In his first interview since announcing his resignation, World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz blamed the media for his downfall and claimed he had been vindicated over ethics accusations.
“I’m pleased that finally the board did accept that I acted in good faith and acted ethically,” Wolfowitz told BBC News. He neglected to mention that the World Bank board’s statement that Wolfowitz acted ethically was simply a “face-saving deal,” and that the special panel formed to investigate Wolfowitz’s actions found that he “broke bank rules in arranging a hefty compensation package for his girlfriend,” causing a “crisis in the leadership” at the institution.
Wolfowitz says he resigned because “emotions here were so overheated that I don’t think I could have accomplished what I wanted to accomplish for the people I really care about.” He denied that “lingering personal antipathy against him had contributed to his decision to leave. ‘I think it tells us more about the media than about the bank and I’ll leave it at that.’”
Watch it:
Funny. I thought the media protected his sorry ass all the way down.
May 28th, 2007 at 2:01 pmDenial is a horrible thing to have to witness.
May 28th, 2007 at 2:06 pmThis assclown dug himself a nice deep hole, practically jumped in it, and he’s wondering why people are shoveling dirt on him.
Well, it is kind of true. No formal charges were ever brought up, so he’s vindicated.
May 28th, 2007 at 2:09 pmLMFAO! The Bushies dogma of personal responsibility and accountablility applies to everyone but themselves. When they are caught red-handed, it it the fault of a) Democratic smears, b) the liberal press, c) Al-Quaida, d) Bill Clinton, e) Hillary Clinton, f) anyone but themselves.
May 28th, 2007 at 2:09 pmSpoken like a true megalomaniac.

May 28th, 2007 at 2:28 pmAs with all the crimes committed by the White House blame anyone else.
May 28th, 2007 at 2:29 pmWolfie has to believe that it was the media that made him give his girl friend the big bucks. Oh yes Wolfie was a loyal Bushie as he illegally invaded Iraq and stole Saddam’s 900 billion dollars. Hastert got his share flown in by the military right to his second home. Yes that’s why Fingers Foley could molest the kids for so long and as other GOP officials keep quiet. Money buys loyality ask Chris Matthews and David Brooks who are on the White House payroll.
Charges will only be brought against him when/if we can get some regime change.
May 28th, 2007 at 2:30 pmHe sounds just as foolish as when Bush says “we’re fighting them over there so we don’t have to fight them here”.

May 28th, 2007 at 2:38 pmHow do guys like Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, and Perle get to be in positions of power? When peope make mistakes like theirs in the real world, they get fired. When these guys make mistakes in Bush-world, soldiers die.

I have to say, I agree.
May 28th, 2007 at 2:51 pmhe should be well paid up at his psychotherapist to make statements like that.
May 28th, 2007 at 2:53 pmIf the media was against Wolfowitz they would have brought up the fact thet he is a signatory to the “Rebuilding America’s Defenses” document drawn up by PNAC, which calls for a “new Pearl Harbor”
May 28th, 2007 at 3:05 pmSpudge_Boy
This whole report has me kind of feeling left out.
I mean, I work for the media. The website to the second biggest paper in South Africa, and the best regarded. If we were waging war on someone the least my fellow coworkers could have done was forward me the memo.

If the press really is responsible, I’ll drink to freedom of the press. It works again.
May 28th, 2007 at 4:13 pmMr. Wolfowitz is just another worthless lying traitorous war criminal, a charter member of the Bush crime family.
May 28th, 2007 at 4:16 pmIt is someone else’s fault…

LOL !!!
May 28th, 2007 at 4:17 pmAlways a victim. Blaming the press is so pre-9/11.
May 28th, 2007 at 4:17 pmIf you were as ugly as Wolfie, you would have to promise a lover more money as well…go grief. Blame it on the media has worked for the Republican party for thirty years, but, give me a feaking break. FAUX NOISE has debunked that myth and nobody with a brain cell would believe Wolfie at this point.
Why can’t these thugs of the Crime Family take responsibility for their actions?
May 28th, 2007 at 4:30 pmWell let’s see.
Wolfowitz asked the Ethics Committee to deal with the conflict of interest of his girlfriend working at the bank. The Ethics Committee told him, newly on the job, to deal with it himself.
Wolfowitz then dealt with it himself, something he should never have had to do especially since he was new to the job, and had the head of human resources place his girlfriend at the State Department. Her salary was increased to the level she would have gotten if she had stayed on at the bank, since she was up for promotion.
The Ethics Committee then checked with Wolfowitz if he had resolved the matter, he said he had, and then said fine.
A half year later, an anonymous “whistle blower” claimed to the Ethics Committee that Wolfowitz had acted improperly. The Ethics Committee investigated, and wrote Wolfowitz a letter February 28th telling him that they had looked into it and found that he had done nothing wrong.
Then over a year later, some how the Ethics Committee completely reverse their opinion after media leaks, and suddenly Wolfowitz did something wrong after all – directly contradicting what they told him a year earlier.
Yeah. I can’t understand why Wolfowitz would blame the media at all………..
May 28th, 2007 at 4:47 pmWolfoshitz is a War Criminal. Just one of the Bush Crime Cabal Family.

May 28th, 2007 at 5:25 pmWolfie brought cronyism and incompetence with him to the World Bank. He was driven out by outraged World Bank employees, not “the media.” What a load of tosh.

May 28th, 2007 at 6:21 pmYeah, it’s always the media’s fault isn’t? The media FORCED him to hire his girlfriend and to be abusive to his fellow workers, didn’t they?
He sure didn’t seem to mind the media when the gave him, and his fellow neocons, a free pass during the run-up to the war, now did he.
These folks are just reprehensible.
May 28th, 2007 at 6:23 pmYeah. I can’t understand why Wolfowitz would blame the media at all………..

