Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) blames U.S. troop deaths on Congress’ Iraq debate. “Al-Qaida knows that we’ve got a lot of wimps in Congress,” DeMint said at a luncheon Tuesday. “I believe a lot of the casualties can be laid at the feet of all the talk in Congress about how we’ve got to get out, we’ve got to cut and run.” He later added that while Iraq has “gone badly and it’s a mess, it would have been worse if we hadn’t gone in.”

“The United States is among the least peaceful nations in the world, ranking 96th between Yemen and Iran, according to an index of 121 countries.” Iraq ranks last.

President Bush “is under pressure from European allies to give ground on climate change at next week’s meeting of the world’s richest countries, but policy experts say prospects for a breakthrough are slim.”

“Twenty months after its depleted ranks of soldiers and airmen were pressed into service for Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the Louisiana National Guard still lacks hundreds of military troop trucks that can handle high water as it faces a new storm season that begins Friday.” The culprit, they say, is Iraq.

The Supreme Court ruling this week “in favor of an Alabama employer that had underpaid a female employee for years” is effectively “gutting a key part of the Civil Rights Act,” the New York Times writes. “Fortunately, Congress can amend the law to undo this damaging decision.” House labor chairman George Miller (D-CA) and others have announced plans to do just that.

Global warming is shrinking the Great Lakes, New Scientist reports. “Lake Superior, the largest body of fresh water in the world by surface area, is experiencing its lowest water levels since the record set in 1926.”

“A NATO helicopter on a night mission crashed late yesterday in southern Afghanistan, killing all seven service members aboard in what officials believe was a coordinated attack in an area known for aggressive Taliban fighting.”

“A Sunni police chief praised by U.S. forces for clearing his city of insurgents has been arrested following an investigation into alleged murder, corruption and crimes against the Iraqi people, the U.S. military said Wednesday.”

And finally: The World Bank Blackberry bruise. “After his introduction as the U.S. pick to lead the World Bank, Robert Zoellick said he had to turn off his BlackBerry. He wears the device on his belt, and typically keeps it on vibrate. ‘I’m getting bruises,‘ he said, pointing to it. ‘I’ve never had so many emails.’”

What did me miss? Let us know in the comments section.

George Bush also blamed the troops’ deaths on actions other than his own, and is generally a douche.

  2. Fan_of_Man says:

lets help Sen. Jim DeMint get enlisted and fight this battle…..

he isnt a pussy is he?

  3. smafdy says:

Jim DeMint was elected in South Carolina, where GOD is a white, upper-class, old guy, and black people still functionally count as a fraction of a person. What do you expect of his belief system?

  4. Lynn Anderson says:

WRT Bush being “under pressure” from Europeans desiring that the U.S. join them in addressing climate change, I say: puh-leeze. Bush does not respond to any pressure except that which helps propel him along a trajectory of his own choosing. He will work with the rest of the world to address climate change only if doing so will somehow prove more lucrative than ignoring it.

More pearls of wisdom from Jim DeMint:

“A free and stable Iraq will be a shining light against the shadow of Islamic extremism.”

“If a person wants to be publicly gay, they should not be teaching in the public schools.”

“President Bush has demonstrated tremendous courage and resolve in the past year. He has been the decisive leader these times have required.”

  6. michael says:

#3 you are absolutely right. Regardless of age or gender if you are in favor of the insurgency you should enlist. This includes Ms. Hasselbeck of The View.

  7. TripMaster Monkey says:

I was unable to find the ages of Jim DeMint’s four children, but seeing as how he married his wife in 1973, I’m betting that at least a few of them are old enough to serve. The question is: are they, in fact, serving?

Bush addresses global warming the same way he address Iraq. When everyone told him he should reduce troop levels, he found one person who advised him to increase troop levels, and that’s what he did.

When everyone tells him to reduce carbon dioxide, he finds a few who tell him oil from coal (which increases carbon dioxide) is good, thus that’s the course of action Bush pursues.

Now’s the time to buy property in the 120′ elevation level. Your great-grandchildren will thank you for their beachfront house.

