In a 50 to 45 vote, the Senate today “voted against cutting off debate on an immigration compromise bill and advancing the bill. Sixty votes were needed for approval of the motion.” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said. “I, even though disappointed, look forward to passing this bill. I have every desire to complete this legislation, and we all have to work — the president included — to figure out a way to get this bill passed.”
Good news on that one!

June 7th, 2007 at 11:59 pmya know what folks. This is the best news I have heard all day. Maybe even all week! To hell with it. Don’t give the chimp a single”victory!” Stall, vote, delay! the bastard doesn’t deserve a single success. Just ask the families of the 3500+ that are dead. Just ask the 600,000 that are dead. Just ask the folks that won’t ever get to go home again after Katrina. Just ask the close to a million lost in Darfur.
June 8th, 2007 at 12:03 amSo, bravo to all those that denied the war criminal a victory and I pray that there will many more in the coming months!
How about closing the border.
Then force the illegal aliens out of the country.
Anything else get the GOP criminal elected to office again and in control of the government.
The Democratic Party are fools for wanting this bill.
They are the stupidest damn fools.
June 8th, 2007 at 12:03 amEasyRider:
Even if it would cost more to close the border and force every illegal alien out of the country? Also, which “GOP criminal” are you referring to being elected to office again?

June 8th, 2007 at 12:11 amOh, and Darfur is now Bush’s fault? I guess I’ve seen it all….
June 8th, 2007 at 12:13 amMost democrats didn’t want this bill. Shows how far out of touch the repug’s are. This sums it up.
A Rasmussen Reports poll conducted Monday and Tuesday night found that just 23% of voters now support the bill while 50% are opposed.
Public opposition to the bill has already had an impact on Election 2008. Senator John McCain, a leading supporter of the bill, fell to fourth place in the latest Rasmussen Reports poll for the Republican Presidential nomination. Voters in McCain’s home state of Arizona are no more enthusiastic about the bill than voters nationwide. Just 47% of Arizona voters now have a favorable opinion of McCain.
President George W. Bush, a primary backer of the immigration legislation, saw his Job Approval ratings tumble to record lows in May as the debate heated up.
From the beginning, the President and most other Beltway politicians have misunderstood the public debate over immigration. The initial discussions in Washington implied a debate that was either pro-immigration or anti-immigration. Those who favored some form of legalization or earned citizenship were pictured in official Washington as pro-immigrant while those who favored border control were thought to be anti-immigrant, ignorant, and perhaps racist. While favoring an immigrant-friendly society, most Americans also favor a society in which the laws are observed by everyone. By a 3-to-1 margin, voters say it doesn’t make sense to consider additional laws until the government first gains control of the borders and enforces existing laws.

“WAAAHHH!!! MOMMY, MOMMY, THAT’S NOT FAIR!!! BUT, BUT, BUT MOMMY!!! CLINTON DID IT TOO MOMMY!!! IT’S NOT FAIR!!! WAAAHHH!!!”
Which oddly enough, really is the case this time!
The deep dark secret is, that BOTH parties want to provide cheap labor for their corporate donors. They just use different rhetoric in order to justify it.
It’s hysterical watching them stumble all over themselves trying to get their talking points in line.
Don’t worry, it will eventually pass, after much hand wringing of course. Big money interests generally always get their way.
June 8th, 2007 at 12:17 amHow about closing the border.

Before the Reagan administration, we did not have this problem as businesses and corporations were held to account – pay heavy fines if caught hiring the undocumented. That stopped with Reagan and since a blind eye is turned while business reap the profits. Now, this is used as a wedge issue to keep the hype up and distraction going while our treasury is being robbed for this lie of a war. Bush really does not want immigration halted as it will be bad for business.

June 8th, 2007 at 12:24 amThe real issue with this amnesty program is that for the past twenty years the middle class has been hammered by cheap labor. Look at construction. All aspects of construction are now permiated by illegals.

