Religious right spokesman blasts Mary Cheney birth.»

Stephen Bennett, a spokesman for the Concerned Women for America, reacts to the birth of Mary Cheney’s baby: “Heather Poe is Mary Cheney’s live-in lesbian lover. … Heather Poe is NOT the baby’s real parent. … If the Vice President and his wife Lynne are joining their daughter Mary in playing this homosexual game of ‘house,’ then all have chosen their roles and designated lesbian lover Heather Poe as the ‘Daddy.’ … We are all grown adults. Playing ‘house’ is a game for children, not for The White House or the Vice President and his wife.”

It’s about time the real bigoted religious right spoke up about this.

  2. KRank Says:

Wow. Did this guy get tongue-tied because the Vice-President is involved or is he just naturally incoherent?

And what the hell is Stephen Bennett doing as spokesman for Concerned Women for America?

What’s a GUY doing in an organization called Concerned Broads for The States??

  8. hellinabucket Says:

If Dick was true to his word he would verbally smack this man down. Remember how outraged Dick was when the subject of his lesbian daughter was brought up during the last election.

If Dick weren’t a Dick he’d stand up for his family and attack this man in true Dick fashion.

It’s not like he hasn’t told any to F%ck off before.

I’m telling you guys, these people are so nasty, even to their own because they all are carrying around a few thousand tons of “judgment” baggage (what you get from being holier-than-thou), “Jesus is coming” baggage (what you get from fear of eternal damnation for having perfectly human thoughts about sex), and “deprived” baggage (what you get from mentally living in some delusional fantasy world that contradicts with the actual reality that exists).

I don’t see why you couldn’t. I mean, there have been other times in the Judeo-Christian-Islamic history when people have started “their own branches of the club, so why not bring your religion into the 21st century by getting rid of all the backwards medieval minded members.

  35. CpnJustice Says:

#20, I agree. But the phrase, “homosexual game of house,” was more than pejorative, it was downright dehumanizing. The meaning behind it is clear: Gays and lesbians can’t have families of their own.

Years ago, the bigots claimed that we (gays and lesbians) were just after sex and running from responsibility and so should be ostracized, criminalized, and institutionalized (we were crazy!). But as soon as we appear to “blend in” to “normal” culture we’re declared public enemy #1 and unfit to be a part of “normal” culture.

It always has been Straight “culture” that has separated the LGBT communities from the rest of society, not the other way around. If our culture didn’t make such a huge deal about it, it wouldn’t be a huge deal to be a lesbian, gay man, or transgendered. No one wants to grow up feeling like society wishes you didn’t exist.

In “Losing Faith in Faith” by Dan Barker he talks about how his retired not-wealthy parents gave money to one of the Gold Digging TV Reverends, and that the guy had millions of dollars just sitting in the bank, instead of using them to feed poor people and build medical facilities…

That is why these people are inhumane. Anyone who makes another person feel ashamed for their sexual preference, skin color, gender, or other birth traits that they cannot control doesn’t deserved to be called human.

  49. ocdemocrat Says:

It’s probably been already said, but: Bennett and the Cheney’s deserve each other. And may they all eventually meet with good ol’ boy Jerry Falwell in Hell someday!

  50. Hypocrisy Says:

    go f yourself Stephen Bennett.

  51. Wally Says:

Enjoy your base, Mr. Cheney. I suppose Mary has accepted her second-class citizenship by now, but how’d you like to be Cheney? Hell, Harry Truman once threatened to kick a music reviewer in the genitalia for giving his daughter’s concert a bad review. You know Cheney wants to shoot Mr. I’m All Concerned about Women in the face or at least tell him to go f*ck himself, but the whole Bush admin is the wacko right’s bitch.

  52. The Unknown Democrat Says:

I thought I’d never ever ever see the day I defended Mr. Cheney. But this time I have to. Shame, shame, shame on the so called religious right for attacking Mary Cheney, her lover, the baby, and the Cheneys. These people have no decency at all. They would attack the man who has consistently stood with them and their bigoted ideas and now they attack his family. I know Cheney must be very upset at these guys. I hope he sicks the goon squad on them. The so called religious right wouldn’t know Jesus if the was standing next to them. They are all about hate, racism, and classism. I certainly hope they like the heat because they like Hilter, Stalin, and a lot of other people will burn in Hell forever. The sad part about it is that at least Hilter and the other knew it. These fools think they are going to Heaven.

  53. Zooey Says:

I feel sorry for that poor child, stuck in the middle of this shitstorm — and Heather Poe, whose position is most precarious.

