Internet Gossip Monger Matt Drudge Blasts Olbermann As A ‘Phony’

drudgeOn his Sunday night radio program, Matt Drudge blasted Keith Olbermann as a “phony,” calling him “complete and utter camp.”

Drudge — the operator of the right-wing pseudo news site Drudge Report — was talking about the Venezuelan government’s shutdown of the country’s oldest private TV station when he veered the discussion into a hit piece on Olbermann. “When we start hearing that the National Guard is seizing television stations, alright then I’m on board,” Drudge said. “Then I’m on board, Olbermann. Until then, it’s all pancake, makeup, and Edward R. Murrow ‘good night and good luck’ and…complete and utter camp.”

“What’s being peddled over there at MSNBC” is “phony — phony lights, phony music, and everything there,” said Drudge, an Internet gossip who frolics in “the most salacious aspects of American politics.”

In 1998, Matt Drudge ran a TV series on Fox. Olbermann said at the time that Drudge “has gone from being an idiot with a modem to an idiot with a modem and a television show on the most irresponsible network in America.”

Digg It!

Transcript:

DRUDGE: When we start hearing that the National Guard is seizing television stations, alright then I’m on board. Then I’m on board, Olbermann. Until then, it’s all pancake, makeup, and Edward R. Murrow good night and good luck and all… you know. Camp. Camp! That’s the right word to describe what’s being peddled over there at MSNBC. Complete and utter camp.

OLBERMANN (voice over): “Good night and good luck.”

DRUDGE: And some people are taking it seriously because they think it’s on TV so it has to be real. Please. And then they take off the hair, they take off the teeth, and they peel the face off — and then it’s you know, it’s all this phony — phony lights, phony music, and everything there.

Why would anybodywith with even an ounce of brains pay any attention to anything Drudge says??? There is apparently a lot of people in this world with less than an ounce of brains! That is scarey… I agree the hat is stupid….I would love to see him go one on one with Keith in a debate of the issues… That would be a show to watch. Keith would destroy him..

    Complete and utter camp?

Drudge: You are a self-made cartoon. In a twisted sense of the phrase, you are also a “hard-boiled Dick”.

  15. JC says:

  17. hellinabucket says:

Drudge has a right to his own opinion. No matter how full of crap he is. But he doesn’t have a right to his own facts. KO reports facts and then discusses with his opinion interjected.

A man with a 50’s fedora is calling KO camp. Can’t take that, or him, serious.

    Patrick1,

Olbermann is the second-highest rated political talk show on teevee, after O’Reilly.

He beats Tucker Carlson, Chris Matthews, Sean Hannity, Lou Dobbs, and Glenn Beck.

AND he can explain the difference between a nickel package and a nickel-linebacker defense.

I must admit I don’t think much of Mr. Drudge…

Anyone seen Bertolucci’s “The Conformist”? Drudge is just like that sorry sap. Matt Drudge is another secret homosexual who strongly supports authoritarianism, whose efforts to sublimate his sexual desire morph into a sick desire to repress freedom for all. He’s a crawling bag of fear.

  31. the republic of stupidity says:

  37. joe says:

    katy,

    Since you asked:

A nickel package puts five defensive backs (cornerbacks and safeties) on the field, instead of four. This means you have one less linebacker or defensive lineman.

In a nicke-linebacker package, you put five linebackers on the field (instead of the usual four or three), leaving just two down linemen.

Olberman got started as a sports radio figure.

  38. Coral says:

Does the constant banter between reporters really, REALLY matter? Regarding the shutdown of Venezuela’s oldest TV station, I think alll forms of censorship lead to disaster. But this could be a case of out with the old and in with the new and shiny. There’s no cause for alarm until there seems to be a trend of shutting things off. The Internet will be the next target for censure and it will impode on itself next, you watch.

Some people protest too much. A tempest in a teapot springs to mind.

Riiiight, ct… that why Olbermann’s ratings have been climbing and climbing quater after quarter… because… nobody… watches. Just keep telling yourself that, over and over again, until you’re totally confused (because right now you seem only partially confused…).

Does the moron really believe that countries become Police States overnight? Countries become Police States one small, almost insignificant, “security necessity” at a time, long before it all comes crushing down. By the time Drudge “is willing to get on board”, IT’S TOO LATE.

    Idiot.

  47. Candyce says:

  60. Mr. Bush Goes To Hell says:

    Let’s see…

Olbermann uses FACTS in his news.

    Drudge uses gossip, rumor, innuendo…

Yeah, tough choice on who is a REAL News Man…

    Olbermann is a PATRIOT.