    Comment by Kate Henry — May 31, 2007 @ 9:34 am

Exactly. Haven’t Iraqis been fighting us from the time this war first started? I didn’t see any real opposition to Bush or the War at that time, and yet they were still trying to kill us. What a ridiculous argument to say they’re only fighting us because Congress is debating the war. They’re fighting us because we are in their country.

I’m not sure what Demint is advocating here exactly. Is he saying that, in order not to offend our enemies, we should stifle all debate in our country, even in Congress? Would silencing and censoring people really be beneficial to our country? Demint sounds like a fascist with those remarks.

  23. TerrytheTurtle says:

  25. Ben Dover says:

You know, some days there are so many examples of why this nation and its Faux Noise Network/Rush listener/Republic Party base needs a huge freaking enema, I am at a loss trying to figure out what to say. Senator DimMint’s comments have caused the heel of my hand to be bloodied from pummeling my forehead so briskly. And its not even 10:00 a.m. on the East Coast. Is it January 20, 2009 yet? Please?

  26. joe says:

To use one of the Republicans’ favorite cliches, they were killing us before the Democrats started debating the war.

  27. Mike Hunt says:

    # 22. Please explain how someone can be “racist” and “liberal”?? The two dont go hand in hand.

Fascism is an authoritarian political ideology (generally tied to a mass movement) that considers individual and other societal interests subordinate to the needs of the state, and seeks to forge a type of national unity, usually based on ethnic, cultural, or racial attributes (This is what Bush has brought to America). And,

Nazism was not a precise, theoretically grounded ideology, or a monolithic movement, but rather a (mainly German) combination of various ideologies and groups, centered around anger at the Treaty of Versailles and what was considered to have been a Jewish/Communist conspiracy to humiliate Germany at the end of the First World War. It therefore consisted of a loose collection of incoherent positions focused on those held to blame for Germany’s defeat and “weakness”: anti-parliamentarism, ethnic nationalism, racism, collectivism, eugenics, anti-Semitism, opposition to economic and political liberalism, a racially-defined and conspiratorial view of finance capitalism, and anti-communism

Both Fascism and Naziism define the policies and outlook of the Republic Party.

Therefore your rant that a “liberal” is 1) racist, 2)Fascist and 3) a Nazi hold as much water as does Bush’s argument that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction.

Care to try a different angle?

  28. Kiki says:

Hasn’t anyone told DeMint that “cut and run” is from the OLD talking points?

And there’s no way it would have been “worse” if we hadn’t gone in…they’re in a civil war for God’s sake, no water, no electricity, no religious freedom. Saddamm sucked but damn, Bush couldn’t have screwed up worse if he’d have led the troops in himself.

  29. TripMaster Monkey says:

    Davetoo sez:

    TripMaster BlowMonkey

Cute. Did you make that up all on your own?

Perhaps you did not know this but we have an all volunteer military , do you know how to define the word Volunteer ?

    Stop-Loss. Look it up, jackass.

These soldiers stopped being “volunteers” a long time ago.

but alas Charlie Rangle D-NY wants to bring back the Draft , : ) betcha that bit of info made you shit your pants .

Why should I be worried about the Draft? Charlie’s bill was intended to point out the huge disparity between those who serve in the military of this country and those who benefit from that service (like Jim DeMint and his family). The fact that you seem to think that Charlie Rangel’s bill somehow proves your point shows graphically how woefully underinformed you are.

  30. Quadrajet says:

#29 – Good post, but you’re going to have to really dumb that down for Davetoo. Too many 3 syllable words my friend.

That was a excellent post, unfortunately, Davetoo will not be able to understand it.

    Too many big words.

  32. DM says:

Jim DeMint is an idiot, and Congress has held hearings (many of a partisan anti-war nature) during every war in the country’s history … since the US is administrating Iraq, that basically puts us dead last – quite an achievement considering we had to beat out Darfur and the Axis of Evil … the only breakthrough on global warming will be the saline in ice sheets … Iraq is to NOLA what drug addiction is to dependent children… the Civil Rights Act has the unfortunate vulnerability of relying on the government’s perception that the people are actually entitled to civil rights, the contrary being en vogue… can’t blame just global warming for the shrinking of the Great Lakes, every municipality from Duluth to Toronto is sucking it dry faster than it naturally replenishes… we will be out of Iraq in 2009, but we will be in Afghanistan forever… Zoellick, like many others, can attribute his career to James Baker ~ who in the absence of controversy now effectively controls the World Bank.

