Media Matters has published a new report, “Left Behind: The Skewed Representation of Religion in Major News Media,” documenting how conservative religious leaders receive far more media coverage than their progressive counterparts.
Despite the fact most religious Americans are moderate or progressive, in the news media it is overwhelmingly conservative leaders who are presented as the voice of religion. This represents a particularly meaningful distortion since progressive religious leaders tend to focus on different issues and offer an entirely different perspective than their conservative counterparts.
Below, a chart comparing media coverage of the top 10 most widely covered conservative (red) and progressive (blue) religious leaders:

Color me shocked.

Dominant Conservative Leaers, Religious Media Coverage.
Religious Media Leders, Conservative Coverage Dominant
Religious Leaeders' Coverage, Conservatives Dominate Media
Go ahead, try it!
May 29th, 2007 at 11:41 amWhy do we need to get the views of religion in our news? Don't the interested parties get their information in church?
May 29th, 2007 at 11:41 amThe media seeks to create a simplistic, polarized view of everything. When dealing with any news story the media will annoint two sides, or nowadays just one side, to define the story. All other competing interests are ignored. Gray is not allowed; it must be black and white. It must be Neocon warriors against surrender monkeys. It must be righteous god-fearing Christians vs. godless, hate-filled, baby murderering liberals. It must be the invisible and silent majority of war supporters vs. the drug trafficker George Soros and MoveOn. It must be saving jobs for American families vs. tree huggers destroying jobs. Or it must whatever two unnamed administration officials say it is.
The media should be deeply ashamed of its performance these past 6 years. But they aren't the least bit so. It seriously calls into question the basic character of the people involved, many of whom are preening narcissists.
May 29th, 2007 at 11:42 amAgain, my friends, this is all about who will bring the higher ratings and bigger sales and has little or nothing to do with balance, fairness, or even true religious beliefs.
We live in a society where 'news' is just another component of entertainment.

People who are truly attemting to emulate Christ would possess qualities of humility, decorum, peacefulness, (what are those fruitages of the spirit again? Oh yeah, "love, joy, peace, long-suffering, mildness, self-control, etc.), qualities that apparently don't play well on the small screen and that fail to appeal to our blood-thirsty, intolerant brand of American Christianity.

May 29th, 2007 at 11:50 amThe religious groups will be glad to learn the man they got paid to put in office twice stabbed them in the back by supporting Mary Cheney's relationship and the birth of the Dicksters grandson. The Church was paid by Satan and now sees the results. People wondered what Jesus or God would say about the Churches/Pastors taking the money to support a liar and crook like the Bush Administration. As told in the bible and by the past we all pay for our sins in the end. The Church killed Jesus without blinking an eye for the money and yes it's happen again. God even showed his power as Israel prayed for success against Hezbella look at those results and who God choose. Makes you really think when you pray as Farwell did when he asked God for twenty more years as God answered him and he got his answer to that request.

1) Why are you quoting from the Bible, by your own admittance you believe it is a joke, mythology. Stop being a hypocrite.
2) I am sure that Jesus Christ would be pleased with the millions upon millions of abortions, killing of innocents being performed by and pushed by the left wingers of America. Don't you be a hypocrite and quote "Thou shall not kill" when the left wing in America is more than ok with killing innocent human babies, whose only "crime" was being conceived.
3)I find it hillarious when the left who hate Christ, hate religion, etc try to tell Christians how to be good Christian.
4)Stop being the typical left winger and stop quoting from the Bible the parts of it that support your ideology. There are many parts of the Bible in which war was necessary to stop evil. Might want to look at the creation of Israel and how it has to fight war, after war, after war to stop evil.
The Beatitudes, which you quote, are but a small part in a very big and complicated book and religion.
I would suggest that you stop being a simpleton and that you run off and get an education.
try to study some theology before you speak of that which you don't know.

No, Daryll, he didn’t. Some examples:
Peacemaking, not War Making: Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. [Matthew 5:9] Resist
not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. [Matthew 5:39] I say unto you, Love your
enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despite-fully use you, and persecute
you; [Matthew 5:44]
The Death Penalty: Thou shalt not kill [Matthew 5:21]
Crime and Punishment: If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to cast a stone at her. [John 8:7] Do not judge, lest
you too be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged and with the measure you use, it will be measured to
you. [Matthew 7:1 & 2.]

