Lieberman: ‘We’ve Got To Be Prepared To Take Aggressive Military Action’ Against Iran»

This morning on CBS’s Face the Nation, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) strongly advocated preparing for a strike against Iran.

“I think we have to be prepared to take aggressive military action against the Iranians to stop them from killing Americans in Iraq,” Lieberman said. Host Bob Schieffer followed-up: “Let’s just stop right there. Because I think you probably made some news here, Senator Lieberman. You’re saying that if the Iranians don’t let up, that the United States should take military action?” “I am,” Lieberman responded.

Lieberman added that “if there’s any hope” of stopping Iran’s nuclear program, “we can’t just talk to them. … We’ve got to use our force and to me that would include taking military action.” Watch it:

Inside the Bush administration, there has been a reported divergence of views regarding how to approach Iran. The State Department, led by Condoleezza Rice, has advocated a diplomatic course for resolving differences with Iran, a strategy that recently led to the first formal talks between U.S. and Iran in the last 27 years.

Vice President Cheney, on the other hand, reportedly believes the “diplomatic track with Iran is pointless, and is looking for ways to persuade Bush to confront Iran militarily.” Steve Clemons of the Washington Note wrote recently that “Cheney is planning to deploy an ‘end run strategy’ around the President if he and his team lose the policy argument,” and is meeting with Iran war advocates at the American Enterprise Institute to piece together a coalition. It appears Lieberman is on board.

Digg It!

Who cares if Iran has nukes? They have two main enemies, Israel (who has nukes) and America (who has even more nukes). So even if they had nukes, they couldn’t use them or they would be instantly destroyed.

What’s to stop some other country from saying this:

    Hmmmm?

“I think we have to be prepared to take aggressive military action against the Iranians to stop them from killing Americans in Iraq,” Lieberman said.

Oh yeah? Lets see the proof or STFU.

Lieberman added that “if there’s any hope” of stopping Iran’s nuclear program, “we can’t just talk to them. … We’ve got to use our force and to me that would include taking military action.”

Last I checked, they only talked to the Iranians for 1 day. Maybe they need to spend a teeny bit more time trying.

Vice President Cheney, on the other hand, reportedly believes the “diplomatic track with Iran is pointless, and is looking for ways to persuade Bush to confront Iran militarily.”

Again… the last I checked, they only talked to the Iranians for 1 day.

  10. RealityCheck Says:

It’s worth noting that Mullen, the new Joint Chiefs of Staff nominee, and Fallon, the Centcom Commander, are both Navy guys who have been put in there by Gates via the influence of Cheney, because they are both strong about attacking Iran. Cheney’s getting all the chess pieces on the board in place.

No one believes this crap about “proof” and “bases” and “evidence”. We’ve seen it all before.

The real war is the war for the soul of America.

  12. Chris L Says:

Since the NeoCons have recently fallen back in love with the Korean War, a little bit of history applies here too. In 1951, there was concern that the Chinese were supplying weapons and material to North Korea. Top military personnel were discussing a military invasion of China, because of this. General Omar Bradley responded, “The wrong war, at the wrong place, at the wrong time, and with the wrong enemy”.

  17. Ben Dover Says:

You would think that Joe might get the message with his “president” at 28 percent in the polls that being a war monger isn’t a wise thing. But all Joe cares about is Israel and threats to it. He’s more than willing to sacrifice American kids and billions of American dollars in the name of the terrorist state of Israel. I sincerely hope that the voters of Connecticut now understand what they got when they insisted on returning Joe and his years in Congress back to Congress. I also hope
that they have the fortitude to initiate a recall election to get this piece of flotsam out of the Congress. I am not from Connecticut but Holy Joe is an embarassment to me. I can only imagine what people from the state think of the chief propagandist for the Bush administration in the Senate.

  18. Jay Randal Says:

Would somebody get to work on a “recall” of this lying POS and the joker lips he shares with Bill Kristol to spew their vile warmongering propaganda.

How many times did he repeat that little line “Iranians killing Americans” over and over and there is ZERO evidence of that.

    ZERO.

  21. Kate Henry Says:

““I think we have to be prepared to take aggressive military action against the Iranians to stop them from killing Americans in Iraq,””

I think we have to be prepared to take aggressive military action against the United States government to stop them from allowing Americans to be killed in Iraq.

Anyone wonder how hyped the so-called involvement of Iran in Iraq is? Could it be like the pre-war intel? I have, as yet to see any hard proof that Iran is involved in Iraq. And if we are going after nations who are helping people in Iraq kill Americans, then I do believe we should be setting our sights on the Saudis who are giving material aid to the Sunnis.

