White House regrets failure to do more blog outreach.

White House communications aides are expressing regret for failing to utiltize bloggers as a way to “catapult Bush’s propaganda.” Bulletin News (sub. req.) reports:

“We didn’t use the new tools of communication” like the Internet, blogs and mobile technology, said a former key official. As a result, added another official, the President’s message was filtered through the mainstream press which eventually got bored with the story and stopped reporting the President’s repetitive messages. “You’ve got to use the new tools. They can reach far more people than TV or the papers,” said an administration official. “A video on the Internet or some blogging can reach millions and we should have played with that much more,” said the official. White House insiders, however, dismissed the complaints, mostly from former communications officials, claiming that they have worked with bloggers and non-traditional media but that the tide has turned against them.

Well, I actually respected the White House for not using blogs. They are obviously mere propaganda machines (e.g. TP).

I just hope if they do, they will keep things tasteful and on track.

  2. Zooey Says:

Yeah, cuz that's the one thing missing that would have brought us over to the dark side. Uh huh....

  3. Ashen Shard Says:

heh, they likely are more regretful that the liberal blogs have taken off and are quite efficient boring holes in their propaganda. The right wing blogs, of course, have from the beginning been the tool of this white house and continue to be echo chambers.
Maybe they wish they could place filters on the internet and block any information that wasn't friendly towards dear leader.

Yeah, a continuous stream of massive policy and executive f*ckups will have that effect.

Man, that's an ignorant point of view. How are blogs as a communications medium inherently useful merely as "propaganda machines"?

And since when has BushCo shied away from any tool useful for "catapulting the propaganda"?

Well, take a good look at this thread, and the one before it and the one before that etc. etc. ad infinitum.

If you have a firm grip on reality, you will notice that TP promotes anarchy and anti-american sentiment. I don't claim to know what is behind all of their spin, but it ain't wholesome I can tell ya that.

It is for that reason that I do not want to see the govt involved with this type of shit.

  13. reality&check Says:

Actually they did and do use blogs. The republicons and RNC have regularly fielded seminars for rightwing bloggers, and if you look at conservative vs progressive blogs, the conservative actually outnumber the progressives - though the progressives have far higher traffic numbers. And it doesn't take a genius to figure out that all these trolls on different forums and sites come from somewhere, and its not a wild guess that the ones working fulltime are probably getting paid to do it. Don't be fooled.

This is another Rovian distraction tactic.

The White House has been HITTIN the BLOGS HARD -- but showing few results. They were even paying pundits for that. With taypayer dollars.

So the heart of this ridiculous suggestion is to refocus the debate to suggest that -

1/The President still has some avenues to communicate credibly (he doesn't).

2/The President still has something worthwhile to say (he doesn't).

Mr. President, sir, I fear it's a waste of time trying to explain this concept to an individual of your evident intellectual capability, but you essentially stated at the top of the thread that blogs were de facto instruments of propaganda.

Some use them as propaganda, sure. Some even see truth as propaganda, when it doesn't suit their worldview (yes, you).

But there is nothing inherent in the form of a blog that makes it unsuitable for truthful reporting or wtachdog functions or any other purpose. Why, I hear there are even sites on the web that offer entertainment!

A blog is just as useful and respectable a medium as the humans who run it demand that it be. Some bloggers have impeccable journalistic credentials and adhere scrupulously to the highest ethics. Some report whatever trash they think will help their side and then slink away when they are proven wrong (see the "Valerie Plame is not covert" crowd, for instance).

But your statement that blogs are necessarily propaganda is just ignorant.

There's no other way to explain such a claim when they only occupy their positions because of their blatant and obvious use of blogs and forums to get their propaganda out. Conventional wisdom says they don't care about the truth, but I think it's worse than that. They actively seek out new truth to contradict, just for the hell of it. It's like a sport, like they're in a contest to see who can get their mouthpieces in the right-wing blogosphere to repeat the most blatantly untrue claim. The press has been a cheerleader of this administration for a long time, now and people are tired of an endless diet of propaganda and bright, shiny distractions. Comment by JTitor — May 31, 2007 @ 8:41 pm

    Sure.

    The thread's title is:

“CDC’s Ability To Respond To Tuberculosis Scare Hampered By Bush’s Budget Cuts”

meaning that Bush has prevented the CDC from doing all that they needed to do.

However, when you follow the link that pertains to the CDC's ability, you read that this was the first situation of it's kind and that many ethicists commend the CDC's response. It was (at least) one (meaning, only one that they know of) critic who was not pleased.

TP's title is misleading because this was the first of this kind of situation, and unless Bush can see the future, his actions can not be construed as deliberately undermining the CDC's efforts to respond. Additionally, TP has not shown that the *CDC's* efforts were hampered at all. If anything it was airline security.

  55. Mr. President Says:

Actually, I was wrong. The dissenting critic actually thought that the CDC *did too much*:

"While many infectious-disease experts and ethicists supported the agency’s action, at least one strongly criticized it as over-reacting."

New York, NY, March 24, 2006 – The American Lung Association today called on Congress to reject Administration plans to cut more than $1 million from funding to fight tuberculosis, warning that without stable support for state and local TB control programs, recent declines in the disease may not be maintained.

  75. the republic of stupidity Says:

Perhaps if we gave the Repubs a lesson on how this all works, they might do better.

See, the whole thing is basically a series of tubes...

And when you want to find something, you use this thingy called "the Google"...

You type in your question, and it goes down one of these tubes, in one of Ted Stevens' ears, out the other, and just like that, you're using the Internets!!! See, it was so easy, even a Repub can do it!

  76. darth vader Says:

#74 - good point but from what i hear, the only thing repubs use the net for is asking teenage boys to describe their genitals

  77. JPark Says:

#75 Darth, I am pretty sure they like using nets for rounding up black voters.

  78. the republic of stupidity Says:

Nos 75 & 76, you've both probably got it right! Repubs tend to go back and forth between the two. They'll go "online" (high-tech geek talk for using the tubes) and try to find any minority group engaging in "Voter Fraud", even if they have to make it up themselves... and after an exhausting bout of fighting imaginary crime, how else can a Repub unwind, other than a little "friendly chat" w/ an underaged page lounging around in his Speedos, just a-waiting for a Repub Senator or Congressman to hit him up?

  79. loretta Says:

Geez, will these idiots ever get it? If the message is
wrong/flawed/suspect YOU WILL NOT GET SUPPORT FOR IT, no matter what you do or how hard you try.

  80. Mimi Schaeffer Says:

It wouldn't have done the White House any good to do outreach. Their foot soldiers don't read.

  81. Sharon Mounier Says:

We would just ignore you on the internet also Mr. President....Yawn....Who watches television now days anyway?? I don't and I bet most Democrats do not watch that much television now days either....

I might, at the most watch about two hours of television a week and you can thank Republicans for that....They have made television a real turn off....I like the internet (Madam Speaker's "YouTube" site) as well as blogs as a source of information better than television, that is when I'm not writing to Congress....

I got you Congressman Boustany!!!! Boooooooooyah!!!! I successfully pushed close to 550 letters to the entire 110th Congress (yes all 535 members) through the U.S. Postal mail service in TWO DAYS!!!!! Some of your members of Congress are getting two letters from me!!!!!

Two points for my side Congressman!!!! And everybody gets Mardi Gras beads too Congressman Boustany, except for you!!!! You get a picture of a roach Congressman Boustany!!!!!!
Bwahahahahahaha!!!! There's nothing like the sweet smell of success!!!!!

    Victory!!!!!!!!!!
