I guess they are counting the stories that CNN and MSNBC just make up.

  2. Republicans are the Fear and Smear Party Says:

Why would Faux “News” even be in an “Excellence in Journalism” poll?

  3. watershed Says:

Pay no attention to that war behind the curtain! The great FOX has spoken!

  4. Patrick1 Says:

Anna Nicole is more important than the Iraq war. Stupid libs..everyone knows that.

    Shocking

  6. Patrick1 Says:

I believe Fox did a story on the Al Qaeda torture manual. Did MSNBC?

The U.S. military is conducting a propaganda campaign to magnify the role of the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq, according to internal military documents and officers familiar with the program. The effort has raised his profile in a way that some military intelligence officials believe may have overstated his importance and helped the Bush administration tie the war to the organization responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001 , attacks.

  12. DRxJ Says:

    But wait!
Of those three networks, which one uses the constant scrolling of terror alert level the most?

  13. Jake in DK Says:

Seriously, ‘Percent of Newshole’? Please journo commenters - tell me what this means.

  14. Kay Says:

How come on the FBI’s website : 9/11 is not mentioned with regard to him?

  15. Kay Says:

    him as in OBL (oops)

  16. Clyde the Ripper Says:

Fox doesn’t know what they are missing.

It is a wonderful life when we are allowed to be part of it.

Early morning coffee and Granny on a sunlit patio: even DUHbya’s sparrow would be welcome and the Repug papers don’t seem nearly so impotent.

    Good Morning to you all!

There, there, Li’l Patty, I know it’s tough coming to grips w/ the fact that if you watch Fox Noise, you’re basically an uneducated fool easily manipulated by gaudy graphics and false “facts”.

  18. Oversight is a Bitch. Says:

Looks like Fox News is embarrassed by the debacle in Iraq. Such an overt display of the Bush Administration’s incompetence obviously makes Fox cringe. COWARDS.

  19. nwyman Says:

given the fact that Fox TV broadcasts complete trash most of the time, is it any surprise that it leaks into their News broadcasts as well?

“next on FOX, ‘When Anna Nicole Smith ATTACKS!’

  20. margaret Says:

We’ve had a rash of posters complaining about non-news items making it onto this site.

Does this item fit that bill?

You can be sure that if it suits the current administration FOX will be right there spreading the fear-mongering when deemed advantageous.

  21. Heterodoxy Says:

#12 Newshole is the percent of the program dedicated to X. Used to combine different time slots and lengths (1/2 hour vs. hour).

  22. the republic of stupidity Says:

I believe Fox did a story on the Al Qaeda torture manual. Did MSNBC?

    Comment by Patrick1

Why doesn’t Fox do one on the BushCo torture manual, why they’re at it? Oh wait, that would be the RNC handbook.

(Psst, Patty, you forgot to wear your white hood this morning :-)

Good morning, Clyde & Granny! How are you feeling?

  28. Jake in DK Says:

Sorry I’m not ranting here, but does the graph header ‘Percent of Newshole Devoted Three Major Stories on Cable TV’ not raise an eyebrow or two? Or are newsholes a common phenomenon which, like assholes, we don’t talk about in polite company?

  29. pgw Says:

    1 minute + google =
“A newshole is the amount of print-space or air-time available to report the news.”

  30. Jake in DK Says:

Props to J Swift for noticing this intriguing yet repulsive reference ;-)

  31. Jake in DK Says:

That’ll teach me to rely on wikipedia and dictionary.com. Smackdown accepted. Still interesting that journalists refer to the time/space available as a ‘hole’.

  32. Patrick1 Says:

I don’t think they should count the stories used by CNN that come from their Al Qaeda stringers.

  33. Clyde the Ripper Says:

Always best to be past a surgery like that, Clyde. I’m so happy you’re alright.
    Um, minor procedure…?

  35. Roger_Roger Says:

We need only look at the TV ratings to see which station is doing the best job for its shareholders and owners.

  36. Clyde the Ripper Says:

The by-pass was the fourth in a series of four in seven days, two on each side of a heart attack. You are right! At that point in time clipping my toe nails would have been major!

  37. Hits Says:

Again, what’s the point? Is Fox news answerable to Think Progress or to some moral compass on Iraq? I believe they will prosper or falter depending on how their viewers take them up. And the last I checked, they are doing pretty good. So, maybe the socialist moralistic agenda doesn’t apply here. Try some place else - Venezuela, maybe?

  38. Keith Says:

I’d also like to see a percentage of how much time they devote to Rosie O’Donnell. I watch FN quite a lot, and this week alone, they have spent HOURS covering O’Donnell v. Hasselbeck. I would be shocked if even ABC has aired more of O’Donnell than FN has.

  39. Zooey Says:

The by-pass was the fourth in a series of four in seven days, two on each side of a heart attack. You are right! At that point in time clipping my toe nails would have been major!
    Comment by Clyde the Ripper

Aw geez, Clyde. I’m so glad you’re ok. Granny must have been worried sick.

  40. Tara Says:

Patrick1, the so-called “al-Qaeda Torture Manual” was created by Rumsfeld’s Pentagon. It’s an old propaganda tactic called “disinformation.”

