Introducing Sen. Lynne Cheney»

lcheneywh.jpgLynne Cheney, the wife of Vice President Cheney, is “being floated in Senate GOP leadership circles as a possible replacement for the late Sen. Craig Thomas (R-WY), who died Monday night.”

Wyoming law ensures that the Thomas’ “seat will remain in Republican control, and the balance of power in the Senate will remain unchanged.” Should Cheney be nominated, however, her record indicates that Wyoming’s Senate representation would shift to the far-right of the political spectrum:

– In December 2006, Cheney argued that putting Scooter Libby on trial “does not reflect well on our judicial system.” [Link]

– In October 2006, Cheney called the media’s portrayal of the NSA’s domestic spying program a “terrible distortion of both the president and the vice president’s position on many issues,” in part because CNN used the phrase “domestic surveillance” to describe the so-called “Terrorist Surveillance Program.” [Link]

– In October 2004, when Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) referred to Cheney’s lesbian daughter, Mary, as an “an example of a healthy gay person loved by her family.” Cheney said of Kerry, “This is a bad man.” [Link]

– In December 2005, Cheney falsely suggested that her husband Vice President Cheney had not attempted to link Saddam Hussein and 9/11. As ThinkProgress noted, her husband had done so on multiple occasions. [Link]

– Cheney criticized then-Senate candidate Jim Webb for including sexually explicit material in his novels, despite writing a novel that contains multiple scenes describing a lesbian love affair. [Link]

Cheney’s role in the country’s political discourse throughout the Bush presidency has been primarily that of an uncritical advocate of failed administration policy. Her nomination to the U.S. Senate would focus on her distracting, inaccurate rhetoric and do little to ensure the people of Wyoming were fairly represented.

Well if the Democrat Governor of Wyoming picks Lynne Cheney, to replace Craig Thomas who died, then he can tender his resignation to Dem. Party.

I am sure that Dick Cheney is trying to blackmail the Governor of Wyoming to appoint his wife senator, but this disgusting nepotism crap must END.

    Jay Randal,

But what if she is the lesser of the three evils?

So what is next the wives of every lousy politician in DC get to become Senators too someday? What the hell is wrong with this country? Bad enough Hillary Clinton was allowed to become a Senator and Liddy Dole too. Do you want Laura Bush to be a Senator next?

Lynn Cheney = the Bitch of Buchenwald. Seig Heil!

  17. Jay Randal Says:

Look up the word “crone,” because that is what Lynne is an old crone.

  18. Ashen Shard Says:

    Jay,

I’ve learned not to underestimate this administration or their Republican minions for their ability to find Neanderthals to fill a post … Even if we’ve done the research, checked it twice, and found that Lynne was indeed the worse that could possibly come out of Wyoming, the Republicans would go and find at least one other that we did not know of.

  19. m12 Says:

    Bill’s wife becoming a Senator = Good.
    Cheney’s wife becoming a Senator = Bad.

Hmm. At least Lynne Cheney fulfilled her marital duties so her husband didn’t go elsewhere.

I hope she is chosen. Whomever is picked has to stand for a reelection in 2008 and she’s a nutter and has no campaign experience. Further, her husband, last I heard, is at 19%. (Although I admit that’s a national number and probably not representative of Wyoming). Still, I think she’d be a weak opponent in 2008 - so weak that she might not even make it out of the primaries.

Also, don’t forget that the Cheney’s aren’t real Wyomingians(?). The only reason they “live” there is the short residency requirements and the Constitutional prohibition of the President and VP being from the same state.

  24. Angry One Says:

How will Lynne Cheney explain the family values in her 1981 novel Sisters, her tale of forbidden lesbian love in the Old West?

For more background on the perverse prose and titillating text of Lynne Cheney and others mouthpieces of the right, see:
    “Hard Liners, Soft Porn.”

  25. eve Says:

Oh, look! We have a visitor from the 1950s! Either that or post #22 is from a moron.

    A. Plenty of men enjoy great sex with their wives AND have sex with others.

    B. You have no idea if Lynn had Dick after all the kids were born. I’m betting NOT.

    C. You have no idea whether or not Dick has sex with people other than his wife. I’m betting NOT. He’s too ugly and mean and too busy screwing the whole world.

