CBS: Rep. Jefferson indicted.

By Nico Pitney on Jun 4th, 2007 at 12:48 pm

CBS: Rep. Jefferson indicted.

“Sources tell CBS News that Congressman William Jefferson (D-LA) has been indicted on more than a dozen counts involving public corruption. Details soon.”

UPDATE: From the WaPo:

Federal prosecutors are seeking an indictment today against Rep. William J. Jefferson (D-La.) in a longstanding FBI corruption probe centering on allegations that he took bribes to promote high-tech business ventures in Africa, sources familiar with the investigation said.

Prosecutors are presenting the case to grand jurors in Alexandria today, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because no charges have yet been filed.

If filed, the indictment would cap a long and tumultuous investigation that was stalled for months because of a legal battle over the constitutionality of an FBI raid on Jefferson’s office last May. The raid came after the FBI found $90,000 in the freezer of his Capitol Hill home.

UPDATE II: “A Justice Department official familiar with the case said the indictment outlining the evidence against Jefferson is more than an inch thick and charges the congressman with crimes that could keep him in prison for up to 200 years.”

UPDATE III: According to ABC, the 16 count indictment has been returned, and “the charges include racketeering, solicitation of bribes, honest services wire fraud, money laundering, obstruction of justice, violating the foreign corrupt practices act, and conspiracy.”

UPDATE IV:
Read the full indictment.

Of course Bushies will point to this and say that both parties are equally corrupt……There was I guy I served over seas with who would constantly lose at whatever card game we happened to be playing. No one would give him shit about the obvious disparity between his winning and losing hands, but inevitably he’d win a hand and immediately start yelling and bragging as if winning one hand was a vindication of all his loses. GOPers remind me of that guy when they try to hide their innumerable corruptions by pointing to the relatively few corruptions of Democrats. I say, if the Republicans want the justice system to determine who is and isn’t corrupt, they should start asking the WH to release information rather than stonewalling, hiding and destroying it, and let the chips fall where they may. But who thinks the Bush WH wants to allow the law to determine their fate when their corruptions are so clearly violations of federal law? Who thinks Republicans can win more hands than the Democrats in a fair game?

  72. Bruce Gorton says:

    CaptainMantastic

No, they are paid plenty and generally have money to start off with (A campaign costs quite a bit.)

No the real problem lies in the fact that politics often takes the same ability set as being a conman. Actual ability to lead is often secondary to one’s ability to engender trust.

Think about the Bush/Kerry clash. The basic fact was that Bush came across as someone you could have a beer with, and Kerry came across as somebody you would expect to answer the Adams’ family door.

Unfortunately, we haven’t yet figured out a better political system then the one currently, so to compensate for this Americans need to be willing to keep an eye on their government and vote out the conmen.

BS, Armitage “outed” Valarie Plame, not Libby or any other top official of the Bush administration.

Patrick Fitzgerald knew this from the beggining and he chose to keep on with the case, the question is why?

    Armitage, NOT Libby outed Plame.

furthermore, please tell me, what were you doing on June 4, 3:34pm?

If you can remember this, then go ahead and condemn Libby, other wise, shut up.

I couldn’t even remember how many women I did before I lied about Monica.

I couldn’t even remember whether or not I gave orders to go after Bin Laden.

Bruce. I believe in the free market. I’m sure it’s not the only answer, but the idea is to pay the officials more to 1): get more people interested in doing the work and b): reduce the temptation for corruption by compensating those elected to the point where they don’t need the money.

For example: if Jefferson’s position paid $500,000 a year, he probably would have been beat out by someone more qualified that would be attracted to the money, but even if he wasn’t, it would create incentive for Jefferson not to sell out his constituents, a): because he already has the money and 2): would less likely risk the higher paying position.