  54. The Unknown Democrat Says:

Reply 51 has it right. I’m sure Mr. Cheney would like to drink a few beers and go hunting with these people. Then the next day he’ll have someone call to notify us of the hunting accident which happened yesterday. In this case I wouldn’t blame him for accidently shooting them in the face for attacking his daughter and her lesbian lover. Number 51 is also right about Mary being a second class citizen to the members of the Republican base. The Base, umm, where have I heard the word Base used to discribed an organization. Hey, isn’t that what the word Al Queda means in Arabic? Yes it does, it means “The Base”. I wonder why the Republican voters are also called “The Base”, makes you wonder doesn’t it?

  55. ytterbius Says:

Well, if we can’t get support to impeach him for real crimes, maybe this is our chance to get support to impeach him for supporting his gay daughter, and his grandchild.

  56. Ben Dover Says:

Isn’t it the Republic Party that screams about children needing to be raised in a “family?” Where is it written that a family has to consist of one male and one female? Or dont those myopic cretins get that?

  57. Zooey Says:

    Comment by Ben Dover

Wingnuts would rather see that child raised in an orphanage.

  58. KRank Says:

I wonder if we’ll hear Mary Cheney come out with both guns blazing in response to this “disgusting” attempt to use her private life for political gain?

  59. Professor Challenger Says:

Has anyone commented on the irony of a freakin’ dude being the spokesperson for CONCERNED WOMEN FOR AMERICA.

Not only don’t they think they should be trusted with a choice, they don’t think women should be trusted with a microphone.

    Prof. G. E. Challenger

  60. A. McEwen Says:

Bennett’s comments just goes to prove how much of a lie the supposed ex-gay movement is.

They claim that they are focused only on those who have problems with their lgbt orientations. But if you look, you will find that Bennett, Alan Chambers and all of the rest want to make hell for those of us who ARE comfortable with our orientations.

  61. david Says:

I’m not sure I understand this spokesMAN for Concerned Women of America. (BTW, what are they concerned about?)

There was another woman named Mary who gave birth to a child without a known father. That was 2000 years ago. And, although his step-father Joseph may have provided the child with a ‘traditional’ family, he seems to have dropped out of the narrative and he grew up mostly surrounded by women. It’s true that he grew up to be slightly effeminate and hung out with a dozen transient men with no fixed abodes. There was no need to worry about his orientation as he is recorded in one Gnostic Gospel of giving another Mary (of Magdalene) a hearty kiss on the mouth. This Mary may or may not have been a woman of the streets, but she was soon his personal assistant and made all the arrangements for his entry into Jerusalem and his going away dinner.

You’d think this spokesMAN would celebrate the similarities between the birth of Mary Cheney’s child and that child 2000 years ago. I hear that son turned out quite well. Perhaps this daughter might be the female messiah.

  62. theswan Says:

Is stephen bennent a woman? Or do women of this Woman’s Organization have no voice?
Reminds me of “all the boys” gathered around for the signing of “women’s internals” legislation .

rudepublicans have no world of their own. Their power fedish dictates that. Their male world, their war world.

  63. Beverly S. Hill Says:

And the chickens come home to roost.

Let’s see if Religious Right truly has the soul of their convictions and refuse to vote for the Republican Party next year!

    Don’t hold your breath!!

Plenty of children live in households where neither of the parents is the real parent. Why are these parents that adopt children playing house?

and of course there is the entire remarrying scenario too and having step dads and moms.

  68. david Says:

Unbelievable, you really are a caution. You were not amused by my tale. You do know the Messiah does not have to be a god or goddess. I’m just sorry Mary Cheney didn’t name her daughter Laxmi. That would be sweet.

  69. Zooey Says:

  70. Valiant Hermaphodite Venus Says:

    > Has anyone commented on the irony

Its not irony. Its right wing nutjobs creating fake groups to pretend they are an inclusive idealogy. Would you beleive that there is also a group called “concerned african americans” or something like that, whose board of directors is made up entirely of white guys? I think Al Franken talks about it in one of his books somewhere…

  71. Jay Randal Says:

Dick will probably have the spokesman iced, if you get my drift.

  72. trippin Says:

    Comment by KRank — May 30, 2007 @ 4:48 pm

My thoughts exactly. He’s a woman trapped in a man’s body perhaps?

  74. buckles Says:

By this sad b.s. logic, all adoptive parents aren’t really “parents”. Why can’t these people stay the hell out of other people’s lives? It’s none of his business who plays house… and in fact, I would say heterosexual couples do the most “playing” — just look at the divorce rates in this country.
