VFW urges military to back off activists.»

“The nation’s largest combat veterans group on Friday urged the military to ‘exercise a little common sense’ and call off its investigation of Iraq war veterans who wore their uniforms during war protests. ‘Trying to hush up and punish fellow Americans for exercising the same democratic right we’re trying to instill in Iraq is not what we’re all about,’ said Gary Kurpius, national commander of the 2.4-million-member Veterans of Foreign Wars.” Good for them.

Democracies, and the military, still have RULES. You cannot legally protest while in uniform.

  2. Jay Randal Says:

I hope they succeed, but Bush hates soldiers and just uses them for cannon fodder.

  3. Jake Says:

I urge the VFW should back off the military.

  4. Oversight is a Bitch. Says:

The Commander Guy and Republicans in general don’t care about veterans or what veterans think.

  5. Jake Says:

Actually, the Commander Guy and many Republicans ARE veterans.

  6. unbelievable Says:

The blatant hypocrisy of Dictator Bush’s Regime is more and more apparent each time they do what they say not to do, and don’t do what they say to do.

Yes, let’s spread Democracy while denying it to our own people. Freaking hypocrites.

  7. unbelievable Says:

    Jake -

STFU. You don’t even know how the government passes a bill, how are we expected to believe you’re right about anything else the government does?

Combat veterans? Ha ha. Pretty funny, Jake. Make a list of the administration members who have been the architects of the Iraqi occupation, starting with GWB and working down through the ranks of neocons. Look them up and get back to us with how many of them have ever served the US in combat.

It’s going to be a short or non-existent, list.

  9. GSD Says:

Besides the Republicans need to save their energy in order to continue attacking each other, attacking workers at their RNC phone banks, attacking the Whithouse for posting pictures of Mary Cheney and her lesbian lover and calling them “parents”, attacking Bush for betraying the Republicans on immigration, attacking Bush for “negotiating with evil” by meeting with the Syrians and the Iranians and also for negotiating with terrorist groups in Iraq and for negotiating with Al Sadr.

Save your energy Republicans, you have lots of internal purges and fights to come.

    -GSD

  10. Zooey Says:

    Jake’s problem:

Authoritarian submission — a high degree of submission to the authorities who are perceived to be established and legitimate in the society in which one lives. “It is good to have a strong authoritarian leader.”

  13. Oldwolf63 Says:

Since when does this administration concern themselves with RULES. It is pretty piss poor reason to discharge a veteran who has served his country and is just in the IRR to finish out his obligation. You want to jack this guy up and yet you sit here and defend all of these useless idiots who break RULES left and right. I am glad to be a Veteran of Foreign Wars and hope they continue to stick up for this Marine.

  14. justice Says:

poor dumb jake. he doesn’t ever know even the basic facts.
the man is NO LONGER in the military, his anti war activism began AFTER his discharge.

Maybe I should start going to the local chapter again and see if the sentiment has swung back to reality.

Yeah, Zooey, that is pure Jake.
    Funniest part:

1: Faulty reasoning — RWAs are more likely to:

    * Make many incorrect inferences from evidence.
    * Hold contradictory ideas leading them to ‘speak out of both sides of their mouths.’
    * Uncritically accept that many problems are ‘our most serious problem.’
    * Uncritically accept insufficient evidence that supports their beliefs.
    * Uncritically trust people who tell them what they want to hear.
    * Use many double standards in their thinking and judgments.

    That link was awesome.

It also described my supervisor at school. She is so delusional that it constantly shocks me and my colleagues how distorted her views are. And of course, there are many people in positions of authority like that - especially in the Republican party.

How do we get them out?

  24. Devil's Advocate Says:

‘Trying to hush up and punish fellow Americans for exercising the same democratic right we’re trying to instill in Iraq is not what we’re all about,’

    *************
This is vintage praddle from someone who can’t be bothered to think. Democracies, insofar as they actually exist, are all about questioning the rules. As for the military…. well, f*ck the military. It is a regimented, highly authoritarian culture - the very antithesis of a democracy.

Trolls don’t understand any of this.

  26. joe Says:

Wow, the VFW has been in the pocket of the Republicans and hawks for decades, and was quite loud in their denunciation of war protestors as traitors at the beginning of the war.

Face it, Jakey - no one who actually served in the military can stand to be around you people. You remember that structural, permanent majority your party used to have among the public when it came to military affairs and defense?

    Say buh-bye, Jake. All done!

  27. michael Says:

“call off its investigation of Iraq war veterans who wore their uniforms during war protests”

That uniform is the property of the U.S. Government! Wear it during a protest against the government, suffer the consequences!

Hardly! They are upset because we are fighting a liberal war! What do I mean by a liberal war? Simple:

    Lie about the military!
    Compare them to Nazis!
Accuse them of terrorizing women and children in the middle of night
    Accuse them of torture!
Make them fight our enemies with one hand tied behind their backs!

And who does all this? You pukes!