  41. Patrick1 Says:

Tara: It is hard to believe that Al Qaeda would torture anyone, religion of peace and all.

  42. Patrick1 Says:

The link was to The Smoking Gun, which reported:

In a recent raid on an al-Qaeda safe house in Iraq, U.S. military officials recovered an assortment of crude drawings depicting torture methods like “blowtorch to the skin” and “eye removal.” Along with the images, which you’ll find on the following pages, soldiers seized various torture implements, like meat cleavers, whips, and wire cutters.

    What was Amnesty International’s reaction?

    cricket chirp

Yet Amesty International just 3 days ago called for the US to close Guantanamo Bay.

Where did USA Today play the torture book story?

    Not on Page One.

Where did the New York Times play it?

    Not on Page One.

Where did the Washington Post play it?

    Not on Page One.

And yet such false stories as the “flushed Koran” got widespread play in the newspapers and on television.

We are hearing those awful “Sounds of Silence” that Simon and Garfunkel warned us about.

Whether intentional or not, the message is clear: The United States must be above even false reports of torture, while the enemy is allowed to promote eye removal, blowtorching skin and horrors I won’t go into.

The handbook shows that the enemy really is perverted and that its “cause” has less to do with global politics or any religion; they are sickos who like to torture people.

As much as I admire and respect John McCain’s war service, he is wrong when he says our interrogation methods encourage the enemy to torture our people. The enemy was torturing and beheading people well before 9/11.

That this does not disturb so many newspaper editors is in itself disturbing.

  43. Flaco Says:

    Good point Patrick

  44. triz Says:

    Patrick:

OH NOEZ, al qaeda has a torture book! somehow that doesn’t strike me as news. they probably also have some kalashnikovs and some RPGs. and i bet they’ve done some research into dirty bombs. WHERE IS FOX ON THE AL QAEDA OWNS A ROCKET LAUNCHER STORY???

what IS news, however, is that BUSH HAS TURNED THE USA INTO A STATE THAT TORTURES PRISONERS. that is news that needs to be repeated as often as possible, because EVERY REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE SAVE MCCAIN AND PAUL ARE PRO-MF-ing-TORTURE!

  45. Flaco Says:

CNN & MSNBC suppress and censor and manipulate the news,
then for entertainment they show Keith Olbermann.

  46. triz Says:

i think, Flaco, that foxnews is the one on the defensive here… iraq war is obviously the biggest story for our nation right now. why are they burying it? and yes, olbermann’s a clown. unfortunately he’s got more than one counterpart on fox…

  47. Patrick1 Says:

    Writes Wretchard:

The problem with the word “torture” is that it has been so artfully corrupted by some commentators that we now find ourselves at a loss to describe the kinds of activities that the al-Qaeda interrogation manual graphically recommends. Now that the term “torture” has been put in one-to-one correspondence with such admittedly unpleasant activities as punching, sleep deprivation, a handkerchief pulled over one’s face and loaded with water, searches by women upon sensitive Islamic men or the disrespectful handling of Korans — what on earth do we call gouging people’s eyes out?
Answer: we call it nothing. My fearless prediction is that not a single human rights organization will seriously take the matter up. There will be no demonstrations against these barbaric practices, often inflicted upon Muslims by other Muslims, in any of the capitals of the world. Not a single committee in the United Nations will be convened nor will any functionary in the European Union lose so much as a night’s sleep over it. The word for these activities — whatever we choose to call it — will not be spoken.

  48. Sean Says:

    How is Olbermann a clown?

    MSNBC ftw.

  49. Patrick1 Says:

You mean other than thinking he is Edward R. Murrow?

  50. Vinnie Says:

    Patrick1,

Did you ever consider that maybe Al Qaeda wrote that torture manual in response to the fact that we tortured people in Abu Ghraib? Maybe, like the Iranians, they just want to have and use the same weapons that we have and use. That’s the whole point of the torture thing - the US can no longer take the high ground here. We are doing the same as them.

  51. Patrick1 Says:

No because they were torturing people before Iraq or 9/11 for that matter. Have you ever considered that they wrote that manual because they are evil barbarian butchers of a perveted cult?

And to say that we are “doing the same as them” makes you out to be a fool.

  52. clamflats Says:

Patrick - your reference to Sounds of Silence is apt

“and the people bowed and prayed - to the neon gods they made”

    Kill your TV.

  53. Flaco Says:

TP is a perfect example of selective news stories. The have wild catchy headlines with each story. One sided views, slanted, out of context, you name it they do it here at TP.

Lets see more news from the Middle East, Iran in particular. Got nukes?
You would think Iran’s mullahs threatining the world with nukes would get the moonbats here in a frenzy. Nah because it is too hard to believe they would do anything that destructive.

    Death to America!

  54. Flaco Says:

How come everything is Islam is a felony (beheading, stoning, burn alive)?

    Does Isasham have any misdemeanors?

  55. David Tomlin Says:

    Patrick1:

I guess they are counting the stories that CNN and MSNBC just make up.

I’m surprised anyone is defending Fox on this point. I’d think the hawks would be upset that Fox isn’t covering more of the ‘good news’ that the rest of the media is suppressing.

  56. Karim Says:

The False News Channel has never been fair and balanced.
