State Dept. officials ‘furious’ at Cheney hawkishness.»

ThinkProgress noted that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice insisted yesterday that Vice President Cheney “fully supports a diplomatic course over Iran’s nuclear program.” But that’s not the end of the story. The New York Times reports:

Ms. Rice’s assurance came as senior officials at the State Department were expressing fury over reports that members of Vice President Dick Cheney’s staff have told others that Mr. Cheney believes the diplomatic track with Iran is pointless, and is looking for ways to persuade Mr. Bush to confront Iran militarily. […]

The reports about hawkish statements by members of Mr. Cheney’s staff first surfaced last week in The Washington Note, an influential blog put out by Steve Clemons of the left-leaning New America Foundation. The reports have alarmed European diplomats, some of whom fear that the struggle over Iran’s nuclear program may evolve into a decision by the Bush administration to resort to force against Iran.

In interviews, people who have spoken with Mr. Cheney’s staff have confirmed the broad outlines of the reports, and said that some of the hawkish statements to outsiders had been made by David Wurmser, a former Pentagon official who is now the principal deputy assistant to Mr. Cheney for national security affairs.

    David Wurmser:

What do Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Perle, and David Wurmser have in common? We know that they’re in the cabal of neocons, who want to destroy the Middle East in order to benefit Israel. But what they specifically have in common, after the fall of Iraq, is their hostility toward Syria

I’ve mentioned on several occasions in this column a study of the cabal that appeared in 1996, entitled “Clean Break: A New Strategy for Securing the Realm.” It contains a call for removing the Saddam Hussein regime, followed by attacking Syria and finding an alternative to Yasser Arafat.

This study became the Bush administration’s policy after 11 September 2001. Since the part related to Iraq has been achieved, the cabal is now working to implement the portion concerning Syria.

Iran remains a final goal, but Iran is very strong and the US needs to isolate all of its allies (such as Syria) and disarm them (such as Hezbollah), before taking on the Islamic Republic.

The study called on Israel to ally with Turkey and Iran and strike at Syria through Lebanon, just as Wurmser has written time and time again calling for joint US-Israeli efforts against Syria. Wurmser repeated this call in 2000

Whatever I say about Wurmser isn’t sufficient to describe how dangerous he is for the Palestinians, Syria and every Arab country. He’s absolutely Israeli; he wants the US to wage Israel’s wars in the Middle East. Wurmser’s name has been linked to the Office of Special Plans, which Douglas Feith at the Pentagon created to shape intelligence supporting a war against Iraq when the intelligence organizations failed to provide the necessary lies. Wurmser worked as an advisor to John Bolton at the Pentagon and the two try to outdo each other in peddling lies about Syria and inciting the Bush administration against it. Bolton moved to the United Nations, where Bush appointed him Washington’s ambassador in the face of congressional opposition, and during its summer recess. Wurmser, meanwhile, moved to Dick Cheney’s office and both continued to spread their poison against Arabs and Muslims. Iraq was one step, and Syria was another. The cause is Israel and how it can dominate the region in the face of a huge majority of peoples that the cabal is trying to strip of their independence.

“The CDI’s Ledeen, Amitay and Sobhani were featured speakers at a May 2003 forum on “the future of Iran’ sponsored by AEI, the Hudson Institute and the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. The forum, chaired by the Hudson Institute’s Meyrav Wurmser, the Israeli-born wife of David Wurmser (he serves as Cheney’s leading expert on Iran and Syria), included a presentation by Un Lubrani of Israel’s Ministry of Defense.

Summarizing the sentiment of neoconservative ideologues and strategists, Meyrav Wurmser said: “Our fight against Iraq was only a battle in a long war. It would be ill-conceived to think we can deal with Iraq alone. We must move on, and faster.”

JINSA, a neoconservative organization established in 1976 that fosters closer strategic and military ties between the United States and Israel, also has its sights on Iran. At a JINSA policy forum in April 2003 titled “Time to Focus on Iran-The Mother of Modern Terrorism,” Ledeen declared, “The time for diplomacy is at an end; it is time for a free Iran, free Syria and free Lebanon.”