  145. Crump's Brother says:

    CompTROLLER V-1,

Libby deserves a solid prison sentence and here’s why…

    Federal Sentencing for Dummies

This lesson is designed for those of you who are not lawyers or otherwise inclined to wade through the United States Sentencing Guidelines in order to understand the issues that Judge Reggie Walton has to decide before sentencing Scooter Libby. Here is all you need to know:

In federal court, sentences are determined using a system of guidelines that has two main components: a defendant’s criminal history and an “offense level” based on the nature of the crimes for which he was convicted. After someone is convicted of a crime, a probation officer prepares a report that lays out a preliminary calculation of these factors, which results in a recommended sentencing range. The probation officer also identifies possible grounds for downward or upward departures from that range. The government and the defense then argue about the findings and calculations in the report, submit memos and make oral presentations, after which the judge decides what sentence to impose. Judges don’t have to follow the guidelines, but they usually do.

Everyone in the case thus far — the probation officer, the defense attorneys, and the prosecutors — agrees that the base offense level for Libby is 15 to 21 months. The Special Counsel is arguing, however, that, under the federal sentencing guidelines, the court should increase this range because Libby’s perjury and obstruction of justice interfered with an investigation into possible violations of the Intelligence Identities Protection Act and the Espionage Act. If the court accepts this argument, Libby could receive a sentence ranging from 30 to 37 months.

The defense, on the other hand, is arguing that the judge should not follow the guidelines at all. Instead, they say, Libby should merely be sentenced to probation because: (1) he has an outstanding record of government service; (2) he will lose his law license; (3) he and his family have suffered, financially and otherwise, as a result of the prosecution; (4) his conduct was an aberration; and (5) he is unlikely to commit crimes in the future.

Given that, as the government points out, Libby used his position in the White House to commit the crime for which he was convicted; that he has not used his law license for many years and would likely never have to again; that the families of all defendants’ suffer and that, unlike most defendants, Libby has a massive legal defense trust fund; that he committed his crime not once, but four times over a period of many months; and that doesn’t think he did anything wrong, I suspect the judge will not be giving Libby probation. Indeed — for what it’s worth — I consider it far more likely that he will receive a sentence of approximately 30 months.

This sort of statement is exactly what my comment at #1 was in reference to. Thank you for illustrating my point so beautifully, dolt.

Exactly, the media and the Democratic Party has been completly silent about this.

If it would have been a Republican, it would have been day in and day out news about what the FBI and the DOJ were investigating.

But since it is a Democratic politician, it must be kept silent.

Where is the left wing outrage against Pelosi, who knew exactly what Jefferson had done and was more than willing to put him in leadership position?

where i the outrage from my side? where?

Oops, another lil’ trooper walks into a battle of wits unarmed, claiming the GOP didn’t attack the raid on Jefferson’s office-And I’m guessing that Pelosi’s forced removal of Jefferson from the Ways & Means committee was somehow a reward for Jefferson’s corruption, at least with this lil’ trooper troll dedicated to The Glory Of All Things W

This is pure and utter horse shit!

The Democratic party was in full throttle defending this guy. Let us not forget that the Democratic party claimed that the Executive branch had over stepped its boundry by sending the FBI into Jefferson’s house.

Pelosi wanted to put him as chair of a few congressional committees. If it had not been for Republican pundits and Congressmen complaining, Jefferson would be in charge of a few committees right now.

Jefferson has been defended by the Democratic party time and time again.

    Comment by President Clinton — June 4, 2007 @ 1:35 pm

Sorry troll, Hastert and Boehner threw the biggest hissy fits about the search of Jefferson’s office, with Boehner claiming that it was a crisis that would be cleared up only by the Supreme Court looking at the “Separation Of Powers” the GOP otherwise didn’t give a damn about

So, Just for the troll who can’t make it’s points except by signing the name of a President it undoubtedly despises, and how frustrating for said pathetic troll must that be, having to use the name of a President FAR more popular with the public than W will ever be again

FBI Raid Hits a Constitutional Nerve

FBI Raid on Lawmaker’s Office Is Questioned

House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) expressed alarm at the raid. “The actions of the Justice Department in seeking and executing this warrant raise important Constitutional issues that go well beyond the specifics of this case,” he said in a lengthy statement released last night.

“Insofar as I am aware, since the founding of our Republic 219 years ago, the Justice Department has never found it necessary to do what it did Saturday night, crossing this Separation of Powers line, in order to successfully prosecute corruption by Members of Congress,” he said. “Nothing I have learned in the last 48 hours leads me to believe that there was any necessity to change the precedent established over those 219 years.”

