Kristol turns on Bush.

By Nico Pitney on Jun 5th, 2007 at 11:01 pm

Kristol turns on Bush.

“Will Bush pardon Libby?” Weekly Standard editor William Kristol asks. “Apparently not — even if it means a man who worked closely with him and sought tirelessly to do what was right for the country goes to prison. … So much for loyalty, or decency, or courage. For President Bush, loyalty is apparently a one-way street; decency is something he’s for as long as he doesn’t have to take any risks in its behalf; and courage–well, that’s nowhere to be seen. Many of us used to respect President Bush. Can one respect him still?

(HT: Julia)

UPDATE: The Washington Post: “In the White House, Pardon Is A Topic Too Sensitive to Mention.

The prospect of a pardon has become so sensitive inside the West Wing that top aides have been kept out of the loop, and even Bush friends have been told not to bring it up with the president. In any debate, officials expect Vice President Cheney to favor a pardon, while other aides worry about the political consequences of stepping into a case that stems from the origins of the Iraq war and renewing questions about the truthfulness of the Bush administration.

yes, if he doesn’t pardon Libby.

(and gets us out of the war in Iraq)

as for Kristol–can anyone respect him? even if he does turn on Bush (he’s actually just one in a long list of folk for whom the koolaid is beginning to wear off.)

What took Kristol so long to know the real Bush?

kristol talking about respect… oh. my. god… this from the man who has been working from the karl rove manual of barely disguised defamation and slander, masked in war lust… what would YOU know of respect, william kristol…? absolutely nothing…

And, yes, I DO take it personally

  6. justme says:

Meh, he’s just worried this means he won’t get a pardon either.

  8. Some Guy says:

yes, if he doesn’t pardon Libby. (and gets us out of the war, and implements some real climate friendly policies, etc.)

as for respect for Kristol…i’m afraid not, even he does take Bush to task. he’s just one of many folk for whom the koolaid is beginning to wear off.

Hey, Kristol, are you Big Oil? Wall Street? Big Pharma? Multi-National? Of course not, you dope. You’re just a piece of sh—t mouth piece for the right-wing rag. And that includes Libby. Words of consolation: suck it up and learn to live with it.

  21. SouthWest Bob says:

Kristol exemplifies what has caused the neo-cons to crash. . . believing they can commit crimes, ignore the law or just screw over Americans and not be held responsible. He’s angry because one of their own has finally been held accountable. Bush will pardon Libby but not until he’s just about to leave office.

  22. Kilo says:

Yeah Kristol is turning on Bush for not pardoning Libby…. but on the basis that Libby is going to jail for doing nothing wrong.

I can’t think of an angle in which this is useful information.

Would it be equally important if Kristol turned on Cheney for not revealing the WMDs we found in the Iraqi-Al Qaeda Youth Club compound in Ramadi ?

  23. Jay Randal says:

Kristol is just trying to pressure Bush to pardon Libby a fellow Neocon.

There is a brain neuron that is telling him that the Presidential Library, undoubtedly funded by the military and oil companies that he made billions for, will be not only empty but absolutely empty on Saturday’s in the fall if he pardons this weasel now. Ya see, its not all hopeless in Chimpy’s brain. Tsk, tsk all you skeptics.

Libby’s appeal will drag this out till the end of this year, so if he serves time it would be about one year in prison, then Bush pardons him as he leaves office in January 2009.

How insanely reprehensible , contemptible and downright despicable is this Kristol-meth loser ?

Just like all the jackass neo-cons and Chimpy administration members, they aren’t upset at committing crimes ; they’re upset that one of them has been caught , convicted and sentenced.

WHAT THE HELL IS THAT ?

And these bits of dog dreck claim to be “patriots” ?

  31. Russ says:

This is nothing new for Kristol. He chastised Bush in 2001 for not starting a war with China over the 24 shot down airmen, and just a few weeks ago said Bush walks around with a kick me sigh on his back. The neocon code is forget morality just take what you want and the hell with everyone els.

This makes me SO want Bush to pardon Libby. With Kristol’s accuracy in punditry, this would surely result in Bush’s impeachment, or scabies or something.

  38. OutSourced says:

Advocating for a pardon for the man who covered up your own wrongdoing would be a further act of obstruction of justice. I’m sure Mr. Kristol doesn’t expect Mr. Cheney to do that.

The “honesty and loyalty” that so excites Mr. Kristol seems driven by a quest for power, and not an awareness of or respect for the Constitution, the law of the land, or responsible government. Mr. Kristol’s brand of “conservative” leadership is more common in the pages of a Mario Puzzo novel or the Bush White House than in the halls of a constitutional democracy.

    Comment by Jake — June 6, 2007 @ 12:54 am

Looks over the Constitution. Looks over the writings of the Framers explaining said Constitution. Nope, I don’t see “Politicize the Judicial Branch and Law Enforcement”. In fact…wait…*gasp* I do believe the Framers intended for the legal system (and that includes the Department of Justice, buddy) is supposed to be apolitical in its work. The Constitution and the Rule of Law are all that the courts, including the DoJ, are supposed to be beholden to.

