Crowd laughs as former U.S. attorney slams Gonzales.

Yesterday, former U.S. attorney Thomas Heffelfinger lightheartedly criticized Kyle Samspon and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales for saying they considered firing him because Heffelfinger had no “federal prosecution experience” prior to taking the job as U.S. attorney in Minnesota. “When Tom Heffelfinger ‘took the job,’ he already had served as U.S. attorney once before.”

Among the least surprising developments arising from Monica Goodling’s appearance before the House Judiciary Committee was the reflexive use of the “criminalization of politics” defense. Not by the witness, that is, but by Republican members of the committee themselves. That is to be expected. After all, whether the scandal involves Tom Delay, the outing of Valerie Plame, Jack Abramoff, or the U.S. attorneys purge, we can always count on the GOP to recast its rampant criminality as mere political disagreement.

    “Politicizing Crime.”

Of course McKay can’t explain why the prosecuters were fired. **Because the real reason they were fired is that they faithfully executed their jobs by ignoring Karl Rove’s insistence that the pursue demonstrably baseless charges of voter fraud.

Maybe I am just a simple minded hick, but don’t US attorneys serve at the pleasure of the POTUS? Where is the crime ? There is nothing here but a political witch hunt! Hi Zooey! I missed you. This is Sean.

The crime comes into effect, if any of the attorneys were fired because of pursuing legal investigations into the activities of certain Republicans, which does seem to be the case in a few instances here.

Then it becomes obstruction of justice.

  13. JPV says:

And yes… you ARE indeed simple minded.

  14. Bluedog49 says:

Nothing wrong with being a simple-minded hick, but “serving at the pleasure of the POTUS” doesn’t include breaking laws. Goodling’s testimony yesterday certainly leads one to believe that failure to commit election fraud was a reason for being fired. We already know that prosecuting a republican was a reason to be fired, so charges of Obstruction of Justice are in play. So, there’s two federal crimes for you — election fraud and obstruction of justice. I’m pretty sure there will be quite a few more. For example, Alberto broke federal law by divulging classified material to Ashcroft in his hospital room while his wife was present. I know, I know, it’s a small matter, but you conservatives are such sticklers for The Rule of Law, that I know it’s important to you.

  15. Robert says:

    simple-minded,

What Bush/Rove/Gonzales did with the attorney is wrong. And I’ll say the same thing if President Hillary Clinton or President Obama or President Gore politicizes the DOJ too. You of course, will have to STFU since you see nothing wrong with it.