Uh, you do realize its the Democrats who are trying to work with the President and it’s the GOP who is stalling and delaying?
There are great numbers of democrats against this bill, despite what their Democratic senators and representatives are doing to get this bill passed.
This bill is terrible for American workers. And if you really believe we’re in danger from extremists sneaking into the country to commit acts of terror (I myself don’t, because if we were it would have already happened many times over), this bill is like putting a neon sign at our borders that blinks COME ON OVER!
This bill is about over-development; more building, more overcrowding, more consumption of resources, more smog, more energy use, more water use. It’s about the rich getting richer, and the workers of America getting squeezed out.
June 8th, 2007 at 12:59 amI take it that didn’t help then. Have a nice life, Mycelium.

June 8th, 2007 at 1:39 amJake, you idiot, WalMart has more employees on federal aid for insurance than any other company. You love that huh? Moron.
June 8th, 2007 at 1:44 amIn trying to be brief…
Nearly everyone will tell you that education is the answer to labor problems. That’s dung these days. Example- The once proud title of engineer today means you work for a little more than a McDonalds manager makes. Not long ago it was said that there was a shortage of engineers in this country. Lots of folks from India and other places flocked here with work visas in hand…willing to work for around 40K a year. There went the prosperity enjoyed in that field in the 90’s.
Also- Not everyone has the mental tools to handle academia at the college level. Think about MOST of the people you went to high school with. What was once great about America is that a person could get a job as a machinist or similar (factory job) and still make a livable wage if college wasn’t for them. Those jobs are almost all gone and what choices are people left with…Can I take your order?
And please don’t tell me that the illegal immigrants do the jobs Americans don’t want. I know a lot of young folks that would love to be carpenters, bricklayers, and such…but they don’t speak the language and need a little more than $7 bucks an hour to get by on…those used to be good jobs too. Sidebar- My neighbors son came back from New Orleans not long ago pretty disappointed. Since there is little work in the Detroit area he figured he’d go down there and pick up a trade. The contractors wouldn’t even consider hiring him- see, if an illegal gets injured (construction is dangerous) nobody cares, if he were to get hurt it causes problems. Sad?
This is good for America?
June 8th, 2007 at 1:45 amExcellent post Mycelium!!
June 8th, 2007 at 1:48 amCurrently the world’s largest retailer, it is the largest private employer in the United States AND Mexico. Wal * Mart is also the largest grocery retailer in the United States, with an estimated 20% of the retail grocery and consumables business, and the largest toy seller in the U.S., with an estimated 45% of the retail toy business, having surpassed Toys “R” Us in the late 1990s. Revenue: $351.1 billion — Net income: $11.3 billion — Total Employees 1.8 million. Tell me again how Wal * Mart is BAD for America?
June 8th, 2007 at 1:48 amJake the Fake…get a life pal but please keep spewing your Rush/Sean $hit on TP…it’s kind of entertaining.
Mega ditto’s pal- You’re a great American. Thanks for showing us “liberals” a thing or two.
June 8th, 2007 at 1:50 amOh, Jake, you MISSED my last post, rain-man. Wal-Mart has the highest percentage of government assisted health care. Why don’t you just come out and admit you would like a one payer system.
June 8th, 2007 at 1:53 amYou’d never be able to guess, though, since some people here manage to bash the President and praise or ignore 3/4 of the Democratic caucus for holding the exact same position.
It’s only a problem when there’s a bill on the floor.
June 8th, 2007 at 1:55 amFor the record, it is not Wal * Mart’s fault that the U.S. government is becoming more and more Socialist every day — I would much rather there be ZERO federal aid for grown adults. On to illegal aliens doing the jobs American won’t: even if this bill passed, and we were able to build the wall, at least there would be a more gradual transition — wages and prices would not increase too dramatically. Let’s say we could instead magically deport every illegal alien tomorrow. The unemployment rate is currently 4.5% so WHO will do all those jobs?!
June 8th, 2007 at 1:56 amFor the record, the Wal * Mart statistics came from neither Rush nor Sean — they were all at Wikipedia.org.

