Schlozman Under Fire From Senate Over Effort To Squash Voter Suppression Probe»

schlozman2.jpgYesterday, the Los Angeles Times reported that former Minnesota U.S. Attorney Thomas Heffelfinger may have been targeted for removal by the Justice Department because of his role in protecting the rights of Native American voters.

Heffelfinger, who resigned last year for personal reasons, had raised concerns that an effort by the Republican Secretary of State, Mary Kiffmeyer, to bar certain uses of Tribal IDs for voter identification would result in electoral discrimination against Indian voters.

Heffelfinger’s efforts to dig deeper into the issue were blocked by two controversial political appointees in the Department, Bradley Schlozman and Hans von Spakovsky, who used bureaucratic measures to prevent an internal department investigation:

After reviewing the matter, Rich recommended opening an investigation.

In response, he said, Bradley Schlozman, a political appointee in the department, told Rich “not to do anything without his approval” because of the “special sensitivity of this matter.”

Rich responded by suggesting that more information be gathered from voting officials in the Twin Cities area, which includes Minnesota’s two most populous counties.

A message came back from another Republican official in the department, Hans von Spakovsky, saying Rich should not contact the county officials but should instead deal only with the secretary of state’s office.

Von Spakovsky indicated, Rich said, that working with Kiffmeyer’s office reduced the likelihood of a leak to the news media.

The orders from Schlozman and Von Spakovsky, who wielded unusual power in the civil rights division, effectively ended any department inquiry, Rich said.

Yesterday, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) wrote to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) about Schlozman’s upcoming testimony to Congress, urging Leahy to question him “closely” about:

– his efforts to effectively quash the investigation into possible voter discrimination against Native Americans;

– what role, if any, Tom Heffelfinger’s efforts to protect the voting rights of Minnesota’s Native American communities placed him on the Department’s now infamous list for termination.

Schlozman, who is suspected of politicizing the hiring of non-political jobs in the DoJ’s Civil Rights Division, will testify on Tuesday, June 5.

UPDATE: The Legal Times previews Schlozman’s testimony.

    Clinton’s Hillarious spelling gaffe

    June 01, 2007 12:00

POOR old Hillary Clinton - let down by a logo.

The presidential hopeful - in the running to be first female leader of the free world - was left looking like a goose during a speech to Silicon Valley technology business leaders in California.

Her podium, at the Applied Technologies University campus in Santa Clara, was framed by a backdrop featuring the large slogan “New jobs for tommorrow”.

Yep, that’s right, with an extra “M” in the middle of the last word.

According to a gushing report from the scene, “She quickly let her audience of some 150 Silicon Valley CEO’s know that she was the hi-technology presidential candidate”.

However, Ms Clinton clearly failed to impress upon them that she was the high-quality grammatical candidate.

And while they focus on new jobs for tomorrow, perhaps they should all concentrate on correct spelling for today.

Read the local report and see video of Ms Clinton, and the offending sign, by clicking

    Eureka! I see clearly now.

I thought (errantly I guess) that the most pressing issue of the day was that a Democratic majority congress, that came to “power” via the people’s desire to end the Iraq Genocide Project, has done nothing to end the “war” and has actually even ESCALATED the atrocity.

Instead, I see now that the most pressing issue of the day is that political sleazeballs have been doing politically sleazy things and that thanks to the new Democratic congress, we will not rest until each and every sleazy Republican politician is exposed and granted immunity.

    Progressive indeed.

TP’s content management software and commenting software truly does suck. Why they don’t demand email verified registered accounts to post comment which would prevent name jacking) and a robust commenting system that doesn’t lose or disappear comments and actually posts comments in real time (or at least a timely manner) would be a significant improvement.

I think TP’s content itself is usually very good and timely, but the actual nuts and bolts of the commenting software… lame.

Why do you want voter fraud to take place? Why don’t you want to ensure the person that is voter is who they say they are?

  44. veritas Says:

#32 Hey Timmy - if you really want to discuss true “voter fraud”, then I suggest you get the core of it all. Check out how the past two elections were stolen at http://www.blackboxvoting.org or http://www.bradblog.com and you’ll realize that the issuance of a federal ID means absolutely nothing. It no longer matters that anyone votes - the hackers will corrupt the machines as the votes are cast. In the case of complacency due to the authorities espousing “paper ballots”, guess what?? Paper ballots are counted via an “opti-scan machine” which has software that has been and will be hacked! Diebold machines have been hacked by several organizations and universities and it’s well know now for well over a year - Princeton University is doing their own research and they’ve found an “intentional vulnerability” in these machines - Oh…My!! What a surprise, eh??

There’s really no point in voting any longer if the machines are hacked, is there?

One more “right” we thought we had in this quasi-democracy-cum-fascism!

