Conservatives Refuse To Ban Human Cloning»

Conservatives claim they are against human cloning. But yesterday, House conservatives blocked passage of a bill to ban reproductive cloning. The Human Cloning Prohibition Act of 2007 would have made it illegal to clone a human being. The AP reports:

House Republicans united Wednesday to reject a Democratic-backed bill to ban human reproductive cloning, a prelude to the larger battle this week over the federal funding of stem cell research. […]

Only 14 of 196 voting Republicans supported it. Among Democrats, 190 of the 221 voting were for it.

The bill, hastily added to the House agenda Wednesday, makes it illegal to use cloning technology to initiate a pregnancy and create a cloned human being. Violators would be subject to up to 10 years in prison and face fines of up to $10 million.

Human cloning is overwhelmingly opposed by the American people. A Gallup poll last week found that 86 percent of the public opposes it. Human cloning is also banned in several other countries, including Britain and Australia.

Conservatives torpedoed the bill because it does not ban the use of somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) to create embryonic stem cells, which is often called therapeutic cloning. They argue that SCNT, which is legal, constitutes human cloning, because they consider the embryo-like entity it produces to be a human being.

Strong support for embryonic stem cell research continues to show, however, that the majority of Americans do not consider embryos to be human beings. SCNT would allow scientists to create patient-specific stem cells, which would greatly aid disease study and drug development, and also vastly reduce the risk of transplant rejection for clinic use of embryonic stem cells. Conservatives have been actively opposing SCNT at the state level, including Kansas, Missouri, and Iowa.

The public support for this research has been strong when the distinction is properly made between reproductive cloning and SCNT. A Republican pollster found that 69 percent of Kansas voters and 66 percent of Missouri voters support SCNT, and a 2005 poll found that 69 percent of Americans support SCNT.

Right-wing opposition to this popular and useful research has prevented Congress from banning human cloning.

I am very uncomfortable with cloning, and I think it should be illegal. Just because science is advancing toward a thing, doesn’t mean we have to do there. If we can’t agree on something like stem cell research, then how the hell would we ever agree on cloning.

upright left, using medical waste to save your baby? Yeah, I think that is quite all right. Gee, something that is actually human life versus something that is 12 cells. Der.

  140. JPark Says:

upright left, I guarantee you they aren’t yours. If you aren’t willing to sacrifice blastocysts you don’t deserve to have kids.

    Der.

    Heh heh. ;)

  142. JPark Says:

upright left, you can laugh if you want. You are still wrong and apparantly you know it since you don’t have a response.

If someone causes harm to the blastocyst that is becoming the child that you desperately want, have they commited a crime?

  144. JPark Says:

Why do you say a child you desperately want? Why does that make a blastocyst any more important? A blastocyst is a group of 10-20 cells that is not viable, it is not a human, it has no “soul”. It has no brain, no heart, no lungs. The only possible reason you could consider it full human life is that you are a crispy. Are you?

    Comment by JPark — June 8, 2007 @ 2:27 am

Because if you don’t desperately want it, you’d say it’s ok to kill it almost until delivery. It’s the only way to get you to think about the subject from a point of view other than “We have the right to kill any baby before it is born.” I notice you chose not to answer the question. By your reasoning, that must mean that you know you are wrong. And your avoidance of the question was deliberate, unlike mine, since you did respond.

  146. JPark Says:

upright left, you say what if you desperately want a child. If your wife/girlfriend got “pregnant” and lost it at the blastocyst stage (extremely common) you wouldn’t even know it.

  147. JPark Says:

Sorry, you are a righty, I shouldn’t have said girlfriend, I should have said future ex-wife.

You know with in vitro. If someone caused harm to it, have they committed a crime?

If you plan in advance to have an ex-wife, you’ll most likely have one, buddy.

  150. JPark Says:

You make now sense, upright. If someone caused the miscarriage that you never knew about?

  151. JPark Says:

Oh, I get it upright. Oops, somebody bumped into her. Yeah, I would guess you would want the death penalty.

C’mon my liberal friend, are you avoiding the question cause ya know you are wrong?

upright, why would I think they committed a crime?

  154. JPark Says:

My apologies, I thought it would be obvious that I wouldn’t think invitro fertilization wouldn’t be a felony. I don’t know why you would ask that question though.

I can’t imagine why, J. ;) It’s only the beginning of a child that you previously seemed to care so much about. Just checking to make sure you are consistent. Somehow though, I think your reaction would be a little different if you actually found yourself in that situation. I expect that you would be upset that the person causing the harm had damaged your property rather than killing your child. Oh but there’s no need to get upset about someone damaging your property, right? In fact, I’m sure you would try to understand what awful thing in his life caused him to want to damage your property, right? ;)

These odd responses from liberals are really beginning to make me think you are deliberately being difficult. Forgive me if I’m mistaken, though. ;)

  157. JPark Says:

No, upright, a blastocyst is not a child. It would not be noticed by the “parents to be”.

You are right that if I knew my gf/wife was pregnant and someone killed it I would be pissed. You don’t get it though. We are talking about medical waste. We are talking about tiny little clumps of cells that will NEVER be human beings. You somehow seem to think you have busted me on some sort of hypocrisy. You haven’t. There are THOUSANDS of non-viable blastocysts that instead of being thrown away could be used to save lives.

  158. JPark Says:

upright, no. My responses are not fake nor are they difficult. I don’t know if it should be an added charge if a pregnant woman is killed. I think it probably should but you guys would use it as an excuse to call any pregnancy (no matter how unviable) a double murder.

  159. upright left Says:

    You don’t get it though.
    Comment by JPark — June 8, 2007 @ 3:22 am

You don’t get it, Park, or you choose not to answer. If you and your “significant other” need in vitro, get to the blastocyst stage, and some evil person destroys it, has he committed a crime? You were once a blastocyst, ya know, and look at you now! Good thing your folks didn’t consider you medical waste, eh buddy? ;)

  160. JPark Says:

#164 Sure, it is a crime, upright. It is destruction of property…which is exactly the crime he would be charged under the law.

  161. JPark Says:

You know what, upright? I was an IUD baby. I was a mistake. They could have aborted me and you know what? I wouldn’t know the difference. I wasn’t wanted. However, my parents came around. If I had different parents, say abusive or neglectful parents I might as well have been aborted. I would likely be a criminal. And my mom, after my dad died went to college to make a good life for us, in turn instilling a work ethic in my brother and I. But YOU would have been against that WASTE of tax money. F^ck off upright.

Which is exactly what I said earlier. Just wanted to know where ya stood. How many little properties do you have, Park? ;)

  163. JPark Says:

I guess I missed the important point. My mom went to college with the survivor’s benefits that were left after Reagan stole most of it.