Drudge is another fake “news” entertainer like Rush, Coulter, Hannity, and foxnews…

  61. Norm says:

Drudge you are a idiot. Olbermann would wipe the floor with your right wing dribble. Yes you do have on occasion some good stories but you are very slanted toward the right. So your attack on Mr. Olbermann is pure jealously. And please get rid of that hat you sir are not true reporter, so the hat does not make you one.

  62. Proud American Liberal says:

When Matt Drudge calls Edward R. Murrow “camp”, he hasn’t gone out on a limb, he has crossed the line into irrevelevance, along with other right wings harpies like Limbaugh, Coulter, Hannity, and O’Reilly.

  63. NastyDiaper says:

    Drudge is not an Idiot.

His ability to misrepresent the facts, entertain and stupify his audience shows high aptitude.

And in wingnutland, that’s the only aptitude required.

  64. Merlin says:

    Seriously…

What I find so refreshing these days is that Sludge, O’LIEly and cohorts as well as their masters, the neocons at the white house, used to be taken “seriously” every time they opened their mouths. Today everything the wingnuts say is laughed at by everyone but the 28%ers. (Gives new meaning to “seriously” doesn’t it trollies?) Their right wing “reality” of WMDs, mushroom clouds and orange alerts, purple fingers and the surge, is seen as fantasy and delusion at best, and deceitful or incompetent at worst.

Reality is “the devil” to the believer. How sweet it is.

Good morning trollies! Hey Pee1, did you have a nice meeting in the “troll locker room” over at the “West Hollywood Gym for Men”? Rumor has it Drudge was the featured speaker today. He sure pulled your chain about Olberman didn’t he. You sure are going to bat for him today. I guess he is one of your heroes, huh? Too bad he is such a loser. Well, as long as you had a good time, who am I to criticize. Birds of a feather, you know…

  65. Thomas M says:

Drudge, with his contrived Walter Winchell persona replete with hat (suspenders?) calling Olbermann a phony?

  66. Erroll says:

Drudge has always tried to emulate another purveyor of gossip, Walter Winchell, right down to the hat. In his declining years, Winchell became a parody of himself. Drudge seems intent upon going down that same road.

Hmmm… So Drudge is a parody of a parody of a parody? Seems apt.

  68. loretta says:

hopefully Olbermann will give this no mention at all. Drudge is no more than a gossip gatherer who follows the Fox line–distract distract distract the masses from what’s really important—shine the spotlight over there so as to keep the “people” off guard.
Drudge is a like a bad vaudeville-era joke with a worse punchline struggling, like Ann Coulter, to have us all notice him. Too bad he can’t pull his dress up over his head, always works for Ann.

  69. Jo-Ann says:

Matt Drudge was the father of faux news, “leaked” by the right to the web. Now Olbermann and a few very fact credible sites have shown Drudge to be all hat and no cattle. Truth’s a bitch. At least we can crowd out the lies now.

  70. Jay Randal says:

Olbermann does scare the right, he has a following, and it is growing every day. He is far better looking then anyone the right can toss up, and he doesn’t wear a bow tie.

I guess the inability to govern, or do anything without screwing it up royally is killing the right. Fine by me. Soon it will not matter.

I get calls to clean up these computers and it is amazing how many sites they go to without any popup blockers or firewalls. Their computers are a mess with so much crap poping up it is quite funny. I clean out their systems but then show them how much crap they are getting by going to these sites. As long as you had loverboy O’rielly, and Limbaugh propping up your insane notions, it was okay. But somone who is able to speak, who is a voice of reason in a desert of insanity, must drive you crazy. So yes you do fear him, just as you fear everything, and everyone else.

Side note to Jim, Olbermann doesn’t come across has hateful, Limbaugh, and your other media idols certianly qualify. I realize you need to believe that Olbermann has nothing going for him, except his show keeps moving up in the ratings. The radical right is dead unable to govern.

The difference between Limbaugh’s “bias”, is that it’s based on an ability to *lie*, whereas Keith’s is based on an ability to present the *truth*. Does that sound familiar – st*pid c*nt?

So tell me st*pid c*nt. If one of our news organizations helped incite and organize a Coup against Bush – would you think he would hesitate to label them as a “terrorist” organization and shut them down? Wow, then you must really like how Chavez is an Anti-Terrorist leader!!! That’s exactly the sort of “strong” leadership you’ve been calling for c*nt – why such a whiny attitude about it?

    Krazny,

I believe the “Democrats” gained seats in the last election, not “liberals”. How many Democrats won elections while running as “conservatives or moderates”? If the liberals had won the election, funding for the troops abroad would have been cut off to stop the war in its tracks.

