Medical Expert Debunks Dobbs Report Tying Immigrants To Leprosy

In April 2005, CNN’s Lou Dobbs aired a report by CNN correspondent Christine Romans about how the “invasion of illegal aliens is threatening the health of many Americans.” Romans claimed, “There were about 900 cases of leprosy for 40 years. There have been 7,000 in the past three years.” Dobbs responded, “Incredible.”

CBS later found that there had actually been 7,000 cases in the past 30 years, and “nobody knows how many of those cases involve illegal immigrants.” When 60 Minutes host Lesley Stahl confronted him on this error, Dobbs simply replied, “If we reported it, it’s a fact.” Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2007/05/dobbsjourn.320.240.flv]

Barely 24 hours after 60 Minutes exposed his leprosy figures as inaccurate, Dobbs reiterated his support for Romans’s report saying, “We don’t make up numbers, I stand 100 percent behind what you said” and invited her to report the freshly-debunked figures once more.

The New York Times found, however, that Dobbs’s reporting is still not based on facts. The Director of the National Hansen’s Disease Program, James Krahenbuhl, verified the 60 Minutes report:

The official leprosy statistics do show about 7,000 diagnosed cases — but that’s over the last 30 years, not the last three. [...]

“It is not a public health problem — that’s the bottom line,” Mr. Krahenbuhl told me. “You’ve got a country of 300 million people. This is not something for the public to get alarmed about.

Despite such a public and complete rebuke, Dobbs, Romans, and CNN have all refused to issue a correction. You can urge them to do so HERE

UPDATE: On Friday, the Southern Poverty Law Center will be hosting a live webchat about this controversy.

Transcript:

STAHL: Well, here’s what they say about you. That you distort the figures, that you exaggerate, and you aim to inflame just to get ratings.

DOBBS: Oh, really?

STAHL: Yes, really.

DOBBS: That’s fascinating, because what I can’t understand is why other journalists would not take on the issues of free trade, illegal immigration, outsourcing, all of these rather sexy topics… (CROSSTALK)

STAHL: I’ll tell — I’ll tell you why.

DOBBS: … which I’ve been covering for years.

STAHL: Reporters don’t take on issues, reporters report issues, and there’s a big difference there.

Do you think you’re a journalist?

DOBBS: Absolutely. I may be an advocacy journalist, but I’m a journalist.

STAHL (voice-over): One of the issues he tackles relentlessly is illegal immigration. And on that, his critics say, his advocacy can get in the way of the facts.

DOBBS: Tuberculosis, leprosy, malaria?

STAHL: Following a report on illegals carrying diseases into the U.S., one of the correspondents on his show, Christine Romans, told Dobbs that there have been 7,000 cases of leprosy in the U.S. in the past three years.

CHRISTINE ROMANS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Leprosy. In this country.

DOBBS: Incredible.

STAHL: We checked that and found a report issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, saying 7,000 is the number of leprosy cases over the last 30 years, not the past three. And nobody knows how many of those cases involve illegal immigrants.

(on camera): Now we went to try and check that number — 7,000. We can’t.

DOBBS: Well, I can tell you this. If we reported it, it’s a fact.

STAHL: You can’t tell me that. You did report it.

DOBBS: Well no, I just did.

STAHL: How can you guarantee that to me?

DOBBS: Because I’m the managing editor. And that’s the way we do business. We don’t make up numbers, Lesley, do we?

STAHL: I’m sitting here saying to myself, this man runs a news show?

L. DOBBS: I do.

STAHL: And you can just tell me you don’t like the president. Whoo.

L. DOBBS: I, matter of fact, insist that the audience know where I come from.

STAHL: What about fair and balanced?

L. DOBBS: I’ve never, Lesley, found the truth to be fair and balanced. I’ve found it to be…

STAHL: But, that’s — but wait, what’s the definition of journalism? That — that’s in there. That has to be part of what a journalist is, is fair and balanced.

L. DOBBS: I truly believe there’s a non-partisan independent reality…

(CROSSTALK)

STAHL: But it’s your reality.

