Conservative columnist Peggy Noonan declares today that President Bush “has torn the conservative coalition asunder,” with consequences “for the American future.” This White House “thinks its base is stupid,” she writes, while “conservative Bush supporters have felt like sufferers of battered wife syndrome.”

With the conservative coalition reeling, Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) believes the solution lies in “rebranding” itself. He has convened a group of allies to work on conservative “branding,” an exercise designed to restore an identity to a coalition that “many voters no longer see as holding a core set of principles.”

“Fort Lewis, which this month has suffered its worst losses of the war, will no longer conduct individual memorial ceremonies for soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Instead, the post will hold one ceremony for all soldiers killed each month.” Fort Lewis’ commanding general wrote in a memo, “I am afraid that with the number of soldiers we now have in harm’s way, our losses will preclude us from continuing to do individual memorial ceremonies.”

Top U.S. commander Lt. Gen. Raymond Odierno “warned” yesterday that “he may not be able to make a full assessment of the situation in Iraq by September, as demanded by lawmakers.”

President Bush yesterday announced a “new international climate change framework,” setting “aspirational goals” for reducing carbon emissions but “no concrete targets or dates, no enforcement mechanism and no penalties for noncompliance. It also wouldn’t take effect until four years after Bush leaves office.”

Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson on global warming: “There’s much we know and can agree on around the climate change issue, and there’s much that we just don’t believe we do know…and we want to have a debate about the things we know and understand, the things we know about that we don’t understand very well, and the things we don’t even know about around this very complex issue of climate science. So that will continue to be our position.”

“Gov. Bob Riley signed a resolution Thursday expressing ‘profound regret’ for Alabama’s role in slavery and apologizing for slavery’s wrongs and lingering effects. ‘Slavery was evil and is a part of American history,’ the Republican governor said.”

“The popular online dating service eHarmony was sued on Thursday for refusing to offer its services to gays, lesbians and bisexuals.” eHarmony was “founded in 2000 by evangelical Christian Dr. Neil Clark Warren” and “had strong early ties” with the religious right group Focus on the Family.

And finally: A press release from Sen. Wayne Allard (R-CO) yesterday calling for a “National First Responder Appreciation Day” included the following line, attributed to Allard: “I don’t think first responders have really done anything significant in comparison to their counterparts who have dealt with real natural disasters, I have no idea what else to say.” Allard’s spokesman “sent out a correction 23 minutes later that said, ‘Please pardon my typo in the first version of this release. I sincerely apologize for the error.’”

What courage! It must have been extremely difficult for Bob to take such a principled stand on such a controversial issue!

Tune in next week, when Gov. Riley will sign a resolution condemning the eating of human infants!

Where’s the “typo”, Allard? Show me a “typo” that changes “I don’t think first responders have really done anything significant in comparison to their counterparts who have dealt with real natural disasters, I have no idea what else to say.” to something that’s not reprehensible, you jackass.

“Top U.S. commander…warned…he may not be able to make a full assessment of the situation in Iraq by September, as demanded by lawmakers.”

What ever happened to the Military answer that we old soldiers used to know and love: Sir! Yes, Sir. Right away, Sir. As you say, Sir.

We need to go back to that old saw. It makes no difference whether you follow or lead, just don’t get in the way.

The answer infers only one possible scenario. It is not that he is not ABLE to make the assessment, it is that he has been DIRECTED not to make the assessment. That fact alone dictates the outcome of a legitimate evaluation and Congress should act now and not wait until September.

  33. unbelievable Says:

What are we doing to our military? Fort Lewis is one of our greatest bases with our best troops. Rangers, SF, and both light and mech infantry come from there. I spent some time there myself. This news is more than just sad.

  35. Zimzone Says:

    You are correct.
Frank Herbert wrote ‘Dune’, followed by 3-4 sequels, but the first was the best, hands down.

I think in September they will say that the troops have not had time yet, that the surge took a while to get all of the troops on the ground. They will claim that, now that the troops are finally there, progress is being made and we should give them more time. Also, other countries, including Britain, are withdrawing a number of troops between now and September, so they can point to that as a need to send in more troops to fill in the gap. This only makes sense to people who have never been to Iraq. The US troops are built up in totally different geographical areas and with different missions. So, when Britain pulls troops from Basra, it makes no sense to send more US troops to BIAP and Balad.

I read the article and that crap makes me so angry. My husband served in both the Army and AF and has told me that what the military wants and trains is nothing more or less than people who can be told what to do unquestioningly. Thinking for yourself is one of the biggest no-nos for military personnel.
And before the trolls go after me, I know that in combat situations it is imperitive that orders are followed immediately and unquestioningly. HOWEVER, that does NOT mean that it is imperitive in all aspects of their lives. A lot of people don’t have the capability of being able to take orders and to think for themselves, so they pick one or the other. Many of these very same people cannot understand the people who can live with that duality.

In a well run government, this mistake would have been foreseen ahead of time. They would have, from the get go, understood that there would have been a continuous stream of fatalities and an undetermined length of conflict. They would have made this decision at the get go, instead of after doing something different and having to change it now to protests.

Okay so I don’t get one argument of the climate skeptics. Well, I don’t get all of them, but this particular inconsistency in particular. According to the climate luddites, there’s a global conspiracy of scientists to push the idea of climate change so they can get more money to research climate change.

But they also say that the research is inconclusive and there needs to be more research before we make any changes to our carbon-tastic way of life. So they oppose research on climate change because there’s not enough research on climate change.

    Which do they want?

From what little I know about eharmony, the program is based on a conservative Christian’s theories and model. The model clearly doesn’t have room for gay people or agnostics and I think it’s a little bogus to require them to change the model. Surely there are plenty of other web-based dating systems that are available and why, in god’s name (heh) would you want to participate in eharmony if you didn’t embrace the model?

When are the so called conservatives, whomever they may be and whatever principles they may find politically expedient to abandon, going to get their own party? let’s go over the conservative promises the Bush team has delivered, smaller government, states rights and no nation building. What pipe dream promises will they think of next to woo the authoritatively needy to their party’s tent. Hypocritical, aristocratic, knob polishers the lot of them all.

The Peggy Noonan article was very interesting. I never liked Noonan, but she’s not a stupid woman. And I’m interested in just how traditional conservatives are breaking with Bush, in what manner and over what issues, to see what the future might be like.

Ironically, the Democratic Party, in much better shape, is starting to have crisis of confidences too. Passing a war funding bill so quickly and handing Bush a blank check was disappointing to us. The Dem Party thinks they can wait Bush out, and eventually we’ll get out of there. What they don’t realize is that their supporters don’t think or work like that. Sheehan was right to quit and put her energy into something else. She saw no hope of real change right away, even given the last election. Status Quo time.

Meanwhile, people are sickening on peanut butter, their pets are dying from tainted additives from Asia, no one has health insurance, gas prices are unbelievable, big corporations own everything including us, and our political parties have no idea how to take a stand or what stand to even take.

    The middle class is dying.

There has to be a progressive movement pushing the Democratic party forward. But at the same time, there are disappointed Republicans who want things accomplished in this country too. So what will the future bring? Most likely a Democratic will win the next election. But what after that? Will a new moderate coalition of Dems/Repubs/Indies emerge with the failure of both parties?
