Congress votes to expand stem cell research.

“Lawmakers defied President George W. Bush on Thursday and gave final congressional approval to legislation to expand federally funded embryonic stem cell research. But the Democratic-led House of Representatives and Senate are not expected to muster the needed two-third majorities votes that would be needed to override a promised veto by the president.”

Yep sounds about right. Praise Jebus!!

If any veto supporting s.o.b. wants to send their home address, I have about 3 billion potential little humans to send you. Please give them a good home.

If the mail’s a little late and the envelope is just powder, go ahead and put in in your coffee with a little sugar. There’s a lot more where that came from.

This is but another example of why it will be so important in 2008 to produce a super majority in the House and the Senate. We need to hit the ground running and work our Cheney’s off to ensure that every Dem running for every office (even Dog Catcher if needed) is elected. Granted with Al in the White House in 2009 alot of the immediate danger will be over (until the next Repugnican slithers in) but still. A super majority is what we need to aim for next year.

    House = 437D to 0 R’
    Senate = 70 D to 30 R
    White House = Al
    This all = nirvana.

According to Jake, it’s OK to kill hundred of thousands of people for oil, but not ok to use an embryo to save hundreds of thousands of lives. Not very logical, then again, I doubt anyone’s ever confused Jake with someone who uses logic. This is just one facet of superstitionist thinking.

Unless that innocent life is that of a young girl that’s been raped – at which point Jake wants her to be *forced* to carry *his* baby to term. Lunatic.

  9. Jeremy says:

    Jake:

RIIIIIIIIGHT. You’re just fine with sending American troops off to die in far away places with no vision of the future and no goal in sight, just continued war without end.

You’re just fine with gutting the mental health system in the United States, leaving no place for a mentally unballanced Korean-American to turn except gunning down 30+ of his classmates.

You’re just fine with running the basic costs of living up to pad the pockets of the Oil companies while a single mother bends over backwards to care for her children, to the point that she can’t afford food or healthcare for herself.

You’re just fine with the National Guard being blown away overseas by fundamentalists that you previously saw fit to empower because they could help you overrun one of your previous enemies instead of being here in the States to help in the recovery of areas after natural disasters, such as, oh, I don’t know, the Hurricane that was predicted for 40 years, or a twister complex that obliterated parts of Kansas.

You’re just fine with pumping scientifically proven greenhouse-effect inducing gasses in ever-increasing amounts so the big companies can keep more of their profits, Earth’s future and the lives of the over five-billion people currently inhabiting it be damned.

You’re just fine with medical care being priced to the point it’s virtually out of _my_ hands, uninsured, hoping that my body will remain as strong and vibrant these next few months as it has been the last 33 years, at least until my insurance kicks in for the fall, and hoping that the rather disgusting problems with regularity and consistancy of when I use the bathroom are due to things external to me and not because of a problem with my body that will require medical attention.

You’re just fine with pet-food laced with melamine, toothpaste laced with Diethylene glycol, and evidence that that pet-food found its way into pigs. After all, it’s not like the big companies have too much money, after all…

And of course, you’re all about the Death Penalty, too.

But, oh my…a 16 cell mass smaller than the period at the end of this sentence. You gotta protect that! Your party is pro-life, Jake, until the moment that life is born. Then that life is on its own. Spare me your bullshit, dude. At least be consistent. If you’re pro-life, be anti-war, pro-environment, pro-health care, anti-Chinese Trade, and anti-death penalty. But of course, your masters would turn on you. They want their $upporter$ to continue to $end the dollar$ and tho$e $upporter$ would not appreciate us small insignificant people who dare to have dreams of health and happiness getting in the way of their per$uit of unbridled avarice, so they use you useful idiots to appeal to base emotions while the $$$ continue to be racked in hand over fist.

  10. Crump's Brother says:

    Yes,

And now a religious whacko in the White House will veto the legislation based solely on religious belief and nothing else.

Ah religion, opiate for the masses. Behave or else. Don’t question or else.

Jake did you know that a blastocyst has about only 150 cells. In comparison the brain of a fly has over 100,000.