Keith Olbermann scares conservatives? Good one. You think Mr. Olbermann balances out Rush Limbaugh, Matt Drudge, or Bill O’rielly? I would think the likes of television networks such as CNN, MSNBC, NPR, CBS Evening News, NBC Nightly News and ABC World News Tonight more than balance out Rush or Drudge. News coverage is HEAVILY tilted to the left. That’s why I find it funny when I hear complaints about Fox News or talk radio. The left has a huge advantage in media coverage.

That being said, with such a huge media advantage, why can’t liberals really take control of Congress or capture the White House on a regular basis? The answer is that “liberalism” is out of touch with the American people’s ideals. If it wasn’t, why do liberals run as conservatives or moderates?

Actually it has to do with the media not being as “liberal” as you claim. Please if the media was sooo liberal, why does Bush get a free pass on so much stuff? And yes you are afraid of Olbermann, he doesn’t cower to you, or you rapid hatred. You don’t like the idea that someone is smarter then Bill, better looking then Rush, and more popular then Hannity. Actually, the “liberals” did much better in both the primaries and the general election than those “conservative” and “moderate” candidates did. In fact most of Rahm’s “picked” middle of the road candidates lost – whereas many of the non-Rahm “liberal” candidates won.

But don’t let “reality” spoil that little wingnut fantasy of yours!

I hate to inform you of this *wingnut*, but the *majority* of Americans hold *liberal* opinions on virtually every issue that you *conservatives* are against. Without selling them “fear”, you’d never get elected on the issues!

Huge media advantage? You conservatives have been spending an average of 400 million a years “branding” liberalism as bad, and you *own* most of the media outlets. They are largely corporate wingnut establishments. What, you actually thought the media was “liberal”? BAHAHA, you really are st*pid!

As for winning elections on a regular basis? BAHAHAHA, You should ask that about your Conservative party! They can barely hold either house for more than a few years at a time. So why can’t the Conservatives win elections on a regular basis? Because you’re out of touch with American values?

They left their base, and in return the base left them. Oh, by the way, the name calling thing. Take a pill dude or something.

    Krazny,

I didn’t like Keith Olbermann when he was on ESPN, way before he jumped into politics. Oh, and you think the media is soft on Bush? His approval ratings would suggest otherwise. Just wondering, and its way to early for this crap for me, are you leaning any particular way for your choice for President in 2008?

  101. Katie says:

Oh how cute. A website to watch Keith and report on him. Kind of like the Newshounds site only there’s really nothing there. I bet Keith is quaking in his boots knowing this website is out there.

There isn’t a Republican talking head out there who can hold a candle to Keith Olbermann. And Keith does not claim to be reporting the “news”. But at least he doesn’t lie. And I love his talking point moments. They are usually pretty swift to the heart of the matter.

For the republican side I am hoping for either a Romney/Guiliani ticket or something equally bizzare that will turn off the values voters.

  103. COMMENT BY JIM says:

    Krazny

Interesting. I believe that the majority of people in the Republican party do want Hillary winning the Democrat nomination. That would offset, if your right, a flat ticket of Guiliani/Romney. Obama isn’t ready. Edwards is my pick to win the Dem nomination, that is unless Gore springs a suprise. On the other side, I’m really liking Romney better than two months ago. But I feel like the field isn’t complete on the Republican side either. Its just way to early for this stuff. The general election is a year and a half away. I wonder if we’d be discussing this if a democrat was Prez….. Man alive, There goes my “media liberal bias” theory again. Gotta go. Have a good evening.

After reading that, I don’t understand why “she” is so hostile to Hugo Chavez. After seeing him on various news outlets, he certainly can’t spend more than a couple of bolivares (the current exchange rate is $1 = 2147 VeB) on haircuts. (Of course, as far as someone’s smelling “sweeter” than VV, I can’t figure how “she” can make this determination, unless the TV–television, not transvestite*–has Smell-O-Vision.)

*Since this is valiantvenus being discussed, I felt it necessary to dispel any possible confusion with the abbreviation. I, for one, don’t believe that valiantvenus is really female. Valiantvenus could simply be some guy who likes wearing women’s attire while posting to sites such as this one, attempting to give some “female support” to his 1950s male-superiority conservative worldview. (I would suggest that when “valiantvenus” changes “her” moniker again, “she” might try one more truly reflective of “her” personality, maybe something like KillerKali or KKKKali.)

