Gore would have voted ‘no.’

By Nico Pitney on May 29th, 2007 at 10:40 pm

Gore would have voted ‘no.’

“Former Vice President Al Gore tells ABC News that if he were still in the United States Senate, he would have voted ‘no’ on a war funding bill without a timetable for U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq which passed both house of Congress last week and was signed into law by President Bush.” Good for him.

  6. brewski says:

Al Gore has been consistent in opposing the Iraq War. Most of the announced candidates can’t say that. He has also been consistent for 30 years in his voicing concern about global warming. His continued efforts are now paying off with overwhelming support for change from business, other nations and across our own political parties. The naysayers are quickly becoming irrelevant.

    I agree.

On Countdown Gore said practically the opposite, by attempting to justify and condone what Pelosi and the rest of the the Democrats did by voting to keep the funds going for the war.

And where were you, Mr. Gore, before the vote? Were you out front, yelling with the top of your voice to stop the war? Were you leading the cry to put impeachment back on the table?

    WELL, WERE YOU???

Sorry, Mr. Gore, but unless you put your political butt on the line and stand up for peace, and doing what is right and necessary to restore America, you’ll get no support from me.

  14. brewski says:

Gore did speak out, and often. Do your research. It took me only 30 seconds to find these excerpts from a speech Gore gave on September 23, 2002 …

“Nevertheless, President Bush is telling us that the most urgent requirement of the moment – right now – is not to redouble our efforts against Al Qaeda, not to stabilize the nation of Afghanistan after driving his host government from power, but instead to shift our focus and concentrate on immediately launching a new war against Saddam Hussein. And he is proclaiming a new, uniquely American right to pre-emptively attack whomsoever he may deem represents a potential future threat.”

“Moreover, he is demanding in this high political season that Congress speedily affirm that he has the necessary authority to proceed immediately against Iraq and for that matter any other nation in the region, regardless of subsequent developments or circumstances. The timing of this sudden burst of urgency to take up this cause as America’s new top priority, displacing the war against Osama Bin Laden, was explained by the White House Chief of Staff in his now well known statement that ‘from an advertising point of view, you don’t launch a new product line until after labor day’.”

“By shifting from his early focus after September 11th on war against terrorism to war against Iraq, the President has manifestly disposed of the sympathy, good will and solidarity compiled by America and transformed it into a sense of deep misgiving and even hostility. In just one year, the President has somehow squandered the international outpouring of sympathy, goodwill and solidarity that followed the attacks of September 11th and converted it into anger and apprehension aimed much more at the United States than at the terrorist network – much as we manage to squander in one year’s time the largest budget surpluses in history and convert them into massive fiscal deficits. He has compounded this by asserting a new doctrine – of preemption.”

That was five years ago. How about while Congress was debating passing the Military Commissions Act? How about when Pelosi and Conyers took impeachment off the table? How about when Congress debated funding Bush’s surge?

Yes, I’m miffed at the non-stop side-show posturing.

Both the Reich-wing Republicans and the Democratic Party are supporting this illegal war. There’s too much Profit in it for them to walk away.

Actually, dear heart, according to the author, the male protagonist was, in fact, based on Gore and his friend, Tommy Lee Jones. Since everything that Gore has said on this issue has been entirely truthful and accurate, you are striking out once again.

mikey confuses Socratic method with asking stupid questions… Don’t hold your breath for any substance. If you have a five-year-old of your own, you could let him or her talk to mikey.

  33. JPark says:

All you have to do to know that the righties are skerrrrrrred of Al Gore is to look at this thread. They rip on him for not really going out on a limb (yeah, you beefy) but in reality he stated exactly what he would do if he were in Congress. You know, righties, you don’t HAVE to take roll call when you are not in the Senate anymore. Just ask Freddie Thompson. Your idol didn’t take a stand one way or the other. Be proud.

  34. TerrytheTurtle says:

I can only conclude that mikey is completely fascinated with Greg Palast’s almost completely ignored reporting in the wake of Florida 2000 (not even F9-11 did it justice) , or his Mom has revoked his computer time…. do ask if any of the long words need a definition won’t you mikey? We can discuss the more advanced techniques of ‘caging’ alluded to by Monica ‘God talks to me too’ Goodling this past week when you’ve grasped the general concept of ‘voting while black’ voter suppression. Til tomorrow & that’s not Al Gore under your bed, mikey, it’s just a dust bunny, OK?

He can be a leader, put some spine into Congressional Democrats and insist on changing the course of history.

Instead, he’s sitting on the sidelines like a 3rd string quarterback, hoping he’ll get to play in the last 2 minutes of the game and be the hero.

I agree with Gus Smith, the rest are hanging by their own rope. He is wise, in this climate, to do the opposite. And possibly give us some hope, ’cause Kucinich isn’t going to make it…..:-(

  54. Kate Henry says:

I love Al Gore dearly and think he would make a great president, but he still needs to learn how to talk to the public. I saw him last night on Keith Olbermann and I have to say that my eyes started glazing over. The man is so intelligent and everything he says is very relevant, but he needs to learn how to talk to the people rather than give a lecture in a lecture hall. If he does run again, I hope he gets someone to coach him in how to talk to the people. He does great when he’s talking about Global Warming, because that is his passion. He needs to bring that passion into other aspects of his thinking if he is going to run for president.

  55. Kate Henry says:

“algore proves once again why he failed to carry even his home state of tennessee. thanks for reminding us all algore!”

They troll, this is so yesterday. Can’t you come up with something new and original. Next you will be saying that Al Gore claimed to have invented the “internets”.

I do have to say that sometimes you trolls make me laugh with the stupidity that comes out of your mouths.

Please tell me, troll, how Al Gore could possibly lose. He won in 2000. Now can you see anyone who voted for him in 2000 voting for any RepubliCON? Can you see any independent voting for any RepubliCON? And I know quite a few RepubliCONS who will not vote for another RepubliCON until their party is wrested from the control of the neoCONS. There is no way that Gore could lose.

  56. lonesomerobot says:

Very well said. I wrote a lette to Olbermann telling him the same thing. I had to replay his responses a half dozen times in order to get an inkling as to what he was talking about. He also said to Olbermann that he disagreed with Cindy Sheehan but at the end of his response said that the facts and the policy seemed to be more relevant in the past than they are today, which was pretty much the point that Mrs. Sheehan was attempting to make. Gore has to engage less in obfuscation by speaking in a much more clearer way to the general public.