2) I am sure that Jesus Christ would be pleased with the millions upon millions of abortions, killing of innocents being performed by and pushed by the left wingers of America. Don’t you be a hypocrite and quote “Thou shall not kill†when the left wing in America is more than ok with killing innocent human babies, whose only “crime†was being conceived.

1) Why are you quoting from the Bible, by your own admittance you believe it is a joke, mythology. Stop being a hypocrite.
Did Zooey ever admit that she believes the Bible is a joke? Can someone clear this up? Zoo? What say you?
2) I am sure that Jesus Christ would be pleased with the millions upon millions of abortions, killing of innocents being performed by and pushed by the left wingers of America. Don’t you be a hypocrite and quote “Thou shall not kill†when the left wing in America is more than ok with killing innocent human babies, whose only “crime†was being conceived.
And this excuses the Right's bear-hug of Christianity while cheerleading a war of choice HOW? I understand WHY you would want to ignore that point, but really, it only makes you feel better, it doesn't make a convincing argument of any kind.
3)I find it hillarious when the left who hate Christ, hate religion, etc try to tell Christians how to be good Christian.
I find it hilarious when wingnuts claim things that are demonstrably untrue and then wave them about as if they were facts. The fact is, there are millions of observant Christians, Jews and Muslims (although the last two probably don't count for you) who are politically liberal because their faith points them in that direction. The fact that those who are not religious would be drawn to a political view that takes seriously their right to dissent is no surprise, but neither should it impugn the religious sincerity of the millions of religious liberals. (Just as the fact that racist Americans would be drawn to the Republican party should not impugn the racial values of mainstream Republicans.)
4)Stop being the typical left winger and stop quoting from the Bible the parts of it that support your ideology. There are many parts of the Bible in which war was necessary to stop evil. Might want to look at the creation of Israel and how it has to fight war, after war, after war to stop evil.
You're right. WE should give a fuller, more balanced picture of the Bible and leave it to right-wingers to freely quote only those "the parts of it that support your ideology" right? Yes, there are parts of the Bible that celebrate warfare. But how many of those parts are in the words of Jesus? You know Jesus, the Christ ? the guy for whom the Christian religion is named? Seems to me that if you want to be a true Christian you're going to want to follow Christ. And if you're going to follow Christ, you're going to want to pay attention to WHAT CHRIST SAID. The Old Testament should be secondary to a Christian, right?
The Beatitudes, which you quote, are but a small part in a very big and complicated book and religion.
True, but they are among the very few sections of this "big and complicated book" that report words actually attributed to Jesus Christ. Therefore, perhaps a Christian might take them a bit more seriously than all the rest of it.
I would suggest that you stop being a simpleton and that you run off and get an education.
try to study some theology before you speak of that which you don’t know.
We poor uneducated libs should take your kind-hearted admonishments to heart. After all your words come from a true loving Christian heart, right? Thanks for your generosity, such as it is.

First, nice advertisment of places you'll be visiting in Rio (though ,why do I doubt it will be to "save" souls). Geez, if I were not married, or not faithful, I would now know where to visit. (and another point, how does one in your church "learn" about such places? Ton of "research" on the internets?)
Second, congrats on "personally" saving 12 souls. Now, here's my questions for you.
Were they saved by personally accepting and developing a relationship with Jesus Christ, as their savior, or are they just conforming to your church's rules and regulations?
Big difference, ya know.