You do not politicize the judicial system, or Rule of Law is second to political loyalty. When you join the DoJ, you swear an oath to serve the Constitution, the Rule of Law and We the People. Not Party, and not the President of the United States. The Constitution, the Rule of Law, and We the People. And, like most jobs at such levels of government, you protect those things you swore that oath to from enemies both foreign and domestic. Politicizing the Department of Justice is a clear and present danger to the Republic, and anyone engaging in such behavior is a domestic enemy.

  59. no name says:

Apparetnly Kristol thinks loyalty and decency involves ignoring that Libby is a convicted criminal. This is not so much against Bush as it is a defense of Libby and how “wronged” he is. Whatever happened to the conservative mantra of “taking responsibility” for oneself? Libby is and has been convicted and sentenced. He brought himself to ruin. He is an intelligent man, a lawyer no less, and willingly broke the law, perhaps thinking he would get “pardoned” by the useful idiot. The court of law, which Kristol and all the others who most likely think Libby is “innocent” (for how could such a nice and loyal servant of the Republican party be a criminal) found him guilty of obstruction and lying to the grand jury. He was not a servant of the people. He showed contempt for the people. He was only a loyal, pornography writing, servant of Cheney and the Republilcans. Mary Matalin and James Carville ought to read his book to “the children”

  60. doro says:

Well, so some of the “soon-to-be-indicteds” will have to think twice about keeping mum. Maybe sing like a bird and go for a deal, rather than hoping for presidential loyalty and pardon? Gooood thing.

Mr Kristol is not quite right in his mind, btw.

  61. tarazan says:

Kristol is mad because one of his PNAC buddies got caught,so he turned against Bush for not letting Libby go free by pardoning him.

He is talking about loyalty ..but to who? not to the American people, not the Constitution.. but to Scooter Libby !!

Kristol went further to even question the ‘respect’ to the President, because Libby was caught.

  62. Patrick says:

Bush and Cheney could care less about the political consequences of a Libby pardon. They know the American people (including Republicans) are walking away from them on every issue. Bush’s petulance and Cheney’s arrogance will only lead them further from rational governance. At this point they simple don’t give a shit.

  63. liz says:

ahould we all be thankful that kristol sees the truth and the light now……. cause he is on spot with this one….

Bush ain’t gonna help his pals that kept him out of trouble. He’s a big bully.

  64. Ben Dover says:

Billy Boy just doesn’t get it. NOT pardoning Libby is what will demonstrate “courage” on the part of Bush (can’t believe I actually want to see him succeed at something). Then again, considering that its from Kristol who has yet to be right on a single thing related to Iraq…I guess I’ll take what he says with a grain of salt.

  65. clb72 says:

thank you bill kristol for helping me to affirm my commitment to non-violence. Because if there is anyone I want to give a poch in the tuchus, it’s you, putzhead.

  66. LandSurveyor says:

    I predict a pardon, and I can’t wait.

  67. Prince Myshkin says:

Actually Kristol is being consistent here:

He seems to think that breaking the law is acceptable so long as it is for the right reasons, i.e. for the benefit of America.

Of course, one can then ask, how do we ensure that the reasons are right? In TV shows, the law-breaker is always excused or justified because he/she turns out to be right. Unfortunately, the world isn’t quite so simple as that; for example we can’t be sure someone is a terrorist- and treat them as such- unless they have been tried fairly.

In Libby’s case, he might well have served his country or whatever, but he’s been caught in a grubby scandal trying to cover up for the administration’s error. That isn’t the right reason for a pardon.

  68. kelley b. says:

If Kristol’s slamming Bu$h, it’s only because he’s following orders from Karl.

Kristol is a**hole and should not be listen to. He helped to promote this illegitimate presnut and his war. So Bill go F*ck yourself. Your option means nothing except to your small audience. Libby should go to jail directly to jail and not pass go. I’m sure one of these crooked repugs will start crying on the floor to get him pardoned. The Repugs are just one big war mongering joke.

  71. Lindsey says:

In all honesty when I saw that headline I had to check the calendar to see if it was April 1.

  72. HeartlandLiberal says:

Kristol is a chickenhawk neo-con proto-fascist lying war-monering running dog lack of the Bush/Cheney imperalism cabal. Kristol is a war criminal who should be hauled off to the Hague, tried, convicted, and locked away for the rest of his life. Since this man has been utterly, completely wrong at every step of the way for the past six years, one wonders how he even manages to cross the street each morning without a seeing eye dog.

  73. Kate Henry says:

“Many of us used to respect President Bush. Can one respect him still?”

I’m not quite sure that 28% of Americans equates to “many”, but in Kristol’s world, I guess it does. He want Bush to pardon someone who committed treason. How is that showing any support for this country?

