  19. Armando Gomez says:

Has the conservatives finally seen “The Light That Wasn’t There?” They should have–since Bush & Company have been BFL (Big, Fat Liars) from the start. What should have gave them (the Bush administration) away? Two things: Bush’s phony smile and what came out from that phony smile: “Ah is a Compassionate Conservative.” A contradiction in basic logic that everyone could see from the beginning but looked the other way instead. Dying in their sleep (the conservatives) was more preferable at the expense of the rest of Americans. And of America, as well.

  20. Bluedog49 says:

Chris: “True conservatives never liked Bush to begin with.”

Oh, give me a frickin break you weasel. The facts speak for themselves. At re-election time, some polls gave Bush over a 90% approval rating among Americans who called themselves “conservatives.” Right. I still remember how few conservatives would admit to having supported Richard Nixon. It’s the same pattern over and over because you people never change. You’re sociopaths.

Pending election? It’s 17 months away….by that logic, with 24 months between elections, there is always one “pending”.

It has nothing to do with 2008; people aren’t happy with immigration amnesty. Well, Ted Kennedy is, but he doesn’t count.

  31. Abby says:

I’m not accepting the Conservative effort to dismiss the failure of the Bush regime on incompetence. It’s a direct result of Conservative ideology put into practice, not incompetence. If you really look at it, the Bush regime has been highly effective at implementing a Conservative agenda. Their plan is to place the government in such dire debt as to make it incapable of fulfilling any social needs. They are also deliberately undermining public confidence in government to “prove” that it can’t provide effective solutions to social/economic problems and that those things are best privatized. Didn’t anybody bother to listen to Grover Norquist when he said they wanted to shrink government to a size that they could drown in a bathtub? Driving up the national debt is a key element in that strategy. Don’t let Republicans off the hook by claiming that Bush is not a real Conservative. The inevitable result of Conservative ideology put into practice is rampant corruption, deliberate malfeasance, government that doesn’t work, wars without end and a justifiably angry populace. The outrageousness and criminality of the Bush regime is not the failure of an individual or a small group of neo-cons, it’s the massive catastrophic effect of an entire misguided ideology. Conservatism is headed for the dustbin of history where it belongs with other totalitarian ideologies. Don’t let the right wing resurrect it with a new face.

Wait. Whats that I hear?? Sounds like teeth munching on the leg bone of a chimp. Sweet!

  34. hellinabucket says:

m12 is once again wrong. Here’s Levin’s blog:

    The President Is Losing Me

I guess it’s legacy time over at the White House. The president is imitating Arnold Schwarzenegger now. Does the president have any conservative domestic initiatives that he’s actively pursuing? If so, I’d like to know what they are. Richard Nixon tried this when his ratings were low. It didn’t work.

Mr. President, the Left hated you the day you walked into the Oval Office, if not before. Their hate for you is frozen in time. If you actually believe in what you are doing, then I and many others misjudged you. You expanded the federal role in education, and we held our nose because of the war. You signed McCain-Feingold in the dead of night, and we held our nose because of the war. You expanded Medicare by adding prescription drugs, and we held our nose because of the war. You increased farm subsidies, and we held our nose because of the war.

Today you disparage us for opposing a massive amnesty program that endangers our economy and national security. Today you even embrace the religion of global warming, a stunning shift from prior policy (your administration even went to the Supreme Court and argued correctly that carbon dioxide is not a pollutant).
    What’s a conservative to do?

As you can see above it’s a lot more than immigration that has this conservative fed up and ready to feed on the lame duck.

and this is the problem with my sycophant followers, with individuals like justice who believe I was a good President and succesful.

son, let me in on a secret, my Presidency was a failure….but shhhhhhhh, don’t say it too loud, ok?

    1) WTC bombing in 1993, what did I do to capture Bin Laden after we found out that the culprits were involved with him?

    2) 1996 Bin Laden declares war on America and calls America a paper tiger, I was in power. What did I do to capture him?

    3) 1996 American base in Saudi Arabia is hit by Al Qaeda, what did I do to capture Bin Laden?

    4) 1998 Two American embassies are bombed and destroyed by Al Qaeda, hundreds die, what did I do to capture Bin Laden?

    5) 2000 the USS Cole is hit, 20 navy personell die, what did I do to capture the culprits, Al Qaeda and Bin Laden?

    6) I promised America that if I was voted into office I would never, ever push or sign into low the don’t ask don’t tell policy in the military. I signed this bill into law.

    7) People claim that me doing interns did not affect my Presidency, ,sorry kid, I was more worried about chasing a skirt than keeping America safe.

    8) I lied and people died, Americans died. I was more worried about my image, my superficial image and what the world would think of me. I didn’t care about keeping America save.

    9) The .com bubble bursted while I was in office, the NASDAQ and the DOW both drop dramatically while I was in office.

    10) Gas prices were under the rise while I was in office.

    11) Bin Laden was planning 9/11 while I was in office.

can you please tell me again, your President, my sycophant follower, how my Presidency was a success?

Now, 6 YEARS into his administration, and suddenly, “conservatives” no longer like Bush??? WTF? For 6 LONG YEARS he could do no wrong, and now, all of a sudden, it’s time for a divorce?

