June 5th, 2007 at 11:53 amI think that Freudenthal would not pick Lynne Cheney unless he had to. Keep in mind that he is possibly selecting his opponent for the special election, and Lynne Cheney (for all her husband’s insanity) would be a very tough candidate (keep in mind that this is the state that re-elected Barbara Cubin, and Lynne Cheney is probably less crazy and more TV friendly than her). If Cubin’s name was offered, I don’t think Freudenthal would waste two seconds before putting a check mark next to it.

Mrs. Cheney is not even remotely qualified to be a Senator, but remember Mrs. Dole was manuvered into the Senate, but at least she was elected to the position. If Lynne is installed, then Dicky wants his wife to be president someday or at least another VP like himself.

I don’t believe Lynn Cheney is qualified. Hillary Clinton wasn’t qualified. Neither has or had any experience in domestic or foreign affairs. Neither, however Hillary does have one now, a record to fall back on. Oh, and one other side note.

A few months back, when there was a chance that a Democratic Senator from the Dakotas was going to die, repubs immediately got hot and bothered over the possibility that the Repub governor of that state could appoint a repub to his position and turn the majority in the Senate back to the repubs. Have we forgotten this episode that quickly? The governor of Wyoming is under absolutely NO constitutional restriction here. Why are we pretending that his only option is to appoint a repub? Possibly because Democrats are more dedicated to fair play and decency than Repubs.

June 5th, 2007 at 2:08 pm#45, from what I have read in news reports, the law in Wyoming does in fact require the governor to chose from three candidates put forward by the party of the deceased Senator. So in this fact, yes, the law does require nomination of a Republican to fill out the term.
