Military Denies Honorable Discharge To War Critic, Approves Pace’s Political Advocacy For Libby

pace_kokesk.jpgA military panel recommended this week that Iraq war veteran Marine Cpl. Adam Kokesh, “who wore his uniform during an anti-war protest, should lose his honorable discharge status, brushing away his claims that he was exercising his right to free speech.”

While the Marine Corps was actively working to repudiate “opposition groups and individuals” like Kokesh, Marine Gen. Peter Pace, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was advocating — in his official capacity — on behalf of “Scooter” Libby.

After Libby was convicted of “lying to investigators and a federal grand jury examining the leak of CIA operative Valerie Plame’s identity,” Pace wrote a letter endorsing Libby’s character, specifically noting his “selfless” nature and his penchant for examining decisions “legally and morally.”

I was always very impressed with Mr. Libby’s professionalism and his focus and attention to the matters at hand. He impressed me as a team player when addressing issues and with his selfless approach to his wide-ranging responsibilities. … From my perspective dealing with Mr. Libby on national security issues, he served the United States Government extremely well.

The administration appears to oppose the political advocacy of uniformed officers, except when they’re advocating on behalf of administration policy.

a lot of criminals may be nice people when you get to know them, but they’re still criminals… this is no excuse for someone to escape justice…

That’s ok, I’m sure the Democratic President will be happy to reinstate it for him in a few short months.

It occurs to me that there was a controversy before the election about uniformed members of the military being present at fundraisers and other campaign events for the Republicans. But it was all in the press and the military never got on it. None of those uniformed military folks even got a whiff of official disapproval, at least not that was visible to the public.

But now a guy protests the war in his uniform and it’s time for a panel. I guess the military is only so serious about not politicizing the uniform.

It is going to take years to rebuild, like it did after Vietnam.

BTW, this dude KNEW what he was doing was illegal due to the discharge paperwork he had signed, and from when he was active duty. What is really dangerous about Chimpy’s politicizing the military is that it makes it much easier for him to use the military for his upcoming coup.

Between now and the election, Chimpy will order another false-flag attack on US cities. Cities didn’t vote for him, so he doesn’t care if they get nuked.

Then Chimpy declares martial law and detains the Democratic party and prominent leftists in his Gulag. It is the only way he can keep his Iraq occupation going on for 30 years with any certainty. And that’s his number one goal, because he’s a Big Oil whore.

The facts are clear Gen. You are a tool.

You obviously think a high level government official that knowingly attempted to subvert the justice system of his country is noteworthy and worthy of leniency.

    I weep for my country

  26. Craig Mack says:

Zooey, depending on your chain of command, there are always 2 rule books. And by the letter of the law (UCMJ) people can’t attend a rally in uniform (regardless of rank), or participate in any on duty political propoganda, right or left. I have even been in units where members had to seek approval for their commanders before attending political function while off duty, and out of uniform.

Cpl. Adam Kokesh – well done you did the right thing to do

I agree. I’m proud of Kokesh for doing the right thing.

  28. Where_Is_MichaelMoores_Apology? says:

Different spanks for different ranks??? Look at this situation more closely. This was not two people doing the same thing. One was using his free speech rights to oppose an ujust war and was NOT ACTIVE-DUTY. The other (General Pace) was defending a man who tried to cover up a CIA agent being outed, and he is ACTIVE DUTY.

Also, one man is saying we need to stop our crimes in Iraq, and the other is defending a convicted criminal and saying he should not face justice. One is calling for less crimes, and the other is defending crime.

The way the military is treating Cpl. Kokesh is completely unAmerican.

It’s typical zooey, I can count on 1 hand (w/2 fingers) the # of generals that have the full support and respect of their troops. The rest staff officers like that are just politicians in training. They will all step out of their uniforms straight into a CEO or advisor position making more in 3 moths than enlisted people make in a year. (uuurrrk…..urge to vomit)

  70. Marie says:

It’s pretty outrageous that Peter Pace would defend someone like Libby who was actually working counter-defense of the nation in his role outing Valerie Plame.
Bush kept firing and retiring generals until he found two like Pace and Petraeus who would continue to salute his treasonous, undemocratic and unconstitutional actions as president. Two yes-men generals like that don’t deserve to stay in the military — they have betrayed the men who serve under them, and they have betrayed the American public.

Very well said. It is almost a sure bet that Kokesh was inspired by the GI Resisters featured in the incredibly moving documentary Sir! No Sir! and the classic book by David Cortright Soldiers In Revolt- GI Resistance During the Vietnam War, as well as by people such as Lt. Watada and members of the IVAW [Iraq Veterans Against the War]. The hope is that these people will contine to inspire others in the military to say NO to the U.S. war machine in Iraq.

I honor this soldier for taking part in a protest of this unjust war, and in no way does this discredit the military. Plus, who is the deciderer about what is considered discredit? If taking part in an anti-Iraq war rally, as a directly informed citizen(soldier), is somehow discrediting the military, isn’t that just a bit lame/self-conscious/insecure of them?

Marie – Get off your high horse – Libby had nothing to do with OUTING super sleuth, Val Plame. Richard Armitage and her hubby did that….