Can’t Connecticut impeach LIEberman. He lied to his constituents to get elected, there must be something they can do to hold him accountable for his lies.

As to “not allowing Iran to have a nuke”, I have to ask, “who made us boss”? Who are we to say who can have a nuke and who can’t. Pakistan has a nuke and they are harboring Osama bin Laden. They are also aiding the Taliban. Israel has nukes and I believe they are the country that is most likely to use one, unprovoked. Countries have nukes as a “deterrent” against aggression towards them by other countries. Considering all the aggression that Iran is threatened with, I see no reason why they can’t have a nuke like the other middle-eastern countries that have them.

  24. Kate Henry Says:

Joe LIEberman actually has nothing left to lose. He knows that Connecticut is never going to elect him again. I believe that he is trying to align him with the side where he thinks he will have the greatest financial gain once he is no longer in government. That day can’t come soon enough for me.

  32. spit take Says:

This whole “Iran is killing our troops in Iraq” meme is nonsense.

Iran is Shiite. We have put the Shiites in power in Iraq. The insurgency is largely Sunni. Our troops are primarily dying at the hands of Sunni insurgents. I doubt very seriously if Iran is supplying Sunnis with weapons.

If it suited the administration’s purposes (and Lieberman’s, although it goes without saying that their purposes are one and the same), then you know they would be talking about Sunni insurgents.

But it works better for them if people think that the Iraqis are all freedom-loving people who want to get along, but they can’t because foreign al-Qaeda terrorists keep making trouble. And if the “Sunni” part of the insurgency was highlighted, then more Americans might put two-and-two together and realize that Iran’s part in the deaths of Americans is really minimal.

  33. Jay Randal Says:

CT has no recall provision to get rid of a wayward nut Senator like Joseph LIEberman. Joe believes that he can crap on his state for the next 5 and 1/2 years, so from his safe perch in the Senate he advocates for war on Iran. An attack on Iran must likely would set off global WWIII, but old Joe does not care and wants us all to die. Progressives need to flood Sen. Harry Reid’s office in DC with faxes demanding that LIEberman be dumped out from his committee leadership position. Here is the FAX number in DC for Harry: 202-224-7327, and here is Joe’s FAX number: 202-224-9750.

Good people of Connecticut - wish you could have removed this piece of excrament! Maybe next time.. Hopefully after the ‘08 elections he and all the other Republicans (he basically is one on all the important issues) will be completely irrelevant.. hopefully!

  37. John the Elder Says:

A group of Democratic Congresspersons need to go on record and say that if Cheney and company make any move whatsover against Iran, in any way endangering the fragile situation in the Middle East, such persons whoever they may be will be instantly impeached and suffer the full penalty for treason which is summary execution. Do any Dems have the guts and patriotism to do that? It remains to be seen.

  38. pgw Says:

“Iran is Shiite. We have put the Shiites in power in Iraq. The insurgency is largely Sunni. Our troops are primarily dying at the hands of Sunni insurgents.”

yup. and the i.s.g. report specifically mentions money flowing to the sunnis from saudi arabia. but that’s never brought up, and in many ways, it’s the same type of stovepiping, or ’selective intelligence,’ that was ever so helpful in 2002.

  40. knaemald Says:

Lierman is working to destroy the United States. He is a seditious criminal in cahoots with the cabal that stole the office and control of the once great US. A coup occured in 2000, a silent destruction of democracy. Sad really. We might have been something great for this earth except greed got in the way. No better profit than war and killing. Greed has usurped the justice and freedom we once thought of as our attributes and now we have become an ugly and ruinous thing.

  41. david Says:

I once knew a guy in college who would get drunk and pick fights with other guys in the bar. He’d keep doing it until someone knocked him down. I think this is the Neo-con philosophy too.

What makes Cheney think Iran wouldn’t respond to an attack? And have right on their side? I mean, Iran has exocet missles that could sink most of the aircraft carriers in the Gulf. Iran has a much bigger army than Saddam had and can easily move across the border into Iraq. Honestly, the 150,000 American GIs can barely hold Iraq now, what are they going to do with a massive army attacking them from the East and North? And do Americans really want to be paying $10/gallon for gas?

The Neo-cons are most dangerous now. They’ve only a year and a half left and so much hasn’t been done. And what they pathetically deny is that what they have done is unravelling us we speak. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have been lost. The deficit is at record highs. The US dollar is in freefall. And the once great American military has been reduced to a chaotic mess. Good work, boys! Osama bin Laden couldn’t have done better himself. Indeed, if one paid attention to what OBL said were his objectives, America would know that he wanted Bush to invade Iraq and to bleed America to death in pointless and unwinnable wars that would bankrupt America and kill thousands of GIs.