Comment by Newt Gringo — May 29, 2007 @ 1:03 pm
Newt, good question. Here's an interesting exercise: let's go through the Ten Commnadments one by one and see how many actually relate to our laws. I'm sure it will be an educational experience for teh wingnuts, since they often trumpet the Ten Commandments but then can't list them.
1. I am the Lord thy God. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
In our laws? Nope. The establishment of a state religion is expressly forbidden under the US Constitution.
2. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord in vain.
In our laws? Nope. Freedom of speech and all that.
3. Keep holy the Sabbath.
In our laws? In scattered rural counties, mainly in the south. Known as blue laws. Not expressly forbidden by the Constitution, but hardly a cornerstone of society.
4. Honor thy mother and thy father.
In our laws? Nope. Nothing in our legal system reflects any kind of respect or honor legally due our family members or community elders. Sure, you can't abuse them, but that's not the same thing as "honor", is it?
5. Thou shalt not kill.
In our laws? Absolutely. That's one.
6. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
In our laws? Again, there are isolated pockets where adultery is a crime, but, really, it's nothing but a civil matter between married couples, primarily. So, NOPE. And Rudy Giuliani, Newt Gingrich, Ted Haggard and a whole slew of Republicans are mighty grateful for that, too.
7. Thou shalt not steal.
In our laws? Absolutely. That's two.
8. Thou shalt not bear false witness.
In our laws? You bet. Ask Scooter Libby about this one. That's three.
9. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife.
In our laws? Not even close. Hell, if coveting our neighbor's wife were a crime, we wouldn't have an advertising or entertainment industry.
10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house.
In our laws? Nope. see number 9.
There we have it. A grand total of THREE commandments enshrined in the laws of our nation. Not such a good record, is it? Mybe that's what's got Daryll's knickers in a twist.

May 29th, 2007 at 1:55 pmJesus was very clear that his death would not make these laws obselete.
“Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law" (John7:19)
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest part or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place." (Matthew 5:17)

Why do I ask you for an answer? Because you have been unable to provide one to a simple question. You may not have recognized them, but I posted all ten commandments earlier. So I don't really need to "research" it anymore.
You made the claim that one of the commandments says that rape is wrong. I don't see which one says that. Why can't you defend your statement?
It's a proven right-wing tactic, though: when you're caught in a lie, play the victim and blame those who want the truth. Sloppily played, but as a wingnut you can't be faulted for trying.

May 29th, 2007 at 2:13 pmSunday, we saved 12 souls. I can’t wait to save souls in Rio (Dec 18-24). We will visit the favelas to testify about Jesus’ works. Beware, Termas (4×4, Luomos, Solarium, etc.), Escort Services, and Club Help, we’re coming for you.
Comment by Monsignor Daryll of 2 Secondland — May 29, 2007 @ 12:06 pm
First, nice advertisment of places you’ll be visiting in Rio (though ,why do I doubt it will be to “save†souls). Geez, if I were not married, or not faithful, I would now know where to visit. (and another point, how does one in your church “learn†about such places? Ton of “research†on the internets?)
Second, congrats on “personally†saving 12 souls. Now, here’s my questions for you.
Were they saved by personally accepting and developing a relationship with Jesus Christ, as their savior, or are they just conforming to your church’s rules and regulations?
Big difference, ya know.
Third, since you pick and choose quotes from the Bible, you have yet to answer my question posed to you months ago. I’ll ask, again:
Daryll, am I going to H E Double L because I am married to a woman who is once divorced?
Comment by DRxJ — May 29, 2007 @ 1:18 pm
Yes, unless you leave her and repent. Per Luke, you do not have a marital relationship with this woman. Per the bible, she's currently an adulterer and you're a fonicator. You can marry her when her spouse is deceased (I'm not supporting murder at all). Second, we and my fellow brothers and sister's in Christ have conducted research on these sex venues in Rio to stop the devil from influencing foreigners and local citizens to commit various sinful acts. Are churchgroup (soul seekers) will be visiting Rio for the glorification of God. If vacationers and locals want sex, they should marry someone from the opposite gender. Also, the 12 souls were baptized in the name of Jesus and received the Holy Ghost. They did not accept an oath.

That's because their mommies were afraid to send them to public schools. Of course since they're all living in some shit hole small town in the hills somewhere public schools might not have helped them. They think being homeschooled is the same as going to a private school. And they have no idea how many crappy private schools there are out there, most of them religious in the back of a church somewhere. But because their mommies, with IQs of about 80 told them how smart they are they believe it.

Well then, I am blissfully ignorant, and damn proud of it!!!