Here’s an idea CreamCatcher, when somebody hands you a really cush job based not on your qualifications but on your personal affiliations and your not sure if behavior is ethical, maybe you should just say NO. People make decisions every day so that their jobs aren’t compromised. It is not somebody else’s fault when you make a poor decision, not for Wolfie or anybody else.

Yes it appears to be a full time job. And since congress has other things to take care of maybe special prosecutors need to cover some of the load. Janet Reno appointed Ken Starr of investigate Clinton’s horrendous crime against the state. But since Gonzo needs to be investigated isn’t there somebody else to name special prosecutors? Or is this the reason Gonzo NEEDS to be impeached, so that somebody will take his job and name dozens of them to cover all the violations.

May 28th, 2007 at 7:06 pmThe World Bank needed a regime change, Wolfie! Be thankful we didn’t hang you. Now slither off into obscurity and leave us humans alone.
May 28th, 2007 at 7:15 pmDon’t let the door hit you on the ass on the way out!
Hecka of a job, Wolfoshitz!
May 28th, 2007 at 7:45 pmWonder if his wife and girlfriend read these posts?
May 28th, 2007 at 7:58 pmWonder if they have the same opinions?
Wonder who he’s going to sue?
Gee, Paul, “emotions were overheated.”
Ya’ think?
That’s what happens when you game the system to benefit you and yours. People get pissed when they know they’re getting ripped off. You, my dear assnugget, are a self-righteous, pompus, intellectual light-weight who costs society much more than you are worth. You are a welfare queen. You are also a world-class troublemaker and criminal. And you wonder why people are emotional.
Ya’ freekin’ git.
May 28th, 2007 at 8:37 pmApparently Wolfowitz cannot read. The Bank’s Board accepted that he believed that he had acted in good faith, not that he actually did act in good faith. Also, their investigation report, published just a few days before the “face-saving deal” found him guilty of conflict of interest, violating his contract, lying and being a poor manager. And if he’s so smart, how come he didn’t know that giving his girlfriend excessive promotions and raises was breaking the rules? Is this how it’s done in the U.S. Government or in academia? Didn’t he bother to check? Oh, that’s right – he checked with an outside law firm that didn’t know anything about the Bank’s rules, and apparently didn’t know anything about ethics either…
May 28th, 2007 at 8:51 pmDidn’t Wolfowitz hire Bob Bennett, Clinton’s and Enron’s lawyer, to whip up the media on his behalf? The man certainly spent enough time talking to the press and in front of the cameras. What cheek!
May 28th, 2007 at 8:58 pmsave it for someone that gives a damn wolfie!
May 28th, 2007 at 9:00 pmWolfowitz blames his downfall on the media? Yea. Of course he does. If it never would have been reported, he probably could have had it swept under the table.
May 28th, 2007 at 9:43 pmAh, I remember Wolfy after the initial successes in Iraq, breezing about media outlets basking the feelings of righteousness and vindication.
Then reality dawned, and Wolfy closed the curtains. Confidence is often a mark of foolishness.
Now we are left with this dissembling fool and wonder how he made it so high.
All government administrators should get yearly refresher courses in management 101.
May 28th, 2007 at 10:00 pmI pray for a day when
Wolfowitz Rumsfeld Bush Perle Friedman Broder Krauthammer Dobson Frum Hillary Kerry Edwards Cheney and every political figure,
Every advisor and intellectual
Every pundit and every enabler who led the American people into this Iraqi fiasco
Is no longer taken seriously in this country
I pray for that day.
Obama 08
May 28th, 2007 at 10:03 pmWolfowitz has confirmed that he is a dope.
I hear that he blames his first grade teacher for his monkey ears.
May 28th, 2007 at 10:16 pmWolfowitz should have been fired by the World Bank board. Cutting a deal with Wolfowitz has allowed him to claim that he did nothing wrong, but he was involved in unethical activities.
May 28th, 2007 at 11:06 pmBye Bye delusional man! “It’s the media”, not YOU. ha ha ha. Another failure of the invasion of Iraq. Bush and Condi-the “mushroom cloud coming to get you” preachers will be last, I suppose.
May 29th, 2007 at 12:47 amIf the media had been doing its job properly, Wolfowitz’s lack of qualifications would have been big news when Bush first appointed him to be World Bank president and he would have never gotten the job.
Then, it took the American media a lot longer than the European media to pick up the story on Wolfowitz, his terrible management style, and the juicy deal he cut with his girlfriend so both of them could get rich, tax-free, at the World Bank.
Wolfowitz should be praising the media, not attacking it.
May 29th, 2007 at 1:51 am“I don’t think I could have accomplished what I wanted to accomplish for the people I really care about.”
YEAH, himself and his mistress.
May 29th, 2007 at 8:25 amWell what did you expect. Have you ever heard a RepubliCON accept responsibility for their actions. It’s not in their gene pool which is what makes them such good CONS.

May 29th, 2007 at 11:46 amAnd so, Wolfowitz’s attempt to greenwash his reputation after Iraq has failed just
as miserably as his ill-conceived war itself.
“Instant karma gonna get you!”
May 29th, 2007 at 12:18 pmHey Wolfie! STFU!
May 29th, 2007 at 5:42 pmShasha dumped him right after he got the boot. I’d still like to know how a foriegn national like her got a top secret security clearance at our State Department. The FIRST foriegn national to have that kind of clearance. Somethings stinks here and it’s not just Wolfowitz.
He’s staying until June 30 so he gets a $400,000 bonus. Good job wolfie, I hope your lawyer takes all of it. Now slink back into your hole and don’t ever come out again. It’s hell getting caught isn’t Wolfie?
