Boehner will try to force Jefferson expulsion.

“House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) moved quickly to force the expulsion of Rep. William Jefferson (D-LA) from Congress following his indictment Monday on federal corruption charges. The Republican leader will ask members of the House to vote on a resolution requiring the ethics committee to review the indictment filed against him in order to seek his expulsion from the House, according to his office.”

VERSUS

Boehner on the retirement of criminally-indicted Rep. Tom DeLay (R-TX), April 2006:

The country owes Tom a great debt of gratitude for helping lead America in a new direction — a direction outlined in the Contract with America that saw balanced budgets, historic welfare reforms, lower taxes, regulatory relief, and a renewed respect for the sanctity of life.

He has served our nation with integrity and honor, and I’m honored to call him my colleague and friend.

  1. Oversight is a Bitch. Says:

Was he CRYING when he made this statement?

  2. heyzeus Says:

(Boehner, with his back braced against his closet door, as the skeletons begin to spill out:)

    "Look! Over there!"

  3. Spudge_Boy Says:

I agree with Boner for once. Jefferson needs to go.

  4. dogjudge Says:

Boehner is totally out of luck and he should KNOW that.

Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. was thrown out of Congress for ethics issues. The matter went to the Supreme Court and they ruled against Congress on the issue.

This type of thing was resolved in 1970 Powell versus McCormack.

  5. samik Says:

I do agree with Bohner on this one. It shouldn't matter if you're democratic or republican, if you get indicted, you get the boot.

Yes though, its a shame he wasn't as brutal with Delay, but thats how it always is.

  7. Thom Says:

And his resignation came, what - seven months afer he was indicted? Am I wrong about that?

  8. Your Conscience Says:

What was that minority, impotent, irrelevent hypocrite....did you say something? Yeah thought not.

  9. TheToonGuy Says:

Absolutely. All corrupt politicians must go, no matter how much water they've carried for your party, Boehner!

  10. Krazny Says:

Maybe the republican shouldn't have changed the rules about indicted congressmen then.

  11. tarazan Says:

Did Boehner cry when Delay left him..?!

  12. oldtree Says:

based on what bonedoctor has said, he should resign knowing he has helped obstruct justice in the matter of USA v. T. Delay. How many other crimes has he committed? $880K for an audio tape talking to newt? what did you say bone? are you that embarrassed that you would pay nearly a million bucks for a cassette tape?
guess we should have the right to know what you are so afraid of. If we really had a radical left wing spin machine, the following headline might be suggested; "Boehner admits to being a part of Jefferson's scheme with Tom Delay and aided their plot to destroy the Mississippi river basin"
damn truth and it's liberal bias, damn it all

  13. labs Says:

    jefferson should resign.
if he's adjudicated innocent fine...let him run again.

i'm not going to say i agree with anything boner says though.

    Pelosi out-maneuvered.

    Again.

Pretty soon we'll have to ask if it is incompetence, or willful deception.

So far it ain't looking good.

  15. snarkmaster Says:

Jefferson needs to go. If Nancy can't or won't, then bully for Boehner, even if he is a big hypocrite and a Republican... but I repeat myself.

  16. President Clinton Says:

oh please, this is like what Pelosi said about Jefferson versus what she said about Delay.

my poor, naive, uneducated, dumb sycophant followers.

we do the same thing all the time.

we side with our party members and throw Republicans under the bus all the time.

Got it wrong boy, that is our Creed, the Democratic party creed!

while we attack Halliburton, we own stock with Halliburton. While we attack oil companies, we have stocks in oil companies.

while we complain that minorities aren't hired, we don't hire minorities.

while Edward, Kerry, me, my wife, murtha, pelosi, etc whine about taxes, we don't pay anywhere near the amount of taxes others pay.

while we cry about global warming, we use all type of private jet planes, SUVs, etc that pollute more than anything that the average american might do or use.

we trash and attack capitalism at any chance we have, we don't want capitalsim for the masses, yet we use capitalism to be filthy rich.

yes, my Democratic sycophant followers, do as I say and not as I do.

    Yep, sure is.

    (Boehner knows better.....)

  20. KRank Says:

Hey, Prez C! You gonna try to resurrect your "Republican ethics rules require immediate expulsion" trick again?

Should we give William Jefferson the same eight months that it took Tom Delay to resign? Or less, because Jefferson doesn't have a party primary to run in over the next eight months?

  21. Candyce Says:

Of course Jefferson should go. But we don't need that crybaby, criminal-defending hypocrite to tell us that.

  22. solai Says:

Innocent until proven guilty still stands, doesn't it? But if this succeeds and Jefferson goes, well the same standard need apply when Ted Stevens and Jerry Lewis are indicted.

  23. Lesly Says:

What a jackass. Still, I'd support giving Jefferson the third degree based on whatever new ethics rules the Democrats passed.

Yep, and it's also "I'm not beholding any favors to the Lobbyist that leases my apartment at a 'discount' for me" Boehner. Not to mention, ignore my involvement with Abramoff, and ignore my involvement in the "Student Loan Scandal/Scam" Boehner. And last but not least, forget that I pretend to be a "Strong" leader, when I can cry like an "actress" at the drop of a hat, Boehner...

