Military said to be embracing Korea model.

Sunday’s Washington Post front-pages a story entitled “Military Envisions Longer Stay in Iraq.” The article states military officials are simultaneously planning for a drawdown and a “smaller, longer-term force that would remain in the country for years“:

This goal, drawn from recent interviews with more than 20 U.S. military officers and other officials here, including senior commanders, strategists and analysts, remains in the early planning stages. It is based on officials’ assessment that a sharp drawdown of troops is likely to begin by the middle of next year, with roughly two-thirds of the current force of 150,000 moving out by late 2008 or early 2009. The questions officials are grappling with are not whether the U.S. presence will be cut, but how quickly, to what level and to what purpose.

We're liberators, not occupiers. Yeah, right. Who needed a remake of M*A*S*H? Probably not the Iraqis.

i spent some time yesterday talking to various folks around the va hospital here... i was amazed to find that very few had even heard that the u.s. was building permanent military bases in iraq and a taj-mahal style embassy complex in baghdad... with some follow-up questions, i determined - no surprise - that they got their news from television, both cable and network, and the local newspaper... they were startled when i told them and all commmented, "why don't we know about this...?"

i sincerely believe that, if the american people were being given the full news of what's going on, people would be taking to the streets... but, then again, maybe not...

And, yes, I DO take it personally

How many deaths (foreign and American)?

Will the Iranians, Russians, Chinese, Arabs, Isralis, Turks, agree to this?

If not, do we believe they will sit idly by while we make a highly illegal and immoral resource grab?

What if another backwards-assed country like Afghanistan or Somalia gets uppity and starts threatening us or otherwise unbalancing the status quo?

    What about America?

Do we have a 50 year plan? I'll bet we don't (at least not a credible one).

    And....AND...

Of course the fucking military is all for this. 4 years of military training at taxpayer expense, and then it's into the mercenary forces at 10X the pay.

You know what? They should have a draft, and the first people drafted should be the contractors already employed in Iraq. This a war, goddamnit, and there is no room in the budget to pay for an Army above and beyond the one we already have.

This 50 year war idea is moronic - and that's being generous. It ranks right up there with Bush's. "We're going on a mission to Mars" speech.

The Pentagon and the Congress are selling our entire nation down the river on Iraq. South Korea wants US troops, and bases, but the Iraqis do not. Plus the Bush Regime wants the BIG OIL corporations to loot Iraq of its petroleum reserves. There will be death and mayhem in Iraq as long as the US remains there.

  36. bc76 Says:

This is a typical politician's "solution"--a compromise between withdrawing and not withdrawing. That way "consensus" can be built around a strategy. The trouble is that the strategy doesn't make any sense. Except, of course, to protect the oil fields while chaos reigns in the cities.

  40. Jay Randal Says:

What is happening in Iraq is the same as the US government did to the Native American Indians. US govt. wanted their land, so the Indians were for the most part slaughtered and the remaining ones put on reservations. Sen. Biden has suggested putting Sunnis on reservations and forcing the Shiites to all live in Southern Iraq.

  41. JPark Says:

Jay, good point. Biden's "idea" may sound like a good idea at first. However, if you split up Iraq you would have to open up the oil can of worms (something Exxon doesn't want you to do). The Sunnis would get screwed in any seperation plan. The Kurds would go to war with Turkey. Biden has no clue what he is talking about.

The pathetic trolls who hide behind ex presidential handles should take on the handle Martin Van Buren.
He stood only 5 feet 6 inches, was a fastidious dresser, and was quite a nice fellow.
The son of a tavernkeeper and farmer, he married the lovely Hannah Hoes.
He is best remembered for his inability to stem the economic crises of the panic of 1837 and the ensuing depression.
Van Buren's remedy--continuing Jackson's deflationary policies--only deepened and prolonged the depression.

He should be held near and dear to each faux president's heart, as a rather clueless president whose inablity to think independently caused the American people a decade of economic suffering.

