The right wing is seething over the widely-circulated video showing Rachel Smith, the U.S. representative in the Miss Universe competition, being booed by an audience in Mexico after she fell during the evening gown competition. A sample of the outrage:
Michelle Malkin: “Yeah, we’re the nativists. Next, they’ll tell us the mob at the Miss Universe pageant was simply ‘doing the booing Americans won’t do.’ Will President Bush speak out against the treatment Miss USA received in Mexico?”
Sweetness & Light: “Let’s face it. Many Mexicans simply seem to hate the US. And yet they insist on coming here in droves. Why is that?”
Freedom Folks: “Neighbors? Unfortunately, and these are the lawn mower borrowing and never returning mooch neighbors that everybody hates to live next to.”

It’s a shame that Smith was booed, but we think she’ll manage to overcome this international scandal without (as Malkin suggests) President Bush “speaking out” in her defense. Instead, Bush should take a look at counterproductive U.S. policies that are breeding resentment in Mexico and around the globe. From the latest BBC/PIPA/WorldPublicOpinion poll from January 2007:
Mexican views of the US have remained consistently negative in recent years, with a slight majority (53%) seeing the US as a mostly negative influence in the world. Only 12 percent believe that the US is having a mainly positive influence.
The issue of US handling of the Iraq war earns the highest level of disapproval (80%), followed by a large majority (70%) that disapproves of the treatment of detainees at Guantanamo and other prisons. Two-thirds (67%) disapprove of the US on the issue of global warming… Four in five (80%) in Mexico view the US military presence in the Middle East as a destabilizing force.

Something I find disturbing is Americans will not own up to their country's failures. Even on TP, posters go to great lengths to say they can't be held responsible for the evil done by Bush. Well, excuse me, I think you can. To pretend one can't be held liable is just corporatist propaganda. And you don't even apply it to others. The US has no problem freezing national accounts based on the flimsiest of evidence.
Mexico has been invaded by America many times. Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California were all once part of Mexico. US Marines raided northern Mexico as recently as 1920.

Some of the booing might have had nothing to do with immigration or international relations at all.

When the American was booed, she was booed for answering her question in English and not Spanish.
I'm a lefty, but TP lately has been using some political communication tactics that have really disappointed me. I used to visit this site several times a day, but now I don't want to come here as often. This place has changed... I have to wonder about all the stories now. Miss USA was booed for ONE REASON. It was because she fell on her ass but she wasn't eliminated. She should have been eliminated.
Miss Mexico WAS eliminated but Miss USA returned to the stage in the following round. The Mexican people were somewhat perturbed at that and they expressed their displeasure accordingly - and rightfully so.
The USA was represented by a ditz who made the perfect statement about a floundering imperialist country led by an idiot. She fell flat on her ass.
Mexico booed because of the injustice in the judging. Not for political reasons.

I'm not sure why Americans demand to be loved. They enter a place. Threaten a government with all kinds of trade sanctions. Bribe public officials. (My father worked for a big company that lost out on several major contracts and was told it was because he couldn't meet the 'bribe' that the Americans had offered.) And then drive the local industries into the ground. What's not to love about behaviour like that?

I didn't watch it, but I heard that the contestant from Mexico didn't make the cut (despite not falling). In my friend's opinion - since the American did made the cut (despite falling), they gave her 'the business.'
Nothing more than that.
Presumably, if the lady from Mexico missed the cut and one of the other contestants had made the cut, despite falling, they may have booed one of them, too.
If someone else watched it and saw it differently, let me know.
Key to me is if they had a chance to boo her before she fell and did not boo her before that happened. That would tell me it was more competitive than political. Rude, but maybe not particularly political.

As the left tends to hold the ideals of honesty and telling people the truth fairly high, as a member of the media I have to say I am personally highly flattered by your esteem for my profession.
It is, unfortunately misplaced. The media, without adequate protections, is largely a profit based set of organisations which won't threaten their advertisers if they can help it. These organisations are largely conservative.
Further, sadly, with the unification under CEO management which is prevelant in mainstream mass media, the media is owned and largely controlled by conservatives who see profit as primary, and actually reporting the truth as being secondary.
It is thus why, the highly politically interested leftwing reporter who goes into Iraq, is sidelined in favour of Britney Spears shaving her head, or some overhyped prostitute dying and everyone wanting to know who the kid's daddy is. Editorial rises in importance and hard news shrinks.
Economists are given more credence on global warming then scientists who specialise in global warming, and the Free Market Foundation is actually accorded some respect despite the fact that its policies have never actually worked.