  74. craig johnson says:

    Libby Pardon and Depraved Indifference
Not only did this administration cook up propaganda to lead America into war, it deliberately suppressed factual assessments of the dangers that would face our troops. The Military, the State Department and the CIA each clearly warned of the “harm’s way” our troops would encounter.
For political purposes these intelligence warnings were not only buried, they were actively shunned and ignored. This is criminal behavior which, with one hundred per cent certainty, led to troop’ deaths and maimings.
A Libby pardon would condone the establishment of a propaganda apparatus in the Executive branch. It would condone a conspiracy to provide false information to Congress. It would set free the sole conspirator caught criminally lying to protect his boss and other executive branch participants.
A Libby pardon would condone the criminal opposite of ’supporting the troops’ that in fact Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Feith and others actively participated false pronouncements which resulted in American deaths.
    (cognitorex)

  75. michael says:

Hell, this is a compliment if it is coming from Kristol

  76. CaptainMantastic says:

Libby worked hard for the country; as did Bill Clinton. You could make the argument that in both cases, it was that hard work and their positions and the zealous nature of the political opposition, that landed them in trouble they wouldn’t have been in, if the positions weren’t as scrutinized. Libby wasn’t guilty of the crime, he was guilty of the cover up – that’s a political crime. Clinton was guilty of infidelity in the white house. That’s not a crime, the crime was he lied under oath – to protect himself politically. The scrutiny comes from the nature of politics. If it’s more likely that you will be scrutinized more and more intensely until the opposition finds something to hang you on, it’s going to become more and more difficult to find people to do the jobs. Libby lied under oath. That is very significant. Bill lied under oath, too. Libby’s going to jail for 2 and a half years. Would you leave a good job to serve in an administration, when the goal of one half of the country or the other is intent on seeing you taken down? To the point they want you to go to jail? I’ll keep my day job.

  77. johnnyr says:

Bwahahahaha, Billy Boy can’t ‘respect’ Bush BECAUSE BE WON’T PARDON A CRIMINAL THAT PROTECTED HIS ASS!

I suppose Kristol’s idea of respectability is when you properly reward your criminal cohorts.

  78. tarazan says:

    #72 Captain,

Anybody with reasonable level of judgement will not compare the case of Clinton to the case of Libby,by any means .

I am neither ‘liberal’,nor supporter of Clinton..but logic dictates that the two issues are not at the same bar.

  80. heyzeus says:

    Captain:

Clinton lied to avoid being caught in an extra-marital affair.
A civil offense, by some standards. Not all standards.

Scooter Libby lied to obstruct a judicial investigation.
A criminal offense. By all standards.

    Clinton was tried, and aquitted.

    Libby was tried, and convicted.

  81. webslinger says:

You know its true when Jon Stewart says it. (and lets impeach Gonzo, Rice and Cheney!)

  82. kelso says:

Kristol will soon be calling Bush a Liberal.

  83. Croaker says:

. Libby wasn’t guilty of the crime, he was guilty of the cover up – that’s a political crime.

ahem… it’s absolutely amazing to me that conservatives think Libby’s behavior is OK in any way. He basically lied to protect himself from the bigger charge of exposing an undercover US agent. So we should pardon him for the lesser crime and ignore the obvious one? You people are pathetic, boot licking hacks. You don’t give a shit about the Constitution nor the rule of law- except in cases where your “enemies” are the target. You allow people like Scooter, Alberto, Tom, etc.. get away with CRIME because you support their political affiliation. You are more than happy to throw a 3rd strike petty criminal in prison for 20+ years for a lowly drug possession charge, yet an upper echelon US government figure commits a borderline treasonous act against the wife of a man who was critical of this administration’s LIES, and your twisted sense of justice forces you to scream for a presidential pardon. You people are fucking idiots.

  84. NoOneYouKnow says:

Jake, Clinton pardoned Marc Rich, not Frank Rich; btw, when are you going to take the GED test again?
Captain Mantastic, can we assume your day job is being Karl Rove and that you’re wearing leather underwear?

This isn’t as much of a stretch as you might think. One of those idiot Republicans on the debate last night said that Bush was a failure because he “spends like a Democrat”, or something like that. “If we’re going to spend stupidly, leave it to the Democrat professionals, rather than the amateur Republicans.”

I forget who it was and the precise wording, but this is close.

Bottom line, they’re already distancing themselves from their catastrophe of a president, and trying to recast him as some kind of confused Democrat wannabe. Disingenuous arsewipes, the lot of them.

  86. warren tarrah says:

Wingnuttia has been claiming for a while that their hero of 3 yrs ago -GDubb is not a “true” conservative. Its not conservatism that’s failed. Oh, no, its because GDubb is a spendthrift. Well, sheet, why should I believe what any “real conservative” says since they have been talking about what a wonderful Christian Corporate Compassionate Conservative GDubb is? This is like listening to Bill Kristol who’s been wrong about everything. My mama didn’t bring up no dummy.