  26. Jay Randal Says:

If this is allowed, then Dick Cheney will replace the Governor of Wyoming with his lesbian daughter Mary Cheney and his other daughter will become the other Senator for Wyoming. This crap must be stopped now.

  27. Ashen Shard Says:

    Jay,
Well, there could be the remote possibility of something good coming out of Lynne getting the seat. The people of Wyoming could become fed up with the nepotism of this administration and the Republicans and vote Democratic in the next election that seat is vulnerable.

  28. pgw Says:

    “Bill’s wife becoming a Senator = Good.”

the people of new york state agree. she ran for office and won an election.

  29. GSD Says:

Let’s not forget Dick Cheney was out drinking and shooting with a woman who wasn’t his wife on the day he shot 80 year old Harry Whittington in the face with an expensive Italian shotgun and then avoided meeting the police until the alcohol ran out of his system.

Ashen > (I keep typing an “a” by mistake) > Once Lynne gets into the position, then it would be hard to get her out of the Senate. Dick Cheney would cheat if neccessary to keep her in the Senate. Democrats are very weak party in Wyoming.

  35. Jay Randal Says:

JPV > that is what I am afraid of. I will be back later > bye all.

  36. m12 Says:

the people of new york state agree. she ran for office and won an election.

yep. The people of Wyoming also elected this Dem Governor into office, giving him the power to appoint US Senate vacancies. If he chooses to appoint Cheney’s wife or one of his daughters, that’s how the process works.

  37. Roket Says:

Not only would this be nepotism but also a conflict of interest. Talk about gum up the works. A very strange coincidence too, I might add.

  38. Badger Says:

Lynne Cheney was on CNN’s Crossfire. She is a skilled propagandist for the military industrial complex. It would be wise to NOT underestimate her. Wyoming is a Red state, with a booming energy economy, and less people than some american cities. Wyoming did produce Alan Simpson …so there is hope.

  39. kasinca Says:

This bitch slept with Darth Vader, no heart, so she cannot be human.

  40. JG Says:

There is an entire chapter devoted to her in the book “Vice” (about Dick Cheney). The chapter is entitled “Lady MacCheney”. She is one VERY ambitious and competitive woman. They said she was as ideological as her husband. They had a lot to say and not much was flattering. She is her husband’s equal and scary in her own right.

That’s how the system works - why does that sound familiar? Oh yeah. It’s how Hitler and Stalin were able to hold onto power, and ignore democratic and moral values. You’re such a whiny little “moral-relativist” - st*pid little f*cker.

Give Lynnie the full-time opportunity to self-destruct in public as a U.S. Senator and she will make GDumbya look like a f–king Einstein. Just one more nail in the GOP coffin.

  53. Badger Says:

People, namely job seekers, have been pouring into Wyoming in direct correlation to energy prices. I’m not surprised that Wyoming elected a Democratic Governor.

  65. Sam Says:

OK, I understand this law in Wyoming, but why the hell is the Democratic Party letting that stop us? Don’t you think if the shoe were on the other foot the Republicans would ignore that law and say take us to court?

Why not seat a Democrat and let the Repubs sue. The law will either get upheld or not at the state level and then can be appealed to the Supreme Court. In the end, they would probably side with the Republicans but in the intervening two years there is another D vote and by the time its all adjudicated its time for the special election anyway. This also has the advantage of being able to tell Lieberman to go Cheney himself.

You can’t make the argument that this would set a bad precedent because by my reckoning the Republicans would do the same thing regardless of what happens in this case - they will always go for the throat.

What surprises me is the replies to this. The posters answered as if you were being truthful. They didn’t doubt your lie. They let you frame the debate. That is why progressives are losing against conservatives. They fight the battle on the conservatives ground. They let the cons frame the debate and make up the definitions. Skanky bitch, married to a thug.

  103. Jay Randal Says:

m12 must have the hots for Lynne Cheney, because he has been defending her bigtime in here. m12 must be a porky pig kind of guy who gets turned on by old crone broads like Lynne > lol.

  104. yathink Says:

Sounds like the perfect Republicon candidate to me. Governor Freudenthal needs a very good straw person and let us hope the Democratic party in WY puts up a viable candidate. Geez. I am so sick of these stupid games.