L. DOBBS: It is my reality.

STAHL: But it’s not the reality.

L. DOBBS: Well, how so?

It’s interesting to see that accuracy in journalism is also one of the aspects of society that CompTROLLER V-1 is not concerned about.

#5 Hey, I was going to say that!

It’s true, leprosy is easily diagnosed and cured. It is caused by a bacteria that responds to antibiotics. This disease earned its reputation before the advent of antiobiotics. Trying to fear monger about it simply plays to ignorance. You might as well fear monger about head lice.

The bubonic plague is also easily treated with antibiotics.

DOBBS: Absolutely. I may be an advocacy journalist, but I’m a journalist.

Lou, you are confused. A journalist practices journalism:

    jour·nal·ism (jûr’nÉ™-lÄz’É™m) Pronunciation Key
    n.

    1. The collecting, writing, editing, and presenting of news or news articles in newspapers and magazines and in radio and television broadcasts.
    2. Material written for publication in a newspaper or magazine or for broadcast.
    3. The style of writing characteristic of material in newspapers and magazines, consisting of direct presentation of facts or occurrences with little attempt at analysis or interpretation.

A ADVOCACY JOURNALIST is nothing more than a propagandist and they disseminate propaganda:

    prop·a·gan·da (prŏp’É™-gān’dÉ™) Pronunciation Key
    n.

    1. The systematic propagation of a doctrine or cause or of information reflecting the views and interests of those advocating such a doctrine or cause.
    2. Material disseminated by the advocates or opponents of a doctrine or cause: wartime propaganda.

Lou, stop giving journalists a bad name.

Actually todays anti-war liberal notes that America doesn’t have enough money to solve all of the world’s problems, having friends is a good thing, and going in an turning an entire major religion against you is generally counter-productive in a world where other people matter.

Further, anti-war progressives learnt the most basic lesson of Vietnam way back, during Vietnam. You can’t force democracy. Democracy, as a system based on reasonably free choice, has to be the choice of the people.

Well, Mr. Gorton, many conservatives have extensively pursued a college education and have been successfull at it, including life-long learning. When inflammatory social leftist speak dominates the college system over a firm preparation for the rigors of the workforce, it’s not too much to wonder if you/your children are getting the education that was paid for. Learning encompasses all sides of the spectrum, not just deep-rooted social jargon.

    http://www.searo.who.int/en/Section10/Section20/Section2002_9880.htm

Leprosy has reduced by almost 90% over the last 20 years. Over 15 million cases have been detected and cured worldwide. About 0.3 million new cases were detected during the year 2005. At the beginning of 2006, the global leprosy prevalence was about 0.2 million cases. The South-East Asia Region accounted for about 60% of these cases.

    Comment by CaptainMantastic — May 30, 2007 @ 2:25 pm

Captain, welcome. Although you responded to Shane, could I offer a thought?

I don’t think anyone here (at least no one to be taken seriously) would argue that independent thinking is the exclusive domain of liberals.

What the statement reflects is a public persona built on the images of prominent conservative figures who seem to embrace a fortress-like mentality on so many issues and a political machine that clearly values loyalty and conformity to message above comptence and truth.

On a deeper level, the hallmark of a true liberal mind (as opposed to the cartoonish “liberal” straw man that right-wing figureheads like Rush or O’Reilly promote) is one that values wide-ranging possibilities of thought. It’s the foundation of the “liberal education” on which this nation was built. It’s the foundation of “western liberalism” that even conservatives would like to see take root in Middle Eastern cultures.

Conservatives can absolutely value independent thinking. I cheer when I see them do so. because that means that we can actually have a conversation about issues that matter.

Unfortunately, not many of the conservative posters here fall into that category. I hope you stick around and contribute.

  52. Jim says:

Hey valiant venus, I live in San Diego too. For the most part, the “problems” with illegal immigration have little to do with immigration status and everything to do with poverty. Guess what, they’re the underclass of our town. It wouldn’t matter if they were Whites from Oklahoma, because the problems would still be the same.

