Patrick1:

I guess they are counting the stories that CNN and MSNBC just make up.

I'm surprised anyone is defending Fox on this point. I'd think the hawks would be upset that Fox isn't covering more of the 'good news' that the rest of the media is suppressing.

TP is a perfect example of selective news stories. The have wild catchy headlines with each story. One sided views, slanted, out of context, you name it they do it here at TP.

Lets see more news from the Middle East, Iran in particular. Got nukes?
You would think Iran's mullahs threatining the world with nukes would get the moonbats here in a frenzy. Nah because it is too hard to believe they would do anything that destructive.

Death to America!

No because they were torturing people before Iraq or 9/11 for that matter. Have you ever considered that they wrote that manual because they are evil barbarian butchers of a perveted cult?

And to say that we are "doing the same as them" makes you out to be a fool.

Patrick1,

Did you ever consider that maybe Al Qaeda wrote that torture manual in response to the fact that we tortured people in Abu Ghraib? Maybe, like the Iranians, they just want to have and use the same weapons that we have and use. That's the whole point of the torture thing - the US can no longer take the high ground here. We are doing the same as them.

Writes Wretchard:

The problem with the word "torture" is that it has been so artfully corrupted by some commentators that we now find ourselves at a loss to describe the kinds of activities that the al-Qaeda interrogation manual graphically recommends. Now that the term "torture" has been put in one-to-one correspondence with such admittedly unpleasant activities as punching, sleep deprivation, a handkerchief pulled over one's face and loaded with water, searches by women upon sensitive Islamic men or the disrespectful handling of Korans -- what on earth do we call gouging people's eyes out?
Answer: we call it nothing. My fearless prediction is that not a single human rights organization will seriously take the matter up. There will be no demonstrations against these barbaric practices, often inflicted upon Muslims by other Muslims, in any of the capitals of the world. Not a single committee in the United Nations will be convened nor will any functionary in the European Union lose so much as a night's sleep over it. The word for these activities -- whatever we choose to call it -- will not be spoken.

OH NOEZ, al qaeda has a torture book! somehow that doesn't strike me as news. they probably also have some kalashnikovs and some RPGs. and i bet they've done some research into dirty bombs. WHERE IS FOX ON THE AL QAEDA OWNS A ROCKET LAUNCHER STORY???

what IS news, however, is that BUSH HAS TURNED THE USA INTO A STATE THAT TORTURES PRISONERS. that is news that needs to be repeated as often as possible, because EVERY REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE SAVE MCCAIN AND PAUL ARE PRO-MF-ing-TORTURE!

The link was to The Smoking Gun, which reported:

In a recent raid on an al-Qaeda safe house in Iraq, U.S. military officials recovered an assortment of crude drawings depicting torture methods like “blowtorch to the skin” and “eye removal.” Along with the images, which you’ll find on the following pages, soldiers seized various torture implements, like meat cleavers, whips, and wire cutters.

What was Amnesty International’s reaction?

cricket chirp

Yet Amesty International just 3 days ago called for the US to close Guantanamo Bay.

Where did USA Today play the torture book story?

Not on Page One.

Where did the New York Times play it?

Not on Page One.

Where did the Washington Post play it?

Not on Page One.

And yet such false stories as the “flushed Koran” got widespread play in the newspapers and on television.

We are hearing those awful “Sounds of Silence” that Simon and Garfunkel warned us about.

Whether intentional or not, the message is clear: The United States must be above even false reports of torture, while the enemy is allowed to promote eye removal, blowtorching skin and horrors I won’t go into.

The handbook shows that the enemy really is perverted and that its “cause” has less to do with global politics or any religion; they are sickos who like to torture people.

As much as I admire and respect John McCain’s war service, he is wrong when he says our interrogation methods encourage the enemy to torture our people. The enemy was torturing and beheading people well before 9/11.

That this does not disturb so many newspaper editors is in itself disturbing.

Patrick1, the so-called "al-Qaeda Torture Manual" was created by Rumsfeld's Pentagon. It's an old propaganda tactic called "disinformation."

The by-pass was the fourth in a series of four in seven days, two on each side of a heart attack. You are right! At that point in time clipping my toe nails would have been major!

Aw geez, Clyde. I'm so glad you're ok. Granny must have been worried sick.

I'd also like to see a percentage of how much time they devote to Rosie O'Donnell. I watch FN quite a lot, and this week alone, they have spent HOURS covering O'Donnell v. Hasselbeck. I would be shocked if even ABC has aired more of O'Donnell than FN has.

Again, what's the point? Is Fox news answerable to Think Progress or to some moral compass on Iraq? I believe they will prosper or falter depending on how their viewers take them up. And the last I checked, they are doing pretty good. So, maybe the socialist moralistic agenda doesn't apply here. Try some place else - Venezuela, maybe?