Former House speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), in an e-mail to colleagues with the subject line “on the edge of a constitutional confrontation,” called the Saturday night raid “the most blatant violation of the Constitutional Separation of Powers in my lifetime.” He urged President Bush to discipline or fire “whoever exhibited this extraordinary violation.”

Officials Defend Raid on Lawmaker’s Office

House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) complained directly to President Bush yesterday about the FBI raid, while House Majority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) predicted a constitutional showdown before the Supreme Court.

“My opinion is that they took the wrong path,” Hastert told reporters after his meeting with Bush in the White House. “They need to back up, and we need to go from there.”

The attorney general’s comments followed a series of sharply worded complaints from Republican leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (Tenn.) and Hastert, who said in a lengthy statement issued late Monday that the search raised “important Constitutional issues that go well beyond the specifics of this case.” Boehner yesterday referred to the search as the “Justice Department’s invasion of the legislative branch.”

“I have got to believe, at the end of the day, it is going to end up across the street at the Supreme Court,” Boehner said. “I don’t see anything short of that.”

Speaker Hastert Protests to Bush Over Raid

F.B.I. RAID DIVIDES G.O.P. LAWMAKERS AND WHITE HOUSE

Hastert tells President Bush FBI raid was unconstitutional

In the Speaker’s lengthy statement, Hastert complained that the seizure of legislative papers, no matter how innocuous, was a violation of the “the principles of Separation of Powers, the independence of the Legislative Branch, and the protections afforded by the Speech and Debate clause of the Constitution.”

Hastert also singled out Attorney General Alberto Gonzales in that statement: “It would appear that the Attorney General himself was aware that Separation of Powers concerns existed … because in seeking the warrant the FBI suggested to the judge procedures it would follow to deal with Constitutionally protected materials.”

“When I raise my right hand and swear to uphold the Constitution of the United States, I mean it,” Boehner said, referring to the oath members take at the beginning of each Congress. “[Justice Department employees] take the same oath, so somebody better start reading the Constitution down there.”

And hey, what do you know, if wasn’t enough for Hastert to criticize the raid on Jefferson’s office, no, Denny took the next step indeed

Hastert Demands FBI Return Items From Raid of Rep. Jefferson’s Office

And I blogged all about the GOP’s complete hypocrisy in rallying around Jefferson last May, so check out the archives

So next time, troll that can’t make it’s points without using Clinton’s name, maybe a little research before spewing your easily-debunked blather might do your arguments, not to mention your overall coherence, might do you some good

Mr. Monkey, perhaps you still have your head on backwards. You should have at least made an effort to pass BackTrack 101.

The indictment list for Rep. Jefferson is incredibly long. In this case, this is worse than anything that DeLay, Libby, Cunningham, and others could have cooked up, perhaps combined. I’m not thinking that the right *will* catch up, but that they have the option to do so. This is an indictment to “harp” on all right, because this indictment is rather stacked.

Finally, you don’t need to “caution the trolls.” Again, this is judgment day for Democratic hypocrisy, so step aside and don’t attempt to moderate a just debate. As well, fake condemnation of Mr. Jefferson in here from the usual lefties appears to serve only as an attempted silencer. You know, just an attempt to get the story out of the way.

See to a wingnut like C*nt – one *exception* proves the rule. It doesn’t matter how much of a culture of corruption he lives in, as long as one person on the other side is also corrupt in some way – his criminality is “excused”. Just like he doesn’t care if Abu Ghraib happens under Republican leadership, because he’s still not an “Islamic” terrorist! It doesn’t matter if he uses the same torture, and evil techniques as Saddam did – there are still boogeyman *terrorists* he can cite as being “worse”, therefore by his “moral-relativism”, he feels “good”…

If you go back on TP’s blog, you can see how they would announce on a daily basis when one Republican congressman was being visited by the FBI, when his business, or his wife was visited by the FBI, etc, etc.

why didn’t TP do the same thing when it came to Jefferson? why do they only put up the Jefferson story after he had been indicted? why didn’t they put up all the other stories against Jefferson? why did they wait until today to say anything about Jefferson?

only idiots on the left, would not see the huge hypocrisy.

this is a farce, a complete and utter farce.