Finally, did Deadeye Dick have his visitor logs destroyed because Jeff Gannon was a regular visitor? Is Jeff Gannon the Father of Mary Cheney’s baby, or is it Howard K. Stern?

Demwit could be defined as think like a Democrat , peace at any cost , Hobbling our troops while they stay alive . Cutting Funding while squeeking about no Body Armor .
now as for this remark (Would silencing and censoring people really be beneficial to our country? Ask that question to Hillary and Al Gore . Have you ever heard of the Fairness Doctrine ? Here is what Al Gore had to say today

On CBS’ “Early Show” with Harry Smith, Al Gore said, “the first concerns among defenders of democracy arose with radio. And that’s why the equal time provision and the fairness doctrine and the public interest standard were put in place here. Those protections were almost completely removed during President Reagan’s term.”

There you have it. OwlGore feels that the government should set the “public interest standards” for radio shows like this one. Well, maybe I am a low man on the totem poll, but liberals loathe the conservative influence in talk radio. They just can’t stand the fact that people like Hannity, Limbaugh, Ingraham, and even little old me can get up here and yap for hours and hours and they can’t do a darned thing to limit what I talk about.

Sounds Like a Socialist I guess your Leaders are Learning From Hugo Chavez to me . Liberals throw Fascist around when they are unable to defend their position .

Patrick is obsessed with Venezuela for a couple of reasons 1) it’s full of brown people 2) it has oil 3) it’s on the bushco hit list and 4) it diverts attention from Iraq in the same way the whole illegal immigrant debate does. Think about it as Iraq gets worse the noise on immigration gets louder. ditto for the noise on Venezuela…these two topics are the republicans way of wagging the dog.

Both are issues to be dealt with but their relative importance compared to Iraq or the destruction of our democracy from within are far more important issues, both of which make the republicans look very bad indeed. So they need desperately to change the subject and are working feverishly to do just that.

  88. BrianMV says:

I hope I’m not being redundant, but this particular Congress had nothing to do with the US being in Baghdad in the first place…
If we would’ve just minded our own business and not invaded in the first place, we wouldn’t have to worry about our troops dying–There wouldn’t be any there to be in harm’s way…

  89. candideinnc says:

This “wimps” business is becoming a recurrent refrain. I suggest that the response be to label the ballsy, macho he-men using this term as “war mongers.” That sort of levels the playing field.

  90. SKdeA says:

Sorry Patrick1, Chavez didn’t shut down the TV station (which treasonously supported the failed coup against his democratically elected presidency), he just allowed its license to expire without renewal. It took five years. He could have put them all in prison and chose not to.
I know it does absolutely no good to present you with facts, I just can’t help it.
The more I see of Bush, the more I like Hugo…
Can we borrow him for a while?

  91. Royston Vasey says:

  92. TerrytheTroll says:

“We’re #1! We’re #1!…. oh wait. We’re still ahead of Iran! We’re still ahead of Iran!”

  93. Zooey says:

    #91 – Royston Vasey

There’s something to be proud of…..not.

  94. Royston Vasey says:

The authors say it is the first attempt to produce such a wide-ranging league table of how peaceful countries are. Factors examined by the authors include levels of violence and organised crime within the country and military expenditure.

The survey has been backed by the Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former President Jimmy Carter and US economist Joseph Stiglitz, who are all Nobel prize laureates.

  95. john aravosis is a douche bag! says:

    so according to deminted’s logic:

you’re in a store and you see a child put something in their pocket they didn’t pay for (stealing). so you walk up to their parent and let them know that their child is stealing. that parent then starts yelling at you-blaming you for their child stealing because you had the nerve to point out the fact that their child was stealing.

as i have stated before: republicans have the mental reasoning of 3 years olds.

  96. zxz says:

“The United States is among the least peaceful nations in the world, ranking 96th between Yemen and Iran, according to an index of 121 countries.” Iraq ranks last.”

“The objective of the Global Peace Index was to go beyond a crude measure of wars by systematically exploring the TEXTURE of peace,”…

    Enough said.