  29. fuzzwald Says:

That uniform is the property of the U.S. Government! Wear it during a protest against the government, suffer the consequences!
    *********************************************
No, junior. We bought our own uniforms. I OWN the old Navy blues that no longer fit. If I want to wear them to a protest, I will do it. You and your Sgt. Rock wannabee barfly buddies can choke on it.

Better yet, get your coward ass down to the recruiting office and get your own uniform. Then you can lecture vets about how and when to wear it.

Why do you pretend to care about The Uniform when you obviously hate the person inside it?

You’re cot damn right they’re hypocrites. Those protesting veterans should be investigated to the full extent of the la… screw it, they should be strung up for treason!!!

Is there some sort of Saturday virus that would disable both of their brain cells?

  35. veritas Says:

Seems they conveniently forget first amendment rights when it comes to individuals speaking their Truth, doesn’t it? Of course, in true fascism, there are no individual rights so that’s precisely why that directive against these Vets was given. Anyone still calling this a true democracy??

  36. veritas Says:

This administration is not only a “conspiracy of dunces” but a “conspiracy of hypocrites” as well…..how about combining these two truths and settling on a “conspiracy of hypocritical dunces”?? Now that’s a moniker that’s totally apropos.

  37. veritas Says:

#34 The main qualification for a troll is flagrant and total ignorance, followed in short order by a defined lack of synaptic activity in the brain - trolls ARE the epitome of hypocritical idiocy so the concept of a “idiot troll” is totally redundant.

like i stated yesterday…troll is a juvenile’s passtime. the fact that they never admit common ground, never admit that they’re wrong, and are so utterly sure that their opinion is valued, or that anyone may be know more than they do is a dead give away.

that “know it all” attitude speaks volumes. it tell us they can’t be more than 13.

  41. Helen Rainier Says:

It’s about damned time that the VFW stands up for veterans and what is legally right and wrong. It grates on my nerves whenever I’ve seen them honor that yellow-bellied Bush by asking him to speak at their conventions. Bush has no concept of the values involved with being an honorable member of the US Armed Forces. The slimy wimp couldn’t even hack a 4-year legal obligation to the Texas Air Guard…that is truly pathetic.

  44. Kate Henry Says:

Ok, I get it. A soldier can wear their uniform when they go into a bar or a brothel, but they can’t wear their uniform while walking in a peace march. Makes perfect sense to me.

Now tell me, if the soldiers had been marching in a parade supporting George Bush and Company, do you think that they would be in trouble? I doubt it.

Nice post. Thanks for your service
Veteran here and proud of my service as well.

BTW, I have worn my jacket to peace protests and VA protests.

  47. Nance Says:

Gee, how many Viet Nam vets went home and changed into a suit and tie to protest? If you put your life on the line, then you sure have earned the right to protest, wearing the uniform or whatever you damn please! If you haven’t served, then shut up.

  48. MAF54 Says:

Isn’t he the guy who was heckling the Gonzales hearing? Holding up that placard saying how many times Gonzales said “I don’t recall”?

It’s no wonder he’s being made into an example by the administration. Sucks to be him.

  49. upside00 Says:

I came back from Vietnam and joined the protest during the effort to shut down DC while still on Active Duty and threw my medals over the WH fence. I found out later that friends of mine were arrested and given Dishonorable Discharges for doing the same thing.

Some things don’t change…. just the scumbags in higher office who have never served their country in combat and are still leading this country with no appreciation or acceptance of the sacrifice made by the real patriots, the ones who gave their lives for their COUNTRY, not for the slimeballs in higher office.

I salute all of the true heroes!!

  50. Helen Rainier Says:

#46 — Wayne, Thanks and likewise, I thank you for your service. Had to go to the Puget Sound VA Med Center the other day to catch a shuttle. The lovely gent at the info desk was very helpful. Determined he was a WW II vet (ETO) and thanked him for his sacrifices all those years ago. I’m such an emotional for vets — esp. WW II vets. My father was a WW II vet (with 5 battle stars) and since he is now deceased, I honor his memory by thanking every vet I meet for their sacrifices. It’s a small thing, but it’s so satisfying to witness their humble attitudes and thanks for the gesture.

  51. loretta Says:

now this should go a long way towards improving morale for our troops….

  52. Just some guy Says:

Even though I kind of agree with what these guys were doing, they were in the wrong. They are still under contract and subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). An enlistment in the Marines is 8 years, which is usually 4 years active with 4 years in the inactive ready reserve (IRR). If they hadn’t decided to wear their uniforms (that do have the marine emblem on them), they would’ve been fine. Insulting an officer wasn’t a good idea either.

  53. QUALAR Says:

Most likely this was initiated by the Vice F**ker. How could Bush and Cheney possibly restore honor to the White House when neither has any concept of what the word means? Cheney needs to make three copies of his five Viet Nam deferments and shove all of them up his arse. I’d gladly put on my Viet Nam Era uniform to escort that bastard to the Hague for a war crimes trial. He has disgraced those who have faithfully served this country.