I stand corrected. You never actualy claimed to be a Christian, just presented yourself as an expert in Christian theology. I made the leap of logic to conclude that you are a Christian because of the disdain with which you treated everyone who had presumably less familiarity with the texts of the faith than you do.
This should be easy to settle, though: are you a Christian?
Because if you were, then you certainly would proclaim it, right? You wouldn't deny it, like Peter, would you?

But Christ was a Jew who followed the Old Testament and the ten commandments. And he didn't write the new testament, the version you follow was written 1,500 years after his death. So shouldn't a Christian assume that he meant for all to follow the Old Testament with the additions.

"Idiot, the Jews don’t use the Bible, the Bible is Christian, they don’t have a Bible, idiot."
Um, I don't even where to start here. The word bible literally means nothing more than 'book'. The Holy Bible is a collections of books. THe Christian bible adds a new testament to the original bible that the Jews have used for thousands of years. The Muslims disregarded the Christian edition, and added there own addition to the original text. All three use the Old Testament.
"and I see that you keep on ignoring the inquisition comment."
I find it interesting that you want to justify the inquisition because other 'secular' leaders did the same thing. Not going to argue that point. It's not as if those that were doing it felt they were outside the allowable dictates of 'God's' laws. I wasn't trying to say that all Christian's are murderous warrioirs.

May 29th, 2007 at 2:26 pmZooey, the reason it is important that media fairly represent the spiritual feelings of Americans is, as the article points out, that America is religiously liberal and progressive. All religions deal with the issues of morality and daily life. They speak of war, peace, life, and death. And religion asks the question What's it all about? Which becomes important when one is discussing world trade, global warming, and and prison reform.
The Darylls, Virulent Haters, and Patrick1trickponies of this world want a nostalgic faith from the 1950s with a Sunday School catechism that never heard of Bultmann or Campbell or Tillich. It wants a religion that is thoroughly middleclass and respectable --that is to say, Philistine and thoroughly unChristlike.
I was glad to see this thread because I've had some rather pointless arguments with "organized" atheists on TP who seem to think all spiritual people should be damned for not somehow overcoming the rantings of the Religious Right. Well, I would point out that there are more on the Religious Left than on the right and they suffer from media bias. And the liberal/progressive movement in America is largely driven by liberal Christians and Jews of the 19th and early 20th century.
I will post a link to Rabbi Lerner's Tikkun journal where he introduces Senator Obama speaking on Religiophobia.
I'm interested that the Rightwing trolls are so active in this thread. I think they're threatened. If the atheists --and logically atheism is no more provable than theism-- would only acknowledge that most religious moderates are on their side, the movement would be so much stronger. You attract more flies with honey than vinegar. You see, the Darylls of this World are selling a load of outdated and theologically whiffy BS. Even a Catholic blowhard like Donohue has to talk a pre-Vatican II line when he's debating because the Vatican isn't as conservative as he is.
Islam is not a religion of Terrorism. Nor is Christianity the foundation for neo-conservativism. And, I'm sorry, Daryll, but one can pick and choose. There's no one meaning to the Bible. All sacred texts must be approached with caution and pondered. They're not just platitudes. And the Bible in particular is the result of centuries of picking and choosing. (Ever compared a Catholic Bible with a Protestant? or with the Jewish Books of Scriptures? All different!)
Religion is an important part of the lives of the majority of Americans. It makes sense to discuss it in the news. Just as one consults ethnic leaders or labor leaders or various experts on military history, one should consult the nation's spiritual leaders. And it's misleading of the media to give a pulpit to a squeaky wheel like Jerry Falwell and to ignore the leaders who actually speak for the traditional religions.

So you think Jews don't believe in the Bible. And the Old Testament appeared out of nowhere. Are you so stupid that you don't know that Christ considered himself a Rabbi. And you're right that Jews didn't use the bible as their rules of laws they used the Talmud for laws and the Torah for deciphering scriptures. But I guess when they were writing a bible that was simple enough for you shitheads up in some hollow in the hills they had to take all the complicated stuff out.
May 29th, 2007 at 2:35 pmTruly though you can never understand what Jesus truly meant until you understand that the Old Testament, including Genesis, was meant as simplifications for the people who couldn't do the serious religious studies. You need to read the Torah, especially, the Talmud and the Dead Sea Scrolls to actually understand what Jesus meant. And that requires a little more theology than your shit-for-brains fundie preacher would ever be able to handle.