  43. KRank Says:

There are two separate points here:

one, the more critical point, is the likelihood the Rep. Jefferson is monstrously corrupt. As such, it is the shame of his district that they returned him to Congress last November, and he should resign his seat today.

the second, more amusing point, is the predictable double-standard of the right wing -- in this case, House MINORITY leader John "the Boner" Boehner. He demands that Jefferson be expelled from the House, yet refused to call for similar action when Tom Delay was indicted in September 2005. Why the different responses to remarkably similar circumstances?

The only clear differences are race and political party. So either Boehner is a racist or he's a partisan hack. Either way, he's got no credibility.

(By the way, my money's on political hack.)

Jefferson may be 100% guilty - we will know soon enough - and his punishment should be swift and just. But for the time being, Boehner should keep his mouth shut - whe he opens his mouth he talks nonsense, or, as last week, he blubbers nonsense.

This is a little more simple, but consider the source.

  64. badger Says:

House Republican leaders have not discussed expelling Ohio GOP Rep Bob Ney from Congress if he does not immediately resign, House Majority Leader John Boehner told reporters today.

Until Ney enters a formal guilty plea on Oct 13, Boehner said it's possible he could change his mind, or details of the plea agreement could change.

"A lot of things are going to happen between now and then and I would prefer to allow this decision to be his. Until he has his day in court, I don't think it's up to me to comment what he should or shouldn't do."

Is it too much to ask to keep straight two different concepts?

One: Jefferson looks very guilty and should go.

Two: Boehner's double standard regarding House members under indictment says a lot about the Republican leadership and should be exposed.

I think both concepts can be discussed without them morphing into "TP is claiming two wrongs make a right." Most of us here (trolls excepted) can harbor two or more different ideas in our heads at the same time.

  69. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) Says:

Second, a single of anything doesn't exactly make a "squad".

Third, why are you only intereted in being a whiny little b*tch and never interested in actually discussing matters? Did you even bother to see that the vast majority (if not every sinlge last post) here (and the other Jefferson thread) is saying he's gotta go? I guess that just makes you another typically ill-informed, uninterested in truth righty.

  83. Jay Randal Says:

BONER does NOT control the House of Representatives. It's up to Speaker of the House Pelosi to decide if and when Jefferson resigns from his House seat.

  84. Adam Says:

Actually, it's not up to the Speaker when / if Jefferson resigns. It's up to him. It would set a bad precedent to expel any un-convicted Congressman based on an indictment. He has not been convicted (yet).

I think the appropriate steps would be to strip Jefferson of his remaining committee assignment. And what else is there to do? They can't stop him from voting on things on the House floor (which they shouldn't try to do). They could expel him from the Democratic caucus, but would that really make any difference?

I do not see but one poster who is a democrat calling for Jefferson to remain. So m12...show us all of those who are demanding he stay. Much like a Rush follower they claim something that isnt even true or can be backed up with evidence. They hope by just saying it that it becomes gospel....Such a pathetic batch of liars

  90. Gordon Smith Says:

Foster Brooks made a nice living as a very convincing drunk in his comedy act. To bad the congressman from Ohio isn't acting. I do agree that congressman Jefferson must be dealt with but can we please try and exercise a little consistency here. There are, after all, a couple more of these indictments on the way.

  91. nullSteve Jarvis Says:

Looks bad for Jefferson. Dispite all the reported evidence it should be business as usual until he is proven guilty. There is no comparison as far as amount of courruption Delay got away with, even if Jeffersonis found guilty. Until keep working as usual. They are all corrupt, revolt stop the war before 08

  92. nullB82 Says:

Here we go again...white america commits a crime there is every reasonable doubt issue in the book put up as to why they can't remove the person or put them in jail or an outright blatent, pardon the person, using it wasn't their fault, they're just the scapegoat. When a minority is involved in the same type of crime, it's lynch-em...throw the book at him. Yes, Jefferson should go to jail if he is convicted (personally, I wish there was a17th indictment... for being stupid). However, 235 years? Second, should he be removed before conviction? Not if you haven't done it for the previous indicted Congressmen. So now, Congress gets morals and want to do what's right? Pl..e.a.s.e!This is the same argument the rest of the world uses when discussing our foreign policy the ss is lopesided. Timing is the problem. Congress needed to fixed this problem when they first arrived in office. It was a problem before they arrived, during they're arrival and still is today. Instead of voting to correct this problem when they first arrived, they elected to do nothing. Now, they want to pass legislation? So afraid it'll hurt them in the polls. Jefferson should be afforded the same bs cover they gave to Tom Delay and the rest of the gang. Does anyone think Bush's pardon of libby will mean he'll pardon Jefferson. if you do, I have some swampland for you. On a final note, we've known for the past 200 plus years, what the rest of the world is just beginning to realize, that america's fairness is all smoke and mirrors. So, give the delay's of the world the ability to decide when, where and how they should bow out. Allowing them to leave gracefully with their dignity intact and march the jefferson's of the world out in handcuffs. Whiny or not, i don't think so.