JINSA, along with CSP, serves as one of the main institutional links to the military-industrial complex for neoconservatives. Ledeen served as JINSA’s first executive director and was JINSA’s “Godfather,” according to Amitay. Amitay is a JINSA vice chair. JINSA board members or advisers also include former CIA director James Woolsey, former Rep. Jack Kemp and the AEI’s Joshua Muravchik. After he joined the administration, Feith resigned from JINSA.’s board of advisers, as did Vice President Dick Cheney and Undersecretary of State for Arms Control John Bolton.”

Meyrav Wurmser, an opponent of the Oslo peace accords and a central neoconservative figure.

In 1996 she helped write “A Clean Break: A New Strategy for Securing the Realm” and advised then-Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “to work closely with Turkey and Jordan to contain, destabilize, and roll-back” regional threats, help overthrow Saddam Hussein, and strike “Syrian military targets in Lebanon” and possibly in Syria proper. Coauthors of the report included Richard Perle, David Wurmser, and Douglas Feith.

She also cofounded with Yigal Carmon, a former colonel in the Israeli military intelligence, the Middle East Media and Research Institute (MEMRI).

  11. ace Says:

According to her Hudson Institute bio, Wurmser “helped to educate policymakers about the Palestinian Authority two-track approach to ‘negotiating peace’ with Israel: calling for peace in the English press and with western policymakers while inciting hatred and violence through official Arab language media.”

Although it describes itself as “non-partisan,” MEMRI–which has offices in London, Washington, Jerusalem, and Berlin–has frequently been accused of being nothing more than a propaganda outfit of Israeli intelligence.

According the Guardian, which dug up deleted pages from MEMRI’s web site through the internet archive, “Retrieving another now-deleted page from the archives of Memri’s website also throws up a list of its staff. Of the six people named, three–including [Yigal] Carmon–are described as having worked for Israeli intelligence. Among the other three, one served in the Israeli army’s Northern Command Ordnance Corps.”

The Guardian’s Brian Whitaker also reported: “Although Memri claims that it does provide translations from Hebrew media, I can’t recall receiving any. Evidence from Memri’s website also casts doubt on its non-partisan status.

Besides supporting liberal democracy, civil society, and the free market, the institute also emphasises ‘the continuing relevance of Zionism to the Jewish people and to the state of Israel’. That is what its website used to say, but the words about Zionism have now been deleted. The original page, however, can still be found in internet archives.”

    Conflicts and power

From an outstanding interview with Professor Ilan Pappe of Haifa University (my emphasis):

“I think that neo-conservatism is mainly a product of the Cold War, and I think as happened in Israel, so in the US, a lot of people benefit economically, sociologically, politically, from a situation of conflict which begins with the producers of arms, and it ends with the people who have a hold on the decision-making apparatus in the name of national security. And of course this was all lost in a way when the Soviet Union collapsed, and the cold war ended. And I think this group of people were looking for a new bogey man, a new threat to the national security of the US and they found it because of the very strong influence, I think, of Israel among other things, in the Arab world and the Islamic world. Of course, movements such as the Islamic Al-Qaeda did not help. They provided the pretext, and the context for even pushing these ideas even further. And what we have now is the same people, a next generation, who would do all they can to perpetuate the conflict, because they benefit from the conflict. They benefit from situations of wars, of conflicts, and so on, and I think this is what enforces their hold over the American policy making in the world at large, and in the Middle East in particular.”

We often wonder why people like Ledeen seem to be so interested in creating conflict for the sake of conflict. One reason is that people who are aware of the timing of a conflict are in a position to make money off it. Another reason is that this constant conflict constitutes the sole reason why these people have any power. They create an escalating series of problems, and then have to remain in power to ‘solve’ them. Of course, the solutions continue to lead to more conflicts. We can understand all the the talk about Iran as another example of creating a conflict which gives these characters something to do. While a civil war in Iraq benefits Likudniks in the American government and in Israel, it also benefits a guy like Cheney, whose only interest is in creating more power for Cheney. The United States has fallen into a vicious cycle where the jobs of the neocons and their fellow travelers like Cheney and Rumsfeld are dependent on their cleaning up the messes they have already started. An end to conflict would put them out of power, so we’ll never see an end to conflict.

  13. ace Says:

Ledeen’s ideas are repeated daily by such figures as Richard Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and Paul Wolfowitz. His views virtually define the stark departure from American foreign policy philosophy that existed before the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001. He basically believes that violence in the service of the spread of democracy is America’s manifest destiny. Consequently, he has become the philosophical legitimator of the American occupation of Iraq.