May 29th, 2007 at 2:46 pmLeftwingersarevirulenthaters, I'm sorry, but the Inquisition was very real. It did not happen in quite the way that some think or everywhere or always at the instigation of the Church.
The State has always coveted the absolute power of divinity while the Church has easily been seduced by the temporal powers of the State. The Two, if kept separate, can inform and reform one another. The first amendment is just as much to keep the State out of the Church as it is the Church out of the State. However, I don't think this separation means exclusion. It is interesting that most of the Churches being investigated by the IRS for political activity are liberal/progressive --rarely does the Christian Right get reprimanded.`

May 29th, 2007 at 2:48 pmleftwingersaremoonbats,
Theological foundations for the Inquisition
The proponents of the Inquisition (and, amazingly, apologists since the Inquisition ended in 1834), point to both Biblical and theological sources for its justification. The biblical passages most often quoted by the early Inquisitors were from Mosaic Law, in the Old Testament. This is, of course, somewhat questionable theology, as Mosaic Law regarding, say, dietary restrictions were completely ignored by the Church from the 1st century on, yet suddenly (in the 13th century), Mosaic Law seemed to be a perfectly reasonable justification for burning thousands of people at the stake! Key passages are quoted below (edited for brevity):
(From Deuteronomy 13 NIV) “If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you...and he says, "Let us follow other gods"...That prophet or dreamer must be put to death...You must purge the evil from among you.
If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you love, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, "Let us go and worship other godsâ€...do not yield to him or listen to him. Show him no pity. Do not spare him or shield him...You must certainly put him to death. Your hand must be the first in putting him to death, and then the hands of all the people. Stone him to death...Then all Israel will hear and be afraid, and no one among you will do such an evil thing again.
If you hear it said about one of the towns the LORD your God is giving you to live in that wicked men have arisen among you and have led the people of their town astray...then you must inquire, probe and investigate it thoroughly. And if it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done among you, you must certainly put to the sword all who live in that town. Destroy it completely, both its people and its livestock.
Gather all the plunder of the town into the middle of the public square and completely burn the town and all its plunder as a whole burnt offering to the LORD your God. It is to remain a ruin forever, never to be rebuilt.â€
(From Exodus 22:18 NIV) "Do not allow a sorceress to live.â€
Many of the elements found in the aforementioned extracts from Mosaic Law would later be closely emulated by the Inquisition, including:
“Purging†of “prophets and dreamers†(the charge that lead to the death of Joan of Arc)
Family members in the Inquisition were encouraged to testify against each other
Putting to death heretics as an example to others
The guidance to “inquire, probe and investigate†towns that have gone astray could be a job description for later Inquisitors!
Destruction of whole towns, to wipe out heresy
It was much more difficult for the proponents of the Inquisition to find New Testament justification for their acts. The most often quoted New Testament verse is from John 15:
(John 15:6 NIV) “If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.â€

That is why the bible reflects that she can separate from her spouse, but would rather that she eventually reconciled with that individual. She can only divorce if she witnesses her spouse commiting adultery. Even then, she still can't marry another male until her spouse is deceased. She's biblically bound to him until death. This is the reason why the bible states that you must go into marriage whole heartedly, which means you shouldn't compromise your beliefs or standards for the purpose of marriage. That's the problem with society today.

