Gonzales no-confidence vote set for Monday.

The Senate’s no-confidence vote on Attorney General Alberto Gonzales will take place Monday.

The nonbinding resolution would express the “sense of the Senate” that Gonzales “no longer holds the confidence of the American people.”

But the resolution’s sponsor, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), sounded uncertain the measure would receive the 60 votes needed for passage.

Six Republicans have called on Gonzales to resign but it’s unclear whether any of them will support a no-confidence vote.

“If all Senators who have actually lost confidence in Attorney General Gonzales voted their conscience, this vote would be unanimous,” Schumer said in a statement. “However, the president will certainly exert pressure to support the attorney general, his longtime friend. We will soon see where people’s loyalties lie.”

    Big waste of time.

Has anyone thought of how stupid the Dems are gonna look if this thing fails?

Jeebus….just impeach the lot of them.

  2. Katie says:

I don’t care if it doesn’t pass. I just want every Republic on record as to whether they support the politicization of the Justice Department. A vote against “no confidence” in Gonzales will be their vote supporting the politicizing of the department. Then, any Democrat who is running against the lemming Republic will be able to run an ad saying that “John Doe supports Alberto Gonzales and the politicization of our Justice Department”. It works for me! Besides, even it it passes, it will not force Gonzales to resign. So, getting the Lemming Republics on record is what I want to see happen.

  3. Jay Randal says:

Impeach him instead of voting for this silly no-confidence thing.

  4. heyzeus says:

It’s a sad commentary on America, the land of the free, and the home of the brave, when it comes to the juncture of choosing loyalty over doing the job required of the position.

  5. Jay Randal says:

Zooey > I think the Democrat leadership wants it to fail, but they will claim they stood up to Gonzales > lol.

  6. Redneck, Redstate says:

This is where Arkansas Republican Party, Dennis Milligan will take center stage.

  7. kingweasil says:

no,get them on record.the american people want to see what’s what.the dems already screwed the public voting for the war funding, and i hope it comes back and bites them in the ass.they’ll wake up sooner or later.

    Comment by Zooey

Can they actually look any stupider than they already do???

It’s time to give up on both parties. People need to start voting in Independents and Libertarians, if the want REAL change.

  9. War4Sale says:

Please call your senators and let them know how you want them to vote on this – (202) 224-3121.

  10. profmarcus says:

if congress can’t pull their collective heads out long enough to go on record with this criminal, is there any hope for anything else happening…? i think not…

And, yes, I DO take it personally

  11. JPV says:

I think the Democrat leadership wants it to fail, but they will claim they stood up to Gonzales > lol.

    Comment by Jay Randal

    Yeah, my sentiments EXACTLY.

It seems that more and more people are realizing that neither party serve the interest of the public.

STOP VOTING FOR REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS ALREADY!

There are numerous other parties to vote for.

We need to get out of this idiotic feedback loop of constant “he said, she said” BS.

BOTH PARTIES SUCK! DO SOMETHING ABOUT!

  12. wellstoner says:

Keep gonzo on the front burner

    Comment by JPV

Attitudes regarding party do not change that fast, and they certainly won’t change quickly enough for the 2008 elections.

At this point, I would say a third party vote would have the same effect it did in 2000.

    Jast sayin’

  14. Jay Randal says:

JPV > I agree with you. Both parties have gone down the same sewer of corruption now. They just play Good Cop versus Bad Cop stuff to fool us into thinking they care. Bush is up to something, because as the Congress acts stupid, Dubya is preparing to attack Iran.

  15. dlet says:

Bush goes to war and keeps troops in Iraq as an occupational force and they vote on a non-binding resolution. Gonzo fires an hires attorneys motivated by politics and lies to Congress and they will vote on a non-binding resolution. We all know these things are bad. We don’t need a show of hands to see this. Put it in a binder and do something about it.

Lot of things have changed since then.

In most of the online polls that I’ve seen, Ron Paul is CLEARLY ahead of the rest of the Republican idiots.

However the media just ignores him, as if he doesn’t even exist.

And I don’t buy any of the BS that his supporters are “gaming” the polls. I’m sure that all of the bigger candidates have numerous paid operative that are quite capable of doing the same for them too.

People ARE indeed ready for a change.

  17. Grand Moff Texan says:

Six Republicans have called on Gonzales to resign but it’s unclear whether any of their balls have dropped.

    Fixed your typo.