Now Michael Ledeen is calling for regime change beyond Iraq. In an address entitled “Time to Focus on Iran — The Mother of Modern Terrorism,” for the policy forum of the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs (JINSA) on April 30, he declared, “the time for diplomacy is at an end; it is time for a free Iran, free Syria and free Lebanon.”

With a group of other conservatives, Ledeen recently set up the Center for Democracy in Iran (CDI), an action group focusing on producing regime change in Iran.

Quotes from Ledeen’s works reveal a peculiar set of beliefs about American attitudes toward violence. “Change — above all violent change — is the essence of human history,” he proclaims in his book, “Machiavelli on Modern Leadership: Why Machiavelli’s Iron Rules Are as Timely and Important Today as Five Centuries Ago.” In an influential essay in the National Review Online he asserts, “Creative destruction is our middle name. We do it automatically … it is time once again to export the democratic revolution.”

Iraq, Iran and Syria are the first and foremost nations where this should happen, according to Ledeen. The process by which this should be achieved is a violent one, termed “total war,” a concept pioneered by the 19th century Prussian general, Karl von Clausewitz in his classic book “On War.”

A fellow at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, Ledeen holds a Ph.D. in History and Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin. In 1983, on the recommendation of Richard Perle, Ledeen was hired at the Department of Defense as a consultant on terrorism. While being investigated as a security risk by his supervisor, Noel Koch, it was learned from the CIA station that Ledeen had been carried in Agency files as an agent of influence of a foreign government: Israel.

After having his access to classified materials blocked he ceased working there. He next appeared at the National Security Council as a consultant working with NSC head Robert McFarlane. Ledeen was involved in the transfer of arms to Iran during the Iran-Contra affair — an adventure that he documented in the book “Perilous Statecraft: An Insider’s Account of the Iran-Contra Affair.” A prominent member of the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs (JINSA) board of governors and the Center for Security Policy (CSP), he advocates “total war” inline with the “Grand Strategy for the Middle East” which advocates “Iraq as the tactical pivot, Saudi Arabia as the strategic pivot and Egypt as the prize.” Ledeen is presently a serving member on the China Commission and, with the support of DOD Undersecretary for Policy Douglas Feith, he has since 2001 been employed as a consultant for the Office of Special Plans OSP). He is involved in the handling of classified materials and has high-level security clearances. He was also involved in election rigging of the 2000 election.

According to Bob Woodward’s newest book “State Of Denial” Henry Kissinger has been advising President Bush and Vice President Cheney about Iraq, telling them that “victory is the only meaningful exit strategy,”

Kissinger was nearly the head of the (CFR Whitewash) 911 Commission before Zelikow was installed to guard the evidence, and protect the guilty.

Today, Kissinger still continues to serve as a trustee of the powerful Rockefeller Brothers Fund, as a counselor to Rockefellers’ Chase Manhattan Bank, and as a member of Chase’s International Advisory Committee. Kissinger’s media influence is evident from his having served on the board of CBS, Inc., and having been a paid consultant to both NBC News and ABC News. That takes care of all three networks.

The Rockefellers run our political system, as well as our banking system (the Fed) our oil companies (Exxon Mobil) the Big Pharma companies, and most of the Airline industry.

Does anyone still doubt that Poppy Bush (or his controllers) are still in power?

LBJ was known in the Press as “The Brown & Root” (Skull & Bones / Halliburton) candidate. The prime benefactor in Vietnam was KBR.

Carter was quickly absorbed by the Trilateral Commission (AKA the new Council on Foreign relations – founded by David Rockefeller who is still the honorary chairman) The TC was “founded by Zbigniew Brzezinski (CFR member and founding member of the Trilateral Commission, and National Security Advisor to five presidents….) who called for a Pearl Harbor style event to secure the Globalist agenda in his book “The Grand Chessboard” .

Clinton was allegedly from the Rockefeller bloodline (Winthrop Rockefeller his real daddy). Bill Clinton rose to power from the state of Arkansas which was, and is completely controlled by the Rockefellers. He was known to be a business partner of Poppy Bush, something that isn’t a secret anymore. Most important of all Clinton completely covered up for the Crimes of Poppy Bush.