  42. Jay Randal Says:

Joe is a Trojan-Horse GOPer agent, so he threatens to join the Republicans using that as blackmail against Harry Reid. The Democrats in the Senate would be better off to kick LIEberman out of the party and tell Reid that he has blown his position by NOT backing Ned Lamont last year.

Great man and a great Senator.

  52. OxyCon Says:

Attack Iran with what? Spit balls?
Bush, Cheney and Joe Loserman have run our military into the ground. You don’t start wars when you have already destroyed your armed forces. All we are capable of doing to Iran is to lob cruise missiles at them. Iran on the other hand has a multitude of options should we invade. They can launch overwhelming numbers of troops to confront our troops in Iraq or Afghanistan; they can launch their missiles at targets throughout Europe; they can cause acts of terrorism against us that would make 9-11 look like child’s play. And remember, the Persian gulf is a very confined space to be having your Navy, in this day and age.
Watch the price of gas skyrocket because of Joe Loserman’s loose lips. It’s really too bad that POS snuck his way back into the Senate. I think the people of Connecticut should find a legal way to remove him from office.

  53. Jay Randal Says:

lynn post 46 > that is a good idea. Every patriotic American should boycott CT. Do not vacation in that state, do not buy anything from CT, and demand that all federal funding be cut off for them too. CT must be punished till they stand-up and force LIEberman to resign from Senate.

  54. impeachcheneythenbush Says:

First of all, Cheney appears to be plotting a “coup.” Forget impeachment….arrest him. Secondly, Lieberman should register as a “foreign agent,” as he transparently (unless one is blind) represents Israel. He then should be expelled from the Senate, since it is illegal to serve as a representative of a foreign nation and hold office in the U.S.

  55. Mr. President Says:

“I think we have to be prepared to take aggressive military action against the Iranians to stop them from killing Americans in Iraq,” Lieberman said.

  62. CompTROLLER V-1 Says:

May as well quit complaining. The final treat that the administration will leave us with, is poised to be the leveling of Iran. (new Chairman, JCS, anybody?) Good or bad? I don’t know. This does carry the possibility of triggering World War III because of Iran’s more capable state of returning fire (when compared to Iraq, anyways).

We have to gear up somehow because we don’t have a choice.

    Not just you.

  65. JG Says:

Bush only has two weeks left with Tony Blair in office. Blair was his only really support in this horrible mess.
I wonder if something will happen to trigger all this expanding beyond the border of Iraq before he leaves. I think you will start hearing all kinds of “proof” and accusations towards Iran over the next two weeks..
They have been trying for months to pin something on Iran but nothing has been really stickingup till now. Then you had Cheney last month on that aircraft carrier basically telling Iran we were coming. I think these guys think they have free reign now to do whatever they want, regardless of what all of America wants. Once they start bombing, Bush can just call it the kind of security incident that enables him to declare martial law and he can make himself into the “dictator” he always wanted to be.

  66. gummitch Says:

Maybe this is all a distraction. I mean, even the morons in the White House can see that we lack the troops needed to invade yet another (much larger) country. Yeah, sure, ships, planes and all, but you still need ground troops and we don’t have them. So maybe the whole strategy is that opponents get so distracted by the possibility of an invasion that they pay less attention to the disaster of the Iraq occupation. “Everything is screwed up, but at least they haven’t invaded Iran. Whew.”

Maybe. Or maybe they are even more stupid than I believe. I know they want to “win” something; why not take a page from the Gipper’s book and invade someone easy? I can see the NYT now: “Top officials within the administration told us, secret hush hush, that it is an incontrovertible fact that Greenland is sponsoring Islamic terrorism, increasing global warming, and killing polar bears.”

This infantry company would be established to enable those of the “let’s you and him fight” mentality to (finally) step up to the plate and do their civic duty, not to mention putting their sweet asses on the line.

How long will it take for those Dems in CT who voted for Lie-berman to admit that they were completely duped? Perhaps as long as it will take for those Repukes who voted for the Chimpy/Deadeye ticket to do likewise. Lie-berman ran in 2006 pretending to still be a Dem, while being financed by the moneyed reich wing sugar daddies. Lie-berman is one of the most dangerous of the fascist rite, which should be obvious to all but the 19% kool-aid drinking crowd who still worship Deadeye. Ned Lamont looks better with each passing day.