  45. veritas Says:

The Bush Cabal and GOP would like everyone to believe that the problem we have with “voting rights” is the supression of voters which is a crime for sure - however, the much larger picture is the GOP’s role, along with Diebold and Ken Blackwell (Supervisor of elections for the state of Ohio whose conflict of interest as Co-Chair of Bush-Cheney ‘04 led him into the abyss of voter corruption and he is being investigated as I type for his role in all of this. Two men in Ohio have already pled guilty to “voting machine tampering” and are serving sentences; however…..however….the much larger picture is “how” this was all accomplished….look to the Federalist Society for those answers as their main function is the overturning of all laws which pertain to civil rights and the continuation of this democracy…..couple that with PNAC and you’ve got the perfect prescription for the downfall of this country, which they are in the process of accomplishing right now. It’s all been part of a huge “coup” on this country from the inside. Do your homework - it’s all there - the dots can be readily connected and are being connected by intelligent minds…..scientists weighing in on the “improbable collapse” and so many tenacles of this gargantuan octopus called the Project for a New American Century (PNAC). After all, the Patriot act was forged well in advance of 911 and bush was quoted as stating to the PNAC members who devised it: We will need another “pearl harbor-type event” to accomplish this……and voila! 911.
    Need I say more??

There’s a great HBO special entitled ‘HACKING DEMOCRACY’ which every american needs to see. Then you will realize that the “voter fraud” to which Gonzo or Bush refer is “small potatoes” and a “diversionary tactic” to make it appear that they care about voting rights - hell, the used the handicapped lobby to usher in HAVA in order to get their DRE’s in place to be hacked. Don’t sleep walk, Timmy. There are much larger issues here than a mere ID!

    #40,

Just like rape is a crime. So why aren’t you advocating that all men get castrated so as to ensure that they cannot ever commit the crime of rape, if they wanted to. Same logic moron.

You combat crime by punishing the criminals. You do NOT combat crime by assuming that everyone is a criminal.

  49. KRank Says:

Why do you want voter fraud to take place? Why don’t you want to ensure the person that is voter is who they say they are?

    Comment by timmeh — June 1, 2007 @ 6:21 pm

TIMMEH! Why are you so convinced that voter fraud is a huge problem? The reason some US Attorneys got canned is because they refused to file voter fraud cases when evidence said no such fraud existed.

On the other hand, it does provide you decent cover to suppress the vote of poor and minority voters, the kind who generally vote Democratic.

  50. veritas Says:

#43 Justice - How serendipitous that this is occurring right now! It may already be “too late” to do anything about the massive hacking which has been occurring in our elections. Americans have lost faith - that is, those who know the truth and the facts. Since every other constitutional right has been eroded or expunged from the document, the right to vote and have one’s vote count (and not be hacked) would seem to also be at risk right now. Nothing is being done substantially to correct it. The “smoke & mirrors” tactic is to mandate “paper trails” which does absolutely nothing to solve the hacking problem because the paper will never be able to be accurately hand counted. These “paper ballots” will be scanned on an opti-scan computer to count them….so how does this eliminate hacking?? It doesn’t at all. That’s the point.

We claim a benchmark of democracy in Iraq when the Iraqis voted and flashed their dyed fingers which was accomplished in a complete lockdown of the streets and under military protection - yet - yet - we allow the intentional hacking of our own supposed democratic elections? How hypocritical can one get?? This country has stopped “walking the talk” and, as such, has become a bastion of evil and corruption because in not walking our own talk, we’ve become lying hypocrites who have lost the respect of the entire globe at this point. We’ve got no one to blame but ourselves for our demise at this point.

    Comment by timmy — June 1, 2007 @ 6:39 pm

Yet you HAVE seen enough proof to tell you that voter fraud is a huge problem, huh?

    Do some research, Timmeh.

John McKay of Washington state, who had decided two years earlier not to bring voter fraud charges that could have undermined a Democratic victory in a closely fought gubernatorial race, said White House counsel Harriet Miers and her deputy, William Kelley, “asked me why Republicans in the state of Washington would be angry with me.”

    McKay was later fired.

“Florida and Colorado bring to nine the number of closely contested election states where the Bush administration set out to replace prosecutors. In Washington and at least six other states, it now appears, U.S. attorneys were fired or considered for firing as Republicans in those states urged investigations or prosecutions of alleged Democratic voter fraud.

    LINK

Do I expect any of this to “prove” to you that these attorneys were fired because they refused to pursue bogus voter fraud cases? No. If you were a normal-minded person i would expect these links would at least cause you to question the rationalizations given by the White House. But you won’t. Your standard for proof of things contrary to your belief system is impossible to reach, and the standard of proof for you to buy stuff that makes you feel good about yourself and your party is so low an ant couldn’t trip over it.

  67. KRank Says:

WHERE is Voter ID a legitimate issue, except in the minds of vote-suppressing Republicans?

What evidence can you point to that demonstrates the grave threat to our democracy posed by voter fraud?

Any widescale cases that weren’t thrown out by one court or another after they were brought by Republicans?
