ThinkFast: May 30, 2007

The Bush administration is “nearing completion of a long-delayed executive order that will set new rules for interrogations” by the CIA. The order is expected to “ban the harshest techniques used in the past,” including waterboarding, “but to authorize some methods that go beyond those allowed in the military by the Army Field Manual.”

“More than a month after the Office of Special Counsel announced it will establish a task force to mount a government-wide investigation of alleged violations of the law that limits political activity in federal agencies, the group’s formation remains in the preliminary stages.”

“The Taliban has merged its propaganda and field operations with those of the global al Qaeda network led by Osama bin Laden,” enabling the Taliban to “develop from a xenophobic, home-grown Islamist movement into a more outward looking force that is helping to advance al Qaeda’s global interests.”

Activists say President Bush’s Darfur sanctions announced yesterday are “too little, too late.” The sanctions “target three people with suspected links to the violence as well as about 30 companies” in Sudan. “Three people? After four years? And not one of them the real ringleader of the policy to divide and destroy Darfur?” asked John Prendergast of the Enough Project.

The New York Times finds that some conservatives in Congress are “struggl[ing] to appease increasingly restless constituents” over Iraq. “I think this is the most expensive, stupidest thing ever done,” one Republican and former “staunch backer” of President Bush now says.

“Under increasing pressure from Democrats in Congress to increase the number of Iraqi refugees allowed into the U.S., the Department of Homeland Security says it has finally approved a process to weed out potential terrorists and admit as many as 7,000 Iraqis by Sept. 30, the end of the fiscal year.”

“Even ‘moderate additional’ greenhouse emissions are likely to push Earth past ‘critical tipping points’ with ‘dangerous consequences for the planet,’ according to research conducted by NASA and the Columbia University Earth Institute.”

Bush scolded opponents of the immigration reform legislation, saying they “haven’t read the bill” and are offering “empty political rhetoric.” Conservatives bristled at his remarks. “I don’t think name-calling does any good at this point,” said David Keene, chairman of the American Conservative Union. “No yelling and screaming by the administration is going to change our minds,” said another conservative.

“The United States is better prepared to deal with a major disaster like Hurricane Katrina, which devastated the Gulf region in 2005, but still lacks a formal structure for coordinating a national response, the head of the U.S. Coast Guard said on Tuesday.”

And finally: “You go to the club with the yacht you have…” Now that Donald Rumsfeld is no longer Defense Secretary, he has time for his “other hobbies” — skiing, squash, and yachting. He and his wife have joined the Miles River Yacht Club in St. Michaels, MD, which is “considered one of the more exclusive boating clubs on the Eastern Shore.” But the Examiner notes that Rumsfeld will likely do little yachting because his “membership is mainly for socializing.”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

Oh, there’s a formal structure in place, all right…here it is.

National Security Presidential Directive/NSPD 51 basically makes Chimpy Emperor in the event of “a catastrophic emergency”, which is defined rather sketchily as “any incident, regardless of location, that results in extraordinary levels of mass casualties, damage, or disruption severely affecting the U.S. population, infrastructure, environment, economy, or government function.”

With such a structure in place, I can imagine that the administration will find a reason to invoke it soon enough.

Off the subject, yesterday, many bloggers sent me questions about re-marriage and divorce. Below is my response to DRxJ and any other bloggers who had a question about this subject.

No offense, but my wife is quite the Christian, and believe you me, she is definetly not subservent (Hell, being vertically challenged, she’s got more of a chip on her shoulder then Dick Cheney…and that’s what I love about her. We can be challenged about certain aspects of Christianity, and ,you know, talk about said subject. Example: She doesn’t feel her best friend should go to Hell for being Jewish. We discuss. but according to you, I should beat her for questioning? Uh, no. Not if I prize my jewels, if you know what I mean)
    Comment by DRxJ — May 29, 2007 @ 7:54 pm