Here's an interesting tidbit about Mr & Mrs Van Buren

Cousins in a close-knit Dutch community, Hannah Hoes and Martin Van Buren grew up together in Kinderhook, New York. Evidently he wanted to establish his law practice before marrying his sweetheart--they were not wed until 1807, when he was 24 and his bride just three months younger. Apparently their marriage was a happy one, though little is known of Hannah as a person

Iraq has not signed the oil deal... 30% for them and 70% for the oil corp... right? I am curious, maybe holding out hope this contract will fail and they will absolutely demand we leave. If this happens, how could Bush possibly justify continued occupation? To some that justify all the mayhem as they secretly think we will have lower gas prices - this will not happen.
We are spending thousands of lives and billions in tax payer money to support the military and civilian contractors to carry out this deal that will only benefit Bush's buddies.

Dammit just look at the people of Palestine. Those Palestinians live lives worse than animals under the thumb of a terrorist state and have less rights than the slaves had in the cotton-picking South. Have you seen their spirit broken by 60+ years of oppression?

The theft of Iraqi oil is not out of the question. We fuc#ed up and the situation is beyond salvation. Iran will never allow it to happen and we have lost all ability to do something about Iran.

We can deal with it or die there of a thousand cuts. I just hope we make the right choice.

  56. Jay Randal Says:

The Oil revenue-sharing agreement is really an OIL swindle enactment. Taking 70%+ of Iraq's OIL for free is robbery. The fiasco in Iraq makes me puke chunks and I hope someday everybody involved in this mess gets a prison term.

Zooey > take care and yes Biden has gone off the deep end. Iraq could be divided into 3 viable nations: Kurdistan in the north, Sunni Iraq in the middle, and Shiite Iraq in the south, but the OIL fields would have to be divided up equally between them. Biden is not interested in dividing Iraq fairly.

Boycott American Goods for your lifetime

  63. Tobey Tall Says:

The US military is holding 19000 Iraqis, 16000 of them at Bucca. Although most are guerrillas or their helpers, a lot of them were picked up because they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Once arrested, an inmate often cannot clear himself for months or years. I don't think they have access to attorneys. No one cares if they are depressed. At Abu Ghraib earlier on, some inmates were systematically tortured. It is unlear if all such practices have ceased.

Some Iraqi women have been held in this way. Some were essentially hostages, taken to make them reveal where their husbands or fathers were or to guarantee their good behavior. Their reputations were shot, since Iraqis think Americans are sex fiends and wouldn't trust the virtue of a woman who had been in their custody. The unmarried among them are likely doomed to be spinsters.

  64. JTitor Says:

Thanks for flaming my post TP. You allow posts to talk about "Here’s an interesting tidbit about Mr & Mrs Van Buren", yet thre posts today were flamed. Fu@king annoying.

  65. Jaded Prole Says:

Any comparison to Korea is patently ridiculous. The situation in Itaq is much more similar to the Israeli occupation of Palestine -- resistance, infighting, and collective punishment. Bothe are crimes against humanity that must end.

  66. Badger Says:

If the insurgents are able to plant IED's with our troops going everywhere, think how many they could plant when our troops are confined to their "Lillypad" enclaves. If this new strategy is going to work, they better find a way to get around without using the ROADS. Especially since many of these IED's are being planted by Iraqi police and Army infiltrators.

  67. celtic cynic Says:

And how do our illustrious military leaders propose to safeguard our troops? In Korea, there is a heavily fortified demilitarized zone between the two countries that is a no-mans land because of land mines, guard towers, etc.; this serves as a physical barrier, a deterrent to invasion.
There is nothing similar in Iraq. The opposing forces in this civil war are separated by a street or a wall or less. In some cases, they're next door neighbors.
So that leaves our soldiers, fewer in number, more vulnerable, more concentrated, less able to defend themselves, while the brass hats that thought up this "plan" are either enjoying a nice retirement or a nice safe job in a nice comfortable office somewhere in the pentagon.