All fundamentalism is rooted in Nationalism. The real fear is the Cosmoplitan world where the man next to you on your right may be a Sikh and the woman across from you be a Muslim and the woman to your left a neo-Darwinist. I think this is the real source of hostility toward the UN: the Right fears Americans will go native --or in this case, Cosmo.
May 29th, 2007 at 3:04 pmThis is the reason why the bible states that you must go into marriage whole heartedly, which means you shouldn’t compromise your beliefs or standards for the purpose of marriage. That’s the problem with society today. Comment by Daryll — May 29, 2007 @ 3:01 pm

(sigh) I explained once, that you don't have to CLAIM to be a right-winger in order to be categorized as one. Your ridiculous railings against "left wingers" are enough to safely demonstrate that you're a right-winger. After all, you've made blanket statements criticizing many, many posters here as being "left-wingers" or "moonbats". When did any of them claim to be left-wingers or moonbats? If they didn't make those claims, how could you categorize them as such?
But on to more important matters:
ARE YOU A CHRISTIAN?
You've responded twice to posts containing this question, yet you've ignored it both times. I wonder why that is?

David, what?!
Please, the right is against ILLEGAL immigration, not against Immigration, thus your stupid comment about fear of diversity is unfounded and silly.
Furthermore, this left wing idea that diversity of races is great, is also silly. Why don't you travel to England, France, Germany, etc, and see what diversity has done to this once great nations. Poverty is rampant here and under the disguise of political correctness and diversity, governments are afraid to crack down on the crimes being committed by "diversed" groups.
I mean by your logic, David, what is wrong then with accepting a Nazi? he/she would part of this Cosmo crap you talk about, right?
and as far as the United Nations, please my friend, the United Nations is an organization ran by thug nations that use the UN plataform to slam Israel and the USA.
Diversity can be great, but diversity can also be bad. Left wingers seem to want to accept anything and everything under the guise of diversity.
In reality, it is left wingers who are terrified of true diversity, which comes in the form of different ideas and ideologies. Diversity goes beyond skin deep.

May 29th, 2007 at 3:17 pmDaryll, you really don't seem to know the Bible at all. Have you been run through one of those awful Alpha courses? Or a quickie catechism?
Marriage is not really a concern of the early Christians. Paul thought one should avoid it if possible. Jesus' comments on Divorce Laws aren't meant as new laws at all. The Catholics have understood it that way, but the Protestants don't. Like the Kosher Laws, Jesus calls us to be mindful of what we do and say. To mean it. This is meant as a repuke to the religiosity of the Philistines --and dare I say today's fundamentalists.
Daryll, Jesus told you NOT TO JUDGE. So stop judging. And leftwingersareVirulentHaters, you'd do better to stop coveting the wisdom of others. It's a sin. What kooky Church do you belong to, Daryll? The Bible is NOT the Word of God, but inspired by the Word of God. The New Testament is NOT the New Law. This is fundamentalist claptrap. The letters, although they contain the odd inspiring word are NOT THE WORD OF GOD. They can't be. Paul actually says he's writing as Paul and his letters are addressing real problems in the First Century Church.

May 29th, 2007 at 4:26 pmNewt Gringo, do you not know the tale of Dinah? Gensis 34. It's a curioius tale of forbidden love or rape or what you will. I've always taken the position that Dinah wasn't raped, but merely acted against her father's wishes.
However, the whole thing of rape is difficult to define as the status of women was very different 2500 years ago. And has only recently changed. (It was a big shift in the 1970s to charge a husband with rape.)
I like the tale of Dinah, because it's shocking and Dinah's voice is never heard. She's clearly a victim of her brother's pride. But I think the story bears study. Consider what Rabbi Isaac Sachs has to say HERE.

and by the way, I have sponsored several immigrants who are now American citizens and I will continue to do so as I try to live my life with a hand extended to those less fortunate than me. You should try it sometime, instead of trying to force feed your god and your views on others and allow them to follow their OWN BELIEFS. You go on your missions to foreign lands using food and other essentials as your bribe to try to force your god on them. They are desperate and willing to do anything to survive, including promising to follow your beliefs. To me that is extortion of the worst kind.
May 29th, 2007 at 4:38 pmDaryll, what Jesus says in Matthew about marriage is cryptic. And Paul is resigned to marriage. Being moved to write things doesn't mean one is being dictated to. And the very words said may have been corrupted and mistranslated and so every scholar must ponder the words for their meaning. How can you take as universal words written to a specific group in Corinth over 900 years ago? You have to temper the words with reason.
And Julius Caesar had been dead almost 70 years when Jesus spoke "Render unto Caesar what is Caesar and unto God what is God's". Again, Daryll, pack up your childish things and go home. This line is also cryptic. What does it mean? Did Jesus mean us to obey Tiberius? Or his successors Caligula and Nero? Don't make me laugh. You really are a nutter. Or are you proposing this as Jesus' Separation of Church & State clause? The verse is cryptic. It's a riddle, Daryll. Can you figure it out?

