Rove-Protege Tim Griffin Resigns As U.S. Attorney

The Arkansas Times reports that the controversial U.S. attorney in Arkansas, Tim Griffin, has resigned:

The U.S. Justice Department has notified Arkansas’s congressional delegation that Interim Eastern District U.S. Attorney Tim Griffin is resigning effective Friday, June 1.

Griffin, a former protege of Karl Rove, was formerly research director of the Republican National Committee. In 2004, BBC News published a report showing that Griffin led a “caging” scheme to suppress the votes of African-American servicemembers in Florida.

Griffin became the poster boy for the politicization of the U.S. attorney process. Former Justice official Kyle Sampson noted that getting Griffin into office “was important to Harriet [Miers], Karl, et cetera.” The traditional 120-day term for “interim” U.S. attorneys had expired for Griffin on April 20, yet the Justice Department continued to allow him to serve.

ThinkProgress earlier spoke with Rep. John Boozman’s (R-AR) office, which said that the congressman submitted names of replacements for Griffin to the White House on March 30. So far, no word from the Justice Department on the name of the new U.S. attorney.

In the meantime, assistant U.S. attorney Jane Duke will take over. The Justice Department had previously passed her over to install Griffin, using sexual discrimination as an excuse because Duke had been on maternity leave at the time.

UPDATE: Today the Wall Street Journal reported that Griffin was in “discussions” about working for the possible presidential campaign of Fred Thompson. But the Arkansas Times reports that it’s still unclear whether he will join a campaign or go into the private sector.

UPDATE II: Raw Story has Sen. Mark Pryor’s (D-AR) reaction to Griffin’s resignation here.

Digg It!

Well Mr Conyers, Tim will now have more time on his hands to discuss his ‘caging’ activities on behalf of Karl Rove now. Over to you Greg Palast:

Think he had a rewarding judicial experience? Think he’d like a DO OVER and a new batch-o-friends? LOL

  5. PTF says:

Boozman has already recommended 3 people.

One of them, Betty Dickey, ran against Senator Pryor for the Arkansas State Attorney General slot in 1998. She lost.

Guess who ran her campaign? Tim Griffin!!

Appointing Griffin to the US Attorney job was like appointing James Carville to be a US Attorney. Both were lawyers.

  6. Litz says:

I wonder if there is any truth to the rumor that he resigned to work on Fred Thompson’s campaign.

  7. profmarcus says:

according to raw story, he’s going to work for the fred thompson campaign… good riddance…

“His departure from the US Attorney Office for the Eastern District of Arkansas is a positive development and the Senator is looking forward to having credible leadership restored there,” said Michael Teague, spokesman for Senator Mark Pryor (D-AR), of reports that interim US Attorney Tim Griffin had been approached to join Thompson’s campaign.

let’s see how fred uses him to jimmy the election in his favor…

And, yes, I DO take it personally

  10. PTF says:

Little Timmy Griffin is in the Army Reserves.

    Has been since1996.

Yet little Timmy Griffin has only been on active duty for 10 months. 4 of those months spent in Iraq. 6 of those months spent in Kentucky.

That’s it. DURING A WAR. That keeps sending people back.

Sounds like little Timmy Griffin was getting some favoritism, no?

  11. Scooter Liddy says:

Wow, I can’t believe he actually resigned. That is saying something given the track record of Bush appointees staying long past the “last throes” of their effectiveness and credibility, e.g., Rumsfeld, Gonzales, Cheney, and yes Bush himself.

  12. FunMe says:

    They ARE running scared!

This FREAK of nature does not belong in our government, let alone the “Justice” dept.

I am glad they are jumping out of the GOP ship. They can run like Rove pigs … but they can’t hide!

    Living it and loving it!

  13. Doctor Lee in Atlanta says:

Good riddance to more bad rubbish.
Bush’s behavior and disregard of the US Constitution must be repudiated.
Impeachment must be on the table or future presidents will think they can do it too…

  14. john aravosis is a douche bag! says:

if thats the road thompson wants to travel then so be it. if he wants to associate himself with rove and the attorney scandal then thats alright with me. thompson is so old that he must not know there are such a thing as blogs. to his own demise of course.