June 8th, 2007 at 1:59 amWho said that Jess? TP posters were livid with the Dem leadership for caving. There were two awful bills just before that too. The DLC MUST go down.
June 8th, 2007 at 2:00 amFinally, something I agree with: The DLC MUST go down.
June 8th, 2007 at 2:02 amJake, in addition to U.S. taxpayers picking up the cost of health care for the underpaid Wal-mart employees, Wal-mart kills local economies.
Wal-mart drives out small businesses in whatever community it’s in, and takes the profits it makes from that community and spends it elsewhere.
Wal-mart is like cancer.
June 8th, 2007 at 2:03 amJess, they don’t care about that. They care about what it costs them. And it is plenty, their taxes go to the subsidized healthcare of Wal-Mart employees. If righties could think for themselves they would hate Wal-Mart just as much as the left.
June 8th, 2007 at 2:05 amJake…what makes you think all of these illegal aliens are working “regular” jobs? Most of the ones in my old neighborhood are selling dope.
June 8th, 2007 at 2:06 amWal * Mart is more efficient, that’s all. If small businesses can’t compete, so be it. There’s got to be SOME benefit to local economies if cities are willing to front millions of dollars to attract new Wal * Mart stores.
June 8th, 2007 at 2:07 amAnyone else NOT on the “Ignore List”?
June 8th, 2007 at 2:08 amThe unemployment rate is currently 4.5%
That’s a false number, Jake.
It doesn’t include those whose unemployment has run out. It doesn’t include those who, having lost their jobs, wind up taking jobs that pay less than what they had been getting, or a couple of jobs to make one barely sufficient salary.
It also doesn’t include those who never had a job and have newly entered the job market and haven’t gotten one. 250,000 jobs have to be created each month to keep up with the new job-seekers in America. In these last six and a half years of Bush, that number has been met only 2 or 3 months. The Bush-Republican economy has been a dismal failure for most Americans.
June 8th, 2007 at 2:10 amWal-Mart, efficient??? They are costing taxpayers at LEAST hundreds of thousands a year. Or am I on your “ignore list”?
June 8th, 2007 at 2:10 amJake, you are talking to yourself and Mr. President. Your list is kind of pathetic, or haven’t you realized that by now?
June 8th, 2007 at 2:12 amWhat are you like 12 Jake? Putting folks that figured out you’re a phoney on your “ignore list” is a bit childish.
June 8th, 2007 at 2:12 amThe DLC MUST go down.
You’ll get no argument with me on that. But it’s going to have to come at local levels. We can’t just post to blogs. We have to get active inside the party at home and take back control of it.
June 8th, 2007 at 2:14 amJess:
Yeah, yeah, it doesn’t include retired people like me either. The unemplyment is at least comparable to Clinton, Reagan, and Carter’s time in office since it didn’t include all that before either.
June 8th, 2007 at 2:14 amHey Jake, if unemployment is 4.5% why are you so scared of immigrants “driving down” wages?