Daryll never says what church he belongs to. I think he's ashamed to admit where he goes to church.
May 29th, 2007 at 4:40 pmI did state that the bible permits them to separate, but you apparently didn’t read my post completely.
Comment by Daryll
Yes, separation, blah blah. But you also said she is bound to the man until death, and if she marries another man she is fornicating, or some such shit.
There is something wrong with your mind, Daryll.
Oh, I know what it is — you refuse to think for yourself.
Dismissed.

That's why I stated that you're supposed to go into marriage with a whole heart. You shouldn't compromise your standards and beliefs, and you shouldn't fornicate with the person before marriage. Marriage is a serious biblical pact. The problem is that society believes it is a casual pact.

Our understanding of psychology today has most progressive Jews & Christians extending the innocence to even the girl who could have called out for help by was afraid.
Daryll seems unaware that the Church had no opinion on abortion prior to a woman's quickening until the late 19thC. And that was largely in response to the rise of women's rights and contraception.

Now since you are a bible literalist, do you take 1 wife, or does the bible suggest poligamy?
this issue the bible contradicts itself, as it does on multiple issues.
Lamech, Abraham, Jacob, David, Solomon, and others all had multiple wives. Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines
Yet in Deuteronomy 17:14-20, that the kings were not supposed to have multiple wives. This most definitely put most of the old testimate proffets in direct disobedience against the Lord.
No wonder you "bible scholars" are so freaking confused.

and by the way, I have sponsored several immigrants who are now American citizens and I will continue to do so as I try to live my life with a hand extended to those less fortunate than me.

Yeah, it's the same requirement as the Taliban and Muslim fundamentalists - they just require it "in-doors" instead of "out-of-doors". The requirements come from the same religious origins. Ironic - eh?
Daryll only hates the *other* fundamentalists, because he's such a zealot he doesn't realize he hates them because they're JUST like he is!