You have to also remember that the biggest source of revenue for the state is sales tax, not income tax. They pay the taxes regardless of immigration status, and they’re prohibited from receiving state benefits.

And even with that, when was the last time someone in San Diego got leprosy? Never. Do you want to do an archive search at the Union-Tribune or should I?

  53. Bruce Gorton says:

    CaptainMantastic

Just because we are anti-war doesn’t mean we are anti-action. There are other things one can do, including working towards emancipating the foreign worker by secretly funding unions, setting up strong universities to educate young Muslims, putting forward the idea of the small being important.

Don’t buy goods made using child labour. Boycott companies that dodge labour laws by going to countries where they can treat their workers worse. Make America’s principles above reproach by being above reproach.

The big trick is to be subtle, the unions must fight for the workers, not their financial backers, the universities must teach the truth, not their backers’ doctrine, the small must always come first because ultimately that is what Western idealism is all about.

We need to recognise that the west, much as though the right tries to imply the opposite and then prove themselves right whenever given the chance, is not degenerate. Our idealogy is based on the strong protecting the weak, on strength being more a reflection of what you make, then what you break.

We note the difference between having the power to do whatever we want, and the strength not to if it harms those around us. We respect strength, we are suspicious of power.

Now if THAT isn’t a self-absorbant, self-justifying, unreal, rationalization by an apologist for what needs to be CHANGED in this country, I’ve never heard it!

And, in my time, I’ve heard LOTS of rationaliztions by folks (like Lou Dobbs, who, unlike YOU is the TOPIC of this thread) who whined about, misrepresented, dinigrated, and flat-out LIED about, the progressive changes I supported and fought for.

So OFF of YOU as the topic, little troll, I told CNN the following:

There have NOT been 7,000 cases of leprosy in the last 3 years. It was in the last THIRTY years!

And NO ONE knows what portion of those cases were undocumented workers. (If being undocumented is against the law, we should CHANGE the law! If nothing else, so that Lou Dobbs will have to stop calling them ILLEGAL with a lynching, psychotic gleam in his eye!)

  61. Bruce Gorton says:

    hterrya

There is a contingent of “conservatives” who are actually liberals who don’t know what liberalism is really all about.

They do not realise that liberalism is about trying to change the world for the better, that it isn’t so much a single set of ideas, as a profound mix of ideas covering the full spectrum of human experience.

They think liberalism they think political correctness, in the extreme sense it was perverted to by petty power pushers rather then the true sense it was intended to be, namely simply being civil.

They think that they are conservatives, who disagree with some issues like creationism being given the same credence as evolution, or gay people having the right to get married, or even social issues which they rarely think about – but in truth when injustice is done and they know of it they will march shoulder to shoulder with any liberal to see that injustice corrected.

They think that we are in favour of promiscuity, when really when you get right down to it we are in favour of people minding their own business when it comes to other people’s sex lives. Frankly, I don’t care about what President Bush does in his bedroom and I would rather not see the pictures, and when you get right down to it, on a case to case basis nor do these “conservatives.”

They disagree with us on a lot of issues, and so do other liberals. Katy and I basically disagree on the Greens, I feel voting for them is a good option if you do not believe either of the big parties will take your concerns seriously, she would rather not risk the Republicans putting in another GW Bush.

So when you deal with a conservative being polite and reasonable, recognise that you could be dealing with a liberal who just doesn’t realise that he is a liberal.

I don’t tolerate being lied to, I don’t treat people who come on here simply to bandy insults well and people who don’t have their own opinions but rather rely on talking points annoy me every bit as much as people who quote philosophers at me.

But when my first experience of a “conservative” is one of him being genuinely polite, I will reason and argue. I enjoy arguing, it sharpens my mind and helps me shape my view of the world, after all I am as capable of being as wrong as the next man, and while I will stick to my guns until I am convinced that I am wrong, I can be convinced that I was wrong.

Saying that Americans should not be celebrating their heritage (Irish, Italian Festivals), Ann Coulter is the Right’s Michael Moore, and telling Randi Rhodes that Democrats want to spread personal wealth. The guy goes into La La Land when he’s actually on a point and then has an embarrassing moment, just like the one here. He really needs to get his shit in order.