With the things we know about genetics now, the cells you scratch off of your nose, all have the ‘potential’ to become humans. So everytime you scratch your nose, your committing a genocidal event by your logic.

Scientists Use Skin To Create Stem Cells
    Discovery Could Recast Debate
    By Rick Weiss
    Washington Post Staff Writer
    Thursday, June 7, 2007; Page A01

Three teams of scientists said yesterday they had coaxed ordinary mouse skin cells to become what are effectively embryonic stem cells without creating or destroying embryos in the process — an advance that, if it works with human cells, could revolutionize stem cell research and quench one of the hottest bioethical controversies of the decade.

In work being published today, the scientists describe a method for turning back the biological clocks of skin cells growing in laboratory dishes. Thus rejuvenated, the cells give rise to daughter cells that are able to become all the parts needed to make a new mouse.

If the process also works with human cells, as scientists suspect it will with some modifications, it would mean that a person’s own skin cells could be converted directly into stem cells without having to collect healthy human eggs or destroy human embryos — steps that until now have been required to obtain embryonic stem cells.

‘course, they’d still have to find a way to discard all those
    IVF embryos without destroying them…

seems like much ado about turning something into something else
that already exists (embryonic stem cells)…

  13. hellinabucket says:

And jeremy unloads with both barrells!!! Direct hit. That post is a cut and paster for most troll rebutals.

    Awesome post.

  14. Jeremy says:

    Katy:

    1) This is being done with mice, not humans. While mice are close to humans genetically, there are still enough fundamental differences between us and mice that there is uncertainty that this will work. Hence the last paragraph.

    2) One major problem with this approach deals with something we understand but cannot reverse yet. Short answer? DNA has a finite number of replications before it starts losing actual important information instead of the useless ends of the DNA strand (look up ‘telomere’ if you want more info on that). Eventually, DNA gets too short, starts losing Genes, and cells die. So, if you want viable long-lasting tissue, it’s best to grab the DNA as early as possible. The easiest way to do that is to go to the source, if you will. Hence why Embryonic Stem Cells are so attractive at the moment.

Eventually we may unlock a way to create and use stem cells, but only if our politicians get off their duff and trust the scientists better experience and judgement.

If Jake and his ilk could tell that the embryos were all brown people they’d get right behind stem cell research.

Didn’t you guys know that the main people who are against the stem cell project are secretly conducting their own stem cell research. These people want to live for ever or least want to survive the rapture. World domination are there goal, any means necessary.

Thanks for the great post Jeremy, it really sums up the hypocrasy of the right on these issues. I’m saving it, and I’ll warn you now, I might use it.

    good rant, jeremy…

i posted that story to give a heads up warning about the troolls who will say that embryonic stem cells are not needed in light of this latest “breakthrough”…

    as the article says:
… if it works with human cells, could revolutionize stem cell research and quench one of the hottest bioethical controversies of the decade.

    a big IF…

  21. Paris says:

Well said Jeremy!! I couldn’t have said it any better!!

They don’t care who dies so long as it’s not a blob of cells. Once that blob of cells is born, they could care less if it dies. In fact, they do everything in their power to ensure that it will die.

  22. m12 says:

No, its not ok to use an embryo to save hundreds of thousands of lives with taxpayer money.

You’re free to do it on your own.

again- jake the troll. Screw him. Don’t waste time on him or her or whatever it is.

Lets vote them in again in 08! They deserve our support!(my ass)

  24. Peter says:

Democrats don’t need to pass good bills with a veto-proof majority; they just need to pass good bills. Most of the country knows who Bush really is; that’s why his approval rating is so low. The more Bush uses his veto for good bills, the greater the consequences for the Republican party. As his popularity decreases, the chances for good things, like impeachment, improve.

Democrats shouldn’t waste time passing complicated compromises. They should concentrate on passing good legislation. If Bush vetos it, and if the Republicans vote to sustain the veto, that is important information.

Let me know if you think eradicating small pox with tax dollars is bad thing, because I think they still have a few vials at USAMRIID that I would love for you to sniff (in a hermeiotically sealed room of course) if that’s the case.

    Dumbass.

Is this what you wanted out of the previous “do nothing” congress ? To pretend harder that they were doing something ?