And who heads up Scooter Libby’s Legal defense Fund? Mel Sembler.

If you always keep the PNAC in mind, and remember the AGENDA that is being pursued on Israel’s behalf, it becomes very clear that a massive conspiracy to SELL THE INVASION OF IRAQ was in play.

The only explanation is that GHW Bush and the agents of Israel (including Lieberman) formed a CONSPIRACY (each for their own reasons) to work together to take down Clinton with Sexpionage (and that alliance continued through 9/11 and the invasion of the Middle East):

and to then implement the PNAC - to the benefit of Bush 41’s “Poppy Interests” in Afghanistan, Big Oil’s interests throughout the Middle East (and resolving the overhanging ($15 billion) Asbestos liability of Halliburton, represented by the Twin Towers), the Military Industrial Complex (Carlyle) and Israel - whose primary interest is the acquisition of resources and territory to create “Greater Israel.”

  18. ace Says:

Feith’s access to classified information and his alleged wrongdoing can likely be laid at the feet of more senior officials in the Bush Administration — namely Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld — who would have had to have overruled Pentagon background checks to reissue Feith’s clearances after he was booted from the National Security Council for allegations of espionage in the mid 1980s.

This lack of oversight has caused great concern among many former military and intelligence sources. One former intelligence source point to “a bigger can of worms” that a Feith investigation may unravel, pointing to the Israeli spy case — in which Pentagon analyst Larry Franklin passed classified information to a pro-Israeli lobby — and to the Defense Department’s own inability to address security breaches.

The Franklin leak is hardly an isolated incident.

In 1978, the current head of the World Bank and former Deputy Defense Secretary Secretary Paul Wolfowitz was investigated for passing classified information through AIPAC, the same organization that Franklin is charged with passing state secrets to.

Wolfowitz, who at the time was working for the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency (ACDA), was himself brought in by yet another high level alleged leaker, Richard Perle. Perle, too, is being investigated in the current AIPAC case.

Perle, who most recently served as chairman of the Pentagon Defense Policy Board and quietly resigned after the AIPAC case broke, was alleged to have passed on highly classified information to the Israeli embassy when he was a foreign policy aide for Senator Henry M. “Scoop” Jackson in 1970.

Perle was instrumental in bringing Feith into several positions, starting in the early 80s. By the mid-1980s Feith was relieved of his clearances for allegations of passing secrets to AIPAC, bringing the question of clearances full circle.

    Rumsfeld seen to reinstate clearances

Despite their checkered past, Rumsfeld’s Pentagon reissued clearances to Feith, Perle and Wolfowitz. Clearances were also issued to several of Feith’s consultants, some of whom were major players in the Iran Contra scandal.

The Iran Contra scandal implicated then-President Reagan, Vice President George H. W. Bush, and nearly the entire senior level of the administration in a weapons trafficking operation in which the US sold arms to its avowed enemy Iran. The money was then funneled to the Contras in Nicaragua, a group of anti-communists fighting the then seated regime of the Socialist Sandinistas, in order to subsidize a grassroots uprising. Feith’s team of consultants included such Iran Contra luminaries as Michael Ledeen and his go-to Iran arms merchant, Manucher Gorbanifar.

One former intelligence source said only an official of Rumsfeld’s seniority could reissue clearances after they had been revoked.

  26. JTitor Says:

Comment by ace — Neo-conservatism is a product of Leo Strauss, and Leo Strauss was a product of GWF Hegel and Machiavelli. Educated politicians from both parties see things in political philosophies as opposed to real world situations, thus solutions. The clinton’s have a Hobbsian view of society, where as securing the individual freedom of individuals, leaving the achievement of positive freedom or autonomy to the realm of morality and ethics. Where as Hegel from Strauss’s view; “One we realize that out principles of action having no other support than our blind choice, we really do not beleive in them anymore. We cannot live any more as responsible beings…The more we cultivate reason the more we cultivate nihilism …The inescapable practical consequence of nihilism is fanatical obscurantism.”