  71. Ray II Says:

It was very interesting to hear Colin Powell this morning on MTP make the comments concerning the level of Al-Qaeda influence in Iraq…he said it was a small %. I don’t see why Lieberman just doesn’t go ahead a switch to the Republican party and be done with it! He is stirring the pot in preparation for the ‘end run’ strategy that Cheney is reportedly working to put in place. The pundits are all saying, that with Peter Pace going down it’s been a continuation of the Neocons falling by the wayside, but I feel that as long as Cheney (the defacto Commander in Chief) is within the administration there will be a strong and concerted effort to continue the destruction of our constitution and America as we know it.

What about the thousands of oil workers that are currently on strike in Iraq? The good news for them is that they are not going to sit down and allow the government to hand over their industry to the Americans. That is the conflict going on right now that the press isnt’ talking about. It’s very unclear we’re going to be able to ram-rod this bill through the Iraqi government.

Iraqi unions fight to keep oil out of corporate hands

The Bush administration calls the Iraq occupation an exercise in democracy building. Yet from the beginning, many of the Iraqis who want democracy most are treated as its enemies - Iraq’s unions.

The Bush administration won’t leave Iraq in part because that economic agenda is still insecure. Under Washington’s guidance, the Iraqi government wrote a new oil law in secret. The Iraq study commission, headed by oilman James Baker, called it the key to ending the occupation.

Like all Iraqi unionists, Juma’a says the occupation should end without demanding Iraq’s oil as a price. “The U.S.A. claimed that it came here as a liberator, not to control our resources,” he reminded Congress.

To win Iraqis’ respect, therefore, congressional opponents of the war must disavow the oil law. Whatever government holds power in Baghdad at the occupation’s end will need control of the oil wealth to rebuild their devastated country.

  134. Moderation Says:

The reason the realities of war and imperialism never “click” with those on the “right” is because they lack empathy. They are utterly lacking in the ability to put themselves in other people’s shoes. I mean, can you IMAGINE what it would be like if we were being treated as we currently treat Iraq and much of the rest of the world?!?

If we were not a nuclear power, and Cuba was a Chinese-backed nuclear power in our backyard, we’d be pissed. Because that’s what Israel is to the Middle East…a permanent Cuban Missile Crisis.

If Panamanians had committed a terrorist act against China, blowing up the Forbidden City for example, and the world had helped to locate and root out the Panamanian terrorists, we might very well have watched on, letting the UN and a coalition of countries to do so. If they stopped short of capturing the terrorist leader, and left it to street gangs in Panama, the world would stand stunned and wonder, “Why?”

If China then proceeded to invade MEXICO on falsified intelligence, or cherry-picked intelligence, bombing their infrastructure into oblivion with “shock and awe”, killing hundreds of thousands of Mexicans, and sticking around for an occupation for 5+ years, we’d be furious, screaming to the UN and all who’d listen about Chinese imperialism. Americans by the drove would cross the border, armed, and fight against the Chinese army, or at least help arm Mexican insurgents.

Oh, by the way, even though there are millions of qualified Mexicans to do the work of rebuilding the infrastructure, controlling the oil reserves and fields that Mexico has, etc, Chinese corporations and their allies have gotten every single contract. No Mexicans work on these projects, when they do they make slave wages, while the Chinese that do less work around them, and screw up far, far more, make $100,000+ per year. Also, the Chinese are working on a “deal” that hands most of Mexico’s oil profits to Chinese corporations, leaving only 10-20% of the money from that oil in the hand of Mexicans. The Chinese are also setting up scores of permanent, huge military bases throughout Mexico.

Not being a nuclear power, America would very likely push their nuclear research program into full gear, to put into place the only deterrent they could muster against a fully-armed nuclear power like China, even if it meant they could potentially get into trouble with the rest of the world.

If this then allowed Chinese politicians and pundits to try for a push to invade the United States, what would we do? If China insisted that they must leave military force, including the use of nuclear weapons, to preemptively deal with America’s dangerous research into nuclear weaponry, what would we do? How would America react? How SHOULD America act in such a situation? How should any country?

Imagine that Brazil, who backs far more of the insurgents in Mexico than America does, is best friends with China, and, like Cuba, has no real repercussions for their actions. Also, most of the “Panamanian” terrorists involved in the Forbidden City Bombing were actually Brazilian citizens, not Panamanian, a fact that the Chinese MSM never reports.

Now, take it a step further. Imaging that decades ago, America had finally tried its hand at democracy and elected a democratic government for the first time in it’s history, finally wresting itself of the theocratic control the the Roman Catholic Church had over it for most of it’s history. Now, imagine if you will that China had, those many decades ago, marched in, destroyed our fledgling democratic government, and gave the Vatican its political control over the country back, ensuring a powerful level of theocratic control that much of the populace specifically voted to eliminate.