May 29th, 2007 at 6:39 pmokay, upon working a busy schedule after the holiday, I thought for sure I'd be finished posting here.
But viola, St. daryll posts misinformation, and I feel I have to respond:
Dude, if you're not a parody, you're brainwashed, plain and simple.
No wonder you remained "sacred" until marriage at 40. Most women would not put up with the "man is better" mentality your organization (not a church) believes.
No offense, but my wife is quite the Christian, and believe you me, she is definetly not subservent (Hell, being vertically challenged, she's got more of a chip on her shoulder then Dick Cheney...and that's what I love about her. We can be challenged about certain aspects of Christianity, and ,you know, talk about said subject. Example: She doesn't feel her best friend should go to Hell for being Jewish. We discuss. but according to you, I should beat her for questioning? Uh, no. Not if I prize my jewels, if you know what I mean)
Anyways, take heed, ol' confused one. Follow the words of PLC and david, who happen to be two of the most intellictual, informative followers of religion you and I shall ever come across!
Your goal is to save many souls here on TP. My goal is to steer you from the blind, uninformative- following mentality (such as the Taliban), to dwelve deeply into the word of Our Lord, and to understand that the ideology of Christianity is not of blind obedience, but of a humble, personal relationship with Jesus.
That is the first step.
Without that, you have nothing.
Are you willing to take that leap?
Just sayin' (rambling)
May 29th, 2007 at 7:54 pmWell, I go to dinner and find you guys have run poor Daryll to ground like a fox chased by the hounds. LOL.
Daryll, Daryll. Why are you following that man? You do realize he's committing half a dozen heresies right on his website. And is this the pastor who, as a recruiting stunt, will take a sledge hammer to a plaster statue of the Virgin Mary? Is he one of those guys who cannot deal with the Trinity? Or the idea that Jesus was wholly human? (That's what's behind the mystery of the Trinity.)
Dear Daryll, your pastor Gino Jennings is a fraud. He said he's had a vision and then he's gone and preached nothing but how to live 2000 years ago. Good Gawd, Daryll! If you wanted that, I can recommend some good Hassidic texts. Or perhaps Old Order Mennonite. But this Gino guy is bad news and he's leading you away from any understanding of the Christianity. And by that I mean what 90% of professed Christians understand it to be.
Do yourself a favour, my child. Go and get Ken Davis' Don't know much about the Bible. It's a simple overview of the Bible for grownups. It's an easy read, but I'm afraid it'll shock someone like you. And yet it's all up to date and supported by the latest scholarship.
Sorry, kid. I guess we should've known you were way way out on the fringe.
May 29th, 2007 at 8:18 pmI quote the band Genesis:
You see the face on the tv screen
Coming at you every sunday
See that face on the billboard
That man is me
On the cover of the magazine
Theres no question why Im smiling
You buy a piece of paradise
You buy a piece of me
Ill get you everything you wanted
Ill get you everything you need
Dont need to believe in hereafter
Just believe in me
Cos jesus he knows me
And he knows Im right
Ive been talking to jesus all my life
Oh yes he knows me
And he knows Im right
And hes been telling me
Everything is alright
I believe in the family
With my ever loving wife beside me
But she dont know about my girlfriend
Or the man I met last night
Do you believe in god
Cos thats what Im selling
And if you wanna get to heaven
Ill see you right
You wont even have to leave your house
Or get outta your chair
You dont even have to touch that dial
Cos Im everywhere
And jesus he knows me
And he knows Im right
Ive been talking to jesus all my life
Oh yes he knows me
And he knows Im right
Well hes been telling me
Everythings gonna be alright
Wont find me practising what Im preaching
Wont find me making no sacrifice
But I can get you a pocketful of miracles
If you promise to be good, try to be nice
God will take good care of you
Just do as I say, dont do as I do
Im counting my blessings,
Ive found true happiness
Cos Im getting richer, day by day
You can find me in the phone book,
Just call my toll free number
You can do it anyway you want
Just do it right away
Therell be no doubt in your mind
Youll believe everything Im saying
If you wanna get closer to him
Get on your knees and start paying
Cos jesus he knows me
And he knows Im right
Ive been talking to jesus all my life
Oh yes he knows me
And he knows Im right
Well hes been telling me
Everythings gonna be alright, alright
Jesus he knows me
Jesus he knows me, you know...
Nuff said.

Once again DrxJ, she is not a christian. The definition of Christian is Christ-like. If she's not following his guidelines, she is not being Christ-like, and, therefore, is not a christian. Two, I've made this statement before, she's not your wife. She belongs to her ex-husband. She can only divorce her spouse, once she views him commiting adultery. Even then, she still can't re-marry until he is deceased. Currently, she's a adulteress and you're a fornicator. You're not married. Your relationship is equivalent to two individuals having an intimate relationship without being married. If you want to go to heaven, leave her now!!! I understand that she was abused, and no woman should have to deal with any form of abuse. But the bible states that she can separate from her spouse. They both need to attend marriage counseling to resolved his issue and mend their marriage. Find a single woman that hasn't been married before. Listed below are scriptural texts for your to read:
Mattew 5:
31"It has been said, 'Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.'[a] 32But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery.
Genesis 2:
20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam [a] no suitable helper was found. 21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs [b] and closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib [c] he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman, [d] ' for she was taken out of man."24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
Malachi 2:
16 "I hate divorce," says the LORD God of Israel, "and I hate a man's covering himself [a] with violence as well as with his garment," says the LORD Almighty. So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith.
Matthew 19:
6So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery."
Mark 10:
11He answered, "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. 12And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery."
Luke 16:
18"Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
Romans 7:
2For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage. 3So then, if she marries another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress, even though she marries another man.
I Corinthians 7:
10To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband. 11But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife.
Revelations 19:
May 30th, 2007 at 9:52 am9Then the angel said to me, "Write: 'Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!' " And he added, "These are the true words of God."