  105. Jay Randal Says:

I usually try not to mention the children of politicians, but something Mary Cheney said before she gave birth was very creepy. She told some press person, while pointing at her belly, that the child inside her is a gift from God. The odd thing is since she is a lesbian the baby was conceived in a petra dish by artificial insimination. God basically had nothing to do with it.

  106. flounder Says:

Some Washington rag like the Hill first floated this idea. It didn’t emanate from Wyoming. I called BS when I read it ten minutes after Thomas passed and I call BS now. This is a single source story that Washington gossipers invented. Plus, the only time she hase been in Wyoming since the ’70’s has been in gated communities in Jackson. Cubin has ran 3 straight campaigns soley on the fact she has lived here longer than her opponents and/or they lived in Jackson. In short she ruined the chances of them importing someone without a big uproar.

  107. jimbo DUDE Says:

  109. clio Says:

I’m amazed she floats in circles, you’d think she’d sink like a rock.

    -RUCerious - 6:58 pm

RU, you sound like my kind of person.

While I’d tend to agree that Lynne would be sunk by the weight of her mendacity alone, in the water trial the guilty witch floated. Only the innocent sank, and the faster the more innocent. Just exactly what good this proof of innocence did since the witch drowned if innocent or was fished out and burned if floating is an open question.

But back to Lynne: obviously the speaker knows something we don’t.
While I consider burning barbaric, I would be willing to entertain suggestions of updated punishments…

You mean god has something to do with it if the insemination happens inside the body but not the dish? It’s probably easier for god to nudge a sperm into an egg in the dish than to push semen up the uterus with his almighty fingers.

    Ewww.

Either way, I’m thinking he needs to get a hobby.

  111. Jake Says:

Does anyone NOT on the “Ignore List” have a link to Cheney’s name being on the D.C. Madams list? I would be SHOCKED that ABC News had that info and didn’t lede with it immiediately.

  112. mishaco Says:

this is a test baloon . if enough noise is made the administration will direct the governor of wyoming to pick some other crony . this test baloon will give determine the volume of the cronyism to be had in .

  113. Thinking Person Says:

Poll in statewide Wyoming newspaper about who should succeed Thomas shows Lynne Cheney getting only 2 percent of the votes:
    http://www.casperstartribune.net/

Gov Dave is very popular and I doubt there’s anything to blackmail him with. He’ll make a good choice based on several factors, most of all what’s best for his state,, short term and long term.

It’s pretty obvious that VERY few of those commenting in this thread have a clue about my state or its politics. Funny how many people feel free to talk about something they know nothing about.

  114. Jake Says:

    Thinking Person:

But what if she is the lesser of the three evils?

  115. glogrrl Says:

I see sponges…..with strings….and smell sulpher. Yeah, that shrill harpy will make one helluva senator. Why don’t we just crown them and flush the Constitution down the toilet? Oh, I forgot–they already did that. America’s loss.

  116. JPark Says:

Is it me or is she doing jello shots in that picture?

  117. Jake Says:

For the record, the Second Lady is blowing a whistle at the 2003 White House Easter Egg Roll in that photograph.

  118. JPark Says:

For the record a$$hole, I am on your list…ignore me.

  119. Jake Says:

If anyone NOT on the “Ignore List” wants to discuss the Second Lady in a civil manner, let me know and I will respond tomorrow. Here’s the link showing Mrs. Cheney at that Easter Egg Hunt:

  120. JPark Says:

Jake, you are kind of a jerk off.

  121. Jake Says:

    Anyone else?

  122. JPark Says:

Hehe, poor Jakey. He only wants to talk to people as stupid as he. He can’t find them here at TP.

  123. kristin Says:

The Wyoming Governor could appoint a so-called Republican to cover the law but one who will always vote with the Democrats. Think Lieberman: a Democrat who votes with the Republicans. So we could have our own Democratic Republican. Bet there are some Democrats in Wyoming who just figure that the label Republican is safer. How about it, Wyoming citizens. Is that a possibility?

  124. clb72 Says:

Thank you GOP! Lynne and her pure eeeeevil mug provide us Dems another boffo fundraising tool for ‘08!