Once again DrxJ, she is not a christian. The definition of Christian is Christ-like. If she’s not following his guidelines, she is not being Christ-like, and, therefore, is not a christian. Two, I’ve made this statement before, she’s not your wife. She belongs to her ex-husband. She can only divorce her spouse, once she views him commiting adultery. Even then, she still can’t re-marry until he is deceased. Currently, she’s a adulteress and you’re a fornicator. You’re not married. Your relationship is equivalent to two individuals having an intimate relationship without being married. If you want to go to heaven, leave her now!!! I understand that she was abused, and no woman should have to deal with any form of abuse. But the bible states that she can separate from her spouse. They both need to attend marriage counseling to resolved his issue and mend their marriage. Find a single woman that hasn’t been married before. Listed below are scriptural texts for your to read:

    Mattew 5:
31″It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’[a] 32But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery.

    Genesis 2:
20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam [a] no suitable helper was found. 21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs [b] and closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib [c] he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman, [d] ‘ for she was taken out of man.”24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

    Malachi 2:
16 “I hate divorce,” says the LORD God of Israel, “and I hate a man’s covering himself [a] with violence as well as with his garment,” says the LORD Almighty. So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith.

    Matthew 19:
6So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery.”

    Mark 10:
11He answered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. 12And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”

    Luke 16:
18″Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

    Romans 7:
2For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage. 3So then, if she marries another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress, even though she marries another man.

    I Corinthians 7:
10To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband. 11But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife.

    Revelations 19:
9Then the angel said to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!’ ” And he added, “These are the true words of God.”

CO2 Emissions Down; Environmentalist Unemployment Up

Sad news for the global warming crowd, as US emissions of CO2 have actually dropped 1.3% in 2006, despite having an economy that grew 3.3% during the same year.

Which, I guess, means that Bush has saved the planet.

But what other effects will this have? I predict thusly:

    ——————————————————————————–

    * President Bush scraps plans for emergency Presidential escape rocket to Mars

    * Environmentalists stop talking about “climate change” and start talking about “fries with that”.

    * Dole company abandons Alaskan pineapple plantation complex.

    * Al Gore wept.

    * Skyrocketing sales of “I Told You So” T-shirts to climate change deniers.

    * “Kyoto” once again only notable for being an anagram of “Tokyo”.

    * Powerful computers used to model world climate switched to BitTorrenting pirated MP3’s.

    * South American rainforest ecosystems collapse as trees succumb to oxygen poisoning.

    * New York Times headline: “Bush Fails to Prevent Global Temperature Stagnation Crisis”.

    * Sheryl Crow back to twirling Charmin around her hand like spaghetti on a fork.

And even so, God allows us to divorce because we are not perfect. You seem to want to quote one side of the argument, but not the other. When does Jesus say “He who is without sin may cast the first stone”? Jesus not only forgives adultery, but will forgive it over and over and over again. Throughout the Gospels there’s a balance between seeking the ideal and forgiving the real. That’s what’s so depressing about your rants, you just don’t get the cryptic and riddling nature of Jesus’ teachings. You, Daryll, are a Pharisee; read Matthew 23:1-36 and Woe to you, hypocrite!

That’s what’s so depressing about your rants, you just don’t get the cryptic and riddling nature of Jesus’ teachings. You, Daryll, are a Pharisee; read Matthew 23:1-36 and Woe to you, hypocrite!

david, Paul said that he would rather that we be celebant, but if you have sexual lust than he would rather that you marry. I listed the following scriptures against divorce. Cease creating your philosophies. It states withing the bible that it is dangerous to alter/add to the word of God. Jesus only supports divorce if you catch your spouse committing an adulterous act. But you still can’t re-marry another woman until your spouse is dead. Per the scriptures listed, you’re bound to your spouse till death. Remember the vows, “To death do us part?” Please give me a scriptue where Jesus stated that re-marriage is supported. Also, listed below are scriptures on forgiveness. Jesus will only forgive if you sincerely repent, which means you truthfully refrain from commiting that specific sin. We’re not perfect, but as long as you mean it, he will forgive you.

For if you forgive people their trespasses [their reckless and willful sins, leaving them, letting them go, and giving up resentment], your heavenly Father will also forgive you. Matthew 6: 14

If My people, who are called by My name, shall humble themselves, pray, seek, crave, and require of necessity My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7: 14

    Very poor response.