Not so fast, conservatives: Bush, and his administration are the flowering of the conservative movement. Our current situation IS the direct result of applied conservative “principles” in action! Yes sir, with conservatives in charge of the government, it just doesn’t get any better than this! The problem that conservatives face is that most of the swing voters have started connecting the dots on Mr. Bush and his conservative “principles” and they aren’t happy. Apparently, the prospect of becoming a permanent minority party in 2008 — as the result of conservatives being in power — has the likes of K-Lo, Frum and Levin losing sleep.

Not to worry! The “solution” is at hand: “real” conservatives will throw Bush under the bus — without actually throwing him under the bus — and pretend that his corrupt and incompetent misadministration was some sort of anomaly and quickly anoint another “real” conservative to take Bush’s place — just in time for the next election.

Oh yeah, meet the new boss, same as the old boss — only, this one’s a “real” conservative? No, thanks.

Sorry, but the Republican party’s steadfast support for endless war, tax cuts for people who don’t need them, corrupt and unaccountable government, and policies designed to screw working people have already rendered this ridiculous little PR offensive null and void for anyone with an IQ above room temperature. But that group does not include the 28% of moron-Americans who see Mr. Bush’s business friendly immigration bill as a stab in the back. You know, the racist, xenophobes that constitute the vast majority of the Republican party’s base.

Black Helped Frum Stay in the Black

    Ken Silverstein
    Harper’s

    May 29, 2007

I recently obtained financial records that showed that in late 2000 David Frum, the former speechwriter for President Bush, received monthly payments of $16,667 from Conrad Black’s Hollinger International. Black, the media magnate, is currently on trial for fraud and racketeering in Chicago. Prosecutors allege he used Hollinger as his personal “piggy bank”; he and three co-defendants are charged with stealing $60 million from the company . A 2004 report by Richard Bredeen, done at the request of Hollinger’s board, said Black displayed “no need to distinguish between what belonged to the company and what belonged to the Blacks.”

In the overall scheme of things the combined sums were relatively small, but I was curious for a number of reasons. First, it wasn’t clear what Frum did for the payments. Second, Frum has publicly defended Black against charges that he misused Hollinger money and yet has never, as far as I can tell, acknowledged that he received money from Hollinger. Third, Black is accused of misspending shareholder money and any payments from Hollinger to Frum, a long-time friend of Black’s, should only have been made for sound professional reasons.

So yesterday I sent Frum an e-mail to ask about the money. He replied online, writing that the payments—which were made between September and December of 2000, and were halted when Frum went to work for the administration—were “to help develop a new Internet publication for Hollinger.” (He didn’t say whether this publication ever came to fruition.)

“I have repeatedly referred in this space and elsewhere,” wrote Frum, “to my long professional association with Conrad Black.” He wrote that the consulting fees he charged Hollinger “were in line with what I have charged other clients for similar work,” and that disclosures “can easily become silly and pedantic. Do I really have to mention that I used to write speeches for George W. Bush every time I write about him?

I’m emphatically not suggesting Frum did anything wrong in taking money from Hollinger, but I do think he should have disclosed the payments. No, he doesn’t need to mention that he was a former Bush speechwriter every time he writes about the president because his work for Bush is common knowledge (and only a Wikipedia search away). But when Frum defends Black on charges that he misspent Hollinger money, I believe he should acknowledge that he was a recipient of Hollinger largesse to the tune of $16,667 a month. That’s a relevant fact beyond any professional or personal relationship the two men had, particularly in the context of Frum’s commentary on the ongoing trial.

The payments are also noteworthy because they are typical of the way that Black spent shareholder money on whatever suited his fancy. I asked a former Hollinger employee about Frum’s explanation of the payments. “If there was a good idea for an Internet publication that would make money, there’s no issue,” she replied. “The trouble for all of us was there were no business plans for any of these ‘internet investments.’ The accountants would ask us for contracts, paperwork, backup, prospectuses, the things you would have in hand before you send large sums of money to someone. These business niceties never existed. So, yes, it could have been a legitimate business consulting fee, though the business was never described or explained to those doing the funding, in the office, or to the shareholders whose money it was.”

I’ve asked this question before and trust me, I’m not a gay-basher at all, but why is the current conservative movement so gay? Considering the political record and stands our conservative leaders take these days, it just seems very strange.

  76. big papa says:

    …Conservatives are America’s Taliban/al Qaeda…

…they are America’s racists, sexists, homophobes, xenophobes, and democracy haters…

…they HATE American freedom, diversity, tolerance, the pursuit of happiness…

…jurisprudence, and the rule of law…

…the conservative movement and its adherents must be DESTROYED…

    …lest America perish…

  77. EPV says:

Get real. The distancing from Bush is no surprise. The same criminals are wiping their hands clean on Bush and embracing the “new” face of [the same old neo-con corpo-theofascism] monster. Look at it as a new prow on the same old vessel.

Cheney and Rumsfeld and all those heckuva guys have been around, without being punished for past misdeeds, what, forever. They’ll be back in 2008.

  78. Devil's Advocate says:

Who turned off the Kool-Aid spigot?

This is going to be fun to watch. Conservatives have their knickers in a twist because 2008 is an election year. Get the popcorn ready!