What Strauss is saying is that an independent free society (liberal society) will eventually reject all distinctions in moral or religious value and a willingness to repudiate all previous theories of morality or religious belief, thus a society that cannot be controlled and is destined to fail. Further, as “responsible beings” (The Wise) a “noble lie” can be used to control society for the greater good of the wise few. That the governing body has a duty to do whatever it takes to assure that any information towards this end is held from society. That any means justifies this end. This is critical to understanding neo-conservative belligerence towards national and world policy. Example, Straussian’s would view the 78% of Americans that want to end the war in Iraq as a faction of society not knowing what is in it’s own best interest. So, what is viewed as a belligerent foriegn policy by society, is from a Straussian’s view not important; “a relatively unimportant feature of the system”. Understanding this gives greater insight into why Alberto Gonzales won’t step down. Why invading Iran is imperative to controlling the worlds resources. Straussian’s believe in perpetual war, because through war, and fear, society can be more easily managed.

  33. labs Says:

the state department is furious? uh…yeah…riiiiight. sleeza is creaming in her jeans because cheney is finally including her in a delightfully bloodcurdling plan. state is loving every minute of it.

  34. OutSourced Says:

Policy disagreements are one thing, though the VP has no formal or independent role in making or implementing policy. With respect to his or her purported “executive authority”, the VP serves at the pleasure of the President more completely than any US Attorney. A “reality” this VP has tried mightily to ignore and which this President lacks the confidence to assert. That’s called a power vacuum in the office of the President.

But a “policy disagreement” that causes us to go to war or commit acts that would justify another country in declaring war on us amounts to treason.

  36. Kate Henry Says:

“And as I expected they removed my posting elaborating on the control of our republic by an ethnic minority. TP has its censors in high gear.”

No Shirley, they have posted every one of your rants. You just need to be patient. Posts don’t always immediately show up. You are not being censored (unfortunately).

  37. Devil's Advocate Says:

Meanwhile, Norman Podhoretz “prayed” for Bush to bomb Iran in an Op-Ed in the WSJ.

What is it going to take to remove the Neo-scum and Cheney from the government? These demented assholes are hell-bent on spreading death and destruction in the Middle East for the sole benefit of Israel.

We’ll be lucky if they don’t start WWIII before the summer is over.

  38. curmudgeon Says:

Imagine the collision of wills under this scenario: 1) The Boosh Crime Family has sold Halliburton short, potentially cashing in on a windfall if the stock price falls. 2) Deadeye Dick, on the other hand, doing everything possible to increase the stock price of Halliburton, which has tripled already since he took office. Cheney’s motives? According to a December 23, 2003 article in the Arizona Star, “…Cheney still has financial ties to Halliburton, despite his denials. He continues to receive deferred compensation from the company, including payments of about $150,000 in 2001 and $160,000 in 2002. Additional payments are forthcoming. In addition, the vice president has some 433,000 shares of unexercised Halliburton stock options, due to expire between 2007 and late 2009. Cheney has said he will donate the options to charities. But the options will have value only if Halliburton’s stock price improves.” So, if Deadeye’s dreams of a windfall come true, any guesses as to which charity will receive those millions? Himself, perhaps?

  39. SKdeA Says:

How about we have Condi and Dick face off in nude mud-wrestling?
A little levity with you horror, folks…

  40. angryvietnamvet Says:

So, Israel and its agents and dual citizen holders continue to run U.S. foreign policy….? Is this not TREASON?

  41. bob Says:

…well, of course I am certain that Anaconda Rice is telling the truth here..

  42. Jeff Says:

Combine this with the story just two above this one.. http://thinkprogress.org/ 2007/ 06/ 02/ risking-nuclear-war-neocons-tried-to-reverse-china-policy/
and you have the “what if they threw a war and nobody showed up” scenario. We don’t have what it takes to take Iraq, much less Iran AND China. Jeez these neocons get in office for 6 years and all they can do is wet themselves trying for WWIII.

  43. DreamCrusher Says:

Wow, a left-wing blog puts out rumors about Cheney saying stuff, the New York Times takes it as fact, and Think Progress guzzles their balls. What’s new?

  44. Robert S. Finnegan Says:

Interesting how dreamidiot has the balls to still support his dying masters. I wonder if he knows his fate and the fate of others like him who put these murdering, criminal monsters in power.

There will be retribution and a probable genocide, or redneck pogrom, sweeping America clear of these illiterate, godsmacked, mentally retarded parasites that have cost Americans their immediate future, and the lives of their loved ones and driven them into a black hole of poverty.
