back to my original point - knowing that there is no argument that supports the Bush administration on this topic (and most others), the jerk-offs who still feel they need to defend an indefensible position (hey, they learned it from their GOP counterparts in office), change the topic completely and bait their naive Democratic/Liberal counterparts to respond to a comment that warrants no response.
So, losers…get a clue - stay focused, stay on topic and let Rosie stay loud and fat if that’s what it takes to make your unified voice heard by the elected officials who can, and should, do something about the myriad atrocities that are the Iraq War.
May 26th, 2007 at 12:51 pmYes, blame Bush for manufacturing delays. Oh, and in the same vein, I blame George Bush personally for the production delays of Nintendo Wii, leading many, many people across the world to have to wait months to get their Wii. Clearly Bush should nationalize the military industry and reset all assembly lines in the country to manufacture MRAPs. Hell, if Hitler can do it, why can’t Bush? After all, aren’t they basically the same?

Have the best posts on this thread IMO…
So, let’s see…off the top of one’s head:
1. Lack of MRAP production
2. Walter Reed debacle
3. Dragonskin controversy
4. The adiminstration will not accept an additional .5% raise for “the troops” while up-ends of 20% of military families need WIC.
5. “Backdoor” drafts and tour extensions with inadequate time at
home.
6. A total of 280,000+ troops (yes 280,000!!!…when you count US troops and Blackwater)….Blackwater….is this not the quintessence of Eisenhower’s woes regarding the Military-Industrial Complex?
When faced with these facts/instances, any logical person (democrat or republican) is forced to contend that this administration is either incompetent, nefarious, or both
…..But not your “Delta House” Neocons…So drunk on the kool-aid. First, they suckle on the titte [sp] of Sean and Rush, then they follow each other in around like lemmings marching over a cliff…blaming everyone but themselves and their king….
George W Bush….not the “Hoover” or “Otter” of Delta House….but “Flounder”….cause boy has he ever.
All hail King George the Flounder….”Commander Decider guy” of the Delta House Neocons

May 26th, 2007 at 4:56 pmI did face reality, and the reality is that manufacturing delays are not the realm of the president of the country, unless that president decides to be like Hitler and usurp control over private enterprises for the cause of utilizing them for war.
You know, because I’m sure you’d be fine with the president just taking over private businesses in the country to use them for war. I’m sure you and Think Progress wouldn’t have any problems with that at all…. Snark.

May 26th, 2007 at 10:07 pmAs a child, I lived WWII. I remember the mobilization. The US was shipping mobile radar vans to England just 3 months after Pearl Harbor. The magnetrons that made that possible had arrived at MIT in 1940, but were experimental curiosities up until 12/07/41. Over 2000 vans were shipped to Great Britain by the following Spring. What has happened to the industry that made our nation as great as it is?
Why has our resolve faded? Who is to blame?
My #70,

Thank you Biden for continuing to fight for our soldiers.
May 28th, 2007 at 3:18 pmThis issue is strictly a USMC issue, not a republican or administration issue. If there were mistakes made, which is not yet totally clear, they were USMC mistakes. I know firsthand that the USMC is taking the allegations seriously and they are looking into it. To make the leap and place the blame on a political party or the current administration is foolish and ignorant.
