Cheney lawyer told Secret Service not to keep visitor logs.»

“A lawyer for Vice President Dick Cheney told the Secret Service in September to eliminate data on who visited Cheney at his official residence, a newly disclosed letter states.”

The Sept. 13, 2006, letter from Cheney’s lawyer says logs for Cheney’s residence on the grounds of the Naval Observatory are subject to the Presidential Records Act.

The Justice Department filed the letter Friday in a lawsuit by a private group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, seeking the identities of conservative religious leaders who visited Cheney at his official residence.

The newly disclosed letter about visitors to Cheney’s residence is accompanied by an 18-page Secret Service document revealing the agency’s long-standing practice has been to destroy printed daily access lists of visitors to the residence.

Separately, the agency says it has given Cheney’s office handwritten logs of who visits him at his personal residence.

UPDATE: Such unethical secrecy is not new for the Vice President. In 2005, the Center for Public Integrity discovered that “Cheney and his staff have been unilaterally exempting themselves from long-standing travel disclosure rules followed by the rest of the executive branch, including the Office of the President.”

    Impeach him NOW.

  2. ForTruth Says:

This goes back to the Jeffy Gannon issue.

“See, we classify all visitation logs, even at Cheney’s house. This has nothing to do with covering up any specific occurrance”

  3. Vance Says:

Late night visits from Gannon and Haggert would be quite embarrassing, though not a shock to most Americans.

Vice-Presidential records shall be subject to the provisions of this chapter in the same manner as Presidential records. The duties and responsibilities of the Vice President, with respect to Vice-Presidential records, shall be the same as the duties and responsibilities of the President under this chapter with respect to Presidential records. The authority of the Archivist with respect to Vice-Presidential records shall be the same as the authority of the Archivist under this chapter with respect to Presidential records, except that the Archivist may, when the Archivist determines that it is in the public interest, enter into an agreement for the deposit of Vice-Presidential records in a non-Federal archival depository. Nothing in this chapter shall be construed to authorize the establishment of separate archival depositories for such Vice-Presidential records.

It is no supprise to me that Cheney is breaking the law.

  8. Mad Max Says:

Wait, there must be a typo. You mean “not subject” surely? Why would Cheney’s lawyer say that he’s subject to any law?

  9. RUCerious Says:

We must come to the realization this administration has no intention of following the laws that govern others. The truly sad part: nothing will be done. Vice President Refuses to Report Classification Activity

For the Fourth year in a row the Office of Vice President Dick Cheney has refused to disclose data on its classification and declassification activity, in an apparent violation of an executive order issued by President Bush.
“The Office of the Vice President (OVP), the President’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board (PFIAB), and the Homeland Security Council (HSC) failed to report their data to ISOO this year,” the Information Security Oversight Office (ISOO) noted in its new 2005 Annual Report to the President

    http://www.fas.org/sgp/isoo/2005rpt.pdf

    (at page 9, footnote 1).

The Office of the Vice President has declined to report such data since 2002. Yet it is clear that disclosure is not optional.

    Hey Vance,

I appreciate the analogy, and agree that BushCo could probably get away with anything at this point, but please be aware that rape is a touchy issue with some of the commenters here.

For the record, I asked if you gave up your lust for pedophiles by switching back to Jake.

    A simple yes will do.

  43. Jake Says:

I never had a lust for pedophiles to begin with. Maybe you were thinking of Cindy Sheehan:

“I have been silent on the Gold Star Moms who still support this man and his war by saying that they deserve the right to their opinions because they are in as much pain as I am. I would challenge them, though, at this point to start thinking for themselves… I am starting to lose a little compassion for them. I know they have been as brainwashed as the rest of America, but they know the pain and heartache and they should not wish it on another. However, I still feel their pain so acutely and pray for these “continue the murder and mayhem” moms to see the light.”

  44. Tom3 Says:

Cheney still thinks Saddam caused 9-11 and had WMD’s. He is insane.

That satisfies my curiosity - you ARE a pedophile then. Thanks for the clarification.