  68. Badger Says:

It is based on officials’ assessment that a sharp drawdown of troops is likely to begin by the middle of next year, with roughly two-thirds of the current force of 150,000 moving out by late 2008 or early 2009.
Who are the officials making this "assessment"?? What MISSION will be accomplished by then???
Sounds to me like the "Decent Interval" strategy from the Viet Nam War. The "Officials" KNEW the war was lost , but delayed our exit to save FACE and hope for the Impossible. The results were a Longer Wall!!

  69. Tom3 Says:

This was Chimpy's plan all along. Build permanent bases and stay for the oil.

This will be an October Surprise, using our troops' blood to swing the election.

  70. tarazan Says:

I don't know why American policy makers want to be everywhere on this planet..We are building a huge empire called USA.

We are in over 133 countries. The founders of this country did not want to build an empire.
The more we build bases all over the globe the more we burden the taxpayer with more money and expenses.

The 'military industrial complex' seems to have no end in it goals to put us in every country on this planet.
They are now working on establishing presence in Africa. All of this cost billions of dollars; and where it will all come from...?!
    from the pockets of taxpayers..!

  71. Badger Says:

The Chinese seem to be everywhere on this planet. They are establishing a presence in Africa....the motherload of underdeveloped critical mineral resources.
BUT they seem to be doing it without Military Bases and Aircraft Carriers. They seem to be doing it by Mutually Beneficial economic relationships.
So why aren't WE doing it that way. GREED? ENORMOUS DEFENSE SPENDING??

Excuse me, but has anyone bothered to ask Iraq how they feel about this? Do you really think that Iraq is going to embrace being occupied by the US for 50 years?

It's going to be very interesting to see, when the Iraq Parliament gets back from their two month's vacation and vote to ask us to leave, what Bush will do. He's on record as saying that if they ask us to leave, we will leave. I'll bet his approach will be to not recognize the Iraq Parliament as their "government" and only recognize his hand-picked stooges.

Do these military leaders really think that Iraq is going to sit passively by and allow us to occupy their country via an 100 acre embassy and permanent bases. I don't think so!

  81. Kate Henry Says:

"What happened to the Iraqi parliament’s vote that they wanted U.S. troops out?"

They didn't actually vote to ask us to leave. They did something like our "sense of the senate" to see what people were thinking. And people were thinking they were going to ask us to leave. After they did that, they went on a two month vacation. So, we have to wait until they are back from vacation to see if they follow through with their vote.

My answer is to draft Gore. He has been against the war in Iraq from the beginning, and I believe he'd get us out of this mess.

who is this Korean model? is she more of a runway model, or a magazine model?

  88. Squonk Says:

The military industrial complex must be drooling at the idea of indefinite occupation.

The PNAC must think this is the destined course for the United States. Delusional motherf*ckers.

  89. theswan Says:

They sold this BS to the American people just tooo many times.
Is WAR the only way to advance the capitalistic system? Is this capitalistic system only able to survive with the point of a gun?

  90. 1984 Says:

This is not news as the PNAC document "rebuilding americas defences" released in september 2000 said that USA needs to have permanent boots on the ground in the middle-east.
Like Brzezinski said the South Koreans actually welcomed USA but the Iraqis do not:

  91. Alejandro Says:

How long will it take before the troops start to rebel against a permanent occupation?

  92. Kar-Shtak Avaar Says:

Just for everyone's info about comment 73: JOEL PHILLIPS is the frontline shrill for a hate site run by that wacky flying saucer cult, $cientology. This crappy website has nothing to do with "religious freedom", it's a smear site for anyone speaking out about the $cientology kooks. The idiot Phillips was captured on video saying his slam site won't won't correct their libel and lies, stating "we don't have that obligation" when someone took issue with the five pages of absolute lies written about her on it. Now Joel is spamming blogs and web forums all over the place with the same whines you see here.