Cpl. Kokesh and others in the military do not enjoy “free speech”. (As my husband and brother noted, serving under the personally disliked Bill Clinton was NO excuse to criticize HIM or the Clinton Administrations’ military policies.) But since Cpl. Kokesh feels so stronglyu about this unjust war, I trust he will be returning his military pay.

  113. crackbaby says:

Remember, duchebags like General Peter Pace and the other trash who confuse democracy with facism (yes, peter, WE are a democracy, not a theocracy or dictatorship) often hide behind their uniforms or the cross or other icons and symbols. Why? Because they are not thinkers, they are followers of whomever can make them feel that they are strong and not the abused or neglected kid they used to be.

As long as these morons in the Pentagon have power, outspoken critics of the administration will have to watch their back.

    Good luck, Adam Kokesh.

    CB

  114. Erroll says:

Contrary to what valiant venus may believe, people do not put their brains on hold when they join the military. She may also want to see the 2006 documentary Sir! No Sir! for confirmation of that statement as well as the closing lines from Bertolt Brecht’s poem General, Your Tank Is a Powerful Vehicle:

    General, man is very useful.
He can fly and he can kill.
    But he has one defect:
    He can think.

(Many who disagreed with former President cClinton did not vocally disagree with him – they just didn’t extend their service. Sir! No Sir! was designed to undermine the US military, Errol – too bad you can’t be honest enough to admit it.

  118. crackbaby says:

Oh, and one more thing. It pays to keep in mind that those who behave in ways such as Gen. Pace and the rest of the yahoos who decided to punish Adam Kokesh will NEVER argue on the merits of an issue. They must do their dirty work in the dark because direct discussion of their ideas and plans and actions would never result in the outcome they desire; normal people with ethics would not stand for such things.

But, alas, we deal in a world filled with losers, liars, fools, deceivers, idiots, and did I mention fools? The trick is to surround one’s self with trustworthy souls.
    CB

  119. Uncle Ho says:

Mighty moron; Sir! No Sir! is not propaganda to undermine the troops, Get your head out of your ass. It historical fact. a) the only position you served is prone, legs wide open. b) When I was in San Francisco during Vietnam, command sent down word that going to antiwar demonstrations ist verboten. I therefore went anyway.

  120. Erroll says:

    Valiant venus

Honest enough to admit what, that the military personnel dared to speak out against the illegal war machine in Vietnam? If you had actually seen the documentary, you would have realized that that was the obvious intention of what those GI Resisters were doing in the film. As the UCMJ and the Army Field Manual clearly state, those in the military have not only a right but a duty and an obligation to speak out against what they consider to be an illegal order and that is exactly what they were doing in the film and exactly what Lt. Watada and members of the IVAW are doing today. Again, despite your contention, those who are in the military are not robots and as Bertolt Brecht pointed out in his poem, they have one defect which the military is deathly afraid of: they can think. Also, that is Erroll with 2 ls.

  121. Gerald Gibson says:

    Translation about Libby:
Party loyalty over honesty=convicted liar falling on his sword=kudos from fellow crooks and liars=pardon and medal of freedom

Iraq war veteran Marine Cpl. Adam Kokesh is not a “team player”=stick his sword up his ass=punish the shit out of him=send him home in shame

  123. Erroll says:

    Uncle Ho

The tragedy of Valiant Venus is contained in her sentence “but [we] knew what was expected of us when we volunteered.” It is as if Tennyson had her in mind when he wrote “Into the valley of death rode the 600.” It apparently would not matter to her how questionable or her stupid or how illegal the mission might be, she would end up going over the precipice with the rest of the lemmings. She gives new meaning to the phrase “cannon fodeder.”

Military Panel Recommends Discharge For Anti-War Marine
    Associated Press   | June 4, 2007 at 11:24 PM

“Marine Cpl. Adam Kokesh participated in the protest in March, clad in a uniform that had his name tag and other insignia removed. After he was identified in a photo caption in The Washington Post, a superior officer sent him a letter saying he might have violated a rule prohibiting troops from wearing uniforms without authorization.

“After a hearing Monday before an administrative separation board at the Marine Corps Mobilization Command, the panel decided not to recommend a less-than-honorable discharge, choosing instead the general discharge.”

You might want to watch where you get your news from, Guest.

  126. Jake says:

If Kokesh was wearing a MARPAT uniform, regardless of his name tag or other insignia, it has the Marine Corps emblem incorporated into it’s design. Civilians cannot buy this uniform, it’s strictly for active duty Marine’s. So, he was “in uniform” and, whether intended to or not, representing the Marine Corps. Nothing would have been said had he protested in civilian clothes. HE chose to bring the uniform into it, to make a point, and now the military will make theirs.

The question is, can you think for yourselves, or like the neo-idiot above, do you think that to do so makes you a liberal and therefore somehow less of an American? The rules of the Bible, and the Constitution you are fighting to preserve state that you should not be in the war you are fighting, but the rules you are asked to obey tell you that if you disagree with the war you risk losing your honorable discharge! I believe you are honorable as you stand and I spit on those who would claim otherwise. God bless America, and damn those who disgrace her, including Libby and Pace!