The first one isn’t even a commandment. You just made that up.

The second doesn’t even mention rape. You just made that up too. And besides, it’s way too vague. It says not to desire anything that my neighbor has. So if my neighbor is having a moving sale, and wants to get rid of his brand new lawn mower instead of taking it with him, I’m not allowed to wish to own my neighbor’s lawn mower?

    Comment by Newt Gringo — May 30, 2007 @ 10:49 am

It’s not a commandment, but it’s widely covered in the bible. Also, no, you cannot covet thy neighbors lawn mower. Be thankful for everything that you currently have.

  74. gummitch says:

Darryl, you need to change your login to “clanging cymbal”.

    1 Corinthians 13

1If I speak in the tongues[a] of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames,[b] but have not love, I gain nothing.

4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 12Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Not seeing a lot of love, Darryl, just a lot of judgment.

  75. david says:

Newt, the prohibitions against rape are in Deuteronomy 22. I can understand why Daryll avoids this. It’s obviously case law and specific to the culture of 2500 years ago. (Although I have a Greek friend you said showing the wedding night bedsheets was still a custom in rurals areas as recently as 25 years ago.)

Daryll, like many in the Bush WH, has a problem with interpreting Law. He gets his knickers in a knot over things that are not a big deal. The Bushies don’t understand principles that govern society. They think, if they don’t get caught, it ain’t illegal. And that the Law doesn’t apply to them or should be interpreted literally –even when that’s absurd.

Daryll, if you want to live by your own nutty interpretation of the Bible, fine. Do it in a closet –just as Jesus said you should. But don’t rail against those of us who don’t follow your Way. And you really can’t say who will be saved and who damned; it’s not the Day of Judgement yet. And what’s more, given the tale of the Prodigal Son, I’d say you may be very p!ssed off when you see who is saved.

    No, because it’s not consensual.

  77. WC says:

Libs, here’s another scriptural text that covers how sin can prevent you from entering the kingdom of God. Do you fall under one of these sinful categories?

    I Corinthians 6:

9Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

    Comment by Daryll — May 30, 2007 @ 10:50 am

Gosh, Daryll, which version of the Bible are you using?

Seems your version has been slightly reworded from the original translation. I do believe there is a passage in the Bible that speaks against this.

Let’s look at “homosexual offenders” as referenced in your Bible. The version I read, the King James version, uses “effeminate” instead.

Now…looking up the word effeminate at dictionary.com turns up nary a reference to homosexual offender.

It seems that either you, or your version of the Bible, has changed the wording to fit your position on certain earthly issues.

    How convenient.

So, thiefs won’t go to heaven?
Quick, who is the only person in the Bible who was specifically told that he would be with Jesus in heaven that very day?….tick, tick, tick, time’s up. The answer is the thief who was crucified with Jesus. So, is Jesus lying or is your interpretation of I Corinthians 6 incorrect?

BTW, I Corinthians 6 could not have originally included the phrase “homosexual offenders” because the term “homosexual” did not exist before 1890’s.

    Comment by PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) — May 30, 2007 @ 11:01 am

The thief asked for God’s forgiveness and asked to go with the him to see the father. “Forgiveness”. Also, the original term used was effeminate. Here’s the definition for the term effeminate: an offensive term used to describe a man whose behavior, appearance, or speech is considered to be similar to that traditionally associated with women or girls.

  95. david says:

Daryll, the thief does not asked to be forgiven, but merely to be remembered. Indeed, the story of the philosophical thief is only in Luke and the Gospel of Peter. And I think what happens in the Gospel of Peter is more OT when discussing torture.

    0) And they brought along two criminals and crucified the Lord in between them. But he kept silent as though he had no pain. (11) And when they set the cross upright they wrote on it, “This is the king of Israel.” (12) And after they had put his clothes in front of him, they divided them and cast lots for them.
    (13) Then, one of these criminals reprimanded them, saying, “We have suffered this way because of the wicked things we did, but he, the one who is the savior of humanity, what wrong has he done to you?” (14) And being angry at him, they ordered that the criminal’s legs not be broken so that he would die being tortured.