  104. Paul in LA says:

Even this ‘correction’ is faulty. The 7,000 cases SUDDENLY appeard in 1985 — the year that the computer entry into the new database was completed.

That’s the only reason there is a 30 year statistic.

Consequently, there are NOT 7,000 diagnosed cases in the last 30 years. There are 7,000 total entries into a database drawn from every state, and those cases may have been diagnosed twenty or thirty years earlier (the listing is theoretically of surviving victims of the disease).

Transmissibility of Hansen’s disease is JUST ABOUT NIL. Patients taking the course of antibiotics (generally two drugs simultaneously) become non-contagious within days. It is NOT transmitted by air, and in fact reguliar intensive PHYSICAL contact generally fails to transmit the disease. Something like 90% of all persons are naturally immune to the disease in any case.

Lou Dobbs is a RACIST. His theories of racial purity, his view of America as being a VOLK — with a unique culture threatened by immigration — rather than a liberal democracy founded on law, is basic to racist models.

“The nation was not a citizenry defined by common political rights and duties, but rather a Volk defined by a common cultural heritage…German racist thinkers in the twentieth century simply carried [the philosopher] Herder’s views to their ugly, caricatural extreme when they advocated purging society of elements declared alien according to the criterion of culture conceived as a natural attribute.” (Anchor, The Enlightenment Tradition)

I live in Los Angeles, probably the most integrated city in the world. Only the RACISTS pose a problem for our society. The Latinos who have ALWAYS been here (for 400 years at least) are not the problem, but shutting the border has FORCED THEM TO STAY HERE RATHER THAN RETURN HOME AFTER MAKING SOME MONEY.

The rightwing racists like Dobbs have made our situation WORSE.

    Why isn’t that surprising.

I appreciate that Paul however my question was directed to Zooey. I rather not debate you on any of the immigration subjects Paul since the facts that I see disagree with your statements above. Now regarding various diseases. There are immigration laws that compel legal immigrants to receive a basic medical inspection (they have to pay for it).

    What do medical examinations include?

Physical examination: Applicants are required to have a physical examination (to include complete disrobing), and a mental status evaluation

Tuberculin (TB) skin test: All applicants two years of age and older are required to have a Tuberculin skin test (TST)

Serologic (blood) test: All applicants 15 years of age and older are required to have serologic (blood) tests for HIV and for syphilis. Applicants under age 15 can be tested for HIV or syphilis if there is reason to suspect the possibility of infection. Civil Surgeons and Panel Physicians are required to provide pre-test counseling to all applicants who take the HIV test. If you are found to have HIV infection, the Civil Surgeon must provide you with post-test counseling

Vaccinations: Most applicants need to show that they are current with all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. public health officials…

Illegal aliens receive none of these tests and many times receive care in hospitals as indigents. This care is later paid for by tax payers in elevated tax rates and inflation. Should an alien transmit TB to one of the citizens than another American becomes sick or injured and will have to pay for his or her own health care and live with any lingering effects.

Approx. 3000 US citizens are killed each year by aliens. Gangs like MS13 have invaded all of the states now. Nican Tlaca claim to be the, “True Owners of This Continent!” There are many other groups and their mission statements are essentially declarations of war.

Supporting legal immigration protects the immigrant and Americans.

I’ve written to CNN requesting he be fired, I suggest others with higher principles do the same until his vile, hate show is off the air!

Legal immigration is not the issue and if they are married that is the other way in. They might be in love for all we know? Illegal immigration represents a breakdown of law and order. Since they are married she is in and there is nothing illegal about that. If she scams him we all get hurt but it is still legal. There is still a waiting period but it is a formality.

Lots of business people (men and women) get mail order spouses and this amounts to a sort of indentured servant sort of relationship. Nannies from England, Ireland, Africa, etc. are all indentured servants but they get in at the end.

“I rather not debate you on any of the immigration subjects Paul since the facts that I see disagree with your statements above.”

