‘See how many people are dying in Darfur: None.’

Yesterday, the Sudanese ambassador to the United States, John Ukec Lueth Ukec, held a press conference in Washington to respond to the Bush administration’s sanctions. The Washington Post’s Dana Milbank sums up his speech, in which he denied that Sudan is doing anything wrong:

Genocide in the Darfur region? “The United States is the only country saying that what is happening in Darfur is a genocide,” Ukec shouted, gesticulating wildly and perspiring from his bald crown. “I think this is a pretext.”

Ah. So what about the more than 400,000 dead? “See how many people are dying in Darfur: None,” he said.

And the 2 million displaced? “I am not a statistician.”

Find out the facts on Darfur at the ENOUGH project.

it’s human immoral scum like you that have brought our country to this horrible state.

Hate to sound like an apologist for some very nasty behavior on the part of the Sudanese, but as to the charge of genocide the ambassador is right. It is a civil war to be sure with many innocent victims. But there is no evidence to support the charge of genocide. Powell’s use of that term surprised diplomats throughout Europe and concerned many that such exaggerated rhetoric might be another effort for the US to begin planning another war against an Islamic state. The Iraq fiasco has obviated that possibly but we should be alert to the possibility that the war party is pushing these claims.

So what is your idea for doing something?

    Sanctions: Done
    Strongly Worded letter: Done
Brought up to the U.N for them to begin the ball rolling on doing something: Done

Well… intervening would have made a lot more sense than Iraq, since the most persecuted people there (the Kurds) were already largely independent. Of course, we’re too tied up elsewhere to operate on the ground now, but what about a no-fly zone? That doesn’t require ANY troops on the ground, and there are already carriers in the area

  14. Dave says:

Well, at least he’s up front about his denial. In fact, I would say that lies like this are the kind that I am least worried about, because they are so blatant.
It concerns me more when politicians say that they care about something, and then DON’T do what needs to be done to change it. Take the Millennium Development Goals for example. Bush is on record supporting the MDG’s, but when it comes to acting that’s a different story. For example in 2005, after voicing support for the MDG’s the Bush team wanted a 29 page draft agreement concerning world hunger and the MDG’s to completely eradicate all mention of the MDG’s…

The Sudanese Air Force should have ceased to exist a decade ago.

One night’s worth of sorties, and hundreds of thousands of lives could have been saved.