    Comment by JPV

I agree, people are ready for a change — but are ENOUGH people ready for a change?

I don’t want another 4-8 years of Republican rule.

  19. Jane E. Schneider says:

I agree with Katie and with Wellstoner. We need the Republiskunks on record voting for the criminally incompetent status quo, AND we need to keep AGAG and his amazing stupidity out in America’s face.

  20. Namtillaku says:

L O L No confidence vote. What an f’ing joke. Anyone care to take a guess how this will go?

  21. Tobey Tall says:

    Going, Going, Gonzo!

One can only hope. Of course Chimpy will most likely replace Gonzo with someone even worse. Par for the course for Smirky McDumbass.

    Comment by JPV

Independants largely will fail to win.
We need to push for new democrat replacements (that will Do the Right Thing) of the losers currently in office, that were the lapdogs of the 109th.
Yes, that means Nancy “Impeachment off theTable” Pelosi and Harry “Wimp” Reid too, IMHO.
Oh and f*ck the Republicans, Replace them with new democrats (that will Do the Right Thing) too

  24. Wayne says:

Ron Paul is there to capture the anti war vote FOR republicans, Hes a geuine bloke BUT its to trick voters ???
    Comment by Tobey Tall

Ron Paul is also a racist. Just saying.

  25. Namtillaku says:

Sure, I’ll take a stab. You’re going to see one of two things. One – they get a majority on the no confidence vote, specifically because it is non-binding, then use that as a badge, “see, I voted against Gonzales – give me your money and votes”. Or two, they expose their yellow spines to us once again, voting it down.

  26. Peter says:

I want both a “no confidence” vote AND impeachment. Our media doesn’t allow us to be subtle with the voting public; we’ve got to pound this in. The administration is doing illegal, unethical, immoral, unconstitutional things. The more of them that are exposed, the better the chances that the people force Congress to act on impeachment. I’m impatient to get to impeachment, too, but we’ve got to break through the media and mental block around impeachment. We must continue to highlight the criminality of the Bush clan any way we can and make the Republican party either go down with Bush or abandon him to impeachment.

We had a clear vote in the Senate judiciary committee yesterday where all the Republicans (except Specter) abandoned habeus – a core concept of our system of government, and every Democrat voted to restore it. We need many more votes like this so that people see that there is a difference.

  27. dominic says:

There is no down side to this, so long as at least the Democrats in the senate are unified in voting no confidence. If just one new Democrat is elected to the senate in 2008 by persuading voters that his opponent is a Bush rubberstamp over the Gonzales disgrace, this no-confidence vote is worth it. although I would have preferred their srategy had been beginning actual impeachment proceedings against Gonzales instead of a no-confidence vote.

  28. pgw says:

“I just want every Republic on record as to whether they support the politicization of the Justice Department.”

bingo. that’s the whole point of this.

  29. CompTROLLER V-1 says:

Why hasn’t the House considered impeachment for Gonzalez? They have the demographics to do so, and Nancy didn’t take that off the table. Could they actually impeach Gonzalez?

NO CONFIDENCE! Wait, my vote doesn’t count? Nevermind….

  30. powkat says:

Not to defend the Dems – they need to get a whole lot tougher with the thugs running the show – but it is Repubs that are blocking everything. Take the vote and then take it back to their districts. And we can write letters to the editor (I know, I know, but keep trying) and make the point – especially those of us who live in red states and red districts (here in the People’s Republic of Portland we’re true blue, but I’m working against Gordo.)

Does anyone else remember Peter Rodino, with the saddest face ever, voting to send a bill of impeachment against Nixon? That is what Republicans could be, once a long, long time ago.

  31. Wayne says:

    Could they actually impeach Gonzalez?
    Comment by CompTROLLER V-1

Sure he could be impeached and removed from office, if Nancy can find a fscking table…….

  32. hkeller says:

The Congress can lock the Ag out of his office and from using any government property with a simple majorty vote if they want. Gonzales would have to work from his car without use of government phones or internet.

  33. dixie blood says:

I don’t think the AG can be impeached although I scream for it everyday!!!

    IMPEACH AG THE AG!! (arg!)

I think the best route is to charge him with crimes have him and also begin disbarment proceedings as a second strategy.

  34. pgw says:

“The Congress can lock the Ag out of his office”

then when he asks congress if they have the key to his office, congress can reply, “i don’t recall.”