Now, imagine that Cuba has, for decades, been looting, pillaging, raping and otherwise committing massive amounts of atrocities upon the peoples of the various Caribbean islands. China has, for decades, backed Cuba up, regardless of how many atrocities and international laws they break, being the top offender of ignoring UN Resolutions, yet continue to face no backlash, thanks to the backing China (and others) give at all times. Anyone who has taken action against Cuba, even in self-defense, has had to deal with the full weight of Chinese economic sanctions and the threat of Chinese military force.

THAT IS THE WORLD THE MIDDLE EAST HAS LIVED WITH FOR A LONG, LONG TIME. THAT IS WHAT THEY MUST DEAL WITH EVERY DAY OF THEIR LIVES.

Would we put up with it? Hell, no! Why should the Iraqis, the Iranians, and countless others.

Empathy. The ability to feel what others feel, to place yourself, mentally, in the same situation as others, so as to understand their perspective. Empathy is a commodity that so very many people on the “right” lack.

Lack of empathy explains their backwards thinking on social programs and helping those less fortunate.

Lack of empathy explains their so-called patriotism, which is really nationalism, and is not at all healthy.

Lack of empathy, a common trait among sociopaths, and among so-called conservatives, and so-called Christians. These people act neither Christian, nor conservative. They are authoritarian con-artists, and they want your money, my money, you land, my land, they want everything, and they don’t want to share it with anyone.

They are scary individuals, and are part of a political and social movement that is more like a disease, and needs to be treated.

It all boils down to a lack of empathy.

  140. Justin Vicory Says:

    Quick related Note:

I’m extremely thankful that Lieberman has been rightly admonished by some of his most diehard supporters.

As Lieberman likes to say when it happens to benefit himself of course, his record in the Congress and at home does include a number of leftward leaning proclivities. However, we can take solace in just how fundamentally important it would become for America for Ned Lamont to be the one candidate who forced Lieberman to expose himself, to force him to take a position on the War in Iraq.

For I’m certain that if Lieberman were to have perhaps done the most reasonable thing–remain quiet on the Iraq War debate (or at least not as polemic)–I truly believe that he would have naturally become a close ally to whoever it is that might consider having him as a running mate just as he was in 2000 with Al Gore.

    But for Who??

The truly mad thing about all of this is not whether or not he would adorn the VP Democratic ticket. No, rather than this, it’s been my suspicion that he would have found himself as John McCain’s running mate.

Of course while it is natural to assume that this would immediately fire up the Democratic base there’s also the notion that American voters–perhaps within a political climate of polarization and war time polemics, might actually skew towards the majority of moderates.

I know it’s relatively ahistorical to say that such a tandem would ever work, but there is something to say about McCain and Lieberman’s very close relationship. There’s something to say about the appearance of bipartisanship, at least when viewed in the current context regarding all the other presidential candidates.

And so, it’s fortunate that Karl Rove and the Bush administration—Dick Cheney in particular, and a growing chorus of right-wing pundits are endorsing him.

If Lamont and a few others had not run on one particular issue that really ended up providing the American public with Lieberman’s true political destiny and calling this, I’m extremely certain that our country could very well put a man in the White House who framed himself as the spokesman of liberal politics all the while doing everything he possibly can to further the current status quo as it relates to the single most important issue of our generation and times: the War in Iraq.

You’re not allowed to simply choose people because they are born into a high-income family or share views different from yours (ex., right-wing). Contrary to your beliefs, that’s not how the draft works. The all-volunteer force works and not everybody can go into combat.

Of note, I tried to enlist in the military (the Navy, specifically), but was physically unqualified to do so because of a hearing impairment. The military does have very strict physical requirements. I may even try again and go for a waiver (in that case, I’ve decided to try the Army or Marines).

The “saber rattling” (continued today by Senator Lieberman) on Iran MUST explain the choice of a Navy man to replace Peter Pace for the top Military post. The next “war” will be fought from the waters:

Well, you may not be psychologically-fit for military service, but you offer nice conspiracy theories. As well, even if I did fully support this administration, it doesn’t diminish my patriotism or worth as an American.

Name calling like yours only gives the anti-war movement a bad name. As recently documented by NBC, they’re tapping in to post fake anti-war websites in an attempt to weaken the morale and fighting will of our troops.

If Lie-berman were to be fair (an impossible stretch, to be sure), if the U.S. is obligated to attack Iran for supplying freedom fighters in Iraq, then Saudi A