  48. foolme1ns Says:

Does this mean that Cheney broke the law again???? Does this mean that the democrats will whine about it and then do nothing????? Sigh.

Phew, thanks for straightening out that then, as it’s not possible for someone as NASA to by psychotically sexual, then I guess Jake is not a pedophile.

  59. Lee Says:

Cheney is one creepy gargoyle, sorry excuse for a human being. His MOD reminds me of the warden from The Shawshank Redemption.

  60. Kate Henry Says:

If logs for Cheney’s residence on the grounds of the Naval Observatory are subject to the Presidential Records Act, then it seems to me that the Secret Service committed a crime by destroying them.

When are the Democrats going to get off their asses and start doing something about the Bush Crime Family. Talk is cheap and that’s all we have gotten out of them, talk…talk…talk…please….talk…pretty please…talk. I am beginning to believe what the RepubliCONS say about the Democrats, and that is that they are their own worst enemy.

  61. WaltTheMan Says:

    #60 - Kate Henry,
Doesn’t it just tick you off when you realize that Putin knows more about Cheney’s guests, comings and goings than the American people?

  62. katy Says:

    ok… anyone remember THIS picture?

he’s obviously so wasted these days that that thing is useless,
    but i doubt he’s a gannon kind of guy…

    just a guess…

  63. PaulB Says:

When are the Democrats going to get off their asses and start doing something about the Bush Crime Family

The trouble is that there is really only one real remedy and it’s a so-called “nuclear” option — impeachment. Until and unless they are willing to impeach a member of the Bush administration, beginning with Gonzalez and moving on to Cheney and Bush himself, the Bush administration will continue to play these games, confident that they can and will continue to get away with them.

Congress, absent a true “smoking gun” or a true groundswell of public opinion will not impeach and the courts will be really reluctant to get involved.

As long as the Democrats lack sufficent votes to do as you tantrumists demand, you will bash the Democrats, instead of the foot-dragging Republicans who are needed for such votes.

You’re the equivalent of a mindless pro-Bushit troll who doesn’t know what reality is, and doesn’t know what you’re talking about.

  65. Sue B. Says:

It must be so depressing to the good people at Think Progress who give us this critical (& correct) information every day to see what usually happens in the comments afterwards. It seems to always devolve into bathroom humor or someone picking on a troll for whatever alternate reality they choose for that day or a personal battle between a couple of readers about something completely off topic that goes on foreeeeeever. Please! Can we all just try to take the facts…the truth… that Think Progress gives us and do something useful with them/it? Even if it’s just a really good comment section it’s better than what we’re doing now. Show some gratitude for what these folks do for us in this sea of misinformation being spoon-fed to us by Commander Codpiece and the Neo-Clowns. How would you feel if one day these good people just say “you know what?… nevermind - we don’t feel like doing this either”? Where will you get your truth from then? We should be making real suggestions about what to do, telling stories of successes or failures with our elected (or not) officials so others can duplicate or tweek strategies, not name-calling or giving a platform to trolls. Progressives are better than this. The reality based world should be stressing the facts, constantly, like they do with their talibangelical religion, just constantly be bludgeoning the public with the facts. If this means correcting their every sentence then do it. Let’s adopt a universal sound…like the scroinky beep from the game shows…eeeehhhh! WRONG! And then laugh cuz they’re wrong and the REAL story is yada, yada yada. How fun would it be if it catches on and before you know it we can just make the sound and, once again, as in days of yore, they will know something they are spewing is WRONG! Or print up “here’s your sign” cards…to be given out liberally (you’ll excuse the pun) when they become particularly unhinged from reality. And we will have those facts at hand because of terrific sites like Think Progress. Let’s raise the level of discourse just a tad….please?
“Good intentions will always be pleaded for every assumption of authority. It is hardly too strong to say that the Constitution was made to guard the people against the dangers of good intentions. There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters.” Daniel Webster, 1825

  69. buckles Says:

It sure would be nice if Cheney and cronies would actually be held accountable for even one of the laws we know they’ve broken. Something– anything! At what point do these anti-Constititutionalists get thrown in a cell?