All it would take is for Pelosi to get over her table phobia. =P

    Sure they can….

    Section 4 – Disqualification

The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.

  37. criticalthinker says:

I am sick of the Democrats and would like to vote 3rd party, but all that would do is give the Republicans 4 more years.

You have to vote for the lessor of two evils.

If people had done that in Florida in 2000 or the Supreme Court did not appoint GW, we would not be in the position we are in today!

    beautiful!!! let’s get this done…now!!!

  39. veritas says:

While Congress is at it why don’t they do a “no confidence” vote on the President, the Veep, Secretary of State and the entire Bush administration…..then when they’ve finished with that, why don’t they do a “no confidence poll” of the american people on the Congress itself so they can really get a glimpse of just how dissatisfied and disgusted the american people are in this new congress! It’d be a real eye opener.

If, for example, this immigration bill was “supposed to be” drawn up according to the wishes of the “legal americans”, then it’s clear that they are totally out of touch with reality. If, on the other hand, it was designed with input only from illegals and the corporations which own this government outright, then it makes perfect sense.

  40. RUCerious says:

Along with a vote of no confidence, they should tell him the Magna Carta is not a huge bottle of champagne.

  41. veritas says:

#36 As we all know, they all can be impeached and there is plenty of “high crimes & misdemeanors” to go round. The sad fact is that it’s beginning to appear that the american public has been “duped”, once again, by the dems we trusted to do something courageous, moral, and necessary and they are failing all of us miserably right now.

Instead of engaging in this tortuous game of mental masturbation with all of these hearings droning on and on, wouldn’t it just be easier to impeach the entire cabal – once and for all? Wouldn’t we then at least have some assurance that the continuation of these crimes would be stopped? Two more years of these high crimes will surely tank this country and yet, and yet, and yet…..the Dems dither themselves into oblivion in this circle-jerk game of mental masturbation….I simply fail to get it!

  42. veritas says:

RU: You got it! I’ve been polling friends and associates and the level of anger which is seething just sub-surface these days is growing to a fever pitch. It’s pushing people into shrink’s offices by the droves – people are feeling so disconnected from having any voice in their government. People are appalled to hear about all of the unnecessary murders of innocent iraqis – women and children, yes! Not to mention the slaughter of 3,500 of our own patriots who believed in their adult role models who have led them to their own slaughter….for what?? For lies?? For oil, aha! Thar ’tis! The ugly truth…..lives for oil! Doesn’t get more hypocritical than that I’m afraid.

As well, people are leaving this country by the droves. They are totally disenchanted in it and feel so alien to what’s occurring that they do not want to be associated with it any longer. The mass migration of americans to Canada is really astounding these days.

Now that the Dems appear to be totally “impotent” to get anything credible done (and they could have stood up to Bush if they wanted to; after all, they do control the purse strings and without money, our troops would be coming home next month!)…..

Then you’ve got the Iraqi Parliament voting for us to get our sorry asses out of their country and thwarting Bush’s takeover of their oil wells …. they’re not stupid. Sure, get us to pay for their civil war with our money and our lives….but now they can see that we’re reaching for their oil and that’s “off limits”…..they’re far more clever than we are, that’s certain.

  43. Bob says:

No confidence in the entire administration! With a major national disaster every other year, there is no reason to have any confidence in this executive branch.

we know where their bread is buttered…. we know Speedy Gonzales is the best America can do. We know our President dfank beer, even though he says it is non alcholic. Noone believes a word out of DC.

  47. hkeller says:

The Senate should un-confirm the Attorney General.
The the President should nominate someone who is above reproach. The Congres can lock Gonzales out of his building on a voice vote.

  48. Jake says:

“Unconfirm”?! Yeah, that’s in the Constitution too.

  49. Aggie says:

Whether or not Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has the President’s support, or Republican support, he does not have my support. Nor does he have the support of the American people with whom I come in contact, people who belong to the minority of Americans who do vote.
In a democracy we must be able to trust the Justice Department to be as fair and as impartial as possible. This Department of Justice, under the leadership of Alberto Gonzales, undermines the thinking person’s ability to have any faith whatsoever in American justice.
I would like to see him gone. Should the vote of no confidence fail, at least I will know, by name, which Senators continue to have faith in his ability to effectively serve in his position. Should the vote of no confidence pass, only President Bush can be held responsible should he remain. As a voter, I deserve to know which side of the fence our elected officials sit.