June 8th, 2007 at 2:18 amPhony?! I’ve posted this several times now (I must have just missed your question before, but after this one time exception, you are going back on the “Ignore List” permanently — plenty of other people here “Ignore” me): I was in the U.S. Army 60th Signal Service Company deployed during the Korean War from Fort Lewis to Pusan, Seoul, and then Pyongyang — eventually ended up stationed in Kyoto — after the war, I was transferred back to Fort Carson until my discharge. That’s NOT phony!
June 8th, 2007 at 2:19 amJess:
I’m out of here. Have a good night.
June 8th, 2007 at 2:20 amJake, you toad, the unemployement rate doesn’t include those who have dropped off the roles. It also doesn’t include those who have dropped from a full time, well-paying job to a part-time, sh!t-paying job. But you go right ahead and keep believing everybody is doing just f^cking dandy. Idiot. Real wages are LOWER for the middle class than 5 years ago. That is NOT good for the people.
June 8th, 2007 at 2:23 amWal * Mart is more efficient, that’s all. If small businesses can’t compete, so be it. There’s got to be SOME benefit to local economies if cities are willing to front millions of dollars to attract new Wal * Mart stores.
More efficient? At what?
Cities aren’t paying Wal-mart to come in. Wal-mart is bribing their way in, and some really stupid town councils are getting bought cheap. Just like Indian casinos, Wal-mart comes into a town and it’s the town’s taxpayers who are stuck for the extra costs to the infrastructure.
Check “Storewars” out and learn about a town (Ashland, Virginia) that got steamrolled by Wal-mart.
June 8th, 2007 at 2:25 amI’m thinking I ALMOST want a re-puke win in 08. When this phoney “great economy” crashes-and it will because it’s certainly not sustainable- I’d rather not have a dem sitting in office for they will get the blame. BushCo has pi$$ed off the globe- not a good idea in a global economy. (Not my quote but it’s a good one and quite true.)
June 8th, 2007 at 2:27 amMyc, there isn’t even a good fake economy. Look at every indicator and it is below average. The only thing that is good is income. Unfortunately wages includes the wealth of the very rich. It includes Cheney’s f^cking supposed deferred compensation from Halliburton.
June 8th, 2007 at 2:32 amThe unemplyment is at least comparable to Clinton, Reagan, and Carter’s time in office since it didn’t include all that before either.
Nice try, but no.
The origin of our current woes can be traced to Reaganomics, and Republican deregulation and raiding pensions. Penny stocks. Middle-aged employees were sacked at the height of their earning ability, replaced by young, just out of college, bottom of the pay scale workers. I could do two weeks on Reagan and his crappy policies.
By the time Clinton came around, there was so much money floating around in the IT industry, talk about trickle down, at least you could get $12 an hour to start at Starbucks. All those service industry jobs had to start out paying well because everybody else was doing start ups.
June 8th, 2007 at 2:39 amConservatives, defend the policies of Reagan, Bush I and Bush II. Aww, come on, just try.
June 8th, 2007 at 2:43 amWhen this phoney “great economy†crashes-and it will because it’s certainly not sustainable
When Bush’s tax cuts fully kick in, about 2 years from now, we’re all going to wish we had second homes in Aruba. It’s going to be rough, and I don’t know why any Dem would want the job. But I’ve got to believe that whoever does, has got to have humanitarian intentions.
June 8th, 2007 at 2:44 amI think people “think” the enonomy is doing OK because the stock market looks healthy. Wait until the hedge fund mogules call in their chips- these are the guys that win when everyone else loses in the market I believe. They’re smart foxes- letting the hens get good and fat before the slaughter.
Gotta hit the hay…
June 8th, 2007 at 2:46 amJess, be fair, Mike Vick will be able to move to his home in Aruba and avoid extradition for his dog fighting fetish.
June 8th, 2007 at 2:49 amMyc, the stock market was booming in 1928. Actually all economic indicators were good in 1928 (if you didn’t look real deep, kinda like today).
June 8th, 2007 at 2:50 amJess, be fair, Mike Vick will be able to move to his home in Aruba and avoid extradition for his dog fighting fetish.
heh.
June 8th, 2007 at 2:52 amJPark, the squeeze is on to drain the most money from citizens as is possible. It keeps us immobilized. Or it galvanizes us to move against those oppressing us.
Between that bankruptcy bill a couple of years ago and the drop in home prices, Americans (who were never big on saving) are seeing our liquidity dry up. Most of us have been getting by in these Bush years through re-fis on our homes. The Fed doesn’t look to be interested in loosening up interest rates. How much decay and mayhem can the fat cats stand in their own back yards before they get a clue that they may be making a fortune, but enjoying it is another story?
June 8th, 2007 at 3:00 amJess, unfortunately most schmucks think that is just the way it goes. Repos are at an all time high but nobody but the left are going to notice. And you know the average idiot doesn’t listen to the left…
June 8th, 2007 at 3:04 amIt’s fun to see Republicans forced to act bipartisan–like eating humble pie all day long.
June 8th, 2007 at 6:34 amThis so-called immigration bill is pure sludge. It does not secure the Mexican border, so it is worthless. Harry Reid is a traitor to the Democrat party and he has sold his soul to the Bush Regime.
June 8th, 2007 at 7:14 amMany progressives don’t see that ther is an issue as far as supporitng American citizen workers versus supporting non-citizen workers, Those who have expressed a strong commirment to supporting American workers: Webb (D-VA), Tester (D-MT), Dorgan (D-ND) have my support.
We should primarily be concerned with improving the lot of American cirizens, non-citizens should not be the priority.
June 8th, 2007 at 7:48 amWho left the borders wide open since 9-11?
Chimpy did.
This whole immigration problem is the Repukes’ fault.
June 8th, 2007 at 7:49 amPresident Bushy failed again, his legacy will amount to a divider, killer of our young boys, giving tax cuts to the most wealthy, and destroying our health and well being. Did I mention destroying hope for the future of our children by ignoring global warming?! sheesh
June 8th, 2007 at 7:53 amWalMart is a crooked corporate-welfare whore.
Cheap labor is NOT good for America.
It is part of the ‘Race to the Bottom’ that is killing our great nation
June 8th, 2007 at 7:53 amIllegals here have taken over all the construction jobs and forced Americans out of the job market by underbidding them.
Between illegals and offshoring, American workers have gotten screwed.
I blame the Repukes.
June 8th, 2007 at 8:00 amTom3 > GOPers are more at fault for allowing a flood of cheap labor into the US, but Democrat leaders like Harry Reid are responsible too.
June 8th, 2007 at 8:13 amI campaigned for Kerry/Edwards but will vote Republican in the 08 election. For the life of me, I can’t understand how people could think it appropriate to reward illegal behavior. To allow fellons and those who have committed identity fraud to receive Z visas and be able to stay in the country forever – is crazy, insane, unAmerican. Whatever happened to the rule of law? By the way, I received a letter recently that said someone had been trying to use my SS # to gain credit. I now have a fraud alert on my clean credit score. That is to protect me, but it #$&**@# me off to have to deal with it. Hammer employers for hiring illegals and the problem will resolve itself. It’s simple supply and demand economics.

