“The United States is preparing to reject new targets on climate change at a Group of Eight summit next month, dashing German and British hopes for a new global pact on carbon emissions.” German Chancellor Angela Merkel has sought to “win agreements for a global reduction in emissions of 50 percent below 1990 levels by 2050 and bold commitments to energy efficiency strategies.”
UPDATE: The Guardian adds:
Despite Tony Blair’s declaration on Thursday that Washington would sign up to “at least the beginnings” of action to cut carbon emissions, a note attached to a draft document circulated by Germany says the US is “fundamentally opposed” to the proposals.
The note, written in red ink, says the deal “runs counter to our overall position and crosses multiple ‘red lines’ in terms of what we simply cannot agree to”.
UPDATE II: Meteor Blades has a wrap-up.
Sorry World,
Of course we cannot, and will not, give up our lifestyle, convenience, and most of all our massive oil company profits, simply to make human survival on this planet possible for people who are not us.
May 26th, 2007 at 11:20 amMerkel is such a worthless hag, because she should have punched Bush when he grabbed her by the neck several months ago.
May 26th, 2007 at 11:30 amLet’s be clear about this. The “US” is not opposed to the climate change proposals. The Bush Administration is. The Bush Administration is not “teh US” even if it is the “US Government” for 18 more months.
May 26th, 2007 at 12:21 pmnumber 3, face it: the American people voted Bush into power – twice. The Bush government is your official representative in the world.
May 26th, 2007 at 12:45 pmZooey,
You forgot Hummers. We in the U.S. have a God-given RIGHT to drive Hummers.
May 26th, 2007 at 12:46 pmCheney even said something like our lifestyle (profligate wasting of energy) was not negotiable. Americans do feel that they have the right to drive large vehicles all they want. They talk tough but don’t realize the ones they need to be explaining this to our their children. They need to tell them they care more about their current enjoyment than the state of the planet that we’ll be leaving them.

Half of all voters did NOT vote for Bush, and we don’t want him as our official representative in the world. Hell, I don’t want him as dog catcher in his hometown! He’d probably torture them.
This action by the U.S. government, once again, underlines how Bush lies and lies to us all. Remember the 2007 State of the Union address? Oh yeah…and several before then. These are OIL people. If they are willing to kill hundreds of thousands of people to control access to oil in the Middle East, does anyone actually believe that they want to develop alternate fuel sources?

The elections in 2000 and 2004 were stolen.
May 26th, 2007 at 2:19 pmThe scene is set for a showdown between the US and other G8 countries who want early action on climate change.
Germany’s environment minister, Sigmar Gabriel, said the country was prepared to block decisions on other issues unless the US and other G8 members made concessions on the environment.
“America doesn’t want to commit to firm goals. We can’t put the global future of our children at risk because of the narrow-mindedness of individual negotiating partners.”
Maybe a showdown will appeal to Bushco’s faux-cowboy persona.

July 2005
Speaking to British broadcaster ITV, Bush said he would instead be talking to fellow leaders about new technologies as a way of tackling global warming.
But he conceded that the issue was one “we’ve got to deal with” and said human activity was “to some extent” to blame.
He said the US was investing in developing clean energy techniques such as sequestration of carbon dioxide in underground wells, hydrogen-powered cars and zero emission power stations.
One of Mr Bush’s main domestic critics on global warming, Senator John McCain, called the president’s approach on the issue “disgraceful”.
“I’m not quite sure how you’ll bridge the gap,” he told the BBC’s Today programme
G8 – Britain, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Russia and the US

Meanwhile, over on the other side of the pond…the 27 EU members have agreed to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent by 2020.

I certainly can’t, no. Maybe the envirowackos should take up the lead and give up their lifestyle instead.
May 27th, 2007 at 12:45 amIt’s a funny thing…
Lefties want conservation (namely, they want someone else to conserve energy so they can use their private jets and heated pools).
Lefties also want low gas prices, which discourages conservation.
Hmm…..