If we on the left really cared about outing corruption, we would have treated Jefferson with teh same contempt that we have treated the Republican congressman that TP has blogged about.

we would have followed this case and blogged about this case the same way that we blog about when we believe there is Republican corruption.

Let’s see how thoroughly f*cked up you are on this, Daryll. First, the premise is wrong. Us ‘libs’ didn’t defend Jefferson. You pulled that one out of your butt and it bears no resemblance to the truth. Second. we don’t like people of either party lying, stealing, or cheating. Right-wingers like you don’t mind criminal behavior if it’s done by one of your own and benefits your party. Third, go take a look at the number of investigations, resignations, indictments, and convictions of Republicans in the White House and Congress in the past six years and compare it to those of the Democrats. I’ll get you started with some names: Ney, Cunningham, DeLay, Foggo, Allen, Safavian, Libby, Foley, Doolittle, Lewis, Renzi, …

Let me know if you want some more names. The list of Dems is a lot shorter. I’ll let you find those yourself. The bottom line is that you belong to the “immoral and sinful party”, according to your own definition. Pray for mercy.

  196. President Clinton says:

why don’t you go back and check out how many stories has done on Calvert, Doolittle and Bohner and then compare that to how many stories TP has done on William Jefferson.

You are so divorced from reality that it’s mind numbing to the average person, let alone thinking people. You trolls are pathetic…do you have any friends? Why come in here when your party doesn’t have the moral history to back up what you idiots are trying to espouse? Everyday you “trolls” (for lack of better term) come in here make your party look like a bunch of fools, spewing unsupported dribble as fact. Repeating the same thing and expecting a different outcome is the definition of ‘crazy’. Move along little trolls. Go back to that dark place under the bridge where you were found.

    Fact Check

    Stripped of committee membership:
On May 24, 2006, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi publicly requested his immediate resignation from the House Ways and Means Committee; he declined to do so.

On 15 June 2006, House Democrats voted to strip Jefferson of his committee assignment while the federal bribery investigation continues. Members approved the move after Jefferson repeatedly refused to step aside.

    (cont.)

On February 16, 2007, safely past the election all about GOP corruption, Speaker of the House Pelosi reinstates Jefferson to the Homeland Security Committee.

As for TP bias — before today, there were a dozen threads with “William Jefferson” and 459 about “Tom DeLay”. I believe that was the point being made earlier.

  208. Midori says:

    To Clinton-wannabe and Jake-ass,
If you want to complain about bias, why don’t you tell us how many threads redstate and other rightwing blogs devoted to the crimes of Duke Cunningham, Bob Ney, Tom Delay, or Rep. Calvert’s little parked car rendez-vous with a prostitute’s head in his unzipped lap?
BTW, Clinton-wannabe, for someone who calls the left “uneducated,” you certainly make a lot of spelling errors. I’m even willing to give the benefit of the doubt as typos for some of them, but not when you repeat the same ones over and over like “jealouse”(sic). You are certainly no graduate of Georgetown, Oxford and Yale like the real Clinton.

  209. CompTROLLER V-1 says:

    Sorry TripMaster Idiot,

I think I’ve read my “you’ve lost” statement pretty well before submitting it, and there’s no hypocrisy there, just spoofing your lousy tactics.

Apparently, you don’t know what the word “backtracking” means. Please offer substantial evidence to validate your claim before you go falsely accusing people. Your techniques didn’t work so well for the Duke boys, did it?

Let’s hope you’ll stumble back here to read this, thug.

06-05-07: A losing judgment day for TripMaster Monkey’s hypocrisy. Your downplaying of it failed, by the way. Hell, you even attempted to moderate the discussion and silence people, one by one! You probably didn’t even want TP to cover this story! Uh oh, this site may no longer be the leftist totalitarian breeding ground you once thought it was!

when hillary is elected she can pardon William Jefferson for a nice donation to her Presidential Library Fund
