“A suicide car bomber struck a busy Baghdad commercial district Monday, killing at least 21 people, setting vehicles on fire and damaging a nearby Sunni shrine, police and hospital officials said. … Insurgents carried out several mortar and car bombing attacks throughout the capital Monday and even waged a lengthy gunbattle with police in broad daylight. The wave of violence, which killed 36 people across Baghdad, came despite a nearly 15-week-old U.S.-led security crackdown in the city.”
Oh hell yeah, things are working out great in Baghdad! By the time we’re finished securing the city, we could be up to a million dead Iraqis!

It is really hard to defend you as an intelligent poster with sh*t like that.
May 29th, 2007 at 12:24 amI can’t even begin to imagine how it must feel to live in Baghdad these days. I have no experience with that level of insecurity. I go to the grocery, I go to work, I go home, and it never crosses my mind that any one of those places could mean I was blown up, or my friends and co-workers were blown up. Death does not intrude on my life the way it does in Baghdad. Why should I get to go to sleep tonight without the fear that pervades Iraq?
May 29th, 2007 at 12:30 amgummitch > one press story about Iraq still makes me cringe: A young Iraqi guy told his sister he would go get them both an icecream cone from down the street. When he was at the icecream shop a car-bomb exploded burning him over his entire body. His hands were so badly burned they had to be amputated. He will never be able to hold an icecream cone again. I cried when I saw the picture of him.

the chymp is 0 for 2 on this. He’s bound our next generation with the debt used to bind the Iraqis to this nightmare.

Sounds like sectarian violence to me.

You said this. Whats bigger senseless loss of life by your definition? 200 deads per day? How many more is needed in order for you or others to understand that the surge is not intended to stabilize anything but to keep violence rates up? Oh, I know, Im a looney conspiracist…yet, thats the evidence. Surge is not working. People deciding surges know this, know that the level of violence will stay up as long as an invading foreign force remains in place.

Obvious more troops alone is not enough, there has to be a well thought out plan to put in effect (which I do not claim to have knowledge of when it comes to Iraq). But there has been violence in Iraq for years, before the US invaded. Under Saddam shit was relatively calm because he was a dictator, now that he is gone so is the paralizing effect he had over the Iraqi people. I truly believe that if we were not there, some second rate Saddam-wannabe would sieze the country through massive violence and murder.

I dont really know how the mind of US citizens work, but it seems that you have incorporated Manifest Destiny from the milk of your mothers (sorry, if it sounds too aggressive). Why do you think you have the right to decide what is best for other people, other culture? What God came down and give you that right? Who told you that? Let me put it real simple: If you dont want anyone messing with you, dont f*ck around with other countries.
Saddam was a brutal dictator put by the CIA in the first place. He lifted the living standards of Iraqis in ways that no other arab countries could follow. He kept a tight grip over population, no doubt, but it is funny that no one was willing to die in order to depose him…now, several thousands of people are willing to die to kill Sunnis or Shiites or the invading forces. That really tells you something about the states of things over there.
Iraq will be ruled by another tyrant, no doubt, but you wonder, as anyone of the trolls here, if that tyrant will serve the interests of the US or not. Thats probably the most henious line of thinking I have ever listened. All that kind of people care about is about them…f*ck what Iraqis think or other people, it is about WHAT TURNS OUT TO BE OF OUR CONVENIENCE. You think a 5,000 y/o civilization can be taught about the way they need to live. They will figure it out, as they have done all these years, let them alone and stop selling weapons to war lords and tyrants…that will help a lot.

May 29th, 2007 at 1:35 am“but it is funny that no one was willing to die in order to depose him…”
From what I recall he had his enemies taken out Stalin-style, that was one of the reasons that eventually no one stood in his way.
“You think a 5,000 y/o civilization can be taught about the way they need to live.”
I feel the same way.
But if we were to leave now, and there was a genocide, or massive killing all at once, then Americans would feel guilty (and rightly so), for that reason, I believe, that we are over there to put off that guilt as long as possible. I don’t know about any secret oil deals or any thing like that. I just think that Bush is in over his head and that he can not walk away because then he would feel personally responsible for what ever takes place when we leave.

May 29th, 2007 at 1:41 amBush never takes responsibility for anything, so if we stay or leave and thousands die it makes no difference to him. May 29th, 2007 at 1:45 amMr. President > Bush Junior has a character flaw: he never takes responsibility for anything. His parents must have let him get away with everything. His dad should have spanked the crap out of him as a child, instead of allowing him to lie about everything.

I posted two comments about it earlier today at another progressive site and was instantly banned without warning, the site monitor said it was a bunch of conspiracy crap.
Anyone else concerned about the NAU and why aren’t progressive sites covering this?
May 29th, 2007 at 2:11 amMr. President > Bush knew the intelligence he was given on Iraq was concocted crap. The British have a memo stating the intell was fixed. Bush acts naive for the press, but he had the intell cooked up for Iraq to justify invading and occupying that country.

May 29th, 2007 at 2:13 amFester > NAU is being promulgated, but we the people are not supposed to know about it. I have to go to bed, otherwise I would chat with you about it.
May 29th, 2007 at 2:15 amOh, O.K., so you WERE lying about being a President. Good to know.
May 29th, 2007 at 2:20 amI just think that Bush is in over his head and that he can not walk away because then he would feel personally responsible for what ever takes place when we leave.
I’m not sure you should be deciding what Bush would and would not feel in that scenario. You may be entitled to your personal opinion but you can’t know what Bush feels. I personally think Bush has suffered a psychotic snap. That is not a generalization, like saying he’s gone “crazy”, a word which has no real bearing in mental health issues. It is a specific medical condition.
Listen to his tone of voice, look at the body language and gestures, or at his eyes. The man is no longer here.
May 29th, 2007 at 2:30 am“Bush is solely responsible for the carnage and mayhem in Iraq.”
And don’t forget the traitors who voted twice for The Worst President Everâ„¢.
May 29th, 2007 at 6:37 amAll Bush is trying to do is hang on in order to pass this hell he has created to the next President to “lose.” Bush never intended to “win” any war in Iraq, he only wanted to use “the war on terror” to divide America and make it a campaign slogan.

May 29th, 2007 at 9:24 amRe Tobey @ 48: yeah, but to these zipperheads, Iraqi lives don’t count. To them, they should bow down before the Christian horde and supplicate themselves, or face the wrath of Jesus Hisself.
As for the lives of the GIs, well, they don’t seem to count for much either to these madmen: they seem to make comparisons to WWII and Nam and stake the claim that the numbers are so low as to not matter. As for the tens of thousands horribly maimed or suffering from mental illness, well, we’ll just send them to Walter Reed to rot.
How many more have to die so the oil we paid dearly in both blood in treasure can be sold back to us at astronomical prices? How many children of Exxon/Mobil and Chevron executives are in Iraq today?