Here, the thoughtful and merciful criminal is not saved, but dies in agony for having questioned the actions of the lawful authority.

Consider this as happening in Gitmo. Three prisoners being tortured and two admit to being rebels but one says the third is innocent. And, for his protest, he is treated to even greater pain and suffering. Here is the Cheney way. It’s the way of the Roman legion. Not the way of Christ.

  96. Zooey says:

You happened to get away, so other’s who’ve been victims don’t matter? When was the last time you were in California, by the way?

    Mind your own business, Daryll.

  99. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

    Daryll

YOU have no idea what is in peoples’ hearts, whether they have or continue to ask God’s forgiveness, or if God HAS forgiven them. Yet, you come on here and condemn others to hell as if YOU are God. The Bible is full of religious leaders who committed murder (Moses), conspiracy to commit murder (David and Paul), and other clear sins/crimes. Yet, God accepted them, loved them. THAT is what being “Christ-like” is about – love. Not judging, condemning, hating, persecuting, or oppressing. I ask you again, when are you going to “shake off the dust from your sandals” and leave the TP community? Or at least stop trying to jam your dogma down our throats when you come to visit?

  100. david says:

Daryll, you do know Gino Jennings leads a tiny sect. It’s not mainstream Christianity. But you have to understand that he’s taken The Bible, a work of centuries of tradition and interpretation, and treated it as a self-help book. It’s not. Like any work of ancient wisdom, the books of the Bible must be approached with care and one must ask What does it mean? And someone such as Gino Jennings, who has not training in theology, can only trust to his own charisma to lead his congregation. His weakness is when he must deal with history and language and context. When this happens Jennings falls far below the meanest Rabbi or Episcopalian curate. He just doesn’t know what he’s talking about half the time. And smashing plaster statutes of the Blessed Virgin Mary might make good TV, but it really doesn’t help to explain the mystery of the divine.

  101. david says:

Daryll, stop pointing to the sawdust in the eyes of others when you’ve a 2×4 stuck in your own.

You think everyone who doesn’t believe what you believe will go to Hell. Well, there are millions who think if you don’t believe what they do that you’ll go to Hell. It’s a Mexican stand-off.

What does it all mean? Well, who cares who has sex with whom? That’s only important in the context of the Old Testament because it’s a society held together by blood lines. The Biblical references to homosexuality are nearly all directed at Temple prostitutes of the non-Jewish religions. It has nothing to do with same-sex marriage.

And if you feel you can’t pick and choose scripture, what are you gonna do about Leviticus and Deuteronomy? Plenty of laws there that nobody –even you– obeys any more. Even devout Jews don’t adhere to half the Laws there. They have been deemed obsolete. They texts are kept, but they are read to divine the principle behind the restrictions. And that requires considerable meditation.

  102. TerrytheTurtle says:

“She belongs to her ex-husband.” – St Darryl on someone elses wife

“There are two commandments that cover this issue. Thou shalt not fornicate, and thou shalt not covet thy neighbors things.” – St Darryl on the subject of raping other people’s wives.

Do you own your wife, St. Darryl? How positively medieval of you, you mysogynist bastard.

    Comment by Daryll — May 30, 2007 @ 11:33 am

    Hey Daryll…

Who says “effeminate” is an offensive term? You? Can you back that up?

What dictionary are you using? Is there an online version? Can you provide a link to it?

You still haven’t answered my question regarding what version of the Bible you are quoting from.

That’s quite a stretch to equate “effeminate” to “homosexuality.”

So if I overhear a man who has a voice like a woman, that automatically means he is a homosexual? If a man has large breasts or small hands, two traits normally associated with women, does that mean he is a homosexual? If a man cries at something sad, like a scene in a movie, which is something that only a woman would normally do, does that mean he is a homosexual?

These situations pretty much cover your description of a homosexual as it relates to speech, appearance, or behavior.

Rudy Giuliani once dressed up like a woman; this meets one criteria of your description of a homosexual. Can we assume he is a homosexual who just hasn’t come out of the closet yet?