Yeah, that’s the problem with scientific facts, versus the BULLSHIT you are eating with a spoon.

As for “Approx. 3000 US citizens are killed each year by aliens,” what a surprise it would be to consider that in 2004, St. Petersburg Florida reported 4,051 murders. 3,000 murders would be a good year for St. Pete.

Since 99% of those ‘U.S. citizens’ are probably FELLOW GANG MEMBERS, the numbers you get from WorldNet Daily are the source of your argument, but not the source of your RACISM. That is found in your worm-eaten heart, in the place where you trade your contempt for yourself, for an outside enemy you can feel REAL PROUD attacking with all the teeth and squealing of an army of pigs.

Typical ad hominem attack and you offered nothing.

That was the king of ad hominem attacks. The 3000 may in fact be an adjusted part of Florida’s statistics? If illegal aliens were not in this country those 3000 people might not have been killed? Since you support the invasion you are responsible in part for the 3000 deaths based on your statment.

The Mexica-movement located at http://www.mexica-movement.org/ does not accept white or black members. They declare that the USA belongs to them and they are the Nican Tlaca.

MEChA subscribes to Mexica’s war declaration and indoctrinates Latino youth into the movement. They do not have non Nican Tlaca members and require Spanish (no whites or blacks need apply).

MS 13 is now considered The Most Dangerous Gang in America and consists of Salvadorans for the most part but accepts only Latino members. Their weapon of choice is the machete and they are in all states now. Search for “MS 13″ on Google, Youtube and there are endless images, videos and horror stories. Most are illegal aliens.

I mentioned that I didn’t want to debate with you and this is why. You have no debate to offer and your comment about those 3000 dead is inhuman. Rather than posting facts you go the ad hominem way over and over.

“Typical ad hominem attack and you offered nothing.”

Actually, that’s a characterization of the bullshit you are reading on Worldnet Daily. An ad hominem attack is on the person, not the argument. Your ‘facts’ are LIES. Just claiming you get them from some mystical source, or you are loathe to be confronted on your lies, is NOT going to pass muster.

“As for “Approx. 3000 US citizens are killed each year by aliens,” what a surprise it would be to consider that in 2004, St. Petersburg Florida reported 4,051 murders. 3,000 murders would be a good year for St. Pete.”

“That was the king of ad hominem attacks.”

Hilarious. You have no idea what you’re talking about.

“The 3000 may in fact be an adjusted part of Florida’s statistics?”

The point is quite obvious. Since St. Petersburg is not a gigantic city, and since there are 100s of similar sized cities in the U.S., a death toll of 3,000 people is a DROP IN THE BUCKET.

“The Mexica-movement located at http://www.mexica-movement.org/ does not accept white or black members. They declare that the USA belongs to them and they are the Nican Tlaca.”

So what? There are HUNDREDS of white supremacist websites to look at.

    Now you admit my point:

“MS 13 is now considered The Most Dangerous Gang in America and consists of Salvadorans for the most part but accepts only Latino members. ”

Gang violence against other gangs or other gang members is NOT representative of the vast number of migrants and immigrants who are here in the U.S., some with papers, some without. Your number pretends to be meaningful, but it is actually taken OUT OF CONTEXT by you, or where you got it from, in order to DECEIVE.

“I mentioned that I didn’t want to debate with you and this is why.” –Saywho

Yes, you are terrified that your lies will be thrown back into your face.

You’re a RACIST. Just admit that, and the rest of your argument falls naturally into what you would like to believe, or what your racist Rapepublican pals would like you to believe.

There is no debate you can bring and you choose to brand me with a label by calling me a racist. You can’t prove that claim and I deny it. Prove that I’m what you claim I am since you are willing to make that assertion otherwise you used another ad hominem. Why do you despise the Constitution of the United States of America and its wonderful Bill of Rights Paul?

  123. prof shropshire says:

Compiled statistics reveal that Hansen’s disease (leprosy) is rare in the U.S. There are currently approximately 6,500 cases; about 3,300 require active medical management.