  125. Wretched Refuse Says:

    Bill’s wife becoming a Senator = Good.
    Cheney’s wife becoming a Senator = Bad.

ANd of course, the Dem gets in by election
THE GOPer tries to get in

  126. Wretched Refuse Says:

    Bill’s wife becoming a Senator = Good.
    Cheney’s wife becoming a Senator = Bad.

Of course the DEM gets in by fully appealing to the constituency and being ELECTED
    The GOPer in contrast
Has to rely on subterfuge, and backoffice deals, and end run games.

What a bunch of pathetic sacks of protoplasm. I have no regard for GOP existance. I do not even consider them to be alive. They are mere sacks of primordilal ooze. Neither nascent nor alive. Squeeze the protoplasm out of each and every last one of the GOPers.

  127. DallasNE Says:

    Not to fear.

Wyoming law states that the Republican Party submit 3 names to the Governor and the Governor then picks which of those 3 will fill the vacant Senate seat. I find it far-fetched that the Democratic Governor would select Lynne Cheney for that position.

  128. AustinSF Says:

Question - Any reason to think the citizens of Wyoming will reject her appointment? (if iti happens) I’d bet that they will not - even most there would think it a novel idea. This state is still big GOP Country… doesn’t Dick still run the Cowboy State?

  129. Michele Says:

“Uncritical advocate?” “Distracting and inaccurate rhetoric?” You are too kind–no really. Lynn Cheney is a boldface liar and a dangerously manipulative political operative. She is also nauseatingly hypocritical. All of which make her the perfect candidate for political office.

  130. John B. Says:

The three people that the Governor will choose from will be as follows: Lynne Cheney, Colin Simpson and Max Maxfield. He will then choose either Lynne Cheney or Colin Simpson. Either way, Wyoming gets a GREAT senator!

  131. m12 Says:

Of course the DEM gets in by fully appealing to the constituency and being ELECTED
    The GOPer in contrast
Has to rely on subterfuge, and backoffice deals, and end run games.

Nobody “has to rely” on anything. Wyoming already had 2 strong GOP senators; Lynne Cheney never had any plans to be one of them.

But somebody has to fill the seat temporarily.

  132. candideinnc Says:

    Omigod! Not the SHREW!!!!!

  133. PaulB Says:

If you think the Dem. Governor of Wyoming is anywhere near the national party of John Kerry on the issues, I have a bridge to sell you!

Dear heart, considering that the majority of people in this country agree with “the national party of John Kerry” on the issues, I’d take that bridge. Nice try, though.

  134. PaulB Says:

The Wyoming Governor could appoint a so-called Republican to cover the law but one who will always vote with the Democrats.

No. The Wyoming Republican Party chooses the three candidates from which the Wyoming governor must choose. They will not select such a candidate to send to the governor.

  135. PaulB Says:

If anyone NOT on the ‘Ignore List’ wants to discuss the Second Lady in a civil manner

Dear heart, why on earth would anyone want to discuss anything with a mindless partisan clown who posts only partisan drivel?

  136. PaulB Says:

Poll in statewide Wyoming newspaper about who should succeed Thomas shows Lynne Cheney getting only 2 percent of the votes

While that is a factor, it’s not really a deciding factor. The Republican Party makes the call on which candidates to send to the governor and while I’m sure they will consider poll numbers, I doubt that they will base their choices on those polls. As already noted, it’s unlikely that the governor will select Cheney unless he’s convinced that she will be the weakest candidate when the seat next comes into open contention.

  137. PaulB Says:

Yep, the people of Wyoming believe in the Democratic agenda *soooooo* much Kerry got 29% of the vote in 2004!

Dear heart, you didn’t talk about “the people of Wyoming;” you made a very specific claim about the governor of Wyoming. Here, let me refresh your memory:

If you think the Dem. Governor of Wyoming is anywhere near the national party of John Kerry on the issues, I have a bridge to sell you!

Care to back up that claim, dear? We know you were simply making shit up, so there’s no harm in admitting it.

  138. Karim Says:

No way in hell would the Governor of WY allow her as a Senator.

  139. davefromqueens Says:

Lynne Cheney almost makes Paris Hilton seem likable, almost.