  15. katy says:

    … but, but it’s not friday…

these things usually happen on news dump day…
    eh?

  16. anon says:

Are there any public records of his legal action in Iraq?

What was his level of involvement in the Arkansas Project (aside from the over a thousand subpoenas to Clinton administration officials)?

What is his relationship to Reed, Falwell, Gingrich, and Abramoff?

Did he work under Monica Goodling’s attorney, or Sara Ralston’s?

  17. yathink says:

Will he be investigated and indicted and prosecuted and jailed? That’s the real question. What did Karl know and when did he know it is another.

  18. the republic of stupidity says:

One more down, just hundreds more to go!

  19. Roket says:

BOOM!!! Dang, that was a big one. Wasn’t expecting that tree to fall.

Now why would an upwardly mobile attorney resign from such a lucrative position? To join an actors presidential campaign who not only is running for president but also played one on TV. I think not. Perhaps the leftover monies in the Libby Defense Fund can be transferred to the Griffin Defense Fund. Looks like he’s going to need it.

  20. Shane says:

It looks like Rove has picked his next campaign. It’s time to beware of Fred Thompson. The other Republicans would be wise to be afraid.

  21. OutSourced says:

I think it would be grossly inaccurate to describe Mr. Griffin as a “former” protege of Karl Rove.

  22. OutSourced says:

These guys aren’t scared. They are running a flexible plan. It includes things like “gumming to death” whatever they don’t want to face: Senate confirmation, EPA action mandated by Supreme Court decision, you name it. It includes making it harder to get at people like Susan Ralston, Kyle Sampson and Monica Goodling, and a coterie of other ex- and soon-to-be ex-federal employees. Challenging Karl Rove is like pulling a weapon on a SWAT guy; it makes his day. It doesn’t mean it will, but that’s how Karl sees it. So keep at ‘em.

  23. RUCerious says:

How bout he goes into the very private sector of cell block G.

  24. Paul in LA says:

“In 2004, BBC News published a report showing that Griffin led a “caging” scheme to suppress the votes of African-American servicemembers in Florida.”

The caging scheme did involve deployed soldiers, but it disenfranchized some hundreds of thousands of black Floridians, and others around the country.

When the VOTE FRAUD conspiracy with the DoJ comes out, THEN Bushco will go down in flames.

Impeachment? Not enough votes. Indictment? Flapping their gums won’t stop that, and there aren’t many more arms to twist.

America looks at Bushco with a dead serious unmoving eye. The nightmare will end, because the people have bent as far as they are going to go.

  25. Vato says:

They are going to try to package Fred Thompson as the new Ron Raygun.

  26. KLEER says:

I would bet we’ll see him as a judicial nominee, If Southwick falls – I predict Griffin

  27. Kate Henry says:

Good, now let’s get him in front of Congress to explain his caging schemes.

  28. Peter says:

So, what do you think the chances are that Bush will nominate a Democrat to replace him as a good-will gesture? … Yeah, I thought not.

Wouldn’t that be the buzz if the parties were reversed, though?

  29. ProgressivePatriot says:

He still participated in caging which is a felony. Lock the Bastard up at GITMO and make him squeal!

  30. Brighid says:

Thompson and Griffin–Rove’s protege–working together to steal the ‘08 election! How cozy. And, we thought we were going to be rid of Rove when Bush left. Not a chance. He’s going to try to salvage his bankrupt legacy as a political guru by keeping the GOP in the White House. This will be how he does it, using Fred Thompson and Tim Griffin as his vehicle, fueled by charges of “voter fraud” just as he did in 2000 Florida and 2004 Ohio.

  31. Karim says:

    Another one bites the dust.

  32. Michael says:

Griffin resigned because he was ordered to by Rove and Co., who realized that there was about to be an investigation by Conyers committee, or even possibly face Senate confirmation hearing. Then this whole caging business along with other Republican felonious actions would surface for all to see. It was not because Jimmy wanted to be Thompson’s campaigne manager. If Thompson associates himself with this trash, he is toast.