June 8th, 2007 at 8:38 amCurrently the world’s largest retailer, it is the largest private employer in the United States AND Mexico. Wal * Mart is also the largest grocery retailer in the United States, with an estimated 20% of the retail grocery and consumables business, and the largest toy seller in the U.S., with an estimated 45% of the retail toy business, having surpassed Toys “R†Us in the late 1990s. Revenue: $351.1 billion — Net income: $11.3 billion — Total Employees 1.8 million. Tell me again how Wal * Mart is BAD for America?
Comment by Jake
There was a time when monopolies were considered a bad thing. The government passed ant-trust laws in order to deter monopolies. Those laws still exist, but unfortunately, nobody enforces them any longer.
So tell me Jake, why were those laws passed in the first place?
June 8th, 2007 at 8:47 amI campaigned for Kerry/Edwards but will vote Republican in the 08 election.
Comment by John
You do realize that Bush, a “Republican” BTW, is THE main proponent of this bill?
LOL!
June 8th, 2007 at 8:49 amTell me again how Wal * Mart is BAD for America?

Geez, jake, they only bankrupt small-town economy after small-town economy wherever they go.
June 8th, 2007 at 8:58 amWoohoo! There is no reason to re-invent the wheel. Secure the border, enforce existing laws and come down hard on those that would employ illegals. Sure we need a guest worker program, but we damn sure don’t need to reward lawbreakers with a path to citizenship for the third time in 40 years, when there are countless people trying to do it the right way and waiting for years and years. Fix that system also, just don’t reward lawbreakers.
June 8th, 2007 at 9:07 am“I thought the Democrats had a MANDATE in Congress?”
There are a lot of Democrats who think this is a bad bill. Not because of the provisions allowing immigrants to become legal, but because it is basically a corporate give-away. The so-called “guest worker” bill is little more than a system of legal slavery. And the bill also makes getting a H1 visa (you know, where Microsoft can bring someone over from India to take an American’s job for $12 an hour) much easier. There are already way too many H1 visas granted today. Microsoft, Sun, HP and others say that they can’t find an Engineer or Programmer to take the job so they are granted an H1 Visa. Well, I wish you would tell all the unemployed engineers and programmers out there that they are not really available to take the job. I think they would disagree. The problem is that they are not willing to work as an engineer or programmer for $12 an hour when industry standards for these jobs is more like $24-34 an hour.
The only reason why Bush is pushing this particular bill is because it benefits his fat-cat corporate friends greatly. It does nothing to benefit the workers in the US and does a lot to make their plight much worse.
June 8th, 2007 at 9:30 amSorry about the quad post. I would post and nothing seemed to happen then I edited and still nothing seemed to happen. Then they all appeared at one time.
Please TP delete the last three and once again I apologize.
June 8th, 2007 at 9:52 amAhh, only us Liberals would want to bring down Wal-Mart, which employs countless Americans.
yes, let’s bring down Wal-Mart and put in the unemployment line countless Americans!!!!
down with Wal-Mart!!! down with Wal-Mart!!!!
a ma’ and pa’ store that was successful!
we can’t have success in America! Success is for the idiots, for the fools. If you are successful in America, you should be taxed double whatever else is tax, you should be paying all of America’s medical bills.
We Democrats love, adore punishing success.