Jim, there’s so much wrong with your thinking, it’s hard to know where to begin. First, your premise that “liberalism is out of touch with Americans’ ideals” doesn’t square with polling. If you go to Pollingreport.com and click on “issues,” you will find that Americans are actually more liberal than they think they are. Secondly, if “liberal” is a bad word, one to be avoided, how did it get that way? By magic? People get their opinions from the media. If the media is liberal as you seem to think, I would think people would have a better opinion on that word. Did you happen to catch the first Repub and Dem debates? Williams first question to Dems: Are you people traitors?

Matthews first question to Repubs: How can we get back to Reagan’s “morning in America.”

Would you call the framing of those questions “liberal?”

  112. Bluedog49 says:

It’s hard to believe that in this day and age, people still harbor this opinion that the media is liberal. How could a liberal media not provide any dissenting voices on television in the runup to the Iraq War? Why would a liberal media marginalize and even ruin the careers of people who were correct about the war? Why would a liberal media have convinced close to 50% of the American public that Gore was a lying creep and Bush was a plain-talking regular guy with whom you’d like to share a beer? When Al Gore spoke out against the invasion in 2002, he was widely criticized and even mocked in the media. He was called “un-hinged”, “crazy” and a “traitor.” Jim, why would a “liberal media” behave that way?

  113. Bluedog49 says:

Rick, by using the term “fascist left,” which is a contradiction in terms, you only show us all what a moron you are. And then, you prove it by calling for the assasination of a foreign leader who is absolutely no threat to us. Now, this guy may be a threat to the profits of some of our corporations, but that’s another issue.

  114. knoxy says:

Bluedog49, obviously you are another fascist supporter of Chavez. The people of Venezuela will kill that fascist Chavez soon enough.

  116. Bluedog49 says:

Here Rick, let me spell it out for you:

Fascism: the merging of large private corporate money with government power, usually accompanied by a militaristic national message.

The Left: liberal, as in “the enlightenment;” as in the predominate mindset of most of our nation’s founders; as in “provide for the general welfare;” as in take care of your fellow man, etc.

Rick, I’m not sure where you got your ideas, but you need a good dose of history. The first thing fascists always do is purge the liberals. And, often, one of the first things dictatorial Communists do is purge liberals.

  117. JFlash says:

Must be bored – just read 115 comments here. Drudge was an early news aggregator, and often useful at that. But he abused the credibility gained by linking to a fair amount of timely, thought-provoking stuff by mixing in links to total garbage, and even worse his own posts of claimed news that most often were total fantasy.

Meanwhile, much better news aggregators have become prominent. Google News is excellent. Raw Story is pretty good. And if you want the real story of American politics with strong original reporting, Talking Points Memo is it.

Drudge is the equivalent of one of the many original search engines we’ve long forgotten – an early aggregator we will similarly soon forget, because other have come along later and done it so much better. As for Olbermann, he’s the brightest, most historically grounded, most insightful newsperson working in TV today. He does openly display his opinions, but in a way which makes them easily distinguishable from the facts he reports – moreso than are the opinions of his many competitors who restrain their communication of them to raised eyebrows or knowing grins, while obscuring the nonetheless-existing and inevitable biases in their stories, rather than being clear on their biases so the viewers can separate them out.

I’m sure you have lots of examples to give us since you’re obviously not blowing this out your ass. And, for our entertainment, you’ve come up with a new, hairbrained construct: the difference between “leftists” and “liberals.” Can you provide a citation for this nuanced position, or is this just something else you made up?

Hey Joe: You lose all credibility when you resort to calling libs “America haters.” You don’t know a damned thing about what Chomsky or any lib feels about our country other than that we don’t approve of what Bush & Co. have done in our name. We love America more than you could ever imagine, apparently. What irks you is that we don’t constantly harp on and on about America being the greatest country in the world, but instead think America can do better. I guess you don’t think we can do better, since you and the rest of the right are so satisfied with the status quo, as long as that means that Standard Oil is making record profits. And as for anyone caring for Fidel or Hugo being “strange in the head,” well, at least for Hugo, he won a majority of votes in a democratic election, and even Fidel, whether you choose to accept it or not, has a lot of support from Cubans in Cuba. It’s nice that you’re able to diagnose them all as nuts from the comfort of your probably plush retirement digs in Anytown, USA, without knowing a whit about what their day to day lives are like, with or without Castro and Chavez. Perhaps they’re just sick of the crap, starvation and little hope of ever pulling themselves out of the poverty that the wealthy corrupt corporatists were happy to impose on them for so many generations, and as bad as Castro & Chavez may be, they’re at least better than how things used to be.