In addition, whenever Mexico tries to change its drug laws, the U.S. government intervenes and stops them. The 30-year war between the government and the drug gangs who supply Lindsay Lohan is what has caused the economic devastation in Mexico that:

The assertion that she getting booed is unfortunate is the only thing I truly take issue with, although the second half of your sentence rightly insists that as a "public figure" she ought to not only be subject to such criticism, but she furthermore has better access to the media than her booers which would allow her to speak out in her defense. So a simple first amendment public figure issue.
But calling it "unfortunate" implies to a certain extent that it was unwarranted. I wont go as far as to say it was warranted, but rather offer another layer to your argument.
The booing is not in the clip you showed above. It is later when after being in the final ten the Mexican candidate was rejected in favor of the USA candidate who fell. Like any sport there is a specter of playful national pride at hand, and certainly was the case here, but the fact that Miss Universe is run by Americans with American judges and the USA candidate wins, is certainly worthy of some criticism. But I wouldn't elevate it to the point of a conspiracy (I frankly don't have an opinion on who should have won because they all seemed similar to me), but can sympathize with the booing that took place. The real shame, if you watched the show, was in the lackluster performance by the hosts, particularly Vanessa Minnillo, whose attempts at speaking Spanish were difficult for me to watch; and the silly infomercials for different parts of Mexico (e.g. calling Chiapas Mexico's playground) shows total disregard for the richness of the culture, and instead limits it to a boilerplate label.
A lot more happened that night than Malkin or anyone else covers, but I suppose maybe it is me who is reading too much into things.

A 2002 study by Jim A. Kuypers of Virginia Tech, Press Bias and Politics, investigated the issue of media bias. In this study of 116 mainstream US papers, including The New York Times, the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and the San Francisco Chronicle, Kuypers found that the mainstream press in America tends to favor liberal viewpoints. They found that reporters expressed moderate or conservative points of view were often labeled as holding a minority point of view. Kuypers said he found liberal bias in reporting a variety of issues including race, welfare reform, environmental protection, and gun control.
The Kaiser Family Foundation survey in 2001 found that members of the media were four times as likely to identify themselves as "liberal" than as "conservative." Similarly, the survey found that members of the media were more than seven times more likely to identify themselves as "Democrat" than as "Republican." When I did research on the Mexican War recently, American officers were writing way back then that they couldn't stand to see how the Mexican elites treated the common people in their country. They said the Mexican elites enjoyed torturing the peasants as a pasttime. Just one example.
And let's stop spreading the Right's propaganda for them. Mexicans don't hate Americans because of what America does in Mexico, they hate us because La Raza tells them everything bad in Mexico is the fault of America. Ever watch the leader of that organization in an interview? He claims the problems of everyone in Mexico are the fault of every individual American and Mexicans should be free to enter the U. S. and do anything they want to make money here.

It always gets me how you Republicans think that that works in your favour. Here you have a profession which survives based on reporters knowing their subjects which is dominated by liberals, and you don't ask yourselves why.
Also, press bias is often in the eye of the beholder. A report on corruption in Congress, if it uncovers more corruption in Republican candidates, is going to get labeled as liberal. A report on a Republican congressman taking bribes, is going to get labeled liberal. A report on the success of just about anything government does outside of policework, or the military, is going to get labeled liberal.
If the base facts reflect badly on Republicans that is just the nature of the facts. I would say the same if they reflected badly on Democrats - they just don't seem to do so quite as often.

Bruce, if our media was as liberal as Eric seems to think it is, I would think more people would be aware of the fact that Reagan's policies made terrorism much worse. He not only sold them weapons, but he bargained with them. Then, he staged the worst "cut and run" in history in Lebanon which taught terrorists that they could make America back down.
A "liberal media" would also have made Americans aware of the fact that Reagan gave us the biggest tax increase in history. Instead, the "liberal media" has perpetuated the myth that he lowered taxes for everyone. Why would a "liberal media" act like that?

