The FBI and a federal grand jury are currently investigating how, in 2000, “Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) jacked his house off the ground, inserted a new first story and placed the old first floor on top, thanks to the help of a top executive at local oil company Veco Corp. who hired at least one key contractor to complete the feat of a job.” Two former Veco Corp. executives recently pleaded guilty to federal bribery and conspiracy charges, which includes paying $242,000 in illegitimate consulting fees to Stevens’ son, Ben, a former Alaska state senator.
“jacked his house off the ground, inserted a new first story and placed the old first floor on top…” – - That’s taking “money under the table” to a whole new level … and on several levels.
May 29th, 2007 at 5:05 pmYou know, I heard Bill Clinton jacked his house off the ground, inserted a new first story and placed the old first floor on top too.

NICE!!!
May 29th, 2007 at 5:09 pmI guess he just couldn’t let that old first story go eh?
May 29th, 2007 at 5:09 pmThere’s always money in the banana stand.
May 29th, 2007 at 5:11 pmBill Clinton bribed Sen. Stevens son first, so that made it OK.

May 29th, 2007 at 5:16 pmIt almost sounds like the melting of the permafrost made his home unstable, and he had to re-do the foundation.

May 29th, 2007 at 5:18 pmI sure am glad that Bill Clinton breathes, otherwise the rest of us would have no excuse for doing so.

If a democrat wins the presidency in 2008, will everybody that says statements like these refrain from using statements like “Bush did it”???
May 29th, 2007 at 5:23 pmTed Stevens home is MADE OF TUBES!!!
May 29th, 2007 at 5:27 pmSee ya Ted, it was nice knowing you.
Ahhh, Senator Earmark get’s his comeuppance.
May 29th, 2007 at 5:27 pmtimmy,
I would hope so. I would hope we could grow up and keep individuals responsible for their own actions.
The “Clinton did it” defense is another way of saying two wrongs are ok. It’s not ok.
May 29th, 2007 at 5:30 pmYou have got to be kidding me….
Although I was in the commercial side of architecture – if I ever had a client who wanted to do this sort of crazy thing, I would have talked him out of it. Just shows how reality is optional to conservatives with other people’s money to spend…

Touche’!
Just imagine how much worse it’s going to be when it’s a two-story house he’ll be trying to jack up for the next round of melting. Tower of Babel anyone?

I agree, but I’m am sure if Obama wins and gets scrutiny from the right over something he did wrong people here will be screaming “well Bush…”.

Funniest thing I’ve seen all day! LOL!
May 29th, 2007 at 5:42 pmtimmy,
I think you’re right. However, I will do it to make a point through irony. I would make an attempt to remind of the stupidity of that argument.
May 29th, 2007 at 5:48 pmIf a democrat wins the presidency in 2008, will everybody that says statements like these refrain from using statements like “Bush did it??
Yes, unless they commit a crime or try to destroy the US Constitution. Then they will say “Bush did it too”

You may well prove correct. But at the moment, it’s a hypothetical, right?
May 29th, 2007 at 5:53 pmUnbelievable,
I’m still waiting for that picture.
May 29th, 2007 at 5:58 pmIs that the stairway to nowhere?
May 29th, 2007 at 6:19 pmTHIS TOTALLY CORRUPTED HIGH CLASS SWINDLER AND HOODLUM HAS

What — he needed to make room for all those additional “tubes” needed for the internets that were being taken up by Netflix subscribers?
May 29th, 2007 at 6:32 pmJimbo Dude, what’s with all the shouting?
May 29th, 2007 at 6:33 pmYou may well prove correct. But at the moment, it’s a hypothetical, right?
Comment by KRank
Yes it is purely hypothetical, however I believe in politics it is human nature when backed into a corner to point out that others have done it too.
May 29th, 2007 at 6:53 pmRe #29
“it is human nature…”
Perhaps. but bush and co have gone waaaay beyond “human” nature.
May 29th, 2007 at 7:16 pmunbelievable
Lifting a house and adding a new first story is not only common but in many cases a great, cost effective idea (not that I defend Stevens in any way) but it is a viable strategy for some remodels.
May 29th, 2007 at 7:43 pm#31 – Ginko,
May 29th, 2007 at 8:01 pmWhat if it is built on a slab and has an indoor pool? There was a joker in north Dallas, about 1965, who did just that and ended up about half a million poorer and with a pile of rubble.
That is exactly the plan we have for our house!
May 29th, 2007 at 8:19 pmIt is done all the time here in the totally overpriced Bay Area. This will make my $389K house in to a $750K house, We can add a huge living room, a giant kitchen, and another bathroom at least. Making all the existing rooms on the existing floor into bedrooms… Since our house is wood frame construction, and was already raised about 4 ft in the 50s, I have no qualms.
That is if the economy doesn’t tank to the point that we can’t sell it!
This house is our hope for a leg up into the exalted ranks of people who can afford health insurance, vacations etc… wish me luck!
Methinks Mr Stevens needs to be put away.
Now, if we could only find a competent, willing attorney general or assistant to achieve that.
Oh, Oh.
May 29th, 2007 at 8:20 pmStevens added a bridge to his home. Where it goes, no one knows.
May 29th, 2007 at 8:24 pmWalt
LOL, well… like I said, in SOME situations.
Sounds like that clown wasn’t one of ‘em.
May 29th, 2007 at 8:39 pmLots of historic homes here in town and not much spare open space, so you see it often here. Often the structures were very well built and raising them is a great option that preserves open space.
shlomo, that was funny
May 29th, 2007 at 8:42 pmHis home was renovated as part of a payoff to the Senator from the OIL company, so the FBI better figure that out fast.

May 29th, 2007 at 10:09 pmOoooh, I hope he wears his Incredible Hulk tie for his Perp-walk photo.
May 30th, 2007 at 3:44 amChrist, will someone throw these criminal sonsofbitches in jail already?
May 30th, 2007 at 10:01 amHow dare anyone accuse Sen. Stevens of being a crook. He just got a favor that any other red blooded American would get from an Oil Company big wig. I mean come on, it’s not like he doesn’t make enough money to pay for it himself. You liberals are just jealous because he got a new two story home rather than stay in the one he had. If a politician can’t take a bribe, I mean, donations from a friend, what’s the world coming too. I personally believe Sen. Stevens when he says, “I am not a crook”, or to paraphase President Nixon, “I am not a crook”.
Everytime a Republican pads his pockets, liberals start claiming they are crooks. I mean what’s up with that? You mean a elected official can take an honest bribe anymore? What ever happened to the good ole days, when only half the guys in Washington were on the take. Now a days they pretty much all are on the take.
