Fitzgerald: Libby deserves 2-3 years in prison.

“Former White House aide I. Lewis ‘Scooter’ Libby betrayed the public’s trust and deserves to spend 2 1/2 to 3 years in prison for obstructing the CIA leak investigation, Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald said Friday.”

“Particularly in a case such as this, where Mr. Libby was a high-ranking government official whose falsehoods were central to issues in a significant criminal investigation, it is important that this court impose a sentence that accurately reflects the value the judicial system places on truth-telling in criminal investigations,” Fitzgerald wrote in court documents.

U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton has broad discretion over Libby’s fate. Walton faces two important questions: whether to send Libby to prison and, if so, whether to delay the sentence until his appeals have run out.

Libby’s lawyers have not filed their sentencing documents yet but are expected to ask that he receive no jail time.

UPDATE: Christy Hardin Smith has much more.

pretty good recommendation from fitzgerald considering his investigation into treason was corrupted by the AG, DOJ, OVP, POTUS, the media and the USA program in general. are we to imagine that he didn’t receive phone calls and meetings like the other USA’s did? he has a lot to say, and no one appears to be asking.

wonder if anyone will hire him to continue his investigation. isn’t it strange that he isn’t continuing?

Hang him to give the rest of the thugs in the crime family of view of what they are faced with for all their corruption.

What a difference 30 years makes. During the Watergate scandal, it was Republican staff attorney Fred Thompson who famously asked “are you aware of the installation of any listening devices in the Oval Office of the President?” Now, likely GOP presidential candidate Fred Thompson is a charter member of the Scooter Libby Legal Defense Trust.

For the sad story of another Republican who no longer believes in “law and order,” see:

How long he does is less important than where does his time. Bush will pardon him anyway. Hopefully he does time in Marion and “accidentally” falls on a shiv on the way to dinner.

  35. Jackie says:

The White House might give Libby gold star for service well done. Monica explained how the DOJ works. Fitzgerald followed the law and the jury found Libby guilty but it’s all Fitzgerald’s fault for not following the Bush policy of not charging GOP criminals. Should be interesting to see how Judge Walton handles this as Wells tried to pay him for a fool. Yes Libby the great lawyer did his best to trick the Judge as he knew Cheney and Rove weren’t going to testifiy in the trial. Let’s hope the GOP friends of Libby visit him in jail as other friends like Abramoff and Duke are forgotten or said now no one knows them. After Monica passes the Bar maybe she will be able to appear in court legally.

  36. Robert says:

Treason can and has been punished by death.

libby’s behavior before the Grand Jury stopped a federal investigation into a case of high treason, permitting those responsible to continue doing whatever it was they were doing behind closed doors for additional years.

Yeah, he deserves a couple of years for perjury and obstruction of justice, but I agree with the early comment that he deserves to hang for his treason and the betrayal of his oath of office.

All these scumbags in the bush administration are engaged in making war upon the People of the United States. They all deserve prison sentences of life with no parole.

How about one of the Libby jurors asking for a pardon?

He wasn’t charged with treason, and thus is not guilty of committing treason, regardless of how much the left wants him dead.

Odd, I thought most of you guys were anti-death penalty. Well, at least you are when it comes to child molestors or axe murderers.

  49. Con10tious says:

Amazing! Let me say it slowly for those of you who don’t comprehend the situtation.

There was no crime becasue Ms. Plame was not a covert agent.

Fitzpatrick should have quit as soon as he understood that and he didn’t. Regardless, the good news is President Bush will pardon Libby anyway!!!!

  50. midori says:

Let me it slowly for those who can only regurgitate neo-con talking points. Ms. Plame was a COVERT agent until she was outed by Robert No-facts and the Bush administration. A crime was committed, and your repeated attempts at denial and spin won’t change that. Sorry.

  51. Jackie says:

Interesting comments. For those who believe the Attorney General is correct in not charging Republicans who committ crimes and as Monica said lawyers hired had to follow the Bush policy of Law. I understand why your against Fitzgerald for the rules of the land set by the Constitution. Libby did what he had to do to protect his boss and the President. He was willing to lie under oath as a good soldier to the Republican party. As Kyle Sampson said Fitzgeralds name was considered for firing. Fitzgerald took an oath to up hold the United States system of Justice and he wasn’t willing to committ the crime of fixing cases for the White House. Plame was a covert agent working in Iran to find out if Iran was making nukes. As the White House leaked her name all the covert operation was destroyed. Libby will have to see how grateful the White House is for his loyality. Yes Bush can pardon Libby for all past, present and future crimes as was done with President Richard Milhouse Nixon. At this point Gonzales is blocked from firing Fitzgerald. The United States had the model Legal System until George W. Bush took office. Now we have an Attorney General is doesn’t know the law or is ill with selective memory lost. Monica right out of college put in a job to make sure only loyal Republican lawyers are hired. Monica even said one lawyer who was fired didn’t have experience yet he was a former Attorney General of his State. If Bush/Cheney don’t forget who Libby is like they’ve done with other loyal GOP followers. Maybe Libby will get that pardon I know Abramoff and Duke wish Bush had helped them out.
At lease Fingers Foley wont be charged with molesting kids while he held office and that’s the way it should be. GOP and friends can committ crimes, molest kids and steal without being charged with a crime. That’s the new Legal System set up by the White House.