As to Iraq, I don't particularly, as a liberal, subscribe to the view that Saddam was a suitable ally to America, but seen as he was what America had, I don't actually see anything wrong with Rumsfeld shaking Saddam's hand. It signified an agreement was reached.
That he later used gassing the Kurds when he supplied the gas as part of his argument in favour of invading Iraq, that I find a bit offputting.

By 1943 Stalin's Russia was producing the bulk of it's own war materials and was consistently beating the German Wehrmacht on the battlefield (Stalingrad, the Kursk salient, the liberation of Leningrad, etc). It was from 1943 onwards that the allies began to realise the awesome potential of the USSR and tensions arose amongst them.
It wasn't the allies supplying limited arms and technology that caused this but Hitler. By invading and bruatalizing Russia Hitler breathed new life into Stalin's dictatorship. When the German army initially invaded Russia many people in different regions of the USSR greeted them as liberators. Their harsh rule caused the people to rally around Stalin who by this time had ended his purges and submereged his totalitarianism into an impassioned plea for the defense of 'mother Russia'. Stalin personally organised the defense of Moscow and oversaw the movement of vital industry deep into Siberian territory.
By 1943, when the USSR's Siberian factories were cranking out enough war materiel to supply themselves the worst thing a German soldier could be told was that he was being sent to the Eastern front. Millions of Germans were to die in the east in the most sustained, brutal fighting of the entire war (continuous head-to-head combat over a 4,000 km front from August 1941-until May of 1945 involving everything from tanks to bayonets). Prior to 'Operation Barbarossa' the code name given to Germany's invasion of the USSR Hitler had believed that the the USSR was:
'(R)otten from the inside out; one only has to kick at the door and the whole thing will fall apart'
Like Napolean before him he underestimated Russia's resolve, it's icy winter and the capacity of it's it's people to endure, reorganise and strike back.
It was the actions of Hitler's Germany - not FDR or his allies - that caused the rise of Stalin and the USSR. Like Japan's sneak attack at Pearl Harbour, Hitler's cruel excessive invasion of Russia didn't bring down a 'corrupt people' but instead, awoke a sleeping giant.

During the national costume contest they booed and gave thumbs down the entire time she was on stage. He said even mom’s with little kids were booing….great way to teach your young how to act Mexico! Then during the telecast, they booed her from the moment she introduced herself until it was over. It was dubbed over..besides the final question booing. He said it was horrible the way the booed her all night, everyone was just there for a good time, it's a beauty pageant for goodness sake...it's not like she' making foreign policy. So they didn't boo her because she fell on her butt, they booed her the entire time she was in Mexico. I’m not surprised she fell down she was probably mentally exhausted. During the entire show, she had applauses while on stage... even when she fell, she was CHEERED, yes CHEERED by the crowd!
Why was she booed? It's pretty simple: she shouldn't be among the finalists? Why? There was no doubt that Korea, Japan, Brazil and Venezuela should be there, so only one spot was left... The logic would say it would be for either Angola (beautiful girl with decent scores) or Mexico, the host country. Why USA? she didn't score that good and she fell, even her scores seemed little higher compared to other girls...
The crowd thought that it was unfair to have them in the last 5, and honestly looked like the judges put her there only because of the fact that Mr Trump/USA run the show.
I think that this situation was exaggerated by the media. Tabloid alike reporters who want to put something else in the news so they can sell it.
* Could some people boo Miss USA at some point during the contest? Yes, there's always ignorant people everywhere, no matter if it's Mexico, USA or Japan.
* Does Mexico hate the US? NO. Some Mexicans don't like the US as a country because of this country's way of pressure/ruling the rest of the world, but has nothing to do with the people. If a person is nice, it will be treated nice in most places, no matter of your origin.
Don't make this issue a political think, I don't think it is like that.

About 10 years ago, the pageant was held there and the classless Mexicans started booing when their ugly Miss Mexico did not make the Top 10. Everytime Miss USA came on the stage, the booing was so loud you could not hear the music or interviews. I think it is what gave Dick Clark a stroke. Mexicans are low-life, classless scum. I live in Texas where they have taken over. If they hate USA so bad, they should go back home where they belong. They can sit around and eat bean burritos and boo all day in polluted Mexico City!

Miss Mexico did not deserve the Top 5. Miss Angola, who was 6th, was absolutely beautiful also and probably should have done better. I do, however, think that Miss Korea should have won. She was one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen - and would have made one of the best Miss Universe's in a long time. Venezuela should have been runner up.