Do tell, what did I do to protect the border? In fact, what has my party done to protect the border?
we need illegal immigrants to come to the USA, we need them so badly!!
You see, us Liberals are not populating at a rate to fill up our ranks, conservatives. It is well known that Conservatives have at least 20% more kids than we do, about 80% of kids keep their parents politics. This means that us Liberals will be an extinct species if we don’t do something.
So we need illegals to come in here, get hooked on our social programs and they will keep on voting us into office because they need our social programs to survive. We need to keep illegal immigrants dependent on the government, dependent on the Democratic Party, this is how you win elections!!!!
who is with me?!!! join me my sycophant followers, join me and let us keep the borders open!

Bend over some more for them!
Tell me, why did 37 Democrats think this is a good bill?
June 8th, 2007 at 11:10 amNow I don’t see any of the copies of my original post or even the original post. I will then try one last time with this edited version? If we wind up at some point with 5 similar posts forgive me.
I cannot believe anyone here would support this bill! If TP is full of activists from abroad then I understand votes in support. As it happens George Bush wants this bill and many of you want it too. That is so odd in so many ways.
To me this hypocrisy is analogous to the Paris Hilton one. Since Paris broke the law several times over and loves to drink and drive she is able to defy the law and on top of that does not complete a greatly reduced sentence in jail. The hypocrisy enters here at TP like this…
“Paris is a criminal.†Vs. “Aliens do the jobs Americans don’t want to do!â€
“Paris should stay in jail.†Vs. “There just poor and didn’t do anything wrong.â€
“If I were arrested for DUI they would throw the book at me.†Vs. “They are not illegal aliens, they are just undocumented workers!â€
Complete and total hypocrisy is what we are watching. Then after six long years of Bush many just want to give him what he wants? He wants NAFTA, he wants the North American Union, he wants Security and Prosperity Partnership Of North America, he wants a super highway (while we are running out of energy) so Mexican trucks can drive directly into America and worst of all he wants us to do the unspeakable and switch currency to Amero Dollars.
Most of you know that Congress has repeatedly sold out the American people that they are supposed to represent by doing things like:
Patriot Act I
War Powers
Patriot Act II
Multiple war funding bills passing $600,000,000,000,000.00
No impeachments
No time tables
“Now we can see the New World Order coming into view (quote from Bush 41)â€, when Bush allows amnesty for law breakers. Bush does not do things that make our lives as citizens better if you didn’t notice. I happen to think that Bush is brilliant since he has been the only President who has been able to take the nation down a path that only he knows and simply can’t be stopped. Congress appears to want Bush to take us on this journey to N W O.
We are almost forced to accept this since there is staggering debt now since the nation has been deliberately bankrupted. Our national “Pirates†are swashbuckeling their way across the Mideast and nothing can stop it. You would think that after all of this someone would start throwing the word “antichrist†around and our thoughts would immediately turn to Bush?
June 8th, 2007 at 11:25 amWhat Senator Kyl realized last year, a lot more people are going to realize next year. He had a closer election last time around than anyone could have imagined. People who take rhetorically anti-immigrant, do-nothing stances will lose in 2008.
It is time that the pro-immigration reform community stands up for its candidates. Visit:
