June 7th, 2007 at 3:38 pmBAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) — A new approach by American-led forces in Iraq is producing “breathtaking” improvements in security in some areas, says Lt. Gen. David Petraeus, commander of U.S. forces in the country, but al Qaeda in Iraq remains well-entrenched in some Baghdad neighborhoods.
In an exclusive interview with CNN, Petraeus said the situation in Anbar, the restive Sunni province west of the Iraqi capital, has been “truly transformed in recent months, as the Anbaris and the tribes have decided to oppose al Qaeda and fight with the coalition forces against them.”
“What’s taken place in Anbar is almost breathtaking,” he said. “In the last several months, tribes that turned a blind eye to what al Qaeda was doing in that province are now opposing al Qaeda very vigorously. And the level of violence in Anbar has plummeted; although there clearly is still work to be done.
“Our strategy has always been with this new approach to determine who are the reconcilables and to separate them from the irreconcilables, the extremists,” he said. (Watch how some Iraqi insurgents are turning on al Qaeda in Iraq militants)
But the picture is not consistent, Petraeus said, and the increase in U.S. forces had been more effective in some areas than others.
Tough work remains to be done in Diyala province north of Baghdad, and al Qaeda remains able to use neighborhoods around the capital to build and dispatch car bombs, he said.

More violence means we’re winning because the insurgents are getting desparate. We predicted this.
Less violence ALSO means we’re winning. That should be obvious.
Therefore, those who say that we’re losing don’t support the troops.

BAGHDAD — Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers, acting on a tip from a local Iraqi citizen, discovered and destroyed a car bomb and an explosives cache in southern Baghdad June 6.
Soldiers from Company C, 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, attached to the 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment “Vanguards,†discovered the car bomb while on patrol in a rural area after receiving a report from a local resident of suspicious activity in the area.
A search of the area also resulted in the discovery of 14 55-gallon drums containing homemade explosives. After cordoning off the area, both the car bomb and explosives were disposed of by an explosive ordnance disposal team.
“This is one more car bomb and cache of explosives discovered and destroyed that will never be used against innocent Iraqi civilians or Coalition Forces,†said Col. Ricky D. Gibbs, commander of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division.
“I’m extremely proud of these Soldiers who continue to maintain their edge and act on information provided by courageous Iraqis who are taking a stand against insurgent activity here.â€

Iraqi Army Forces detain two insurgent leaders, five other suspected insurgents in northern Iraq Multi-National Corps – Iraq PAO
BAGHDAD – Iraqi Army Forces conducted an early morning operation June 6 capturing two insurgent leaders linked to an al-Qaeda terrorist network in northern Iraq and detained five other suspected insurgents. The two insurgent leaders are accused of conducting multiple assassinations and improvised explosive device attacks on innocent civilians and Coalition Forces.
The two leaders are allegedly responsible for numerous terrorist acts:
1. the Feb. 13, 2005 attack that killed three Iraqi National Guard Soldiers; 2. the May 14, 2004 assassination of the Governor of Ninewa; 3. a June 1, 2007 vehicle borne improvised explosive device in Haychel; and 4. the May 13, 2007 VBIED attack in Makmoor.
Acting on previous intelligence, Iraqi Forces raided the residences and detained their primary targets without incident. Five other individuals were detained during the operation.
This operation will severely disrupt the al-Qaeda network’s ability to conduct assassinations and IED attacks on innocent civilians in Mashat Village, Sharqat District as well as disrupt terrorist activity and influence in the Za’ab triangle north from Baghdad to Mosul or Irbil.
Coalition Forces served as advisors during the operation. No Iraqi or Coalition Forces were injured during the operation.

Islamic Army in Iraq mends fences with al-Qaeda after differences.
http://english.aljazeera.net/English
The Islamic Army in Iraq is one of the strongest and best-organised Sunni armed groups, responsible for dozens of attacks on American forces in Iraq.
Lately it has been at odds with al-Qaeda, a group it has at times fought alongside.
Now – ominously for Washington – both groups appear to have settled their differences.
“The truce entered into force at dawn on Wednesday,” Ibrahim al-Shamary said.
Returning to those days could lead to a sharp increase in American casualties in Iraq.

Islamic Army in Iraq mends fences with al-Qaeda after differences.
http://english.aljazeera.net/English
The Islamic Army’s fighters are mostly Iraqi and their stated aim is to expel any foreign influence – whether US or Iranian – from the country.
Members of both armed groups were lately involved in clashes in west Baghdad, indicating that, on the ground at least, the gap had widened.
But now it seems there is a desire to work together again.
“We hope that the relationship between us and al-Qaeda will return back to the first days of jihad [struggle], when we were very close to these brothers,” says al-Shamary, referring to a time when both groups joined arms in a relentless campaign against US troops.
Returning to those days could lead to a sharp increase in American casualties in Iraq.
June 7th, 2007 at 3:59 pmHow can this be?? I specifically heard Laura (Dont Charge Me With Manslaughter) Bush on the Larry King Live show a month or so ago talking about how “one bomb a day” goes off in Iraq and thats all the conservative-biased media (my phrase not hers) focuses on. Laura was upset that we only hear about the bad news from that pesky “one bomb a day.” Now we learn that “Bombs exploded today” outside a falafel restaurant (too bad Bill O’Lielly wasn’t there at the time). So, does this mean that Laura lied to us about there being only “one bomb a day” or is this another example of the mainstream media’s unwillingness to paint a rosy scenario for the sheeple about what’s happening in Iraqnam?
I remain confused.
June 7th, 2007 at 4:03 pm(Reuters) – An Iraqi militant group said on Wednesday it has reached a ceasefire deal with Iraq’s wing of al Qaeda to end clashes between the two Sunni insurgent groups waging a violent campaign against U.S.-led forces in iraq.
“A deal has been reached between the Islamic Army in Iraq and al Qaeda in Iraq that stipulates an immediate end to all military operation between the two sides in all sectors including capture operation,†the Islamis Army in Iraq said in a statement on a Web site used by militants including al Qaeda.

In any case, it’s clear that the Sunni militia and al-Queda are only truced because we’re there… meaning that our Iraqi presence is protecting al-Queda…