  70. Kate Henry Says:

“What’s the matter, get tired of your pedophile moniker?”

Nope, Jake is just the personality that came out to play on this thread. There rarely is more than one troll on each thread. Jake/Mr President/Michael/pedophile are all personalities of one very disturbed individual.

I wish there really was a way to set a moniker to “ignore” other than skipping past their posts. That would solve part of my problem with this site. The other problem is all the posters who play with the trolls. I frequently give up on reading a thread when it deteriorates to a food fight between the resident troll and the resident “let’s play with the troll” sets.

  71. ernieson Says:

Bush, Cheney, Gonzales Company is akin to an 18-wheeler running over a road called the Constitution inclusive of the people of the United States. As it stands now, no one in the oversight capacity of our govt has the courage to attempt to put a stop to their activites, so they will continue forward gaining more momentum and becoming more brazen. We are in precarious times.

  72. SANDRA LALIBERTE Says:

CHENEY NOR BUSH WILL CHANGE UNTIL THE DEMOCRATS GET A BACKBONE. THEY ARE GUTLESS AND NEED TO LEARN HOW TO GO UP AGAINST THE REPUBLICANS, THE ONE THING REPUBLICANS ARE GREAT AT IS PR AND SPINNING EVERYTHING SOMETHING THE DEMOCRATS SERIOUSLY LACK AT. CHENEY AND BUSH COULD BE STOPPED IF AMERICANS WANTED IT STOPPED YOU ARE THE MAJORITY!!! CHENEY IS THE WAR CHENEY DOES WANT WORLD WAR THREE AND BUSH IS TO STUPID TO KNOW WHAT GOES ON AROUND HIM DAILY HE IS THERE PUPPET. I FEEL EVEN CHENEY’S ROLE AS VICE PRESIDENT HAS BEEN ILLEGAL HE HAS HAD TO MUCH POWER MORE THAN PROBABLY ANY PRIOR VICE PRESIDENT AND HALIBURTON WILL THRIVE WITH HIM THERE THAT IS WHY IRAQ IS HAPPENING. BUT UNTIL CONGRESS AND THE SENATE STOP MAKING DEALS AND THE CONGRESS REALIZES THE NEED TO STOP COWERING TO THEM THIS WILL NOT END TILL 09. AND IT WILL BE TO LATE THEN. ANOTHER THING THAT IS VERY DISTURBING IS THE CONSTITUTION BEING IGNORED THEY HAVE BROKE SO MANY LAWS YET NO ONE IS DOING ANYTHING WHY IS THAT? CHENEY AND BUSH SEEM TO THINK THE CONSTITUTION IS WHAT EVER THEY WANT IT TO MEAN TO SUIT THERE UNJUSTIFIED ACTIVITIES.

  73. Brian Smith Says:

When are we going to impeach this guy??

  74. phil Says:

i hope someone kills him and the drunk moron bush.

  75. Dave Says:

We can say all we want, but who here is ready to step up and do anything??? I get all the emails from different leftist groups urging us to sent letters and such, but we’re not actually accomplishing anything. Any voice of reason that actually throws down is silenced (look at Cindy Sheehan)…

We all know Bush lied and Cheney cheated, but apparently even our checks and balances are defiled. Everything this country was built on is now infected and dissolute.

We need to cleanse the debauched bureaucrats AS IS OUR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT!

But who will actually do it?

Or do we all just sit here on discussion threads and agree about how bad things have gotten?

  76. sphincter Says:

You have to fight corruption with corruption. Waving the US law or US constitution in their face is not going to do much good as they don’t care about it. You have the right to bear arms, use it.

  77. makesenseofit Says:

It’s OK for BIG DICK to take care of his own personal life by not allowing the crust of the world to touch upon his territory for reasons
of unlawfulness. But thats OK just don’t you do it.
They forget they are human as well and the laws only apply to everyone else.
A dictatorship in the making and no one seems to care. The terminology used by the mesmerized media is king .. I suppose George is king and DICK is assistant king.
I just can’t make sense of it anymore …
The end of democracy is nearer than we think …
